@Hailey Allen While the LDS is better than many other Christian denominations / groups by the virtue that they accept that some people simply have same-sex attraction and that it is not something that can be changed and that attempts to do so are harmful, the official LDS stance is: "The experience of same-sex attraction is a complex reality for many people. The attraction itself is not a sin, but acting on it is." So, basically, the church believes that gay people should live lives of misery, bereft of mutual human love and affection. While you might love gay people, the church's stance certainly isn't very LOVING towards gay people if they would condemn them to that fate. Imagine someone telling you that your ability to share, experience, and receive love was something for which you deserved disciplinary action if you acted upon it, and being forced to choose between your beliefs coupled with a life of loneliness and never knowing the loving embrace of a partner or choosing to have to give up your beliefs in order to be with someone you love. No matter how you frame it and how much you love gay people, it's still terrible.

I’m a member as well. My brother is gay but has drifted away from the church because of a temple experience he had. He was waiting in the locker room area and was wearing a shirt that had a rainbow on it that says human. People called him disgusting and everybody would move away from him. I really enjoyed this video! As a member of the church, I really appreciated seeing a video that was positive and educational! A lot of times were represented inaccurately and unfairly, but I really feel this video was a fair and accurate representation of members of the church. I’d love to see more videos similar to this!
I was pretty sure the mole would have been a former member… it’s not really in the spirit of the game. It would be extremely difficult to fool the group if you never attended church. The easiest way to root out the mole would be to ask the group to recite ANYTHING from the church’s literature… if you’re not a member you would never commit something to memory. A vast majority of us have something memorized.
What do you mean it's not in the spirit of the game? It would make the most sense for the mole to be a former member for the very reason you pointed out
I don't know how far ahead they know they're going to participate in this, but if money is on the line you can be sure that I'd educate myself on the topic and I'd try my best to look the part even if I have to commit something to memory.
I agree. I figured they'd go with an ExMo, which feels a bit disingenuous, but when you're an outsider trying to make just enough sense of a complex culture to put together a short contest, I also get it. I've always been curious about how this would go down, and it pretty much did the way I expected, but I know plenty of people who have technically never been Mormon who could've played the part.
@@francescoghizzo my parents are temple members, and my dad was a second counselor, they drink coffee and caffeinated drinks like energy drinks and soda.
I find that kinda funny because while some of the more stringent members might not use the term "Mormon", I know plenty of members, particularly younger ones, who really don't care and just say Mormon because it's easier and kinda ingrained into the church's identity. I would have never even thought to vote for someone just because they were using the term "Mormon"
@@simplyepic3258 If you're an active member then you'd know that the prophet has said that we should avoid using the term mormon and since most of the participants are active members they knew this
@@legacy756 I'm aware. Lots of active members just don't care. Monson said the exact opposite (that we should embrace the term Mormon) so plenty of people don't really see it as a big deal one way or another.
Most Mormons don't care until the most orthodox member jumps in to remind them that they're supposed to care (e.g. the "Ohhh" moment when Caleb called it) because their prophet recently said that the word "Mormon" is a literal victory for Satan. Most Mormons are really chill people but they're so easily called back into line by the most toxic authoritarian members, which is why so many people leave. Trying to toe an invisible line is exhausting.
Making the mole a former member is kind of cheating honestly lmao... but as someone who has been going inactive recently (not because of the people within the church, but mostly because of the institution itself) it was so important to hear Natalie's message. Love all their energies!

I've met missionaries before, and we had an interesting conversation. I'm an atheist and so, they tried to convert me. I didn't appreciate that, but I appreciated learning more about their belief system, which seemed very structured and corporal to me as an outsider. This is not an insult in any way. Just the impression I got from hearing about how their hierarchy worked. It goes without saying that I respect their faith and everyone's faith. Each to their own. Let's all respect each other's beliefs without trying to impose our own.
I think we support freedom of religion more than most. That doesn't me we don't want to share something that has made life so much easier. So many Ideas are forced on us even more. atheism is one that is forced on us at school, etc. But I get your point well said. Best of luck in your life.
I’m also an atheist and recently was reached out to by a missionary. Having a dialogue with her has been very interesting as someone who doesn’t agree with religion as a whole. I think they are really fascinating I just cannot wrap my mind around how people have so much faith
I love how Natalie addressed that we are all loved in the church and out of it. I think most people forget that and feel as if they don’t have a place. I’m still trying to figure out who I am as a person and it’s really tough especially when you have the pressure of all these values we follow in the church but something that really helps me is remembering all the speeches and guides in the Lds app. Lgbtq+ is always a tough topic to bring up which always made me very insecure about whether I am loved or not but the song “love one another” really gives me the spirit to feel heavenly father’s affection for me. ❤
I am a member of the lds church and it always makes me sad when people share bad experiences of how some members treated them. The church isn’t 100% perfect and has some things that could get better for some members but I still believe it is true!

I thought this too. And pretty much all of the Mormons here in Eugene seem very accepting of LGBTQ people. I know that’s not the case other places though.
It's location based. There are huge church areas where there are very few white people. Just depends on where you are (and how many racists are in your congregation, too, because that can alienate people into leaving).

On the inside it seems like it's about love but it's conditional love. If you're gay, they don't accept you. If you're not mormon, they don't accept you. They only help each other. Even their own children will be disowned in many cases if their children admit they no longer wish to be apart of the church. You clearly are mistaken about what the church teaches, because it has nothing to do with power, wealth, and selfishness.
@@Kiakyu Everything you listed is very individually based and not what the church teaches as a whole. The ward I grew up in has been as well, he will frequently attend with me and everyone has always been supportive and kind. Are there people like how you described? For sure. But they are not the majority and they do not truly follow Christs teachings.
That was fun to watch. I like that the participants are shown as coming from a lot of different places in terms of faith. They're even in different stages about what they believe at the moment. Your statement about “they are highly discouraged from questioning anything in the church..” just isn’t true. I’ve been a member active and non-active my entire life and have had many questions, but I’ve never been discouraged from asking them or trying to find answers to those questions by anyone, leaders included.

"If the mole is still in the box, they win the cash prize. But it the mole is found, the remaining members will split a cash price amongst themselves, then the Church will take half of it."
I was surprised they didn’t quiz each other on the vernacular of the church (ward, stale, Relief Society, Cultural Hall, etc). Or maybe talk about unique points of doctrine. I’m a life-long, active member, and I don’t think I could have come up with a talk from General Conference on the spot.
We talked about having a personal relationship with the Savior and how our church understands the Atonement, but unfortunately those parts were edited out.
The 30 seconds to explain your case makes no sense in my opinion. Usually nothing of value comes out of it. Instead, Jubilee should give the people who voted for that person the opportunity to anonymously share why they are suspicious of them and give the suspected contestant an opportunity to respond (in this 30 second duration).
Would've been a lot faster and easier if the mole was someone who had never been Mormon lol, at least she had the benefit of experience and having some of the vernacular.

I really loved that Natalie addressed being LGBTQ+ in the church. We are taught to love everybody, and I know I am personally saddened for those in the community who have felt hate from members.
@Hailey Allen While the LDS is better than many other Christian denominations / groups by the virtue that they accept that some people simply have same-sex attraction and that it is not something that can be changed and that attempts to do so are harmful, the official LDS stance is:
"The experience of same-sex attraction is a complex reality for many people. The attraction itself is not a sin, but acting on it is."
So, basically, the church believes that gay people should live lives of misery, bereft of mutual human love and affection.
@@vorpal22 you should read Ben Schalaty’s book about being a gay member of the church. He addresses the same things you seem to be questioning and since he’s gay he can explain it far better than anybody else.
@@bremjo7929 I appreciate the suggestion, but I've already done extensive research on being gay and Christianity / LDS / JW, and I know the "clobber passage" rebuttals. Thanks, though, and I hope you're enjoying the rest of your weekend!
natalie, thank you!!! i really needed to hear what you said at the end about being in the church and being lgbtq. that gives me hope and strength. because there are many others out there who say you can’t be gay and religious, and i know a lot of people think that way but it was nice to hear someone say that it was okay.
I was raised religious and that was my biggest reason to stop participating. I felt like I had lived the morals and teachings perfectly only to have realized that about myself and I immediately felt unwanted or that I had done something wrong to be "punished" with it or something. Those who use religion as a tool to push their own bigotry have absolutely no business mixing with actual people of faith. The line has been far too blurred more and more recently.

I’m a member as well. My brother is gay but has drifted away from the church because of a temple experience he had. I was thinking the same thing!!! I rlly hope this shines a new light for people
I was pretty sure the mole would have been a former member… it’s not really in the spirit of the game.

Same, it’s definitely not perfect just like any other religion, but there are many things about it that I love
My fiance and his family were raised mormon and they have began drifting away from the church. Unfortunately there are so many terrible things hidden from members in the church. On the inside it seems like it's about love but it's conditional love. If you're gay, they don't accept you. If you're not mormon, they don't accept you. They only help each other. Even their own children will be disowned in many cases if their children admit they no longer wish to be apart of the church.
