My teenage daughter passed last month after fighting cancer since she was 11. Near the end, I couldn't hold her because it hurt her too much. I am sobbing while listening to this song. How I look forward to one day holding her in my arms again, watching her sleep peacefully. Oh, my baby! These are some of the most beautiful words in all of fantasy. I love the mental picture "the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a far green country under a swift sunrise."
Hey Peter. I just lost my dad last month. This is my first time hearing you sing this song since he passed. It makes me feel like he's gone on a journey and that someday I may catch up with him again. Thanks for all you do.

My mom passed away after her long fight against cancer this last Sunday and this song is going to be sung at her funeral tomorrow. Thank you Peter, for such a beautiful rendition of this song.
My step grandma passed away from lukemia a few days ago and this song made me finally let my tears out and know shes in a better place. Thank you Peter Hollens

Hearing this gave me a very large step in that direction. Thank you so so so much. There is more than beauty in this piece.
My cousin passed away about 6 years ago (he would have been 31 this year). Before he passed, he copied over the album of the songs from LotR: Return of the King onto a CD for my uncle, his father. A few months after he passed away my uncle pulled out a random CD and put it on shuffle.. It turned out that it was that CD and this was the song it began to play.
In 2013 I lost my cousin in a car accident and this song got me through it. Here we are in 2022 and I still cry like a baby when I hear this. Peter, this song both helped me through my grief and helped me keep her memory alive. Thank you for this, please keep doing what you do. You have a gift from on high.
Lay down Your sweet and weary head The night is falling You have come to journey's end Sleep now And dream of the ones who came before They are calling From across the distant shore Why do you weep? What are these tears upon your face? Soon you will see All of your fears will pass away Safe in my arms You're only sleeping What can you see On the horizon? Why do the white gulls call? Across the sea A pale moon rises The ships have come to carry you home And all will turn To silver glass A light on the water All Souls pass Hope fades Into the world of night Through shadows falling Out of memory and time Don't say We have come now to the end White shores are calling You and I will meet again And you'll be here in my arms Just sleeping And all will turn To silver glass A light on the water Grey ships pass Into the West

As both a Tolkien fan and a Hollens fan, this song really hits home with me. The imagery of the white gulls sparking the homesickness in the elves that inexorably draws them to the grey havens to embark on the trip home to the realm of the undying lands, literally makes me weep. I love the arrangement and Peter's performance. I, of course, can't help but sing along, an octave lower, and every phrase of the lyrics stirs my soul.

I listen to this song (and sing it best as I can) to remember my Dad, who passed away April 22nd, 1997. Thanks for singing and recording it, and including the lyrics in closed caption. I won't see you too soon Dad (I hope), but I will see you again.
That's beautiful, thank you for sharing. I'm truly sorry for your loss. I too have lost a child. I don't know what it's been like for you. I'm not sure the pain ever completely goes away, but sometimes songs like these can help. I find most of my solace in trusting that I'll see her again just "past the horizon" when it is my time to sail that way as well.
My heart breaks for you. This song always melts me to tears as it invariably binds itself to my thinking again of my 15 year old son who was killed in 2011. May the Lord grant you comfort even as the grief ever abides.
I wasn't quite sure what song this was but it said LOTR so I hit play. Then when I heard the chorus.....my geek started showing!!! I remember working early at Wal-Mart one morning and that song started playing on Wal-Mart radio....and I said to one of my coworkers, "I know this song, but how? (And then it hit me) "OMG! That's from the LOTR! They play it on the end credits!!!!" I started jumping up and down, and my coworker just shook her head...lol So thankyou for reminding me of that little memory and keep up the good work! You have a wonderful voice!
This song has always touched my heart; the only song to make me cry each time I listen to it. Annie Lennox did an astounding job, but Peter you have built it up even more. Bless you Peter Hollens for sharing your amazing talent with the world!
I just lost my mom this last Wednesday and this song brings me and my family to tears, I love this song and this is a beautiful rendition. I appreciate all the work you do.
Just heard this on my playlist and decided to look it up on youtube and see what others thought of it and I found myself here, listening to this and being blown away to the brink of tears. You sir have earned yourself my respect and my subscription.
Peter, I cannot write down with words how great this is. Your cover inspired me to finally begin to write my book that has been in my mind for years. Thank you!
Something about this song really gets me. Don't know what it is, but this is one of those pieces of music that is truly special. In the afterlife, Peter, I hope you get to lead your own choir of a capella singers right along with the angels. Then we would not be afraid of dying. I know this sounds weird, but it's the truth.
"With that kind of heart, When that day comes you will be singing right along side him." -that was the quiet thought that occurred in my mind when reading the above. perhaps one day you'll see it proven true. hm? My the point being bring friends along for your journey, it will add to the poetry.
An absolutely terrific comment regarding Peter and this song. You're so spot on, I hope Jesus reads your comment; maybe put it in the form of a prayer. I would love to listen to Peter in heaven.
If only tunes were put to all the songs in Tolkien's books. Mr. Hollens is the perfect man to sing all of those songs. Mr. Hollens, you have an amazing voice! Keep on keeping on, and God bless!
Absolutely the BEST version of this song I have ever heard. Pete does this song like nobody can!!! His voice is so great; he's a particular favorite of mine. Kudos Pete. I never tire of this song because you made it your own.
Stunning, stunning, stunning. Epic and gorgeous production, visually, musically...a handsome man with an astounding voice sings 'Into The West'. Pure a cappella...there is none better.
Every year my marching band plays this at the banquet where we play the show for the last time... playing the trombone solo is one of the most surreal times of my life...
I've listened to this song just over a thousand times in the last year. It is still the single most beautiful song I've heard, and it gives me chills every time. Thank you for making it.
Dear Mr. Hollens, From the way you interact with fans, to the passion that is so evident in your work, you are inspiring, I have found myself being pulled out of a rut on more than one occasion thanks to your covers. Thank you so much, for making music as it should be, inspiring, enlightening, and full of heart. Thank you Sincerely, Joel Reyes
I am here in front of my computer watching and listening you sing. Again the color make you so alive thru the screen. My two little dogs are listening and sleeping.
This song is more than just the journey that souls take to the West. This song represents Tolkien and his beliefs, he made these books containing the religions of the world. I couldn't think of a better song to represent Mr. Tolkien. May he rest in peace. Thank you, Peter Hollens, for bringing this song to life in a way that undoubtedly would please Mr. Tolkien.
If so, it is ironic since Tolkien himself admitted that The Lord of the Rings was inspired and informed by his deep Catholic faith. Tolkien's genius was that he wrote it in such a way that it speaks to people of all faiths and none.
I just learned that my husband is being deployed to Afganistan for nine months, and I was drawn to listen to this song. I know it's not the same, and thank the heavens he's coming back, but the feeling of hopeful longing, of knowing I will see him again, makes me feel better, even while crying. So thank you Peter for your beautiful rendition of this song. It gives me some peace in my chaotic head.
Beautiful song, masterfully interpreted. So touching, and yes, it does bring comfort to those that mourn. I lost my sweetheart and Army veteran 19 years ago. He left me with the greatest gift that has helped me get through all these years--our six great kids. But this song touches on that yearning that still lasts all these years later. Thank you so much for sharing your talents. So comforting and I'm not even familiar with LOTR!
Its probably because this songs calls to anyone who had lost a loved one at some point in their lives! Its the most beautiful metaphor of deatht that I have ever heard. Even if you're not a fan of LOTR you can't help but be moved by those lyrics! :)
No words... just tears. I lost my precious son almost a year ago. Though I know I will see him again one day, your music brought me a much-needed release. Thank you.
I have been brought to tears by you, now for the third time. While music is insanely important to me, it takes real talent to move me to such emotions. You have done this many times before. Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring was the first book I ever read and understood. I was four. There are so many amazing memories tied to that series, along with The Hobbit. Thank you, Mr. Hollens. Thank you for making my already wonderful memories that much more amazing. Please don't stop making music like this. ♥
My God Peter this was absolutely beautiful. .. it brought tears of pure joy and happiness to my eyes and heart that flowed deep into the depths if my darkened soul... sparking a light that was blown out when my Mother pasted yrs ago. It has given me new hope in being/seeing her again. ..for I miss her so. I can not thank you enough for the way particular song lifted me and brought me out of my dark domain.
I'm home sick today so no singing. I am feeling really yucky, so papa sang along with this song to help. He has a very deep bass voice and sang a few counterpoint harmonies to Mr. Holland's melody. It was amazing. I wish he would let me record it! Thank you, Mr. Holland
For those who want to song along with him: Lay down Your sweet and weary head The night is falling You have come to journey's end Sleep now And dream of the ones who came before They are calling From across the distant shore Why do you weep? What are these tears upon your face? Soon you will see All of your fears will pass away Safe in my arms You're only sleeping What can you see On the horizon? Why do the white gulls call? I was able to sing it perfectly by knowing the bones of the original, knowing Peter's voice well, and using the closed captions. I appreciate your efforts to share the lyrics though. It shows that you cared enough to copy/paste for others to see. :)
Absolutely fabulous, Peter. You have such an amazing voice. Along with the production values, location and cinematography, you created another great video.
Watching the end of life of one of the most amazing people I've been blessed to call family, and the line that hits the most is "don't say we've come now to the end,...you and I will meet again"
I heard you sing this song years ago because of my love for lord of the rings. But today it hits differently because weeks ago I had to make the hardest decision in my life and sign a DNR for my son. I pray to meet him again someday; this song gives me hope that I just might.
I have to say this is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard somebody Sing. and the way you do it In acapella Style, using your own voice and your own sounds, its breathtaking. but I want to take a moment to actually thank you and your crew, so that It is known, that I am very very grateful for what you do. in all honesty and truth, for some reason it seems to have helped me with the grieving and loss of my mother. though I lost her a while ago, there really wasn't anything I find that would help me. But then I found your music and there is just something about this song by you and your crew that seemed to have opened me up. that made the grieving process seemed a little easier. to give you a little insight, As of January 7th 2015, my mom has been gone for about 11 years now. I never got over the fact of losing her, she was my best friend, everything I could have ever wanted or needed in my life. She had lung cancer...I took the loss of her very very hard, shut myself away didn't really care. Then I was looking up the soundtrack to the Hobbit and links upon links I came upon you and your crew. I just recently started watching your videos this year, and with me being a very big fan of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings and how much I've loved their songs when I was listening to them through the movie I figured why not. The moment I heard the songs by you and your crew, something changed in me, lightened me up. I don't need to continue with my life story, but I just wanted to thank you and your group. I've been interested in acapella for a while But when I seen your videos along with your wife's videos and your other crew members videos, there's just something about your music, it captivated me and you helped me. Your music helped me! I just want to throw that out there and thank you so much for that. Though we may never meet I'm sure, though I really would not mind, I'd love too meet ya'll, but I'd like to say I'm thankful that somehow someway you were actually able to help me out through your music without even knowing It. till now. :) Love all of ya, keep up the great work, can't wait to see more. ;)
Great song. LOTR is possibly the best book/movie/video game series ever, even though Tolkien's explanation of how it was actually Earth many, many years ago boggles my mind.
I did not know that. Though that may be something to do with the fact I could never read Tolkien...amazingly written but the style isn't something I can read unfortunately. I respect the author a lot though. He created something immortal.
That was actually quite a common technique among fantasy authors around that time - the author of the Conan books had a similar approach. The idea of creating fantasy worlds that are completely separate from our own hadn't really caught on, so fantasy authors generally tied their world in with the real world in some way or another.
Harriet Richards It also boggles my mind how similar his works are to the Christian Bible. But, then again, he was Christian, and a close friend of C.S. Lewis. So it's not really surprising.
I believe this song is in the end credits of the last movie. I don't think Tolkien wrote the lyrics. Tolkien's works have some similarities with the Bible, which obviously isn't surprising seeing as he was Catholic, but there's a strong pagan influence as well (primarily Germanic), and there's also a great deal of originality in them.
Samuel C. Lim added it to a playlist that has this song and video. should I add a playlist spicificly for Pippin's "the last goodbye?" I'd be willing to do so if it would help.
If you've ever mourned the loss of a loved one, or are a fan of the LOTR series, I think you will really enjoy this. It makes me think of my father who I lost two years ago.... I hope you enjoy.

the same way I do without turn off all emotion and pretend your deaf
I've had to sing emotional songs before: you really do just think about it as lyrics and focus on execution. Don't think about what they mean.

Just heard this on my playlist and decided to look it up on youtube and see what others thought of it and I found myself here, listening to this and being blown away to the brink of tears. You sir have earned yourself my respect and my subscription.
Me too! Maximum goosebumps
7 years worth of goosebumps, and this is still a favorite of mine.
this song and Shenandoah were the original two songs that really cemented you as my favorite artist
Peter, I cannot write down with words how great this is. Your cover inspired me to finally begin to write my book that has been in my mind for years. Thank you!
Good luck, and may the words on the page capture the world in your mind.
Endilbiach Thank you! :)
Bettina K. Not that I have much to go on besides your avatar/profile pic, but you dear are gorgeous, and with such a cute smirk too.
Bettina K. Good luck! :)
Bettina K. I wish you good luck with your novel! Do let us know what hen you are finished with it. :)
"With that kind of heart, When that day comes you will be singing right along side him."
-that was the quiet thought that occurred in my mind when reading the above. perhaps one day you'll see it proven true. hm?
My the point being bring friends along for your journey, it will add to the poetry.
J.R.R Tolkien among the singers...
I've been waiting for this!!!!!!
The absolute best rendition of this song...
I accidently found Peter Hollens on facebook. He has such a unique voice. I have never been introduced to cappella singing. I am glad I found it now.
I want this played at my funeral
I use this as a lullaby.
Sad note, the original artist of the song died before the movie was released. The first playing of the song was at his funeral.
Yes, I want it too. is so amazing!
Donnovan Dirkwood I would love it to have this song played at my funeral as well :) so beautiful :,(
I thought I left the window open, but appears the chills are coming from your singing. Incredible!
I will love you forever for all of your LOTR covers. :) :) :)
Every year my marching band plays this at the banquet where we play the show for the last time... playing the trombone solo is one of the most surreal times of my life...
*looks at comments before song starts* Why is everyone crying?
*midway through the song* Bursts into tears
I've listened to this song just over a thousand times in the last year. It is still the single most beautiful song I've heard, and it gives me chills every time. Thank you for making it.
Dear Mr. Hollens,
From the way you interact with fans, to the passion that is so evident in your work, you are inspiring, I have found myself being pulled out of a rut on more than one occasion thanks to your covers. Thank you so much, for making music as it should be, inspiring, enlightening, and full of heart. Thank you
Sincerely, Joel Reyes
I am here in front of my computer watching and listening you sing. Again the color make you so alive thru the screen. My two little dogs are listening and sleeping.
I want this version of this song played at my funeral, it's just... perfect.
I cant tell whether I am getting chills from your singing or from the song. This song+your voice=AWESOME
Tolkien.
He's book indeed was made for all religion pagan and abrahamic
If so, it is ironic since Tolkien himself admitted that The Lord of the Rings was inspired and informed by his deep Catholic faith. Tolkien's genius was that he wrote it in such a way that it speaks to people of all faiths and none.
I shivered at that last note. Beautiful.
Rest in Peace Bilbo. See you on the Far Shore.
Oh how I want this song to be played on the day I take my last breath.
same
I listen to it everyday, so theres a pretty big chance it will
I want it to be played at my funeral
Same! But as much as I love Peter's work, it has to be Annie Lennox's version.
I made it through the whole song, but reading this comment got me. What a beautiful send-off to have!
To the man who blessed us with stories of Middle Earth that we otherwise never would have known. RIP Christopher Tolkien, 1924-2020
May he find peace in the undying lands
So beautiful that it raises the hair on my arms and makes my heart swell with something between pain and joy. Thank you Peter.
No words... just tears. I lost my precious son almost a year ago. Though I know I will see him again one day, your music brought me a much-needed release. Thank you.
🙏🕊✨
I listened to this song 270 times and counting in the past week!
All this time later and this is still one of the best covers of this song
Amazing
Holland
For those who want to song along with him:
Lay down
Your sweet and weary head
The night is falling
You have come to journey's end
Sleep now
And dream of the ones who came before
They are calling
From across the distant shore
Why do you weep?
What are these tears upon your face?
Soon you will see
All of your fears will pass away
Safe in my arms
You're only sleeping
What can you see
On the horizon?
Why do the white gulls call?
Across the sea
A pale moon rises
The ships have come to carry you home
And all will turn
To silver glass
A light on the water
All Souls pass
Hope fades
Into the world of night
Through shadows falling
Out of memory and time
Don't say
We have come now to the end
White shores are calling
You and I will meet again
And you'll be here in my arms
Just sleeping
What can you see
On the horizon?
Why do the white gulls call?
Across the sea
A pale moon rises
The ships have come to carry you home
And all will turn
To silver glass
A light on the water
Grey ships pass
Into the West
I was able to sing it perfectly by knowing the bones of the original, knowing Peter's voice well, and using the closed captions. I appreciate your efforts to share the lyrics though. It shows that you cared enough to copy/paste for others to see. :)
Absolutely fabulous, Peter. You have such an amazing voice. Along with the production values, location and cinematography, you created another great video.
absolutely magnificent voice Terri Nakamura
Very good .. yet again :-)
***** Sizar, ***** is amazing. Did you see my note about your photo?
Hein Kuenen Hi, Hein and wishing you well!
Terri Nakamura no not yet my friend ... Today I had surgery and I just got out the hospital and thank God I'm fine :)
You're always amazing....
I pray to meet him again someday; this song gives me hope that I just might.
there are no words for this song, but it always gets my sister to sleep!
Who’s here in 2020? Absolutely love this song!
👍
2021 now and still here.
Still here during 2021
2021 and still here
2024
God, what a song, what a VOICE. Thank you.
That melody constantly in octaves😭😫 best cover my eyes are sweating now😭😭😭
Man, this is amazing. Still moves me.
Though we may never meet I'm sure, though I really would not mind, I'd love too meet ya'll, but I'd like to say I'm thankful that somehow someway you were actually able to help me out through your music without even knowing It.
till now. :)
Love all of ya,
keep up the great work, can't wait to see more. ;)
Peter, I do believe that you are an Angel. You have the voice and face of one. Keep up the GREAT WORK. Hugs.
The idea of creating fantasy worlds that are completely separate from our own hadn't really caught on, so fantasy authors generally tied their world in with the real world in some way or another.
the books are kinda hard to understand
Harriet Richards It also boggles my mind how similar his works are to the Christian Bible. But, then again, he was Christian, and a close friend of C.S. Lewis. So it's not really surprising.
I believe this song is in the end credits of the last movie. I don't think Tolkien wrote the lyrics.
Tolkien's works have some similarities with the Bible, which obviously isn't surprising seeing as he was Catholic, but there's a strong pagan influence as well (primarily Germanic), and there's also a great deal of originality in them.
One of my all-time favorites, Peter! Yours is the best version yet!
YES!
AGREE
Please do pippin's " the last goodbye". It's amazing!
yes billy boyd's
good
Samuel C.E. Lim very good. i cant listen to it because i'll cry.
shhh...he did it
Samuel C. Lim added it to a playlist that has this song and video. should I add a playlist spicificly for Pippin's "the last goodbye?" I'd be willing to do so if it would help.
This is the most beautiful thing I have ever heard.
