I believe, after years of believing Book of Mormon events took place in central America, that the Book of Mormon took place in the American Heartland ranging from the Gulf of Mexico all the way up to the Great Lakes.
There is actually a theory that I think is the most likely (I don't have it memorized how it works) where The mesoamerica and Heartland ideas could both be correct. Something about how some of them split off or something like that
He left out an important fact. When the Book of Mormon was written, there were over 200 "anachronisms" How many now? 34. That means that over 160 things were contrary at that time, yet Joseph Smith somehow randomly guessed that all of them would be found to be correct in years after his death according to critics. Also. The list has almost been completely knocked out with less than 2% of archeological sites dug at (that we even know about, could be more that we haven't found)
I spent four weeks in Belize at the end of 2019. One of the site guides at Uxbenka told me that when you look out from the top of the main tower any peak that is not covered with crops is a ruin because it's illegal to farm the ruins. From the view of that site alone, which is still in its undisturbed state, it is clear that only a small fraction of the ruins in Belize are known, because many of them are still not reachable easily by car. Yes time and science may yet reveal that revelation is better than the metric system.
I think there is so much evidence of the book of mormon that no one could point to just one or even a dozen things. Cities under water, city of gold mentioned in the BOM, sacrificial burials etc..... The evidence is everywhere.
I love Tad R. Callister and have read his book on the BoM. It makes much more sense, though, for the BoM to be in North America. I don't think much attention should be given to archaeological work in Central America and the Maya for evidence.
One question I have about the historical Book of Mormon is the allegory of the olive tree. I know people in Jerusalem would be familiar with the work it takes for the olive tree. I am wondering if the peoples in the Americas could relate to that allegory? If anyone knows when the native people started working with olives trees I would really like that information.
Jacob was quoting the prophet Zenos in Jacob chapter 5. "Behold, my brethren, do ye not remember to have read the words of the prophet Zenos, which he spake unto the house of Israel, saying" Not sure how well the people of Jacob's time could relate, but Zenos' people sure could - sounds like he knew quite a bit about it.
Most, if not all, of the things he mentions are found in North America, in Hopewell civilization territory-mostly in the eastern half of the United States.
The prophecies and promises contained in the book of Mormon, pinpoint exactly where the book of Mormon took place! Phrases, such as this land, choice, land, land of liberty, new Jerusalem, or what so ever nation shall possess it, must be the area of the United States! See D & C 125:3. There is only one land of liberty in the western hemisphere. That phrase alone tells us the United States is the Land of the book of Mormon. The narrow neck of land is not the panama canal.

Can I ask why you believe that, instead of where the data point, that Joseph made up stories for power& wealth& sex?
Perhaps that’s how Joseph Smith saw zelph in the heartland.

I am not familiar with any cities made of gold that have been found in the heartland? Please share what you have discovered.
There is no evidence. Church Archeologists searched for years they couldn’t find any
