  • This is another video in my series “Walks in Hampshire” accompanied by my Whippet (Logan). In this episode I undertake a 2.5 mile circular route from Shawford Down (just North of Eastleigh in Hampshire).
After parking my car at the car park (Grid Ref SU467248) just off Otterbourne Road (a B road that runs parallel with the M3 motorway) on the side of Shawford Down, I firstly explore a WW1 wooden cross memorial before heading across the Down to the main War Memorial, from which I enjoy some stunning views over the Twyford valley.
I then head down in to Shawford, passing by a “famous” railway bridge, and along Bridge Lane (that follows the railway line North). After checking out the site that once was Compton Place, I join the River Itchen (at Compton Lock). My route takes me back South along the course of the river where I enjoy the sights of some wonderful houses & gardens on the other side of the bank.
The weather was amazing (due to the forecast heat, we completed our walk by 9am) and this really was a pretty walk to experience.

Another lovely walk. The Itchen looked stunning. Unlike Logan I'm not sure I could have resisted a quick paddle!

The thing with Logan is that he prefers to "wade in" to about chest height and he wasn't too sure about "jumping in" off the bottom step of that dog dip!

It’s a lovely walk along side the Itchen and what a beautiful day you chose for it. I’m ahead of you on this one, having walked all the way from Eastleigh up to Winchester along the river and the Itchen Navigation. I did the walk over several different days, but at least you can follow the river most of the time, unlike the Test, which is mostly private for fishing. On that particular section, I caught the train at Shawford back to Winchester.

The Itchen really was looking quite enchanting that day. Some of the reflections of the trees in the water were magical.

Thanks Ian. Some of these "Hampshire Chalk Stream / Rivers" are so crystal clear - quite breathtaking.

I think you should rename your vlog, When I Win The Lottery. I don’t suppose the owners of those houses at Shawford need worry about menial jobs like cutting the lawn! When I was a callow, long-haired art student, I used to travel up to Winchester from Southampton on the train and would go through Shawford. That was long before the internet and your video walks.

It is a lovely section of the river around there for sure.
