  • Relay time current curve selection with shortcut calculation.
In this video, you will be able to learn about relay current vs time curves.
You will be able to identify the basic difference between the curves interpret the curve behavior and take the decision accurately.
A sample example has been solved for ease of understanding.
After knowing this you will be able to do relay settings & their coordination with all other relays present in a system.
You will be able to calculate breaker-tripping time.
It is very critical as coordinated tripping will help to find fault easily & sectionalization.
You can try it for yourself too and mention it in the comment box.
You can visit my channel " Electrical Designing" for more other videos on the Basics of electrical designing & other very important and relevant topics which are very useful in knowledge enhancement.

Hi great video. I have some confusion regarding these tripping curves.
We know that to determine tripping time, you either use the curve or calculate the time using formula (of that specific curve). For e.g. we have a relay which is standard (normal) inverse or SI, like the GEC CDG31. It has also has a scale/chart given in its nameplate provided by the manufacturer to determine tripping time. But, when i use the formulae [ t=TMS * (0.140/(Ir^0.02)-1)] to determine time, using same current multiplier settings and time multiplier settings, and using same SI standard curve constants (k=0.140 & alpha=0.02), the calculated value does not matches the scale. Why is this? Am i missing something here? Need your help.

Dear the three curver mentioned has only difference of slope & firmula...it depends u want fast instant tripping or u want to wait for some time then trip....accordingly u have to calculate.

Dear... There is no thumb rule to select curve, you have to put value & get the tripping time & co relate with your higher side relay... It should be in sync.
