- After reacting to and hearing Band-Maid for the very first time ever, I could not wait and HAD to hear more. So 5 minutes after I listened to "Dice", I filmed this reaction and for the first time I'm doing a back-to-back DOUBLE video release. This live performance really showcases these ladies' talent and absolutely stunned me and left me blown away. I included some break downs on their gear and some other fun info on this one, so I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

'WTF IS GOING ON?!?' is the most sensible reaction to this group of hard-rockin' ladies ;0...
I think a large portion of their fan base are musicians, including me. I think they are the most phenomenal band to come out in years. It's not only their excellent musicianship, but their always on point musicality and the melodic contributions by every member to each song. The leads, the bass lines, background vocals and lead vocals and the incredible drumming and even the ones early in their career that they didn't write were incredible. There is nobody else that sounds like them. I was bored as hell with rock until they came along. They are little beasts.
the last time I was excited about a group was in 1972 and it was Yes. Band Maid reignited my interest in music

I was the same way. I haven't heard a good new American rock/metal band in 20 years. I had checked out. It wasn't Band Maid it was another group that starts with a B. But now I'm getting a little bored of them and I have room in my heart for a new band and Band Maid is it. I'm the kind of person who can only be obsessed by one thing at a time and if I'm not obsessed I'm apathetic. Band Maid is so much better than I thought they were from casually listening to Thrill. I have tickets to the Seattle show.

The name of the group and the outfits really throw off a first time listener when they hear the music. It's pretty funny seeing people not expect all of this and then lose their mind over it.
Yeah man these girls kick ass next level, not only do pretty much ALL of their songs SLAP but they are the real deal live, they are not studio magic these girls are freaking legit musicians and seeing 5 Japanese girls in maid outfits carrying the torch of rock and roll better than 99.9% of rock bands out there is such a beautiful thing, I can’t overstate how much I enjoy them

I love how generous this band is, every member is allowed to shine, riff, and show-off a bit in the spotlight, and in every video I've seen of them, they're always just having fun.

I saw a pic of them before I heard them. I was like, "Yeah, the costumes... I don't know". Well, now I know. And these musicians can wear whatever they damn well please.
Two weeks ago I saw them in Detroit at a small venue, crowd of about 700-800 people, small stage - no room for a drum riser , and the vocalist and guitarist almost ran into each other several times, But OMG did they put on a great show. 'Domination' is the first song on their set list. This band has so much depth that they can start with a piece like 'Domination' and sustain the energy over a two hour show. A Great Band!

these girls are crazy in the most positive way. from their live performances u can tell that they are having fun together, love what they do and are sooo f*ing good at doing it.
a little background-story: the band was founded by 'Miku' who plays the rhythm-guitar. she also is responsible for the maid-costumes because she worked at a maid-cafe back then.
'Kanami' kills it with the leadguitar, 'Akane' is an absolute beast on the Drums, 'Misa' is the queen of bass-guitars and 'Saiki' with her great voice (imo) on the mic.
Just adding to the Onset and Freedom live recommendations. Freedom from the same Feb 14th concert - they were on fire 🔥
The vocalist is often overlooked because The musicianship of Band maid is so amazing but you shouldn’t underestimate her, she’s amazing. The song that showcases that the most is Wonderland live. The rhythm guitarist also harmonizes extremely well with her
Yes. Miku-plus-Saiki are a glorious combination. Seems, these days, as much a lead duet as much as lead/backing. Saiki always sets the bar ,but Miku meets it with such panache !!!
Fast forward a year and you're calls for an anime opening comes true. Their new song, Sense, is the opening song for the anime "Platinum End". For those that know anime, the show is written by the same guy who did Death Note.

Don't forget BAND-MAID dropped an MV a couple months ago for their best instrumental yet: FROM NOW ON. As metal as they get but BAND-MAID style. Maybe that will drag you back in.
I've seen all the great bands of the seventies Stones, AC/DC Van, Areosmith, Rush, Yes, Kiss, Zappa etc. Bandmaid it the 1st band in years that brings back that sound and energy live. Daydreaming is my favorite; best guitar solo I've ever felt.

As well as playing in an acoustic band in addition to BandMaid. She is also a DJ 🎚💿 🎧 at various nightclubs.

Dice wasn’t a teaser song!! You just happened to watch it first. The girls have been around for about 8 years now. Go watch some of their back catalogue. “ Thrill “ was the first time most of us heard and loved them!! “ Before Yesterday “ is a gorgeous power ballad.
"Thrill" is an uncomplicated but hella-solid banger in its' own right and deserves a place on any rock playlist, but it feels amateurish when compared to their more-recent compositions, which is a testament to their scope, talent, and progress throughout their careers. They deserve so much more attention than they currently have
Miko didn't know how to play the guitar till she formed this band with Konami and asked her to teach her in 2013. And the drummer, Akane "Gorilla" Hirose is a beast ;) :).
Play close attention to the bass shred part... she switches from picking to slapping by seamlessly tucking the pick under her index finger and then back to picking again...
Brian Setzer from The Stray Cats / Brian Setzer Orchestra does that a lot. Picks like crazy, tucks it in under his index finger and finger picks, then switches back to the pick. Dude is so smooth. Misa does the same and switches it up from picking, to finger picking, to slapping. She's awesome too.
MISA is purely a beast.

Welcome to Band-Maid. Great reaction! This is “Thrill” I recorded it at The Mercury Lounge, NYC. 9/27/19. Minimal production. They are the real deal. This was towards the end of the show. 1 hour and 45 minutes, nonstop.

I've seen hundreds of bands in my 54 years, and Band Maid live sound as tight as any other..they're so crisp and polished on stage.
They have very funny personalities, just like five sisters who like pranks and enjoy themselves.

I saw Band Maid live in Hiroshima in December 2019. They are friggin' incredible live, especially when you're in a crowd that's heavily participating. :-)
2 years later and yes, Band-Maid is still my favorite rock band out there.

When they Gather around Akane, the drummer they're doing something they call "pulling faces" trying to make her lose concentration and mess up, never works, if you watch "Freedom" you'll see Kaname staring at Miku during her vocal and Akane making "kissy faces" at them when they fail once again

Thanks for that info on "pulling faces". Her bandmates should know good (great drummers) are multi-faceted thinkers that's why they can keep a steady beat why playing different rhythms. And, Akane has shown herself to be in the drumming league.

Yeah those are outside of Japan videos. This video is during the Shibuya concert I think, which is one of their biggest concerts.

Lead guitarist Kanami - PRS into Mesa Boogie
Rhythm guitarist Miku - Zemaitis into EVH 5150 (EVH probably recommended by her guitar sensei, Kanami)
And Misa on 5 string bass guitars mostly by Black Cloud, into the Orange amps
Zemaitis asked Kanami and Miku to please come check out their guitars and they did. Kanami was polite, but already decided on PRS (on whose website the list of their illustrious international guitarists, separate from the US list, includes her).
Miku was entranced by the Zemaitis esthetically, and then fell in love with the action being superior to her Rickenbackers (620 and 360). She now has a collection, set up with certain tonal qualities befitting certain songs. And since I am writing this on a reaction from months ago, I am sure you know about her compact V Zemaitis and her signature "Flappy Pigeon" model...
And MISA. Goddess of bass, impression of a ninja assassin in black with her shoes kicked off (to feel Akane's drumbeats better and sharpen her timing). Started the Band-Maid journey with a Fender Jazz Bass 4 string but needed more range as their songs became more demanding. So, learned 5 string and now has at least 3 Black Cloud customs.
I kinda imagine that the dislikes are the people who don't want to admit they like this band

Fun fact, Miku switched to Rhythm Guitar and backup vocals when she realised her voice wasn't what the band needed. When Thrill MV started getting traction she did not know how to play yet. I think this was her first solo, like, ever.
What an honest reaction! It's refreshing. If this happens, you will be beaten up by MISA with "Turn me On", listen to "Fate" and follow Saiki's instructions to jump into the fire.
Akane may be the most versatile and talented drummer in Japan. She can play anything.

As a long time Band-Maid fan, it's fun to go back to the beginning, with Thrill. That's the vid that I think most of us Maidiacs discovered them and see how far they've come. I'm 58, I love metal, but I am absolutely obsessed with these ladies!
I have to plug for "On set" again for the next reaction. In this one, Domination, the guitarists are also pulling faces at the drummer @ 3:54 - trying to put her off and you said she's wailing! And she has the biggest smile while she does it!... Holy F@ckin' yowzer is right!

If "Dice" was an intro to the band, this performance of "Domination" was an intro to their technical skills. They have so much more skill to show, and it's all done in service to the crowd.
The best hard rock band around and probably for the last 30-40 years or so! Try the live version (2020) of their "Freedom" next and you'll hear fantastic bass lines and a little treat from the drummer :) Enjoy the ride!

Hi from the UK. Saw these girls in London and it was the most enjoyable gig I've been to in 40 years. Became an instant fan. Who cares about the language barrier, they transcend it!!!
For other tracks to try, I suggest Real Existence, Puzzle and Moratorium (live is best), but they have a huge back catalogue so enjoy!!!😁
Last year at Islington assembly hall? I was there too, upstairs. Flew from Spain the day prior and run away to Gatwick that same night.

So, take a deep breath, and start discovering them as I did...one by one, none of their songs is skippable, there is not even a single band in the world that can keep up with such quality of song-writing and as you are well aware by now, the musicianship is out of this world...Whatever you do - go with live performances, this band is only worth seeing live. Love your comment, "these girls are Nightwishing me". I actually found Band -Maid as a result of watching Nightwish reactions, and seeing comments on those videos to try Band-Maid. Had a look and listen, never looked back since. Though very, very different from each other, I absolutely love both of these bands.
There is an utterly unfair amount of talent in this band across the board.
Honestly, the tearing up thing is real. They have a couple of songs that are just SO GOOD and SO PERFECT that it makes me emotional. Like in the way beautiful things make you watery eyed. Not every artist can do that tbh.

A little update for ya, Miku now has her own signature Zemaitis guitar. She has also been seen playing their "V" model.

I'm so happy that you reacted to Band Maid. I wish they were heard by millions of people in America on rock stations. They really deserve it! They have rocked Japan for years, I would love to see them as a featured band in concert with opening bands and tens of thousands of people filling in to see them.

They are just as good with no production, I've seen them a few times, and they're simply the best. If you can find them Daydreaming, Anemone live acoustic, and awkward. These songs will help you understand their tremendous songwriting abilities

Live versions of Blooming are available both from the Line Cube Shibuya show, and from the more recent ONLINE OKYU-JI show. But the MV is also good.
It never gets old watching people lose their minds over this band....they are so special...check out 'Choose Me'....'Alone'.....'Real Existence'....'Daydreaming'.....or really anything by these Ladies....whenever possible go for the live version..they absolutely own the stage!!!! Jimmy Page is also a fan. Google Jimmy Page and Akane Hirose. Jimmy went to a Band-Maid concert and was blown away by the band, but especially the drummer and wanted to meet her and have a picture taken with her.

@@TankTheTech Jimmy attended a rock festival in Tokyo in 2016. After Band-Maid's set he sent word to Band-Maid's people that he wanted to meet Akane. The initial response was she thought she was being pranked. She wasn't. They talked in private and we're photographed together. That picture is my screen saver. Later Akane would say "Mr Jimmy Page-San offered me many words of encouragement and I promised him l would do my best to live up to his kind words." That's the extent of it but when you figure he could easily meet any act there the only one he wanted to meet was Akane then that is fairly impressive.

@Zoned 247 Jimmy's current girlfriend is younger than his daughter. He had a groupie in the 70's named Lori Mattix who was 14 years old.
Jimmy Page once said Akane (the drummer) was the reincarnation of John Bonham.
These girls are just at the top of the game.
Freedom will knock you off your feet similar to this song, Wonderland will have you forgetting to breath in how beautiful it is, and Onset is a lot of fun, but Puzzle is their most complex writing to date. There is also an acoustic version of Puzzle that will have you shedding tears. I'm serious.
They're that good that the album Conqueror reached top 10 in itunes.

I had just run across the girls a couple days prior, watched every last official video on their channel multiple times, made my first iTunes purchase EVER (and first money spent on new music in DECADES) when I called up a friend of mine who had played guitar professionally in Japan back in the 90s. "Dude, I just found THE MOST AMAZING Japanese band! and they're all girls! and all dressed up li...." "Oh, you found Band-Maid, here, let me send you a link" ONSET. I swore I had no idea it could get any more amazing than what I had already listened to.
Okay, nice reaction ... there are a few other live songs from this same concert that are MUST SEES, and normally I'd say that you HAVE to stick with live shows with Band-Maid, but there are a few MVs that need to be seen. The one MV I would most recommend is 'Blooming'.
And you have just scratched the surface ... this band is incredible even beyond the just what you saw.
Miku, the girl playing the Zemaitis formed the band. At the time she was a 'failed' idol singer but still had an idea for a band who played hard rock and wore Maid outfits. She contacted the lead guitarist who was doing TH-cam video covers at the time, who knew the Drummer, who knew the Bassist. And they formed a band. Miku realized she didn't have the rock voice to pull off the lead vocals so they interviewed for a singer ... and that's basically how the band was formed.
Miku does most of the lyric writing, and while us non-Japanese probably don't appreciate it, she is considred quiet the poet in Japan, and on top of that she writes in a special style (the Japanese language uses very short syllables, almost always ending in a vowel sound, but there is a witing style which is supposedly very hard to write in and very hard to sing, that adjusts the way the words are sung to make them flow better .. I don't pretend to understand it, but suffice it to say that Miku is great at writing that style and her and Siaki (the lead singer) are great at singing that style.
Kanami, the lead guitarist does most of the music writing and arrangments, and as you have heard and probably appreciate by now she is a goddess of riffs and fills, and her leads are always the most tasteful ... she doesn't just shred, she writes her solos to be remembered.
Then there are the Bass (MISA, MISA, MISA) and Drums (Kanami) ... there are few rhythm sections that can hold together a song better than these two (no, I take that back, there are not 'few', there are NONE.) and to top it off they both kill it on their solos.
Kanami, MISA, and Akane are all multi-instrumentalists and musically schooled (Miku didn't even play guitar when she joined, but Kanami is her teacher and every once in awhile Miku will do some nice fills and riffs of her own.)
Unlike most bands, Band-Maid doesn't really have a 'frontman' ... Miku does a lot of the 'small talk' during the shows, but they are not like most bands where there are one or two main members and the rest sort of stiin the background .. all of the girls here have their onstage and off-stage personas, and they give their fans something to keep them interested above and beyond the music.
The band itself also has an 'alter-ego' called 'Band_Maiko' ... every year on April 1 (pandemics notwithstanding) they dress up in Maiko (Geisha in training) uniforms, add some traditional Japanese instruments sounds to the mix and release a special ear & eye candy music video for their fans .. they've also release a mini-album where 'Band-Maiko' does 'covers' of some 'Band-Maid' songs.
Anyway, Band-Maid is such a treat ... have a great journey because they have over 90 songs in their catalog and all of them are awesome.

Everyone has pretty much given their recommendation of Band Maid songs and anyone of those are pretty good. But if you wanna see the girls during their rookie days, then you might wanna check out "Thrill", this was their first music video released on TH-cam and the first one that introduced me to the band when I first saw it 6 years ago. You could already see their potential in that video. The song was written for them by their label and they were still finding their own voice. Miku the rhythm guitarist was just learning to play the guitar then, but the drummer, bassist and lead guitars were already solid even back then.
I remember seeing these guys in 2016 on a tiny outdoor stage at MCM expo in the UK. They had to do their own setup and had a tiny crowd that steadily grew. I can confirm they sound great with almost no production added as they had hardly any that day! My husband and I were all: Why the hell are these ladies not touring properly they're so much better than this little side stage. Lo and behold four years later and now they're touring for real!

Hi, welcome to the world of BAND MAID, I'm a rock guitarist and honestly I haven't heard such a band for a long time, "Misa" Bass Player WOW, Kanami guitar leader absolutely brilliant never trivial and very very creative "the riff machine"..... Akane fantastic drummer, Miku second guitarist and Saiky wow perfect voice for this band..... Oh, maybe rear to, or just check out for your own amusement, but as a roadie, you might appreciate a 3rd party video called Band-Maid Hit by Accident. It’s a compilation of little on stage mishaps from rig fails, to bumping each other on tiny stages. But also seeing them work through them.
You brought up a great point about, "would I like this band without the stage productions, its just them and their guitars/amps". When the maids tour outside Japan that is exactly what they do. It's just the maids and their gear. No frills, no stage lasers. I saw them three times this way, San Fran at the Chapel, and twice at the Echoplex in LA. Those were three of the best live shows I've ever seen. Fricken unbelievable. I also appreciate your info on the gear, I know nothing about that stuff so its cool to learn about it, thanks! Subbed!!
I think it's fitting that the next one should be "Thrill" since that was the song that introduced many of us to them years ago. It's also the song that saved the band because prior to that they had thoughts of disbanding.
Unbeknownst to them, "Trill" was uploaded onto Facebook and it shot up in views overnight. That's when Band-Maid knew they had a lot of fans overseas and it motivated them. Even now on TH-cam you can see that most of the comments are in English and you'll rarely see Japanese ones.
There is something special that certain bands have and you know it when you first hear them. Van Halen, Guns and Roses, Metallica, Pantera (with Phil), Iron Maiden, etc. brought new life to the music world. I think this band has it. You also might want to check out a band called Lovebites if you haven't yet.
