“End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass, and then you see it. White shores, and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise.
isn't it insane how powerful these words are when you've experienced the whole journey, when they sound quite ordinary when you just look at the words as they are.
God, this is amazing. I remember seeing this movie in theaters. I'd lost my seat to someone who let their friends in and wouldn't move, so I stood the whole movie. The feeling of elation! The sweeping conclusion! Crying like kid while clinging to an Army guy who was also crying! I love this song, and every memory it brings of the journey I had along the way of the movie releases.
Those of us fortunate enough to see the days that the movies first released were witnesses to cinematography history. Every time I watch the trilogy, I cry as the ships leave for Valinor. I think of those I’ve lost, but I also think of how fortunate I am to have felt a love strong enough to mourn the loss of. I think about how somehow, Tolkien took a bedtime story for his kids, and created characters that I feel I know in my heart. LOTR is like home for me, and this beautiful composition reminds me of that as well.
@mikepaoletta9847 well said, I've watched some really amazing movies and series, but in all my life I have never watched any cinematic work that came close to LOTR and The Hobbit, truly a masterpiece
Only a few seconds in and this is already fricking INCREDIBLE. "Into the West" has such a profound impact on me. It's the perfect song to end the series on, such a bittersweet yet overwhelmingly hopeful note. And the score during Gandalf's speech, wow. ❤
According to the special section on the Director’s Cut of *The Return of The King*, this song, ‘Into The West’, was written about a 17-year-old New Zealander with a rare form of terminal cancer. He’d even done a video about it. At one point, he’d dreamt the cancer had gone into remission, and he was on his way to a cure. He died shortly afterwards. He was only 17. This song and ‘Use Well The Days’ are tributes to him. I am 64. How old is anyone reading this?
The beauty of Tolkien's mythology is that it is a mythology of hope. Here, at the end of his most well known story, you may find the heart of that hope! Frodo, for all of his valiant efforts and those of Sam beside him, was unable to resist the powers of temptation that Sauron wielded. By that definition, he should be denied entry into Valinor, not be rewarded for his failure! And yet, as Tolkien points out in Gandalf's words "The pity of Bilbo [and Frodo] shall rule the fate of many." It's not about succeeding at the task that is given but rather what we do to accomplish that task, both before and after the event, that truly matters the most! Were it not for Bilbo's pity and Frodo's mercy, Gollum could not have accompanied Frodo and Sam to Mount Doom and if that never happened, then Frodo would have taken the Ring for himself and the world would fall into ruin before the return of Sauron. Thus it is that Frodo's journey to Valinor is not a reward for failing at his most important task, for none could've truly accomplished the task or even make it to Mount Doom, save for a very select few! Rather his journey into the west is a reward for loving the miserable, hoping for the unimaginable, and carrying a burden so dark that it waged a war for his soul every day of his life since the night that he first picked up the Ring off of the floor of Bag End! He was never meant to succeed! He was only expected to show more mercy and kindness than most would in such a circumstance! Heaven is not for perfect immortals to sneer at failure and vice, but rather is where imperfect mortals through failure can become perfected and know truly eternal peace!
Damn it... so many emotions I feel now. This video deserves be listened for all who love the work of Tolkien and Peter Jackson. A great job 👏👏👏 Into the West by Lenox and Shore is when the ships go to Valinor. This epic version is when Frodo, Bilbo, the elves, Gandalf and his horse arrives to Valinor 🌟🌟🌟
I unfortunately never got to see the films in theaters but I have seen them many times on the best tvs I can get the film on and I enjoy them so much. This music gives me a hope that home isn’t far away. That one day God will call me home and I will go gladly and face the adventure before me with no fear. For God goes before me and is with me till the end of time.
THIS was done fantastically!!!! Great work on this and keeping J.R.R Tolkiens World Alive!!!! A huge amount of emotion in this piece I felt it tug at the heart strings a lot.

Lay down
Your sweet and weary head
The night is falling
You have come to journey's end
Sleep now
And dream of the ones who came before
They are calling
From across the distant shore
Why do you weep?
What are these tears upon your face?
Soon you will see
All of your fears will pass away
Safe in my arms
You're only sleeping
What can you see
On the horizon?
Why do the white gulls call?
Across the sea
A pale moon rises
The ships have come to carry you home
And all will turn
To silver glass
A light on the water
All Souls pass
Hope fades
Into the world of night
Through shadows falling
Out of memory and time
Don't say
We have come now to the end
White shores are calling
You and I will meet again
And you'll be here in my arms
Just sleeping
And all will turn
To silver glass
A light on the water
Grey ships pass
Into the West
