- There are bucketloads of Donkey Kong characters at this point. DK, Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong, FUNKY KONG. But, there's one Kong that Nintendo seem to have forgotten in recent years. Today we'll investigate where the character came from, and what happened to them!

In fairness, Nintendo is incredibly inconsistent about this. They've flip-flopped between modern DK being the original (this is usually done in games where he's alongside Mario), being the son of the original (well, I think only Rare has stated this, and only in DK64), or being the grandson of the original.

I remember him being in Mario Tennis for the N64. I loved that game. I never seemed to be able to unlock Donkey Kong Jr. but I remember going into a tournament, and he was one of the opponents. I was like "that ain't diddy, that ain't donkey, who the hell is that"

Diddy Kong was originally going to be DK Jr but Nintendo thought Rare's design was too different so they asked them to change it to look more like his classic design or keep the design as a new character with Rare choosing the latter.

A few missing details:
DK Jr was supposed to be in DKC1, but Rare's redesign was so drastic that Nintendo made them turn this design into a new character, Diddy Kong.
Also, DK Jr. was a Mystery Mushroom costume in Mario Maker 1.
And he stared in a math game for the NES.

Honestly, I'd have preferred they just say Diddy Kong is DK Jr. It's weird that we haven't seen DK Jr in any of the main Donkey Kong games, and now Nintendo are the ones responsible for Diddy becoming more widely known than their own creation. They should retcon it and say Diddy Kong was the one that starred in DK Jr, just like Jumpman is now called Mario. King Koopa is now Bowser, Princess Toadstool now Peach. They've changed names many times, DK Jr can now be Diddy Kong. And he wasn't really DK's son. That was never outright stated within the games anyway, so it's fine.

I thought Nintendo lore was Donkey Kong Jr IS the current Donkey Kong now grown up, and the original Donkey Kong is now Cranky Kong.
Rare flip flopped on it a bunch of times but I believe that Nintendo's current story is that the current DK is the _son_ of DK Jr., and that Cranky Kong/Original DK is the grandfather of current DK. It's all a bit of a confusing mess though, if you ask me haha
Yes, that is indeed correct. The DK Jr. from the 80's is DK from the 90's (and later) and the original DK is Crancy. Play DKC1 again and you'll read it everywhere in Cranky's lines.

The OG DK is Cranky Kong, DKJR is his son and (New)DK is his grandson. And Baby DK from Super Sluggers and Yoshi's Island DS is the (New) DK when he was a baby. And since baby Mario is racing with his future self (Ala Partners in Time), it isn't strange for DKJR to appear in the future to see the races.
According to the Kong family tree, Donkey Kong Jr. is actually Donkey Kong’s father. The original Donkey Kong is Cranky Kong, who is Donkey Kong’s grandfather, thus showing that his father must’ve been Donkey Kong Jr.

Correction, corrections, dodododo: The DK we've had in MK64 onward (technically DKC 1 onward) is actually the DK from Donkey Kong Country and not the OG DK, that DK we have in this modern era is the son of DK Jr, and the grandson of the original DK, who is now: Cranky Kong. So really, DK Jr is rooting for his son after time traveling into the future.

As someone whose favorite part of Nintendo EVER is Donkey Kong Jr. I appreciate your making this video and giving spotlight to my favorite underrated and forgotten character ever so much!
When I found out years ago that DK Jr. was going to be in Double Dash but got replaced, I was absolutely livid initially. I don't have anything against Diddy and I adore him immensely, but finding out that my favorite part of Nintendo's history almost made it into my favorite game of the decade was like a banana slamma to the face.
Also, if I wasn't already subscribed, your coughing over the abominations that are MORE worthless derivatives of Mario and Peach at the beginning of the video definitely would have caused me to subscribe, lol.
DK Jr. being left out by nintendo pisses me off more than any other forgotten Mario character. While characters like waluigi are at least consistent in spin off appearances, characters like birdo and spike are included in the games sparingly but still being used over the years, Pauline and King K Rool finally coming back into relevancy after many years of rarely appearing and characters like Wart and Geno who while it would be cool to see them return were only used once or twice so they're kinda not as close to us as other Mario characters. DK Jr was the only one who was just left out by Nintendo in the rain right after he had gotten his chance like wtf they actually went out of their way to remove him from double dash. And don't give me that DK jr is modern DK so he can't be in the games with him bullshit cause baby characters like baby mario appear alongside their adult counterparts in spin off games all the time. I don't hate Diddy though but he just doesn't cut it for me. He seems too cool and hip whereas DK Jr appears to be a more playful and cute child gorilla

Going through the comments I've had to realise that Donkey Kong has an extensive lore to its games on par with Dark Souls series.
Damn Nintendo... just sneaking this stuff in. First with the Kirby games being super freaking dark... now with extensive Donkey Kong lore.
Diddy Kong didn't just replace DK Jr. in Mario Kart: Double Dash, but in Donkey Kong Country as well.
Diddy was initially meant to just be Rare's redesign for Jr., but Nintendo didn't like how different he looked, and told them they had to either keep the original design, or just make the redesign a new character entirely, to which they did the latter.
The modern-day Donkey Kong introduced in DKC is actually DK Jr.'s son, with the original Donkey Kong from the arcade game now being known as the elderly Cranky Kong.
I think it's pretty simple, the Donkey Kong Country series didn't exist yet when Super Mario Kart was in development and before those games happened Donkey Kong characters never left the arcade and therefore Donkey Kong wasn't part of the main Mario cast yet.
Adding Donkey Kong Jr. to the game was nothing more than a retro throwback in 1992 people probably got about the same feeling back in the day as people got when characters like the Ice Climbers or the Duck Hunt Duo were added to Smash Bros
Maybe it's hard to imagine, but Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. were on the same level during Super Mario Kart's development, and DK Jr. was probably chosen because he was more relevant as his game was newer (and just like Miyamoto stated, it was his 10th anniversary)
Also, DK Jr. was always a playable character, while DK was never a playable character.

It appears to be a bit more complicated. The Donkey Kong we know now, from Donkey Kong Country onwards is actually Donkey Kong the 3rd, as he is the grandson of Cranky Kong, the original Donkey Kong. This means that Junior is actually cheering on his son. There are several theories as to what happened to him. One being that he died, leaving Cranky to raise the modern Donkey Kong. However, it could be that they thought it was too confusing to have Donkey Kong's dad be referred to as Junior. There was a mysterious character called Fedora Kong that was going to be in Country but was left out. Some believe that this is the grown up Junior. I've personally developed my own theory. Look at what he's wearing...a leotard. What if Junior was a gymnast? This would also explain as to why he was home schooled in Donkey Kong Junior Maths. Instead of following in the family business, he got a scholarship to some fancy college with a strong gymnastics program and is now a successful gymnastics coach, perhaps at his old college. This would explain his absence and why DK3 was raised by his grandparents as Junior was busy with his gymnastics career, maybe he even competed at the Olympics or whatever the Kong equivalent might be. This would also explain why his most recent appearances have been sports based. He does love his son, but he was away a lot and his skill set doesn't fit with the family's adventuring.

Interesting video! I always imagined that the Donkey Kong seen in the Rare-games was DK Junior, with Cranky being the Donkey Kong from the original game.
Officially, Original DK (Cranky) is the Father of DK Jr. and the Grandfather of Rare's Modern DK.

I wonder if DK Junior pulled a Turbo like in Wreck it Ralph, and when his arcade machine was getting unplugged he jumped in Mario Kart . And then when he wanted some more action, he jumped into Mario Kart Double Dash, that’s when he realized he wasn’t in the roster so he got a foam cutout of himself, put it in the crowd. Then he reprogrammed himself to look like diddy kong, and ripped apart the og diddy kongs game files and made him a glitch.

This is unconfirmed, but some people suggest that the unused Kong from Donkey Kong Land (aka Fedora Kong) is actually a grown up version of DK Jr.

I know you say "father", but it's probably "son" since the primary depiction of DK now, the one from adventure, is the grandson of arcade game DK.

That theory does not really hold water, as demonstrated in Mario Kart 64. Obviously, the single-coloured back of Donkey Kong was not a hindrance for using him.
On another note, I think that having small Donkey Kong Jr. alongside the modern Donkey Kong in Mario Kart: Double Dash! would have looked pretty jarring, considering that he is modern DK's father.
Here's the thing though. The Original DK from the arcade game is canonically proven to be Cranky Kong in the DKC Series. The DK we play as in DKC and Mario Kart and other Mario spinoffs is Cranky's Grandson.

The OG DK is Cranky Kong, DKJR is his son and (New)DK is his grandson. And Baby DK from Super Sluggers and Yoshi's Island DS is the (New) DK when he was a baby. And since baby Mario is racing with his future self (Ala Partners in Time), it isn't strange for DKJR to appear in the future to see the races
