Sony Sound bar Review (HT-ST5000)

  • We've written before about the importance of having a sound bar with today's flat screen TVs. There's a new type of sound bar you'll see on the market, where it's more than just an external speaker.
I'm erin for Best Buy Canada's blog and Sony is now making a sound bar which it calls a Home Theatre Bar, and that's because more than just a speaker, this device also acts as a central component, like a stereo receiver to control and connect all your TV peripherals.
The Sony HT-ST5000 is a large and heavy 7.1.2 channel sound bar that comes with a large and heavy subwoofer. This kit is a higher end audio solution meant to provide top quality sound, and it feels well made and durable. Inside, a woofer and tweeter work together inside the sound bar and the separate subwoofer with a big downwards-firing passive radiator and forward-forward facing driver.
The soundbar also has a unique feature in that it's Dolby Atmos enabled, meaning you'll get more of a 3D soundscape. More on that in a second.
I have to admit that I struggled with the set up of this device, but I think that's probably because I didn't fully understand what this sound bar can do. Here's what I mean...
Because this soundbar is a Home Theatre Bar, all the components you'll want audio from will need to be routed through the HT-ST5000.
With my old Sony sound bar up there, it's just connected to the TV.. so the HT-ST5000 almost acts as a reciever.
I should also note the subwoofer basically sets up itself. Once you connect the kit to Wi-Fi, the subwoofer will connect to the sound bar wirelessly and the glowing green light on the front of the sub will prove it's raring to go.
Using an HDMI cable to connect allows you to access an on-screen menu that lets you change settings easily.
There's a couple key features on the HT-ST5000. One of those is dolby atmos.
Dolby Atmos was developed to give movie sound a more three-dimensional effect. Traditional 5.1- and 7.1-channel surround setups use speakers placed all around your
room. Atmos in essence simulates that effect.
Upward firing drivers in the top of the soundbar help to create a more 3D soudscape.
The sony HT-ST5000 also has Google Chromecast built in. This lets you cast music, podcasts or other audio right to your sound bar.
the sound bar also has voice mode and night mode.
Voice mode: This option lets you adjust the sound of voices to have them cut through the background noise even more so you don't need to crank up the overall volume just to hear the talking if it's low.
To access it, click the Voice button on the remote. You can turn it off or adjust it to level one or level two. You'll see this setting change on the front of the sound bar's digital display, not on the TV menu.
Night mode: Night mode tones down particularly loud noises like explosions, gunshots etc. for nighttime viewing so you'll be less likely to wake up the kids during John Wick 2. Night mode is toggled on and off with a button on the remote also; it's either on or off, as shown on that same digital display.
Overall the sound is pretty great on the sony HT-ST5000. I should point out this is not an inexpensive sound bar (you can check Best buy's website for current or sale pricing) so it's made for a dedicated home theatre set up. This is not the sound bar to pick if you just want to boost the audio on your dinky extra tv, like I have in my temperary set up here. You want to be able to fully appreciate it.
I used the soundbar for a variety of TV shows, movies and music.
Watching Game of Thrones this season has been a treat. The thundering hooves of the Dothraki army as it unleashes a surprise attack was really cool. I could feel them coming before I could see or hear them, just like the unnamed character they were advancing upon (no spoilers here!).
Ray Donovon has a lot less action this season but the dialogue was very clear and easy to listen to. Even Ray's somewhat mumbly Stallone-esque delivery was improved on the Sony HT-ST5000.
John Wick 2 was a seismic thrill ride. Whether it was a torrent of bullets, a raucous car chase, or a wicked fight scene, it felt like we were right in the room with our brooding hero and his gymnastic handgun techniques.
The sound bar delivers great sound and excellent quality overall. You can read more on the HTST5000 on Blog.BestBuy.ca

I own one. I like it. We needed something beefy for our home theatre room and even with the 1000 dollars in sound dampening acoustic foam this unit still does very well. Happy with my purchase and every neighbor I have has joined our movie club night. Two thumbs up.
Only thing is we keep the subwoofer on 3 of 12. This unit has serious bass. I can't imagine anyone using it on max bass not sure why so much went into the sub. Seems like over kill to me. 3 of 12 is plenty. Lol

You don’t have to route everything through soundbar (you can, but...) just connect everything to the TV and use ARC return Channel to run soundbar. Today’s TVs have 5-6 hdmi inputs, and that’s the reason.

She probably has a cheapo tv I'm surprised working with best buy she wouldn't research that... I'm not hating but you'd think she would have more information.

Why are you saying that everything must go through the sound bar? I hooked up my soundbar directly to the HDMI ARC of my TV and to the HDMI ARC behind my soundbar. I have my 4k player hooked up to HDMI 3 behind my TV. When I want to watch my 4K movies I simply switch the input on my TV to HDMI 3 and it plays through my soundbar perfectly.

For those of you saying you can hook your sources up to your TV and it still works. Yes, but the quality isnt where it should be. Look up eARC
If your TV is HDMI eARC enabled, but your AV amp or soundbar is only compatible with HDMI ARC, it’s likely you’ll get a sound - but the bandwidth restrictions of ARC will mean you won’t be able to experience the high bitrate audio that eARC can provide. So no, it's not backwards-compatible.
Some AV receivers and soundbars that don’t have HDMI 2.1 chipsets can be upgraded to support eARC, but it varies between manufacturers and models. It depends if they are using compatible hardware that can accept the necessary firmware update.
In short, the quality of the audio is only as good as the weakest part of the chain. So if your TV isn't supporting eARC, which only a few on the market are and they are high end, your weakest part of the chain is your TV.

This was a GREAT review of the HT-ST5000. DROP's (Formerly MASSDROP) emailed me regarding a sale on the product. And as much as I would love to buy one, I still can't bear to part with my Sony HT-CT150. I've had that Bar/Sub for almost a decade. It still sounds AMAZING! (Though honestly, the volume could be a bit more heightened). And it has multiple connections (which many current Sound/Subs have forgone). If this latest SONY price point decreases further below $1000, they it looks like a steal!

I loved your video, I would like your help to know which model to choose, since only one of these two will be my purchase (Sony ST5000 or Samsung Q950T) specifically those models, no others, I can only buy one of those two, I found your review very complete, so that's why I come to you, I look forward to your response my friend:)

Erin Lawrence i willing to bet that your connection probs are coming from the lg TV you are using, in addition it looks like you've got low res cables & you really wanna use HD cables. a good rule of thumb is that your entire system will only ever be as good as the cheapest component or accessory. go all Sony all the time for home entertainment & you'll never be disappointed. finally use only gold plated HDMI wiring & scrap the coaxial cables & wireless setups wherever possible hon. hope that helps you out. p.s. lg is just about the worst electronics company out there, that's why they sell their shit for such a cheap price 6months after releasing it, I've never once had a positive experience with any product they make. save the hassle, bite the bullet & just get a better product hon & Sony is a great place to start plus bravia sync is an awesome feature for all Sony products.

    • @instuller
      @instuller 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I wonder if its a cable length issue.. I used a handful of separate video processors in my prior sxrd rear projection setup, and I remember one instruction manual said to use 6 ft cables between each device….it all worked…That’s hard to implement stuffed behind a flatscreen and one soundbar, if in fact 0.5 and 1ft cables are the cause.

How much would you rate this dolby atmos soundbar? And how how is the Dolby Atmos 3D sound effect?

    • @ErinLawrenceTV
      @ErinLawrenceTV  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It's pretty good, but it's quite expensive. The Atmos 3D effect is pretty cool. I'd love to try it in a more permanent set up, as I think my temp location lost a little bit of the effectiveness.
