If you've ever mourned the loss of a loved one, or are a fan of the LOTR series, I think you will really enjoy this. It makes me think of my father who I lost two years ago.... I hope you enjoy.

My teenage daughter passed last month after fighting cancer since she was 11. Near the end, I couldn't hold her because it hurt her too much. I am sobbing while listening to this song. How I look forward to one day holding her in my arms again, watching her sleep peacefully. Oh, my baby! These are some of the most beautiful words in all of fantasy. I love the mental picture "the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a far green country under a swift sunrise."

    Lay down
    Your sweet and weary head
    The night is falling
You have come to journey's end
    Sleep now
And dream of the ones who came before
    They are calling
    From across the distant shore
    Why do you weep?
What are these tears upon your face?
    Soon you will see
All of your fears will pass away
    Safe in my arms
    You're only sleeping
    What can you see
    On the horizon?
Why do the white gulls call?
    Across the sea
    A pale moon rises
The ships have come to carry you home
    And all will turn
    To silver glass
    A light on the water
    All Souls pass
    Hope fades
    Into the world of night
    Through shadows falling
    Out of memory and time
    Don't say
We have come now to the end
    White shores are calling
You and I will meet again
And you'll be here in my arms
    Just sleeping
    And all will turn
    To silver glass
    A light on the water
    Grey ships pass
    Into the West

My cousin passed away about 6 years ago (he would have been 31 this year). Before he passed, he copied over the album of the songs from LotR: Return of the King onto a CD for my uncle, his father. A few months after he passed away my uncle pulled out a random CD and put it on shuffle.. It turned out that it was that CD and this was the song it began to play.

    • @kyletactfultheologian
      @kyletactfultheologian 10 ปีที่แล้ว +21

which makes absolutely no sense. In the Hobbit, the story of the Dwarves is intended as a metaphor for Israel in the Old Testament. Thorin is meant to resemble the expected King David, or warrior king, that would free the chosen people. However, the LOTR uses sort of two examples of a Messiah. Where Froddo appears to be playing the Christ who carried the sins of humanity, Aragorn appears to be playing the role of the warrior Jesus from Revelation. I could go on, but Tolkien was clearly representing scripture through both the Hobbit and LOTR.

I did not know that. Though that may be something to do with the fact I could never read Tolkien...amazingly written but the style isn't something I can read unfortunately. I respect the author a lot though. He created something immortal.

    • @harrietrichards4595
      @harrietrichards4595 11 ปีที่แล้ว

That was actually quite a common technique among fantasy authors around that time - the author of the Conan books had a similar approach. The idea of creating fantasy worlds that are completely separate from our own hadn't really caught on, so fantasy authors generally tied their world in with the real world in some way or another.

Harriet Richards It also boggles my mind how similar his works are to the Christian Bible. But, then again, he was Christian, and a close friend of C.S. Lewis. So it's not really surprising.

    • @harrietrichards4595

I believe this song is in the end credits of the last movie. I don't think Tolkien wrote the lyrics.
Tolkien's works have some similarities with the Bible, which obviously isn't surprising seeing as he was Catholic, but there's a strong pagan influence as well (primarily Germanic), and there's also a great deal of originality in them.

One of my grandmas passed away in January of 2008. We had lost my grandpa just a little over 4 years before. Even though my mind, and my heart revolve around music, I have no talent for it, vocal, or instrument, though I did play clarinet for 8 years. I wanted to speak at her funeral, to help honor her memory as one of the best people I've ever known in my life. So since I can't see worth a darned, I recited the lyrics to this song. Every time I hear, or think about it, I think of my grandma. This song is special to me.
I have never heard a version of it that wasn't Annie Lennox's original from the Return of the King soundtrack, until yours! Thank you for doing the song justice, and honoring it's meaning, and the healing it brings to us all! I see a lot of other people who have commented on this video have had similar stories, and I know we all thank you soooo much!!

As both a Tolkien fan and a Hollens fan, this song really hits home with me. The imagery of the white gulls sparking the homesickness in the elves that inexorably draws them to the grey havens to embark on the trip home to the realm of the undying lands, literally makes me weep. I love the arrangement and Peter's performance. I, of course, can't help but sing along, an octave lower, and every phrase of the lyrics stirs my soul.

For those who want to song along with him:
    Lay down
    Your sweet and weary head
    The night is falling
You have come to journey's end
    Sleep now
And dream of the ones who came before
    They are calling
    From across the distant shore
    Why do you weep?
What are these tears upon your face?
    Soon you will see
All of your fears will pass away
    Safe in my arms
    You're only sleeping
    What can you see
    On the horizon?
Why do the white gulls call?
    Across the sea
    A pale moon rises
The ships have come to carry you home
    And all will turn
    To silver glass
    A light on the water
    All Souls pass
    Hope fades
    Into the world of night
    Through shadows falling
    Out of memory and time
    Don't say
We have come now to the end
    White shores are calling
You and I will meet again
And you'll be here in my arms
    Just sleeping
    What can you see
    On the horizon?
Why do the white gulls call?
    Across the sea
    A pale moon rises
The ships have come to carry you home
    And all will turn
    To silver glass
    A light on the water
    Grey ships pass
    Into the West

I played this song as a tribute to my Grandmother last year when she passed away. I had not seen her or home for 4 years after joining the Marine Corps. I was making plans to see her when I got the news. I have broken bones, separated my shoulder, and puked blood in training and sports and never cried for any of those things....but playing this song took all of my strength not to burst into tears on my camera. I had hoped she was going to be able to be see my wife and I get married, but due to her health she said she would only be able to be there in spirit, and I can tell you that I know she was there with us. I love you Gram, and one day the ships will call me home and I will see you again.

I've had to sing emotional songs before: you really do just think about it as lyrics and focus on execution. Don't think about what they mean.

When I sing a sad song, I let my emotions come through my voice. Music needs emotion.

This song is my 2 year old little girls special song that calms her down instantly when upset and she has us play it and sing along to it every night at bedtime (usually at least twice....and has to be this version) a total god send of a song for us on long car journeys as when she gets fed up and cries all we need to do is find this on here and put it on for her and instantly she calms down and usually goes to sleep :) we love all your music but this is definitely a favourite in our house! Thank you so much for doing this song :)

Do not worry my greatest love, although my mind and body will be gone my soul will live with you forever. Clear the tears from your eyes maybe in a time far away from now our spirits will meet again. time is our loves only obsticle, but for now our journey has come to an end goodbye and I will always love you
