Eastern countries are starting to utilize their own resources that they already produce. Eastern countries have always been far better, eastern countries have more agriculture, nature, farms, nature preserves, waterfalls, natural parks, rivers. I mean there is an endless amount of things to do in a country like Thailand. And depending on the type of lifetyle you want to have will also determine your cost of living. I find far southern Thailand and far Northern Thailand to be the most affordable out of all and you actually can still experience some luxury as well for affordable prices. I am also born and raised in The United States and I will be in Thailand next month actually. I picked a very rare part of Thailand which is Trang I also like Songklha and Hat Yai it is very cultural and traditional and very affordable im looking forward to it.

As someone who has been traveling to and living in Asian countries for over 40 years now, including Japan and Thailand, I would like to let you in on a little secret. Whatever problems you may have in life are just going to follow you around wherever you go. Many people mistakenly think that the reason they are unhappy in life is due to their environment and therefore they think all they have to do is change their surroundings and everything will be fine. Unfortunately, however this is just not how it works. Those problems are always primarily internal in nature, regardless of what you might think. And as for things like “the rat race” or “keeping up with the Jonze's”, I hate to tell you this but these things are just as prevalent in Thailand as they are in the USA. Don’t let all the smiling faces and the seemingly laid-back attitudes fool you. People who live in the poor areas of Thailand are constantly borrowing money which they cannot hope to payback in order to buy cars or other things which they cannot really afford. And they are habitually and continuously “borrowing” money from friends and family to try and get out from under these lager debts. They also tend to always be looking for get rich quick schemes which have no chance of success and yet they will borrow money to give it a try. And they will even put immense pressure on their daughters (even teenagers) to constantly give them money. And pretty much every Thai woman I have ever dated - and there have been a lot - shows unmistakable signs of being raised in a highly dysfunctional family environment. There is also not much of a work ethic in Thailand, and everything is always done in a very half-assed way. There is virtually no such thing as having pride in getting the job done right. And I could go on and on. Don’t get me wrong, I love Thailand, but it is hardly some kind of utopia. By the way, I just about busted a gut laughing when you said that westerners are “not just seen as a dollar sign” in Thailand. The truth is quite the opposite I’m afraid. In fact, if you date at all you will quickly learn that you will have to weed out A LOT of women who only see you only as an ATM before you finally find a few who like you for who you are. And even if you find this girl who is deeply in love with you her parents will constantly be asking her for money when they know she is seeing a westerner because they think we are all rich. In the USA however I have never had anyone date me for financial gain. You might feel like society expects you to live up to a certain financial standard in your own country, but the truth is you were putting those expectations on yourself. Anyway, I have recently moved back to California and despite the fact that my retirement income is the same as a full-time minimum wage job I have a very nice apartment, and I have absolutely no problem paying all my bills each month and I never have to dig into savings. Everything is fine here.
That being said, of course, people all have various preferences for where they want to live and there is nothing wrong with this, as long as they are not trying to run away from their problems. I love the beach for example and that is why I spent most of my life living in the coastal areas of California. This is also why I spent many years living in Phuket. But I ultimately decided that for me Thailand is a much better place to visit than to live in permanently. For some people it will be great of course but the vast majority of Americans will always prefer to live here and to take vacations to places like Thailand. Different strokes for different folks as they say.
