His change in tone when he goes mad is absolutely fantastic. And I liked George Newbern a lot but he was born to play "evil" Sephiroth, his voice as nice-guy Sephiroth in Crisis Core always threw me off. Hoechlin hits a good middle ground, more similar to his Japanese counterpart Morikawa.
he definitely did a great job with Sephiroth. in fact most of the new actors are great. Well most of them. I do miss Quinton Flynn as Reno and Zack's new actor is... bad.
It was always sort of unclear exactly who was more in control in the original game, Sephiroth or JENOVA. But here, I feel like it's pretty clear. As soon as his eyes turn extra green and slitted, right after he breaks down and throws that book off the table, Sephiroth is gone. Even if the original dude is still in there, it probably feels like he's in a fugue state or a dream while his "mother" does all the hard work of thinking for him.
True it makes it kinda sad, plus the last scene where he smiled in the fire looks like a last goodbye smile to Zack/Cloud before his madness takes over for good
@@meloo I was gonna say. It was so menacing, but for some reason, he didn't kill them on sight like he did everyone else. He didn't really have a Cloud obsession yet cause Cloud didn't stab him or throw him into the lifestream until later, so I doubt it was to mess with him. He just chose to look at them, stand there for a second, and then turn around. Maybe he was just in a hurry to go see his Mom and got bored of stabbing. But it felt to me like that was the last bit of his human side trying to warn them to just stay back and mind their business.
I was always confused why Sephiroth went mad all of a sudden after reading all the books. However, in this demo, it does feel like Jenova is taking control of him. I mean, sure, it may be terrible to discover you're a monster and all. But Sephiroth always kept a cool mind. He wouldn't have turned that easily. Unless he was "infected" by Jenova when he got close to her door at the reactor.
@JechtNH Cloud doesn't have the cells yet here. Zack does, but not Cloud. Cloud gets his after he defeats Seph after the reactor and Hojo captures them. He spares Cloud probably because he doesn't think much of him at this time, he's just a lowly soldier and not worth wasting any more time on. He already got his revenge on the town that birthed him.
Yeah but they're overplaying it. He has two 'themes'. The original 1st theme ("Those Chosen by the Planet”) could've been remixed/remastered and used. That deep piano hit was haunting. This is... fine... but - missed opportunity for a larger score.

The part with the anonymous shinra guard crawling towards Cloud’s moms house at 11:47 floored me immediately when I was playing, something felt off about the whole memory and Tifa mentioning that he wasn’t there during the event made it all click. Cloud was there but not as the SOLDIER we know him as, but a normal shinra guard hiding his identity out of embarrassment while on a mission to support Zack and Sephiroth and he is retelling the memory through his warped mind and the elements of Zacks personality and memories that he has taken on
Yeah, this shot right here remains to this day. The most iconic shot in the Final Fantasy franchise not even ultima from ff16 couldn’t come this close.
The slaying of the mayor was unexpectedly brutal. It wasn’t a simple single slash like how other deaths are portrayed in the game. Sephiroth beheaded him, cruelly and violently. The horror in Cloud’s eyes say it all.

Lucrecia is also at fault. She willingly chose science/Hojo over love/Vincent. What kind of mother would inject a monster's cells into her unborn baby, making that baby an experiment? I'm sick of her always trying to act all victim. Deep down, she's as terrible as Hojo.
@@hazeshiro2673 falling for Hojo was a major red flag. Now Lucrecia is just as evil as Hojo. That's a tall order to do. She did help create Seph. Lucreacia is no saint and does carry the blame. However, Hojo's evilness is rooted heavily in his genius and twisted imagination.
George Newbern was perfect as Sephiroth, but you can tell that Tyler Hoechlin is *really* trying and his improvement since the previous game is noticeable. Overall, I think he's a good replacement. I just hope people don't compare him too unfairly to Newbern.
I absolutely ADORE the slowly forming One Winged Angel motif in the crawling segment at 13:17. And then into 14:05 when it's missing a note (Veni Venias and not Veni Veni Venias) into the one extra dramatic note at 14:16 before he kills the guy. It's like the birth of a villain in orchestral form.
About Sephiroth cutting Tifa, the book Trace of Two Pasts set in the remake continuity gives a full description of the consequences. Sephiroth slashing her severed bone and flesh so severely during the Nibelheim Incident required some major emergency treatment, including medical wire to close the gaps in her wounds. Once all was said and done, overly-expensive skin transplants were then used, closing up what should've been massive scarring from ever occurring.

So they just removed the shooting… I like to think of it as they are now to scared to shoot as he is this legendary hero they all look up to. Yes he’s killing everyone but I just imagine them thinking to themselves “maybe he will snap out of this??” Idk.
No. This scene is his version of the Jedi Temple March. Mentally troubled chosen hero with a brutal childhood that undergoes a massive mental breakdown culminating in him going on a major killing spree that includes tons of innocents and former allies and cements his status as an irredeemable monster. I’d say they’re pretty close in that regard.
3:25 when the music swelled with the villagers talking about helping Sephiroth because they’re concerned for him…man. They actually were able to make this all more tragic
Honestly the Nibelheim scene is so sad for me because the people there really wanted to go far and beyond with their hospitality towards Sephiroth. They wanted to give medicine to him for crying out loud! Also it is very sad for Sephiroth himself because what he believed about himself was totally false and when Zack said “Sephiroth was created”, that was when he he lost it. I wished I could be there to tell him it doesn’t matter how he was born, because the most important thing is Sephiroth can feel hurt, pain, happiness, sadness. All of these feelings is what makes him a person and he is no different than any other humans. I wished I could have said that to him. The problem is he did not have anyone that was close enough to care about him. Cloud also went through mental breakdown but luckily he has someone who would bring him back to reality. Based on this flashbacks and what was shown in Crisis Core, Sephiroth was indeed a good man. It’s terribly sad with how everything went down.
It is also false that all this project was made by Ghast, instead of Hojo. Ghast discovered Jenova and started some research, but Hojo did all inhuman evil stuff.
As good as this scene is, it would've been more terrifying if they actually shot at him and he casted stop, and slaughtered them one by one. At least it would've shown they tried, but they just stood there. They all had guns on him and they just stood there. That part made no sense to me.
Honestly. The first guy should have shot at Sephiroth, which gets sidestepped, and the guy gets slashed. The second guy is distracted and terrified, then Sephiroth kills him too. Third guy takes aim but then gets killed. The mayor death will stay the same.
I think the idea was to convey that they were all too terrified to act on it. They acted in a moment of absolute anguish and rage but they know they don't have a shred of chance to even scratch him. They probably thought the first to open fire would be the next to die so no one wanted to try it. And he started to cut them down, they were basically paralyzed by fear. It's actually realistic, there have been examples of people being in danger, aware of it and in a situation where they could have done something but didn't even move and just stood there in panic. Doesn't mean the scene isn't awkward though.
Man with no context you'd actually kind of feel sympathy for Sephiroth discovering his entire life was a lie. Then he goes and burns down an entire village and kills hundreds of innocent people for no good reason other then pure unadulterated hatred for humanity and all that sympathy gets replaced with sheer terror.

God Hoechlin sounds so good here! I honestly thought when he snaps in Crisis Core Reunion as well that he sounded amazing. But this….this is an entirely new level!
Watching the OG as a kid made me shit bricks. Watching the remake version as an adult made me go to bed scared that Sephiroth was gonna jump out of my closet. They're definitely doing things right and I'm both excited/dreading the full game.
I gotta say I LOVE that from 13:31 onward you can hear the occasional screeching sound coming from the violins (I think it's the violins) which adds so much to how fucking unhinged the whole scene is

Wow! These sequences look a lot more detailed than the original ones from the first PlayStation console. It’s just incredible what they did to capture the likeness of the source material.
It's a good thing all those town folk just stood there with guns and did absolutely nothing as they were cut down one by one and moved right into a distance where Sephiroth could kill them.

The man who is called A legend, the man who they know has gone through enchantments with mako, the enegry of the planet, which means they for sure think there’s other ways he’s enhanced that’s not public info, the man who ended the war with wutai and who’s name is known EVERYWHERE. now this same man is effortlessly bringing your entire town to ruin, who’s slaughtering anyone in his path without a shred of mercy or even effort, and now you have to stand opposite this man on the battlefield knowing full well your no match and can’t even remotely compare to the things he’s faced with in his SOLDIER career. Would you have any sort of fighting spirit to pull that trigger in the face of what’s essentially a natural distaster, especially knowing you can’t even run, cause he will catch you either by speed or magick. All this in mind would probably freeze you in place as you scramble to rationalize any sort of way you can survive

I think the scene happened much faster than we see, it's either slowed down for dramatic effect or just another neat way to show that this was Cloud imagining things the whole time. There's no way they'd just stand there doing nothing. They would probably take a bit more than usual to shoot because they'd be scared shitless, but they would shoot.
Jenova don't control sephiroth! Sephiroth just clears he's purpose by reading and notice that they are using him and then he fucks them up from the beginning! The opposite is Cloud he clear he's purpose by acting not reading unlike sephiroth and then they both take their real rules because they are the most powerful beings in that universe( Cloud more) The game tell the story in a way that it's not clear what's their purpose and character that they actually are
Indeed she does control Sephiroth. Sephiroth has Jenova cells in his body and according to the "Reunion" that all pieces of Jenova will reunite with her she demanded him to come to her as when he says: "I must go, mother is waiting". That's why they put that Jenova shot there. Sephiroth was just the first part that Jenova reclaimed.
@@Bcap222 Actually, it's a bit of both. The cells naturally influence Sephiroth but Sephiroth himself is in control by the OG FF7. In fact, the reason why he appears several times in the game despite his true body being frozen is because he's controlling Jenova's clones to shapeshift in his physical form. Jenova herself only has one line in the original game actually.

Seeing sephiroth's backstory in Ever crisis. How he viewed himself, how he viewed Shinra and it's abnormal treatment of him, this scene is granted clearer context. He was never far from the tipping point. Proximitity to Jenova, the library of logs, lack of human support, the horrific discoveries easily put him over the edge. He never knew how to be anything else than what the company designed him for, so he turned it against them when he felt he and his mother were betrayed. Especially when you had the history of the Cetra.

The real victim is Sephiroth. Jenova can rerwite memories and preyed on Sephiroth's state of mind and gained full control. You can see him losing it in his mind then he does a complete flip.
Love the musix but they needed to mix better to hear them speak clearer. I had to lower music to about 7-8 and keep dialogue at 10 so it sounded better. Hope this improves someones experience.
I just thought of something, what if Sephiroth didnt destroy Nibilhim, but Nibilhim destroyed itself? The reactor they fixed was the oldest one, so say a storm just so happens to blow something up releasing mako into Nibilhim causing the villagers to hallucinate. Sephy couldve just been heading to see Jenova while the villagers burmed their town down around him. Dude was too out of it to realize thus he doesnt help. Some people attack him due to the mako poisoning and he defends himself. Everything happens basically the same, just a different cause all blamed on Sephiroth.
It's interesting that they stopped the scene at Sephiroth saying am I even human? They didn't put in the crisis core content where Genesis got involved.
I think that not all the content of Crisis Core is a direct canon for this Remake, BUT, they are including some elements from CC. Such as Zack, Cissney and minor background story. And this is mainly because Tetsuya Nomura is merging shit from all his compilation such as Advent Children where we can see images from the movie in the final battle of the Remake. And Dirge of Cerberus including Deepground and Tsviets shit in Intermission DLC. So I thunk we can expect to see some Genesis lore around this part when Vincent finally joins the group 🎉
Hoo boy, starting a 13:00 this game goes full Kojima. Making you press buttons to slowly crawl. While the ridiculous "action" of 4 guys surrounding Sephiroth with guns, yet nobody ever fires a shot while Seph just lazily slaps them with his sword one by one. I wouldn't even call that style over substance. It's more like tropes in place of logic.
The button sequence may have been some connection to Sony for controller functions. If it didn't exist, the scene wouldn't be nearly so affected - its not very hard to believe these people were petrified with fear (its not just a bad trope). But even then, at least one should have attempted a shot, just to set things clear.
Ardyn was never really a villain that’s why, ardyn was fucked over by his brother and Bahamut and was forced to be the fall guy of his universe where Sepiroth is just evil to be evil
13:35 kinda dumb how here they could have had a scene where Sephiroth moves so fast he can dodge the bullets/cut them down easily as they try to shoot him. But instead they decided to have them act like Assassins Creed 2 characters who only try to attack once at a time, and don't even fire their guns while he casually cuts them down? I get that you could be scared and untrained, but no way do you not fire that gun in panic after the first guy gets cut down, let alone the second.

So after Seph cut down the first guy there, the others should have started either shooting or running depending on their own instinct. It could have been a monster the size of Weapon. But the moment somebody's will to live is ignited, any form of reason goes out the window as instinct takes hold in a desperate frenzy of blind action.

The impalement at 12.45 proves they are not censoring Aeriths fate, they are just showing Cloud is not perceiving it right. The stuttering when Cloud flies backwards from the door to his house into his true body, static effects like throughout the game happen and he hears his mother spirit in the lifestream telling him to live. Cloud is just seeing the other worlds in his mind due to his situation and connection to lifestream through his mako experimention. Also Aeriths dream later she has is one of the hopes and dreams realms we are exploring and people are calling them "timelines". I say this is a red herring. I call them "possibilities that never came to be". Including the Stamp designs. This is not a sequel people. This is a real remake. Omfg.
I've always wondered even from the original FF7... Sephiroth learned that he was an experiment injected with an excavated creature's cells. Was this really enough to make him go insane and evil? I can understand hating Shinra for it and wanting to kill/destroy them, but not the rest of humanity which had nothing to do with it.
No. They missed out the crucial bit of information from the original where sephiroth learns that a number of the cetra essentially abandoned the other to settle down and settle rather than journey the planet. That group became the humans that exist now whereas the other cetra are essentially extinct, Aerith being the last. Sephiroth thinking he’s a descendent of the true cetra who defeated Jenova wants retribution against the humans who fled which is why he goes on a rampage believing he is the chosen one created to take back the planet and rule it. This is completely left out in remake and why the scene falls flat.

I have a real nitpick with the lack of blood. This isn't a kid's game, there's a lunatic massacring an entire village. Why are they terrified of showing blood? Ridiculous.
Japan is weird with this type of things and showing blood would raise a lot the age rating for it and gore is not well accepted there(If i ain't mistaken, MK is banned on Japan, Doom has some censorship, RE has a lot of Censorship...)
@SilverVibes And FF16 was an 18+ rated game. 7R is aiming at a teen rating, so we get bloodless blades and trails of goo. It's unfortunate, but the age restrictions are what they are. Given all the other far-fetched nonsense JRPGs typically include, I don't find it particularly hard to suspend my disbelief. YMMV though.
I know a lot of people complain about no one shooting Sephiroth during the crawling sequence, but I thought it was neat. This part didn't happen. It's a random memory Cloud's mind put together by mixing the death of his mother (which we know happened, you can even see the real Cloud on the ground) and the knowledge that Sephiroth butchered all Nibelheim. So this entire sequence feels... *wrong,* and I believe THAT is what they were going for. Of course it's unnatural, it never fucking happened.

The slaying of the mayor was unexpectedly brutal. It wasn’t a simple single slash like how other deaths are portrayed in the game. Sephiroth beheaded him, cruelly and violently. The horror in Cloud’s eyes say it all.

George Newbern was perfect as Sephiroth, but you can tell that Tyler Hoechlin is *really* trying and his improvement since the previous game is noticeable.
Overall, I think he's a good replacement. I just hope people don't compare him too unfairly to Newbern.

I absolutely ADORE the slowly forming One Winged Angel motif in the crawling segment at 13:17. And then into 14:05 when it's missing a note (Veni Venias and not Veni Veni Venias) into the one extra dramatic note at 14:16 before he kills the guy. It's like the birth of a villain in orchestral form.
About Sephiroth cutting Tifa, the book Trace of Two Pasts set in the remake continuity gives a full description of the consequences. Sephiroth slashing her severed bone and flesh so severely during the Nibelheim Incident required some major emergency treatment, including medical wire to close the gaps in her wounds. Once all was said and done, overly-expensive skin transplants were then used, closing up what should've been massive scarring from ever occurring.

Honestly the Nibelheim scene is so sad for me because the people there really wanted to go far and beyond with their hospitality towards Sephiroth. They wanted to give medicine to him for crying out loud!
Also it is very sad for Sephiroth himself because what he believed about himself was totally false and when Zack said “Sephiroth was created”, that was when he he lost it. I wished I could be there to tell him it doesn’t matter how he was born, because the most important thing is Sephiroth can feel hurt, pain, happiness, sadness. All of these feelings is what makes him a person and he is no different than any other humans. I wished I could have said that to him. The problem is he did not have anyone that was close enough to care about him. Cloud also went through mental breakdown but luckily he has someone who would bring him back to reality. Based on this flashbacks and what was shown in Crisis Core, Sephiroth was indeed a good man. It’s terribly sad with how everything went down.

As good as this scene is, it would've been more terrifying if they actually shot at him and he casted stop, and slaughtered them one by one. At least it would've shown they tried, but they just stood there. They all had guns on him and they just stood there. That part made no sense to me.

Honestly. The first guy should have shot at Sephiroth, which gets sidestepped, and the guy gets slashed. The second guy is distracted and terrified, then Sephiroth kills him too. Third guy takes aim but then gets killed. The mayor death will stay the same.

I think the idea was to convey that they were all too terrified to act on it. They acted in a moment of absolute anguish and rage but they know they don't have a shred of chance to even scratch him. They probably thought the first to open fire would be the next to die so no one wanted to try it. And he started to cut them down, they were basically paralyzed by fear. It's actually realistic, there have been examples of people being in danger, aware of it and in a situation where they could have done something but didn't even move and just stood there in panic.
Doesn't mean the scene isn't awkward though.
Bullets would not have done anything to him, they were paralyzed in fear.

Would you have any sort of fighting spirit to pull that trigger in the face of what’s essentially a natural distaster, especially knowing you can’t even run, cause he will catch you either by speed or magick. I think the scene happened much faster than we see, it's either slowed down for dramatic effect or just another neat way to show that this was Cloud imagining things the whole time.

Indeed she does control Sephiroth. Sephiroth has Jenova cells in his body and according to the "Reunion" that all pieces of Jenova will reunite with her she demanded him to come to her as when he says: "I must go, mother is waiting". That's why they put that Jenova shot there.
Sephiroth was just the first part that Jenova reclaimed.

In fact, the reason why he appears several times in the game despite his true body being frozen is because he's controlling Jenova's clones to shapeshift in his physical form. Jenova herself only has one line in the original game actually.

Seeing sephiroth's backstory in Ever crisis. How he viewed himself, how he viewed Shinra and it's abnormal treatment of him, this scene is granted clearer context. He was never far from the tipping point. Proximitity to Jenova, the library of logs, lack of human support, the horrific discoveries easily put him over the edge. He never knew how to be anything else than what the company designed him for, so he turned it against them when he felt he and his mother were betrayed. Especially when you had the history of the Cetra.

The real victim is Sephiroth. Jenova can rerwite memories and preyed on Sephiroth's state of mind and gained full control. You can see him losing it in his mind then he does a complete flip.
Love the musix but they needed to mix better to hear them speak clearer. I had to lower music to about 7-8 and keep dialogue at 10 so it sounded better. Hope this improves someones experience.
I just thought of something, what if Sephiroth didnt destroy Nibilhim, but Nibilhim destroyed itself? The reactor they fixed was the oldest one, so say a storm just so happens to blow something up releasing mako into Nibilhim causing the villagers to hallucinate. Sephy couldve just been heading to see Jenova while the villagers burmed their town down around him. Dude was too out of it to realize thus he doesnt help. Some people attack him due to the mako poisoning and he defends himself. Everything happens basically the same, just a different cause all blamed on Sephiroth.
It's interesting that they stopped the scene at Sephiroth saying am I even human? They didn't put in the crisis core content where Genesis got involved.
I think that not all the content of Crisis Core is a direct canon for this Remake, BUT, they are including some elements from CC. Such as Zack, Cissney and minor background story.
And this is mainly because Tetsuya Nomura is merging shit from all his compilation such as Advent Children where we can see images from the movie in the final battle of the Remake. And Dirge of Cerberus including Deepground and Tsviets shit in Intermission DLC. So I thunk we can expect to see some Genesis lore around this part when Vincent finally joins the group 🎉

Hoo boy, starting a 13:00 this game goes full Kojima. Making you press buttons to slowly crawl. While the ridiculous "action" of 4 guys surrounding Sephiroth with guns, yet nobody ever fires a shot while Seph just lazily slaps them with his sword one by one. I wouldn't even call that style over substance. It's more like tropes in place of logic.
The button sequence may have been some connection to Sony for controller functions. If it didn't exist, the scene wouldn't be nearly so affected - its not very hard to believe these people were petrified with fear (its not just a bad trope). But even then, at least one should have attempted a shot, just to set things clear.

The impalement at 12.45 proves they are not censoring Aeriths fate, they are just showing Cloud is not perceiving it right. The stuttering when Cloud flies backwards from the door to his house into his true body, static effects like throughout the game happen and he hears his mother spirit in the lifestream telling him to live.
Cloud is just seeing the other worlds in his mind due to his situation and connection to lifestream through his mako experimention. Also Aeriths dream later she has is one of the hopes and dreams realms we are exploring and people are calling them "timelines". I say this is a red herring. I call them "possibilities that never came to be". Including the Stamp designs. This is not a sequel people. This is a real remake. Omfg.

I've always wondered even from the original FF7... Sephiroth learned that he was an experiment injected with an excavated creature's cells. Was this really enough to make him go insane and evil? I can understand hating Shinra for it and wanting to kill/destroy them, but not the rest of humanity which had nothing to do with it.
No. They missed out the crucial bit of information from the original where sephiroth learns that a number of the cetra essentially abandoned the other to settle down and settle rather than journey the planet. That group became the humans that exist now whereas the other cetra are essentially extinct, Aerith being the last. Sephiroth thinking he’s a descendent of the true cetra who defeated Jenova wants retribution against the humans who fled which is why he goes on a rampage believing he is the chosen one created to take back the planet and rule it.
This is completely left out in remake and why the scene falls flat.

Given all the other far-fetched nonsense JRPGs typically include, I don't find it particularly hard to suspend my disbelief. YMMV though.
I know a lot of people complain about no one shooting Sephiroth during the crawling sequence, but I thought it was neat.
This part didn't happen. It's a random memory Cloud's mind put together by mixing the death of his mother (which we know happened, you can even see the real Cloud on the ground) and the knowledge that Sephiroth butchered all Nibelheim.
So this entire sequence feels... *wrong,* and I believe THAT is what they were going for.
Of course it's unnatural, it never fucking happened.
How often can you play as sephiroth in this game?
Everything was good but...there was no blood and gore asides from Tifa lol. Would've been much more impactful.
