Im use to teaching people how to fly and fight in the mustang so just use to talking and fighting. I don’t do anything to aggressive either as you can’t really afford to be aggressive in a ww2 fight as that leads to mistakes and an opponent can punish mistakes much harder in a ww2 setting then a modern day setting. No afterburner to help pull you away.
You can tell just how skilled Hasina is by his delicate use of the flaps in the Mustang. Just 5 to 10 degrees of flaps makes a considerable difference in dogfights at slow and medium speeds.
Chuck Yeager always said the 190 was the only axis fighter in the same league as the Mustang. But just barely. It could win but you really had to know the outer limits of the 190.
One German Ace said that the 109 could out turn the Mustang, but only if you held on, the Mustang was better in the initial phase of the turn, that spooked less experienced 109 pilots that tried to then dive away. If you stayed in a tight turn fight the 109 held an advantage. Which makes sense, it was lighter and the late 109 types (G-10, G-14 and K-4) were powerful fighters (with 1,800hp engines with methanol/water MWD-50 boost systems) and with better aerodynamics than the earlier 109’s like the G-6.

@@DowJonesDave Agreed. It was designed for attacking bomber formations, not as a fighter interceptor. Altitude, attack, and always maintain airspeed. Fighter kills are incidental and not intentional. At these altitudes with the wing loading you are dead. (Well demonstrated)
The engine change was only advantageous at high altitudes. At low level the Allison Mustang remained faster throughout its career. There's a reason the RAF continued to use their Allison Mustangs for low level work right up to the end of the war

One of the reasons I like watching prop airplane simulations? Is because I can feel the G-force. It reminds me of when we lived in Mojave. Going out in our personal airplanes and go dog fighting. The grey paint on our plane made it harder to see below the horizon.
The Dora should be outclimbing and out rolling the P-51. The Mustang will out turn the Dora all day long. The 190 had the fastest roll rate of any plane in WW2. Second was the F-4U Corsair.
Dora is probably harder to fly than the P-51, but it is actually a competent fighter. It turns surprisingly well when at high speeds, i've managed to keep up with spits in turning fights at high speeds and alts. At low speeds and altitudes you are basically dead, although you could try and out climb the P-51. Maintaining high speeds is essential. Combine that with very easy wing stalls at any speed and what you get is the masochist machine AKA Dora. To properly use the Dora you have to know its limits, pass them and you flip out into a stall or lose too much energy or you don't fly close enough to the limit and get a P-51 on your tail. The Dora has a small margin in which you have to fly to win a duel. In any case flying against a plane with lower wing loading is almost always a challenge as they will likely have a better low speed turn rate to fall back on. Would be interesting to see a rematch at higher altitudes, especially since both of these fighters were designed for it.
As a Dora enthusiast myself I'm sorry to say the Mustang's advantages only increase as you go up in altitude. The Dora isn't as much a "high altitude fighter" as a "high altitude capable" fighter. It's a massive improvement in high altitude performance over the Anton, but it's still not exactly great at high altitudes compared to a Mustang or even a Spitfire.
@Grim Reapers - Just a thought, a post WW2 aerial combat demonstration of Soviet and Allied aircraft. And correct me if I’m wrong, but the Dora’s strength is high altitude where it was designed to fight the bombers but the lower altitude fight favors the Mustang.
The Mustang's strength was also high altitude work thanks to its 2 stage supercharged Packard Merlin, in late 1943 and early/mid 1944 when the war in the air was was decided over europe the main Luftwaffe fighters were the 109G and FW190A which both lacked high altitude performance compared to the P51 (which has a 2 stage supercharger) and the P47 (which had a tubo-supercharger). Therefore at over 20,000ft where the bombers were - the American fighters were significantly faster than the German ones in that cruicial period. By the time the FW190D came into service in mid 1944 the war for the air was basically over.

From a common pleb that sticks to War Thunder, it seems to me that the FW190 power advantage was not utilized. Lure the P51 into an aggressive unsustainable climb and then pounce down on it. Seems to me that after the initial merge it turned into turnfighting. But what do I know, I have never played DCS.
Warthunder has almost like a fly by wire system on its aircraft there is an ai that does half the flying for you. You could never stall a wing in War thunder because the AI doesn’t let you. It doesn’t let you push the capabilities of what an aircraft is capable of, and you don’t get punished for mistakes as hard. I catch quite alot of people off guard who try to use strats that I have seen being used in war thunder from when I used to play that in a full simulator environment. 100% recommend you give dcs a go night and day difference if you’re starting to find War thunder as maybe to easy or you want to talk a step up when it comes to flight sims

@@_AnanasIEgenJuice_ cap has some videos where he plays with someone using only mouse and keyboard. Have a quick search and you might be able to find them. But you can still get some cheep equipment also if your in the GR discord ask around and I’m sure people will be able to show off what ghetto stuff they use for their sim setup. IL2 also has mouse and keyboard integration and uses similar controls to like warthunder simulator battles from what I’ve seen
Have you thought of doing a reenactment of 1 of the battle's the Red tails flew. Include the history of the Red tails. I think they deserve the respect. Better than what this country gave them when they got back.
I need to show this to the guys who run the Historic Flight Museum near where I live. They have a P-51D and a Spitfire (don't remember which variant) that they fly around sometimes. I remember them comparing the Mustang's wing and flight envelope to the FW-190 in one of their presentations. They actually did a really cool study on the characteristics of the Mustang wing which I don't think anyone else has done before. They compared different wind tunnel test data from like five different countries taken during the war, even from Germany and Russia I think.
It’s kinda hard to outrun an opponent when you have the SAME top speed, and the Mustang is lighter, so it should accelerate quicker. Plus the lower wing load. No surprise the Mustang comes out on top, just like in WWII. Imagine that.
Dora does gain some advantages the higher you go but as soon as the super charge kicks in things become even again. One advantage the Dora has is it’s climb rate. For a Dora to win the fight he would have to play the patience game And make 0 mistakes. Rather then turn or do anything at the merge he would just have to push through and start a shallow climb. Then when he had significant altitude over the mustang turn back in and begin booming and zooming not committing to any dogfight. But that would make for a long video. We have this knowledge however and pilots of the time probably didn’t so people flying the Dora in this video would be doing what any German pilot would have done back then and that’s fight. Other option would have been to run away and ignore the p51 complete but that’s also not very entertaining haha.
@@charlesbukowski9836 I never said anything about the Dora should get into a dog fight if you read my comment I said that German pilots back then might have gotten into dogfights because everything back then was experimental still when it came to dogfights. Now we have the knowledge of what aircraft have the best turning which aircraft have the best climb rate which were the fastest. German pilots towards the end of the war were also not very experienced as most of the experienced pilots had been killed. The people flying the Dora in the vid are good pilots but this want necessarily where their expertise lie.
Perfect timing! I am thinking about getting my first warbird! Suggestions? Thoughts are the P-47 might be too complex, ME 109 isn't complicated enough, so that leaves P-51 and Spitfire. What do you all think?
To be honest your rarely pressing anything cockpit wise once your in the air. I wouldn’t say any of the ww2 are too complex some just require a little more management in the air then others engine wise but it’s more about how each aircraft flies. Bf109 and Spit are definitely more forgiving in the way you fly them. Aircraft don’t punish you too hard if you make a mistake Aircraft like the P51 will hard punish you if you push the envelope off what the aircraft is capable of. I normally recommend the Spit or 109 as a good starting warbirds in DCS. Luckily there is a free TF51 in the sim for you to try out and gives an okay idea of what the P51 is like

@@mfreed40k yeah It’s definitely a good pick only thing i dislike about the k4 is the 30mm in the nose. It’s hard to aim when it comes to sitting down fighters especially at high angle off shots which is what you’re doing alot of the time in the 109. Do a quick look into each aircraft’s strengths and weakness also so you know what your getting into when it comes to fighting other aircraft

When we did the whole agree to no head on shooting we mean that any head to head on pass we wouldn’t shoot and only go for a proper guns kill from the 6 o clock. Head on gunfights are too 50/50 and could impact the results I thought. Plus’s I never shoot in the head on and normally try to capitalise of those that get to aggressive and go for it have a pretty decent strat for a quick reversal for those that try head on shots
The P51 has reactive gun sight, meaning when it is pointed at the enemy, it most likely will hit the enemy....yet I kept seeing Cap pull the sight above the enemy and shoot and complain about not doing damage.....yet when he put it on him hits were made.....watching the last dogfight was making me want to pull my hair out!!! SHOOT, don't wait until the site it WAY past it......SHOOT!!!! IF you are worried it isn't quite accurate, then start shooting at the tail and end when you have pulled past the nose...or vice versa....
The MK2 gyro gunsight isn’t 100% accurate even my kill in the last 2v2 I had to make adjustments to my own person knowledge you need to have both the wingspan and distance perfectly set in and be pulling constant same g loading for it to be accurate. I have both true gyro and static sight active for this exact reason so I can use both the gyro and my own knowledge when it comes to aiming the .50 to try and make good shots
@@hasina1461 Yes, BUT he was hitting when he put the dot of the site at the nose most times from what I saw, and yet he pretty consistently pulled another couple inches in front and then MISSED, and complained about it. Part of what you see in interviews of those who actually flew the P51 was they would "rake through" or start at front or back and then move on through the plane with the site. IF you know your site is a bit off, this covers the bases by for instance, starting way to far out front, firing a burst and letting the enemy move closer to the site so your bullets hit from front to back. I am talking a 2 maybe 3 second burst which if you also listen to the shots being taken are much longer in duration than almost any burst by Cap. The site was a vast improvement to "eyeballing it" but wasn't perfect, true, but it did work extremely well for someone who knew it well and set it up correctly.
@@mcsupersport yeah defiantly when try to take shots I normally over lead my target and relax the back pressure a little so that it flies through a burst of rounds. The burst doing down from engine to tail it’s how I normally get all the pilot snipes I do when flying in IL2 or dcs
This video just gave me what I think is a great idea. SCIENCE! Test drunk pilots vs sober pilots! 😆 Could be a great short series. Have one half of pilots that day get buzzed/drunk before the match and the other half stay sober. Have them fly against each other and tally results. Then do it again another day with it reversed, the sober pilots now drunk and drunk pilots now sober. Tally results. Then maybe as a final...everyone drunk! I'd love to watch you guys in a big drunken furball of a dogfight. This would absolutely have to be done with WW2 or 1950's fighters for max sexiness and hilarity. Please do!

Sadly il2 only has the ju87 and pe2 dive bombers were Pretty obsolete except for in the pacific where you could only accurately bomb ships through dive bombing. Even the ju87 got switch to the anti tank role with the ju87G series. Would need both jap and USN planes for this and even then I think the SBD Dauntless would take the prize 🏆

You should model a ASM-135 ASAT. Also is it possible to model Moab correctly with laser guidance? The MIM-14 NIKE HERCULES would be fun to see as well.
ASM-135: negative, GR A-A missiles can;t break 100,000ft :( MOAD: yes BUT someone else is already making it so leave it to them. MIM-14: yes we can do that, we can even do a nuke warhead.
My favorite WWII fighters on Aces Over Europe! Loved that game. Is there an gaming idiot mode on DCS? MS Flight Simulator? I'm 70 now and have not kept up with it. Just loved to do missions on Aces but it's just not 21st Century graphics. Thanks in advance, pilots!
When y'all do these dogfights maybe in the future have a return to base feature for the winner so fuel management could come into play more. Also perhaps a small mission then dogfight and rtb for the same effect.

I am new to this subscribing and all that Grim reapers you’re all awesome and entertaining What is the flight sim you use for all this stuff I used to fly aces high but alas I am 60 now and not as good as I once was
This simulator is called DCS (Digital Combat Simulator) and it can get fairly expensive as you need to purchase each individual aircraft that you wish to fly (They usually cost around $50.00 to $60.00 USD each). My advice is to wait for sales! Good news is there are plenty of resources on TH-cam and online forums (and Discord communities like GR) if you want to learn! DCS includes two free aircraft for you to get a feel for how the flight models work, and the TF-51 is very fun to fly (Basically a trainer version of the P-51). The game itself is free to play, so I suggest at least giving it a try! Nothing like it.
P.S. naval battles are a work of art, love seeing the results of the videos you guys produce but also the information as well as the acknowledgement of people behind the scenes.
Germans planes arnt my strong point but I can still do decent in them i had to redo my keybinds and just didn’t have time before the mission as I had other problems to sort out also with my pc haha I do like the German airframes but I much prefer the earlier models like the F4 and G6 I one flying those in il2 against yaks and La5s in the next dcs ww2 vid I will try and get my German stuff setup

You mention compression a bunch when flying war birds, I don't know what that is (and google is no use whatsoever), any chance you could spell it out a bit next time you're flying these?
It’s basically where your going so fast the speed at which air is travelling over your control surfaces means it becomes much harder to move them. Meaning the aircraft doesn’t respond as much to control input. Try pulling out of a dive at different airspeeds and you will see the difference
that p51 pilot isnt taking advantage of the rate advatage the mustang has over the door. so many opportunities where if he snapped the roll at a proper speed he would have been on the 6

The mustang went from am ok terd to the jewel of the Air Core when they put the Merlin engine in her. Just made it the best in its classby far.

Like another viewer posted, the Dora was out of its element at low altitude. You should do a rematch with a 20000 foot hard deck.
Dora is way out of its element above 5000m. D-12 and D-13 were made for high alt. Ta-152C and H were good at high alt. D9 was horrible at high alt.
I absolutely love these sims. Great job. Love having two pilots fighting it out. Respect.

Long range bomber escort mission sounds great to me
I need to show this to the guys who run the Historic Flight Museum near where I live. They have a P-51D and a Spitfire (don't remember which variant) that they fly around sometimes. I remember them comparing the Mustang's wing and flight envelope to the FW-190 in one of their presentations. They actually did a really cool study on the characteristics of the Mustang wing which I don't think anyone else has done before. They compared different wind tunnel test data from like five different countries taken during the war, even from Germany and Russia I think.

It’s kinda hard to outrun an opponent when you have the SAME top speed, and the Mustang is lighter, so it should accelerate quicker. Plus the lower wing load. No surprise the Mustang comes out on top, just like in WWII. Imagine that.
Dora does gain some advantages the higher you go but as soon as the super charge kicks in things become even again. One advantage the Dora has is it’s climb rate. For a Dora to win the fight he would have to play the patience game And make 0 mistakes. Rather then turn or do anything at the merge he would just have to push through and start a shallow climb. Then when he had significant altitude over the mustang turn back in and begin booming and zooming not committing to any dogfight. But that would make for a long video. We have this knowledge however and pilots of the time probably didn’t so people flying the Dora in this video would be doing what any German pilot would have done back then and that’s fight. Other option would have been to run away and ignore the p51 complete but that’s also not very entertaining haha.

@@charlesbukowski9836 I never said anything about the Dora should get into a dog fight if you read my comment I said that German pilots back then might have gotten into dogfights because everything back then was experimental still when it came to dogfights. Now we have the knowledge of what aircraft have the best turning which aircraft have the best climb rate which were the fastest. German pilots towards the end of the war were also not very experienced as most of the experienced pilots had been killed. The people flying the Dora in the vid are good pilots but this want necessarily where their expertise lie.
Perfect timing! I am thinking about getting my first warbird! Suggestions? Thoughts are the P-47 might be too complex, ME 109 isn't complicated enough, so that leaves P-51 and Spitfire. What do you all think?
To be honest your rarely pressing anything cockpit wise once your in the air. I wouldn’t say any of the ww2 are too complex some just require a little more management in the air then others engine wise but it’s more about how each aircraft flies. Bf109 and Spit are definitely more forgiving in the way you fly them. Aircraft don’t punish you too hard if you make a mistake Aircraft like the P51 will hard punish you if you push the envelope off what the aircraft is capable of. I normally recommend the Spit or 109 as a good starting warbirds in DCS. Luckily there is a free TF51 in the sim for you to try out and gives an okay idea of what the P51 is like
Get two when they go on sale.. The blues usually outnumber the reds if you're flying online

@@mfreed40k yeah It’s definitely a good pick only thing i dislike about the k4 is the 30mm in the nose. It’s hard to aim when it comes to sitting down fighters especially at high angle off shots which is what you’re doing alot of the time in the 109.
Do a quick look into each aircraft’s strengths and weakness also so you know what your getting into when it comes to fighting other aircraft

Typical you wouldn’t fire on the initial merge, because you need to identify the oncoming aircraft. After that, send it if they’re head on.
When we did the whole agree to no head on shooting we mean that any head to head on pass we wouldn’t shoot and only go for a proper guns kill from the 6 o clock. Head on gunfights are too 50/50 and could impact the results I thought.
Plus’s I never shoot in the head on and normally try to capitalise of those that get to aggressive and go for it have a pretty decent strat for a quick reversal for those that try head on shots

The P51 has reactive gun sight, meaning when it is pointed at the enemy, it most likely will hit the enemy....yet I kept seeing Cap pull the sight above the enemy and shoot and complain about not doing damage.....yet when he put it on him hits were made.....watching the last dogfight was making me want to pull my hair out!!! SHOOT, don't wait until the site it WAY past it......SHOOT!!!! IF you are worried it isn't quite accurate, then start shooting at the tail and end when you have pulled past the nose...or vice versa....
The MK2 gyro gunsight isn’t 100% accurate even my kill in the last 2v2 I had to make adjustments to my own person knowledge you need to have both the wingspan and distance perfectly set in and be pulling constant same g loading for it to be accurate. I have both true gyro and static sight active for this exact reason so I can use both the gyro and my own knowledge when it comes to aiming the .50 to try and make good shots
@@hasina1461 Yes, BUT he was hitting when he put the dot of the site at the nose most times from what I saw, and yet he pretty consistently pulled another couple inches in front and then MISSED, and complained about it. Part of what you see in interviews of those who actually flew the P51 was they would "rake through" or start at front or back and then move on through the plane with the site. IF you know your site is a bit off, this covers the bases by for instance, starting way to far out front, firing a burst and letting the enemy move closer to the site so your bullets hit from front to back. I am talking a 2 maybe 3 second burst which if you also listen to the shots being taken are much longer in duration than almost any burst by Cap. The site was a vast improvement to "eyeballing it" but wasn't perfect, true, but it did work extremely well for someone who knew it well and set it up correctly.
@@mcsupersport yeah defiantly when try to take shots I normally over lead my target and relax the back pressure a little so that it flies through a burst of rounds. The burst doing down from engine to tail it’s how I normally get all the pilot snipes I do when flying in IL2 or dcs

This video just gave me what I think is a great idea. SCIENCE! Test drunk pilots vs sober pilots! 😆 Could be a great short series. Have one half of pilots that day get buzzed/drunk before the match and the other half stay sober. Have them fly against each other and tally results. Then do it again another day with it reversed, the sober pilots now drunk and drunk pilots now sober. Tally results. Then maybe as a final...everyone drunk! I'd love to watch you guys in a big drunken furball of a dogfight. This would absolutely have to be done with WW2 or 1950's fighters for max sexiness and hilarity. Please do!

Sadly il2 only has the ju87 and pe2 dive bombers were Pretty obsolete except for in the pacific where you could only accurately bomb ships through dive bombing. Even the ju87 got switch to the anti tank role with the ju87G series. Would need both jap and USN planes for this and even then I think the SBD Dauntless would take the prize 🏆

When y'all do these dogfights maybe in the future have a return to base feature for the winner so fuel management could come into play more. Also perhaps a small mission then dogfight and rtb for the same effect.
Well the P51’s flew long range escort missions I don’t think fuel would be a problem for them

You are wrong. The BMW 801 was the engine of the FW 190 A and F models. The 190 D's featured the aformentioned V12 liquid cooled engine

This simulator is called DCS (Digital Combat Simulator) and it can get fairly expensive as you need to purchase each individual aircraft that you wish to fly (They usually cost around $50.00 to $60.00 USD each). My advice is to wait for sales! Good news is there are plenty of resources on TH-cam and online forums (and Discord communities like GR) if you want to learn!
DCS includes two free aircraft for you to get a feel for how the flight models work, and the TF-51 is very fun to fly (Basically a trainer version of the P-51). The game itself is free to play, so I suggest at least giving it a try! Nothing like it.

I do like the German airframes but I much prefer the earlier models like the F4 and G6 I one flying those in il2 against yaks and La5s in the next dcs ww2 vid I will try and get my German stuff setup

You mention compression a bunch when flying war birds, I don't know what that is (and google is no use whatsoever), any chance you could spell it out a bit next time you're flying these?
It’s basically where your going so fast the speed at which air is travelling over your control surfaces means it becomes much harder to move them. Meaning the aircraft doesn’t respond as much to control input. Try pulling out of a dive at different airspeeds and you will see the difference
D9 is a high altitude fighter.. and will not perform as well as you'd expect vs a P-51 which excels at low altitude.
