  • Roller fairleads work just fine with synthetic rope. In fact, I think they work better than the Hawse fairleads in all situations, and for several reasons that I explain.

My Outlander has had a large bottom roller plow fairlead on it since it was a year old when the previous owner put it on with synthetic line. It's still got the same synthetic line from then (2016) but it is about ready to be replaced this year. I think the roller fairleads are better, but I've had a lot of people argue that with me. Oh well... I'm sticking with it! 👍

I believe you are 100% right. I also heard you must use the Hawse with synthetic rope because it gets wedged in places on the roller heads and gets cut.. but I could never see where...or how. And seems like anything under a load being pulled over something rolling -V- dragging across and against a hard surface has to be better. So if I go to synthetic I will not be changing fairleads.

was the fairlead expensive, also was it hard to install?

Super easy to install, and I already had a fairlead kicking around from my previous winch so it cost me nothing.

The roller is far superior to the other for synthetic rope. I don't know who thought a hawse would be better. Too much friction and destroys your rope.
