@@rayevans2012 Wow, congratulations! I'm glad you're happy with it. Yeah - super hot p/u. I didn't like it with the Stainless Steel strings that came on it. They were just TOO bright, so I put on a set of my usual D'Addario Nickel Wounds which are bright, but not as harsh sounding. To tame the p/u, I lowered them as far as was comfortable. I like being able to feel them beneath my plucking fingers. But I was still getting some "pop" (the string hitting the pole piece), especially on the E string. I tried putting a drop of my wife's clear nail polish on the pole pieces. This has always worked in the past, but it didn't in this case. I wound up removing the screws from the E/A part of the p/u and removing the cover. I had some very thin foam with an adhesive backing (I don't know where it came from, but it was one of those things that was just floating around in our junk drawer for years and I knew one day that it would come in handy). Anyway, I cut two small strips and stuck them on the underside of the p/u cover. This countersunk the p/u just enough to stop the pop. The D and G strings are just fine. Oh, and I usually keep the tone on the bass rolled back to around half way or a little bit above. This is something I normally never do, but I think it smooths the sound out a bit without making it sounding muddy at all. I still haven't put mine back in the bag and I'm about to put my second new set of strings on it. I can't put it down.
@@TJH3113 Thanks Troy. Interesting to hear how you've "tamed the beast". Lol What is it with bass players being cat lovers? You've often mentioned yours, I've got two much loved moggies. Perhaps a psychologist could shed some light? Keep up the good work. Love the Jane cover. Cheers, Ray
Love all things Bruce. Amazing musician. Congratulations on the newest addition. Wow, what a treat! You look like you really enjoyed playing that tune. Also loved the Fleetwood mac riff in the jam. Lol
I have this bass too and ever since I got it, it's become my primary bass. One of the peculiar things about it is that whenever I play out somewhere or jam with people I've never met, the bass ALWAYS attracts attention, by which I mean people want to come up to me and inspect it and ask about it and ask to play it. The reason I thought this was peculiar is that it superficially looks like any other Precision, not exactly an uncommon bass, but I guess people can tell that it's not a factory Fender because of the subtly different headstock, BUT they can also tell it's not a cheap Precision copy because of the overall level of fit and finish and the striking color. So they always ask about it, and I explain it to them. Every once in a while someone will actually know who Bruce Thomas is, but most people I have to educate. Once they actually HEAR the bass, they understand exactly why I bought it. It definitely has more punch than a regular Precision when the tone knob is turned even just halfway, and if you crank it up fully you can almost make it sound like Chris Squire's Rickenbacker. One sound guy at a club asked me if it had "active electronics" after he heard it. I don't even know what the hell those are, I've never played a bass with them, but he didn't believe me when I told him it didn't, and searched the bass for a battery compartment. When he didn't find one, he was extremely impressed that a passive bass could produce the kind of tone that this one can. Again, I don't really know about the distinction, but I guess it speaks to the capabilities of the Profile. Oh yeah, and I have a video on my channel of the bass, a short clip of the Seabert theme song: th-cam.com/video/COsqU4m4cVY/w-d-xo.html
Hi Adam. Thanks for the great comment. Actually, it was one of your videos on The Bass Centre's website that helped nudge me toward getting one of these fine basses. I believe it was you "unpublished" version of "The Year of the Cat". I really liked how balanced and focused the sound of your bass was, even though it wasn't the typical sound that I gravitate towards. But, you are right, this bass can do it all. I've always been a "everything full up" guy when it comes to my basses... both p/u's selected and tone full up, but this is the first bass where I've found a very usable sound with the tone set a little above the halfway point. You should look Bruce up on Facebook, he's very accessible and a super nice, funny guy. I have to say, I haven't put this bass down since I got it.
@@TJH3113 I have known him for years and yes, he is the genuine article. He is everything a bassist should be - perceptive, drawing from a wide variety of influences, not taking anything too seriously, and of course an absolute MONSTER PLAYER. The Year of the Cat video is up on the Bass Centre site, but Bruce vastly preferred the one of "The 81" by Candy and The Kisses, since it's a Motown tune where I really utilized the punchy and precise tone on various walking lines - that video is also on the Bass Centre's customer testimonials page. Yes, we've found the "unicorn" with this bass, haven't we? I advocate it at every possible opportunity - especially if you're in America and don't have to pay the same tax rate that applies to the UK, it's probably the most bang for the buck of any instrument I can think of. It actually did the unthinkable - it improved on Fender's design.
Very cool. Those are some expensive strings! P/U's are very hot. I'm getting a little pop from my E string hitting the pole piece. Usually, a little of my wife's clear nail polish does the trick, but not with this p/u. I may need to resort to some electrical tape.
Wow! I'm so glad you made it through your bout with cancer. You are a fantastic bass player and as Bruce Thomas commented, ''Don't make it look TOO easy!'', anyone that can play ''Roundabout'' without a pick, is indeed making it look TOO easy! Have a great day, sir! (Joseph Leo DeCelle, Viking fantasy/fiction author).
Hey Troy thanks for the video. I had not heard of this bass maker. That bass is so clear and punchy in the song. I've listened to many of your videos and I think you play an excellent bass. Would you be interested in doing a video with that bass and a darker tone with some foam at the bridge ?? Would love to hear the range of your new instrument
It was my pleasure, thanks for watching, Richard. Actually, I've never liked hearing myself that was, but I may try it out one day. On my "To Sir With Love" video, I actually did use some foam under the strings back by the bridge, but I didn't darken the tone... if you'd like to check that out.
Thanks for sharing the story Troy. You are indeed a fortunate man to have a loving partner who recognizes and is so supportive of your unique talents. The back story of the bass is of great interest. I greatly look forward to your weekly output it is all inspirational and from time to time I try to copy. ( ha ha). Enjoy your bass Troy. It's a beauty!
I’ve recently learnt Busy Bodies from Armed Forces. Party Girl is great too. Looking forward to hearing you play that. My son imported a Dingwall NG2 5 string from England last month. I had similar anxiety/ apprehension as you in regard to the process, but the bass arrived in good time and there were no problems.
Well, there's another one I'm not familiar with and will have to check out. While doing some research on this song, I came across an Elvis Costello database of songs he's written and it's got to be in the hundreds! Party Girl is just about done... just working out the variations during the fadeout. Glad your Son's bass arrived safe and sound. DHL handled my delivery. International stuff is their specialty. My guess would be that the greatest comes during the last part of the journey, when it's handed off to the local carrier.
Great video and backstory! Awesome playing of a tricky, and busy tune! Glad you’ve finally found a Pbass to love. I’ve always been a bit underwhelmed by most of the ones I’ve played, except for a friend’s ‘66. (which i guess Bruce’s original was similar vintage). I was seriously considering ordering one of these signature models, but I found a G&L L-1000, which has become one of my favorites.
Another killer review and cover… Just love that tone. I both the P and J and great to watch Bruce’s custom demo. Tks greatly and great to hear your back story. Life’s short. Buy a bass!
Sounds like you walked that one pretty good! Congrats on the new bass. The 1958 Precision you demoed a few years sounded pretty darn good to me as well.
It wasn't too awful bad. Having very little music theory under my belt, walking just doesn't make much sense to me... I just memorize the patterns and play along. Yeah, that was a pretty nice one, if not outrageously expensive. I think it sold for around $18,000!
Daaamn that is an awesome sounding bass. Also endless thank you for turning me on to new music. I wasn't familiar with Elvis' work too much, but I'm gonna try to get these walking bass lines under my fingers tomorrow, they're really awesome
I'm glad you liked it, I like it as well, even though it's not the usual sound I gravitate toward. I'm also so glad to hear that I've expanded your horizons a bit. I find it amazing, since I'd say that I was, at one time, the most narrow-minded person that I knew. I'm sure you'll feel the same joy that I did every time you play this song through.
wow, you are right.... that bass is very bright sounding, almost like a 4001s... but like you, i can always justify owing another bass, and i honestly think that there will be one of these in my future real soon. Ill have to see if i can score a copy of that book you mentioned as well. Glad i found this video, last night i got smashed in the studio while cranking both the Trust and Imperial Bedroom albums through the pa monitors, and all i could think of was Bruce's deep bass lines along with hoping I'd wake up today ok, tis tge season afterall.... luckily i did but even more luckily i found this video... well done mate, cheers !!
I'm glad you liked the sound. It's extremely focussed sounding for a Precision. I play it all the time. I recently recorded 5 more Bruce Thomas bass-lines (in addition to the 2 or 3 I already had done), so be prepared for plenty of Bruce in the near future.
Hey Troy been listening to Armed Forces and trying to pick my way thru "Goon Squad" , absolutely love Bruce Thomas. Any chance you can put it together as there is very limited content on this track.
Funny, I have been watching your videos for years to learn various bass lines and here you are reviewing this bass. So Bruce Thomas is one of my favorite bassists....ever! Not only because I love EC, but because of the fact that often at times, a song that may have been a bit on the weaker side, was given soul/life becasue of the uplifting and melodic bass lines. I once realized, whilst listening to Imperial Bedroom, that it was the bass parts that were keeping me engaged! I mean come on, Shabby Doll? Ok, this is your site. Thanks for all of your great bass covers and here's wishing you great health and success in all you do? Lastly, do you know what strings Bruce typically used?
I came a bit late to the Elvis/Bruce Thomas party, but I'm here now! Bruce is such an incredible and inventive player, as well as being a super nice guy! I read somewhere that someone, somehow, took Bruce's bass-lines out of a few signature EC songs and put in a "run of the mill" bass part. Allegedly, the songs were nearly unrecognizable. I think I remember Bruce telling me that he used Rotosounds... always round wound, but I can confirm that the next time I chat with him. Thanks so much and take care.
Thanks for this review and for sharing your connection with Bruce Thomas. He is one of the most melodic and creative rock bass players ever, and it's really special that you made a connection with him! Question for you: how much extra did it cost for you to import the bass to the US? Cheers, John
@@pathocracyclub8904I can’t say enough good things about this bass. I believe, when you order the bass you can specify what type of strings (Bass Centre brand) the bass will be shipped with. I didn’t take advantage of that and mine shipped with their Stainless Steels. I found them to be too bright and the bass was transformed when I put my usual Nickels on.
I happen to LOVE Precisions! This bass sounds like a precision set up properly with a great choice of strings. But more important; I am convinced more than ever before that Troy could make a washtub and a broom, single string bass sound like a Steinway. Great job on the tune!!!
This is a great video on multiple levels. I love the stories, and that's a beautiful bass! It sounds really nice and punchy. I'd never heard that song, but it does have a great line. 👍👍
Thanks a lot Jim. You know, for a couple of reasons, writing the lengthy introductions was becoming a bit difficult. The talking thing is a bit risky, but it seems to be working out ok. I was more prepared than usual for this one. More songs have been recorded with a Precision than probably any other bass, so it's a pretty familiar sound. I'd never heard it either, before Bruce suggested it.
Thanks for this video! I've been thinking for years about buying a precision type bass. I may just have to check this one out. I'm like you in that I love to hear other people play them but they never did feel/sound right in my hands. I gravitated towards the MusicMan basses. I might have to pull the trigger on one of these. Great playing as usual. I've always known Bruce Thomas had some inventive and cool lines. I just never listened too closely. I may have to change that too. Thanks again!
It was my pleasure. I'm very happy with my selection, for all of the reasons I mentioned. It feels a bit like getting to try on Superman's cape for a bit... playing the bass-lines of someone who I hold in such high regard, on a bass similar to the one he used to craft these great parts. Thanks for taking the time to leave such a great comment, Marc!
Thanks Adam. Yeah, it's a pretty surreal feeling for me. I'm also in casual contact with another big favorite of mine, Dan Roberts of The Crash Test Dummies, but I try my best to stay as low key as possible. Totally agree with your last statement.
I think Bruce Thomas should have received writing credits on a lot of EC’s songs. He deserves some royalties; If he came up with the bass riff for “I Don’t Want To Go To Chelsea”, then he deserves writing credits.
@@handidrummed What I usually do is to raise the Drive knob up to the point where I can just hear a hint of fuzziness, then I back it off a hair. This way I'm able to take advantage of the added tone I can get from the function without the actual distortion.
It comes with steel roundwounds which are comparable to the Rotosounds that Bruce was known to use back in the day. The Bass Centre will actually string it and set it up with whatever style of their strings you prefer.
@@brucethomas6886 I ended up buying one Bruce and I absolutely love it. For me, you are the star of The Attractions above everyone else in the band including “Elvis”. Thank you for the inspiration and enjoyment.
First, so happy that you conquered the big “C” years back. You played a tough bass line extremely well. I’m not familiar with the tune but I didn’t catch any clams. Bravo!

@@TJH3113 Looks like the clam was about 18:53. I saw your eyes and maybe you played the wrong note but it, to my ear, sounded fine. I heard Victor Wooten say once, “you’re only a semitone away from a note that works.” Keep up the great work!

Thanks Troy. Interesting to hear how you've "tamed the beast". Lol
What is it with bass players being cat lovers? You've often mentioned yours, I've got two much loved moggies. Perhaps a psychologist could shed some light?
Keep up the good work. Love the Jane cover.
Cheers, Ray
Love all things Bruce. Amazing musician. Congratulations on the newest addition. Wow, what a treat! You look like you really enjoyed playing that tune. Also loved the Fleetwood mac riff in the jam. Lol
I came a bit late to the Bruce Thomas club, but I'm glad I made it. Thanks, I really did enjoy this one.
Fantastic Imperial Bedroom Jam at the end 👍👍👍👍👍 Loved it!
Thanks again!
Got one of these basses last year- Love it! put TI low tension flats on it and just lovely to play and great colour and string spacing - hot pups!
Very cool. Those are some expensive strings! P/U's are very hot. I'm getting a little pop from my E string hitting the pole piece. Usually, a little of my wife's clear nail polish does the trick, but not with this p/u. I may need to resort to some electrical tape.
I never knew they made a signature bass for Bruce - sounds and looks great!
Yes, they're made by/for The Bass Centre in England. They have a number of signature models in their line-up. Thanks, I'm glad you liked it.
Me too! So far, so good. Thanks so much for the very kind words, Joseph.
On my "To Sir With Love" video, I actually did use some foam under the strings back by the bridge, but I didn't darken the tone... if you'd like to check that out.
beautiful man great work
Thanks a lot!
My pleasure. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Yes, Lynn is indeed a treasure. Me, not so much... haha.
Thanks! I've actually had a '64 and a '66 and was able to borrow a real '58 from my brother in law a while back, but I really like this one better.
Bravo! Thanks for doing this. Love BT and your work. Pls consider doing more BT bass lines. Tnx!
Grazie! Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to leave such a nice comment. Definitely some more BT on the very near horizon!
Well if there has ever been an opportunity for a Watching the Detectives cover, this must be it!!!
I've definitely heard that one, but will have to check it out.
What a great job.And the bass sounds so good.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks Kev!
Another killer review and cover… Just love that tone. I both the P and J and great to watch Bruce’s custom demo. Tks greatly and great to hear your back story. Life’s short. Buy a bass!
Thanks a lot Rick!
@@TJH3113 Check out Gracie Terzian youtube. She's a great teacher for music theory! She makes it a lot easier to understand and teaches it properly.
Congrats on the new bass, it sounds really good! Never heard this song until today. What a great bass line! Thanks for turning me on to it.
Thank you very much, I'm very happy with it. It is such a great song and great bass-line, isn't it? My pleasure.
Incredible growl! Thank you for making this video 😊🎵🎶👍
It was my pleasure. Thank you for watching and for taking the time to comment. Take care!
i like hearing about who you are, after watching you play bass for so long.
That's great to hear.
Great playing
Thank you
Daaamn that is an awesome sounding bass.
Hey Troy been listening to Armed Forces and trying to pick my way thru
"Goon Squad" , absolutely love Bruce Thomas. Any chance you can put it together as there is very limited content on this track.
I’ll check it out. Thanks for the suggestion David.
The Loved Ones is one of my favorite BT lines.
Awesome! I hope you liked it. I definitely enjoyed learning and playing it!
A pbass? From Troy? We truly are living in crazy times ;)
Thankfully I love pbasses and your playing!
No better time to get your affairs in order. Then end is coming soon!
Thanks again Mishak.
Great job on the song....the bass sounds amazing ! I can see me making a purchase even though I have 4 x P basses already ! A great looking bass too.
Thanks a lot. I'm really very happy with everything about the bass.
Don't beat yourself up about getting a new bass. It's great to see a bass well played!
I'll try. Thank!
That was really a nice awesome video.
Thank you very much!
Living in Paradise and Lipstick Vogue by Elvis are great too
I'll check 'em out.
Thanks for this review and for sharing your connection with Bruce Thomas. He is one of the most melodic and creative rock bass players ever, and it's really special that you made a connection with him! Question for you: how much extra did it cost for you to import the bass to the US? Cheers, John
If I remember correctly, shipping was included, but I could be wrong. There were no additional customs charges or anything like that.
@@TJH3113 Thanks! I'm considering a BT Profile fretless.
You're in very good company!
Haha...
Thanks.
It's absolutely beautiful. 🧡
I think so too! Thanks Rose.
Sounds great. Nice and edgy for a precision
Holy crap what a beautiful sound!!!!!!
Yes I went straight to the cover, but now I'll go back for the rest! 🤣
I'm glad you liked it. If I've got to have a P-bass, this one is it.
@@TJH3113 it's fantastic!
Another awsome cover thanks👍
Thanks a lot!
Sounds great, and so cool to have a connection with BT, one of my favorite bassists (EC has been so diminished without him)
Thanks Adam. Yeah, it's a pretty surreal feeling for me. I'm also in casual contact with another big favorite of mine, Dan Roberts of The Crash Test Dummies, but I try my best to stay as low key as possible. Totally agree with your last statement.
I think Bruce Thomas should have received writing credits on a lot of EC’s songs. He deserves some royalties;
If he came up with the bass riff for “I Don’t Want To Go To Chelsea”, then he deserves writing credits.
What a lovely bass mate. 😃👍
I meant to add, what a great sound and an awesome bass line too. How many basses do you own now? 😉👍
Thanks William.
Too many!
Ya sold me. I'd been holding out. Bass sounds amazing, but i realize most of the sound is in your fingers and playing. Very nice.
It's an awesome bass and, as I whittle down my collection, one that I would not consider selling. Thanks.
@@TJH3113 duly noted.

For me, it was a great experience.
You're great, man!
Aw, and you are too kind. Thanks though.
What are you running the bass through? EQ? It sounds phenomenal. It screams Bruce Thomas.
Always one SansAmp pedal or another. This was a Para-Driver Ver. 1.
@@TJH3113 did you have the drive section on at all?
@@handidrummed What I usually do is to raise the Drive knob up to the point where I can just hear a hint of fuzziness, then I back it off a hair. This way I'm able to take advantage of the added tone I can get from the function without the actual distortion.
Oh WOW
BRUUUUCE'S BASS!
I want
Play Lip Service, Possession, or This Year's Girl!!!
Pretty cool, isn't it? I recently did "Lip Service". Let me know if you have trouble finding it.
Does it come with the strings that Bruce Thomas uses? What kind of strings does Bruce use?
It comes with steel roundwounds which are comparable to the Rotosounds that Bruce was known to use back in the day. The Bass Centre will actually string it and set it up with whatever style of their strings you prefer.
@@TJH3113 Thanks. I knew I had the option to choose strings but figured I would go with whatever Bruce uses in this case.
Yes it does
@@brucethomas6886 I ended up buying one Bruce and I absolutely love it. For me, you are the star of The Attractions above everyone else in the band including “Elvis”. Thank you for the inspiration and enjoyment.
Loved the video, the info and the song!
So great to hear. Thanks!
First, so happy that you conquered the big “C” years back. You played a tough bass line extremely well. I’m not familiar with the tune but I didn’t catch any clams. Bravo!
Thanks Art. I shy away from terms like "beat" or "conquered" because, sadly, more often it's just outrunning it for a time. There was a juicy clam in there, you've got to watch my eyes for the tell. Thanks again.
@@TJH3113 I will rewatch. Be well.
@@TJH3113 Looks like the clam was about 18:53. I saw your eyes and maybe you played the wrong note but it, to my ear, sounded fine. I heard Victor Wooten say once, “you’re only a semitone away from a note that works.” Keep up the great work!
It was actually at 18:49. I just choked the note out.
@@TJH3113 we all do that occasionally (not that I’m even close to your level). I’m going to watch it again. And I have to watch your most recent video. Some days time just runs out. I love the old-school "clams" reference.
I think that Buddy Rich would be proud, do you agree?
@@TJH3113 Ha! That's the first thing I thought of. Those tapes are amazing!

I never understood how he could sit for hours and learn songs but can’t get through a movie. Now after hearing you say this I’ll have to give him a break. Thanks Troy.
Very cool. I don't remember mentioning that in the video, but I must have because it's true.
I like this bass part because it hits all the strings + all over the fret board.

I've got a question for you, Troy, or the gallery, or even Bruce himself.
Did Bruce Thomas play the bass line on Getting Closer - Wings?
Thanks a lot Patrick!
Has the same Headstock as a Lakeland.
Or a Sadowsky, or a MusicMan, who all borrowed their design from Fender.
