Great video and great insight into the inner workings of these years MAMAs, thank you! But I can't help but smirk a little at you pointing out the correct korean pronunciation of TWS and immediatly after screwing up Illit's name and pronouncing it in an american way xD, I gotta know if that was intentional and you are just trying to mess a little bit with us haha!
I hope you continue doing these kinds of videos, and the new format is a great fit for these types of videos!

Hahaha, you got me with the Illit pronunciation! I totally messed up. I think I got too used to the American way of saying their name. I gotta go back to saying 아일릿 :)
I think I'll go with this format when coming back from concerts or events like the MAMAs or KCON.

Why are there presenters like Dustin Hoffman and Da'Vine Joy Randolph? Do they have a connection to K-Pop? It would've been better to get presenters like former idols, idols who have a connection to the U.S. (think g.o.d's Joon Park),... basically, any person who is within the K-pop industry. That's just my personal opinion.
Also, love the appreciation for TWS! One of the bright spots of 2024 in K-Pop!

My theory is that K-pop awards shows want to have the prestige of bringing Hollywood stars on them. To Koreans back home, having big Hollywood celebrities gives more credibility that K-pop "made it" in the West. To Americans / Westerners, it shows celebrities they (or their parents) can recognize.
Many presenters have only loose connections to K-pop. For Dustin Hoffman, he explained that he and his wife went to KCON this year and because of that experience, he slowly got introduced more into K-pop. For Lee Isaac Chung, the connection is a bit stronger since he's Korean. Lance Bass was part of NSYNC, so that actually made sense. I'm not sure with Da'Vine Randolph though. And with Anderson .Paak, JYP admired him for a long time.
The problem with many of the presenters, despite their loose connections to K-pop, is that during their speech they talked a lot more about themselves than the K-pop awards they were presenting :(
With all that being said, I do agree with you that the MAMAs should have invited Korean-Americans (or any other overseas Koreans) like G.O.D's Joon Park, to be presenters. Or American celebrities that are K-pop superfans, like Emma Stone.
Oh yeah, TWS is great :)

They are trying to pair western talent of various industry they deem prestigious to attract power broker demographics, like maybe investor types and people in fashion and news , so that Kpop can be cross referenced with the brands that the presents might have access to.
A lot of partner based decision making , what's best for optics , for future advertisers and high rollers

It makes total sense now why VCHA members are saying what they have been and acting the way they have been acting. You can’t mix the lazy self entitled spoiled mindset of Americans with the dedication and superior work ethic, passion and pride along with extreme humbleness of K-POP idols especially within the JYPE NATION. Now, yes, JYP himself said he doesn’t want them to be K-POP bcuz they’re from the U.S. but there is still a great deal of staff that expects the VCHA members to actually work, be truly dedicated and be able to take constructive criticism without throwing a tantrum. Also they should have had American celebrities host MAMA. K-POP Idols deserved better than that.

I'm still waiting to see the full details in the KG lawsuit against JYP USA. I'm concerned if KG's claims are correct that JYP USA broke several child labor laws. If this is the case, then JYP USA is in serious trouble.
However, if KG is exaggerating her claims and it was just her not used to the K-pop work ethic, then that will look quite bad for her in future endeavors. It may also make some K-pop labels more hesitant to create an American-based group if they can't handle the difficult K-pop training.
Again, I do want to wait for a bit more info before picking a side. Right now, based off initial evidence and KG's 77-page lawsuit, she has a strong case, since her claims involve both child labor and normal labor laws. California doesn't mess around with child labor laws, so it's going to take some serious holes in KG's story to absolve JYP USA for any wrongdoings.
      Let's see what happens.

I felt bad for Riize too. I’ve been through a member leaving a group at SM before when Jessica left Snsd and let me tell you; it took a lot of comebacks for the entire fanbase to fully appericate the girls as an 8 piece but then Forever 1 happened and people learned to apperiacte Soshi as they are now. Personally, as a Briize, i don’t know how much longer I can Boycott because I truly do love all seven of them, but the group itself has had one heck of an musical output this year if you take away the Seunghan stuff that deserves praise and the other boys deserve support now more than ever. Maybe SM will come with a decision within the first half of the year while they’re resting[with the exception of SMTown in Seoul}.
Like don’t get me wrong; I want Riize to achieve success globally so badly and I think what SM did to Seunghan was horrible but its on SM to fix the fandom and maybe see where the real fandom is.
Also really happy that you loved TWS’s performance. I did too. 😊

Oh my, I feel for you with SNSD and Jessica leaving. That hurts that SNSD went down to 8 people and it was tough to fully accept them minus Jessica going forward.
As for Riize, it must be tough as a Briize because I saw how the boycotts were affecting the members firsthand at the MAMAs. I'm sure they know the fans disapprove of Seunghan's treatment, but seeing all the boycott and Seunghan signs must be disheartening while the group is performing.
I do think SM kowtowed and bent too much towards the Korean netizens for seemingly minor incidents. These incidents broke no laws, no harmed anyone. SM does need to look towards their international audience a lot more and know these fans will support the label from overseas. The label should just take any heat from the crazed Korean fans and let Seunghan stay in the group.
As for TWS, their performance was a certified banger!

I want your opinion on this: so the LA MAMA show was at a small venue compared to day 2 and day 3. With that being said, did you find the awards / performances fmore ...meaningful in any way? For example, I thought ILLIT's win was pretty emotional but I don't think I would've got that reaction if it was at the big venue. Do you think the MAMA Awards should keep this current setup or would you rather just have it at one big venue?

    • @Popsori
      @Popsori  4 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

I'm thinking that with ILLIT's win, since they were chosen as one of the representatives for the US MAMAs, it was a much bigger deal to win on US soil. Yet, I'm sure the group, regardless if they won in MAMA LA or Japan, them winning an award so early in their career is big.
With the smaller venue for the LA show at the Dolby Theater, I'm thinking that CJ Entertainment wants to test out the audience size, since it was the first time in the West. If they got a huge audience in 2024, they can expand in following years and get a bigger venue.
With the Japan show at the Kyocera Dome, K-pop is already established there and huge in popularity. It made sense for Days 2 and 3 to have a bigger venue than LA with huge stars.
As for if the MAMAs should keep having one of the days in the US (or another Western country), I personally wouldn't mind. I know some people want to keep it within Asia, but I'm thinking CJ Entertainment wants to push the MAMAs outside Asia to further promote K-pop.

I heard at that event, they barely showed Suga in a tribute video, despite him winning a lot of awards. I could be mistaken though.
On the other hand, the MAMAs did honor Suga on the Japan side, but he couldn't make it, of course, due to him still serving in the military.
