    Love Elvis Costello and one of the reasons is certainly because of of Bruce. He just make his songs "pop". You certainly looked like you thoroughly enjoyed learning and playing this. Rock on!

    Hi Troy, I just discovered your channel, and boy am I glad I did! Your Bruce Thomas covers are fantastic. I think you really nailed down the many variations on this one. The skipping and hanging rhythms, the bouncy jumping all over the neck, the somewhat "odd" run at the end -- these make Bruce Thomas bass lines powerful, unforgettable and totally fun to play. I spent hours back in the 80s trying to figure out some of these Elvis Costello songs. If only we had had TH-cam back then!

    Another great tune and another awesome cover..I have to tell you and please don’t take this the wrong way.. I look back at a lot of your older stuff (to learn from) and it seamed you where just more about business..but now more recently you seam much happier and willing to take some time to talk in your videos.. I personally think it’s great!! The variety of stuff you’ve been doing as of late has been terrific..of course your older stuff is great also...I only wish I would have found your channel so much sooner back when I decided to take up playing again.. thank you so much for all the time and effort you put into your videos.. I hope also all is going well with your mom and the job..have a great day..

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you very much, Drew. With regard to your statement (of course I did not take it "the wrong way"), I never thought I really had anything to say that anyone would be interested in hearing. Years ago, I started writing a bit beneath the videos and some people seemed to respond well to that. Sometimes, the pieces just wrote themselves, but, other times, the writing took a lot out of me... to sit down and actually think of something to write about. I would say that I probably communicate better through writing than I do speaking because I can go back and make revisions and refocus on the point I am trying to make. When I speak, all bets are off, but, if I don't have the time or the energy or the inspiration to write something, I'll roll the dice and speak. I find it extremely funny that some of my most popular videos are the ones where I'm speaking. What's the matter with you people... haha. I guess what it comes down to is that I've been doing this for over 10 years now and many of my viewers and frequent commenters are like family, so I've finally gotten comfortable enough to be myself a bit more, for better or worse... haha. As for the "effort" I put into my videos, I'd be doing this anyway. I'm just grateful to have a place to archive the songs I've learned and, to my amazement, where some people actually find some benefit from them. The actual "work" comes from responding to comments (which I feel very strongly about doing), but, in the end, I'm happy to do it. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to leave such a thoughtful comment, Drew.

    Oh my goodness, I’ve got a story to go with this one. I used to play this song in a cover band, and when one of our guitar players introduced it to us, he just said “I have this song.”. I thought that meant he wrote it, and so he showed us the changes and we played it regularly for a number of years. Fast forward to now and I click on your video and it all comes flooding back. I now realize he never actually said he wrote it, I just assumed and you know how that goes. Thanks so much for

    Great to hear this Troy. This Year's Model blew me away when it was released and it's the album that turned me on to bass playing - and total agreement about how underrated Bruce Thomas is. It's very regrettable that Bruce Thomas and Mr McManus parted ways because I don't think my namesake ever really achieved the heights of those early albums subsequently. As regards the question of chorus, I think what may be going on is that there is another instrument which is doubling the bass line in the chorus. It sounds like some kind of keyboard sound, like a low range oboe or upper range basoon patch with a lot of reverb on it. You can hear that it actually gets a little sloppy when you get to the "If you change your mind you can send it in a letter to me" line. That's not to take from an absolutely great song and album. PS "Don't act like you're above them, just look at your shoes" one of Elvis's great put down lyrics!

    I certainly thought there was chorus, or another effect, where you did. I remember from the days when this album came out the sensation of pure joy playing along to this track in particular - it almost didn't matter if you hit bum notes or screwed up the progressions because the voicing and sheer bounce and energy of the song carried you through!!!
    However I did think of the name Brinsley Schwarze at first, though I think he was with Graham Parker & the Rumour then - another great selection of tracks to cover too!
    Finally, I want to add that I really like the style of this video, with the additional analysis and your own feelings, as it adds quite a bit to the overall substance compared to your more standard covers! Keep going this way!!

      I'm glad I wasn't the only one. How amazing is it that I was able to ask "the man" himself about it? I agree with your assessment about the amount of exuberance in this song and, probably, others like it.
      I'm not familiar with the artist you mentioned but I'll try to look him up.
      Thanks. I have to really be fired up about a bass-line to turn the microphone on. Sometimes it's a bit liberating, as the writing can sometimes take a lot out of me, but I hate running the risk of making a fool of myself.

    Great job on such an extremely tricky baseline. It's one of those songs where you sing along to the baseline rather than the words because it is so melodic. Troy, I know you aren't really an Elvis fan, but I'd love to see your interpretation of "Human Hands" from "Imperial Bedroom". The third verse is full of bass chords that I'd love to see you figure out. Great job as always.

    Hi Troy, really enjoyed this upload. I have studied a number of your other uploads for bass lines that I love and was wondering how you decide your fingering. You seem to favour moving up the neck rather than moving across strings. Most educators (on the internet at least) seem to aim for remaining in a position as long as possible to improve efficiency. Do you move up the neck to maintain a consistency of tone, or to avoid the G string which can sound a bit thin, or in your research are you following the original bassists positioning? Now that you are commenting your videos, it would be great if you could add a few words of explanation or give a few tips. Cheers.

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. I think that it sometimes depends on the bass I'm playing. Some basses maintain their "tone" as you move up the neck better than others. When I was younger, I would rarely play anything on the E string above the 5th fret for fear of losing clarity and I'd always favor the "skinny strings" because they sounded clearer and more focused. My way of thinking has changed a bit and I will often let the bass dictate where it sounds best. I should also say that, as I've grown older, I may favor playing up higher on the neck because it's a shorter arm reach and less of a finger stretch. I'll keep your suggestion in mind the next time I do a "talkie".

      TJH3113 : Correct Troy,Grahm Mayby was with Joe Jackson. That’s why I questioned someone saying he was on an Elvis Costello album? These were all great albums for bass lines. The early Bowie stuff as well. Same as you, I’m more of a fan of the actual musicians sometimes than the band as a whole. English band “ Madness” has a good bass player but the band came/went really quick.

    this song is absolutely nothing without the Bruce Thomas's bass line , it drives the song , both as bass and as lead , Elvis Costello's guitar and voice is really just background noise . Could I recommend a listen to "Elvis Costello live - Lip service " circa 1978 on You Tube , which I think proves my point

    • @TJH3113
