Essential factors to be one of Carley's favourite books: feminine humour, be from the 1960s and or 1920s, examine relationships, contain at least one girlboss.
Well Yeh if you want recommendations from a woke racist then cary on. Me though, I like to think for myself. I'm guessing you've never had that pleasure.
Love this list! Here's a lil flex: My good friend Chris is mentioned in the thank you notes in Conversations with Friends and I met Sally at his birthday the week that she got her first publication deal for Conversations with Friends!
I’d recommend “these impossible things”. It came out this month and is about three Muslims women tackling dating, religion, and pleasing family members while on the cusp of graduation from university. It’s amazing and has some great discussions🥰🥰
I read Less because of you, it was my first book from this year and my 2022 favorite so far. Is a wonderful story and the last 100 pages made me so emotional, I cried so much, so thank you for the great Rec!
That’s how I felt when I finished bunny and also the yellow wallpaper I just closed them and wondered how it’s possible to write something so fucking incredible. I read the great Gatsby this week because of your recommendation and was shocked at how much I liked it. It’s been on my shelf for 10+ years. I always viewed it as a book they make high schoolers read so it must be a bit shit but it was great. Zelda girlbossed too close to the sun. I will see F Scott in hell.
The Yellow Wallpaper is genuinely fantastic. I bought it a while ago in an edition that had her other short stories and a novella in it - and while yellow wallpaper is great and Charlotte Perkins Gilman was a feminist and all about women's financial independence, she was also a massive eugenist and her novella is all about that. Really, really soured the yellow wallpaper for me after knowing that while she could write a takedown of the Victorian rest cure, she could advocate some really horrific shit.
@@andrearobyn3701 I’m autistic and just prefer to take classic novels as they are and not look into much about who wrote them. I wasn’t planning on reading other things by her but noted. If I was to avoid every author who had bad opinions that basically would mean I would never be able to read classics or very few.
@@amelialouise9089 That's fair - I only know about Gilman because of the intro to the book and from reading her other work. Though my general rule with classic authors and beliefs they may have held is whether or not it is included in their work. If they're totally isolated from one another I can separate art from artist, but if the work itself is communicating or genuinely advocating for terrible things they thought, I can't separate that. At least for me, makes me feel weird recommending something by them if that's the case. However - I can acknowledge we're all different and some people don't have desire to know anything of an author's life. A *lot* of classic authors were racist, but not all of their works have racism in them. In Herland by Gilman, she full-on supports eugenics and the characters advocate for it - also that since she wasn't a writer of fiction, (Yellow Wallpaper was semiautobiographical but the rest were political or economic piece, as Herland is) I at least can't isolate her work from her beliefs when it's *that* blatant in the text. Not trying to argue with you at all!! Just some thoughts that pop up whenever I think of the story. I'm glad you enjoyed The Great Gatsby so much :)
9:23 when I first read conversations with friends I liked it, I enjoyed it but I didn’t “love it” BUT after I finished it, it has stayed so much with me that I feel like every day I just love it more(?) I just find myself thinking about that book from time to time and being like damn, what a book. Also, even though I surely wouldn’t say the main character is “just like me” I do feel a certain connection to her, like relating to her but not because I think we are the same (even though we have some things in common), and yet I still think she’s a super flawed character in the best way possible. Anyways all this long message just to say that Conversations with friends is such a good book even if I didn’t realize it while first reading it.
By “flawed in the best way possible” I mean that Frances can be a terrible person, plus she’s deeply troubled, but that just makes her a more captivating and compelling character.
Ugh Carley, I truly love you. I look forward to seeing you on my recommended list every time. Your videos and humor are just *chefs kiss* and you are a KWEEN.
I absolutely loved Less and the nuance it brings to the subjects of growing older (as a white gay man) and love. Thanks for sharing the book, as I feel like not a lot of people are talking about how good it is!
Your videos literally got me into reading again and introduced me to Eve Babitz.. which somehow lead me into my hot girl single era. Seriously thank you so much! You are iconic.
Carley you have to read Die, My Love by Ariana Harwicz! It’s an incredibly written (and short) book about a woman suffering from postpartum depression going absolutely feral. The first line is “I lay back in the grass among fallen trees and the sun on my palm felt like a knife I could use to bleed myself dry with one swift cut to the jugular.” - I was hooked immediately. It’s written in such a unique and interesting voice and while I was reading I kept thinking that you would love it so I thought I should recommend it to you!
@Stella I kinda just felt sad reading that little quote. It sounds very descriptive and.... emotional so I probably won't be reading it but it sounds Delightful!

i think you would love one of my favorite books - it’s called Self Help by Lorrie Moore and it’s a collection of short stories. Or Prozac Nation by Elizabeth Wurtzel, it’s a memoir and another one of my favorites of all time !!!!
I found your channel a couple of weeks ago and I'm obsessed!! I could literally listen to you for Hours talking about everything hahaha I'm also crazy about rooney
