    Thanks for doing this one! Yes, a lot of Japanese artists mix Japanese and English lyrics. Miku, the rhythm guitarist and lyricist is especially good at combining the two within single phrases and also truncating the pronunciations of words to fit the melody while communicating exactly what she intends to communicate in the lyrics.
    If they ever do another double like this that I’d like for you to react to I’ll make sure to do separate donations.

    I can't believe that you have only done two reactions to Band Maid, with this being the third. There is SOOOOOOO much more to delve into. If you like instrumentals, they do a bang-up job with them. My two favorites are the official live video of "Onset" and the music video for "From Now On". I know that you will a great job in breaking down what is going on. To me, they are masterpieces of technical precision performed with very high grade musicianship.
    From what I have read, Kanami (lead guitarist & genius-level composer) came to Akane (the High Priestess of the Temple of the Perfect Fill, lol) and asked her what her top bpm is. Akane said 190 bpm, so Kanami said I'm writing a song at 220 bpm, deal with it. And that became Black Hole.

  • @Kevin6059
    @Kevin6059 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    It blows my mind when Akane is accenting off-beats in parts of Black Hole. I mean, the song is so complex as it is you'd think she'd just keep hammering the downbeat to keep everyone in sync, but hey - this is Band-Maid we're talking about here!

  • @lewissmith4123
    @lewissmith4123 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Great to see you back with a Band Maid reaction. The requester would have wanted you to listen to Black Hole for the 220 bpm. The video was only released as a 2 fo,r so that was the only way they could get it to you. When Akane was presented with the concept and speed for the song by Kanami she came up with 7 different drum patterns for the song ranging from Easy to Hell, the band, of course, chose Hell !!

    Well, considering the fact that MISA is just a bit over 5'8", yes, that bass is huge. And yes, that is amazingly tall for a Japanese woman. Akane is 5'6"...Saiki is 5'4"...and the two tiny guitar dynamos are Kanami 5'1" and Miku 5'.

      @@AndrewRooneyDrums And that is actually what Akane said in an interview. Kanami asked her what her speed was and Akane said 180-200. Kanami then e-mailed her a demo and said well I wrote this for 220. And Akane went through the demo and wrote 7 different drum patterns From Rhythm and Drums Magazine 01-2021 issue;
      -i-
      - I see. I’m impressed with your explosive drumming in BLACK HOLE with a speedy, mainly two-beat, overwhelming development. It must be a very challenging song for a drummer.
      Akane: It has 220 BPM, which is the fastest Band-Maid song ever. It was the most challenging song, and the most memorable one at the recording. When I proposed foot phrases to my bandmates, I prepared about 7 patterns according to difficulty levels, like easy / normal / possible if I try / demonic / hell, and all of them chose the “hell” pattern (laughs).
      - (laughs) At any rate, I feel your strictness with yourself in that you prepared the “hell” level yourself.
      Akane: I’ve been trained by my bandmates who are strict with themselves, so I proposed it myself (laughs). I feel my growth, and my spirit of taking on challenges has become even stronger. All of them have been making their own parts harder and harder, so I wanted to give myself a challenge… so I have a sense of accomplishment, like “I didn’t run away”. I think it’s great we inspire each other like that.
      -i-
      That I think is one of the things that set Band-Maid apart from most other bands. Their constant striking for improving themselves.

    The switch between Japanese and English isn't unique to Band-Maid, but Miku (who writes most of the lyrics) often uses it to facilitate the rhythm. In many situations, English phases have fewer sylables than their Japanese equivalents, so she sprinkles in English to preserve the flow. Other times, a particularly dense Japanese verse fits the song well, with Saiki bringing a rap-like delivery.

  • @geoffb5
    @geoffb5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The reason this is two songs is that it and another video, Dice/Different, were done for a lockdown era Japanese government program which encouraged video releases but they had to be at least 5 minutes, IIRC, in length.

  • @MaartenT
    @MaartenT ปีที่แล้ว +19

    There are basically 3 different ways the Japanese tackle their vocals in their rock or metal songs, but the mix of English and Japanese is done by a lot of bands. The others either have pure Japanese or pure English vocals. I believe Band-Maid's lyricist and backing vocals/rhythm guitarist Miku uses English or Japanese depending on what fits best with the music for that specific part of the song because both languages have different sounds and cadences.

      I believe their latest single Bestie is all in English.
      Even in normal spoken conversation, Japanese people use quite a lot of English loan words.

    • @MaartenT
      @MaartenT 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@donaldgraham6414
      It is, they have 3 tracks that are in full English as far as I'm aware and Bestie is one of them. But it was also a collab with Mike Eizinger of Incubus, which is probably why Miku made all the lyrics in English. The other 2 tracks that are in full English are "Don't let me down", which was written by a Japanese male producer and feature lyrics (by that producer) that make some reactors blush (it's not even known if they knew what they were singing at the time) and "The Dragon Cries" which was a collab with Tony Visconti, which again is probably why they are all in English since Tony Visconti produced the vocals on that track.
      And yes, I have learned and listened to enough Japanese to know how many English loanwords they use, sometimes with completely different meanings ("mansion" or "sense" come to mind), but I still prefer a mix (no issues with that) or full Japanese lyrics for most Japanese music myself. But to be fair, it also depends on the vocalist and the pronunciation, I am looking at you Kimi from Bridear. I have a tough time ignoring her pronunciation and I am not even a native English speaker. Let's put it this way, if you can't even tell on first listen they are singing in English they probably shouldn't do full lyrics in English (but I guess that's a subjective take, not an objective one). It's not going to stop me from listening to the band, but bands that do this are probably not going to be my favourites either because the vocal lines will distract me from listening to the actual music. I am looking forward to Bridears upcoming album though, so there is that.

    You need to track down one of their Tutorial Videos. It's just them playing in a white studio and there's 5 videos per song. One of each instrument and then one of it edited all together. The reason I say this is you could just do the Drum Video. It may take some looking but they're out there. A couple other songs in the same vein are 'Different' and 'Rinne'.

    • @MaartenT
      @MaartenT ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think those are meant as tutorial videos, they are just extras that come with the special editions of some of their albums.
      The Conqueror limited edition DVD/Blu-ray editions (white room) came with:
      - Domination (Instrumental Video)
      - Dice (Instrumental Video)
      - Onset (Instrumental Video)
      Unseen World limited edition DVD/Blu-ray editions (white room):
      - After Life (Instrumental Video)
      - No God (Instrumental Video)
      - Giovanni (Instrumental Video)
      - Without Holding Back (Instrumental Video)
      Unleash limited edition DVD/Blu-ray editions (white room):
      - Unleash!!!!! (Instrumental Music Video)
      - Sense (Instrumental Music Video)
      - From Now On (MV - black room) (this one doesn't have different versions as far as I remember)
      All of these have different versions with the exception of the From Now On MV, one with all 4 of them and one for each member. They certainly aren't officially on yt, they might be around, I have no clue.

    That drum kick that opened the song was just great and Misa just blended right in. Akane's fills are a work of art and a wonder to hear. I get a kick out listening for her fills and just ignore the rest, just to see if I can predict what she is going to do next. No luck so far, lol. I know her nickname is Gorilla, but to me she is the High Priestess of the Temple of the Perfect Fill !!!! She is just so creative that it's mind-boggling. I've done some side-by-side video comparisons of Akane and both Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich and she seems to have the same type of creativity those legends had. Glad to see you doing another Band Maid.
    Another thing I like about "Manners" is that at their lives shows, when they play this song, the whole crowd joins Miku in her little "ha-ha-ha-ha" interludes as well as her "yeah yeah yeah yeah" scream. Keep up the good work Andrew !!!
    PS: Have you reacted to "Onset"(live official video) or "From Now On" (music video) ??? They are real bangers.

    In the acoustic version of Sayonakidori, Akane does backing vocals for Miku as well as playing the drums with special soft sticks. They are joined only by Misa. No Kanami or Saiki. It is a beautiful work of art.
    Sayinakidori means “nightingale,” but also “the bird that cries at night.”

    • @MaartenT

      You are missing
      - Senri Kawaguchi: Ranked top 500 drummer on drummerworld when she was 13 and only beaten later by Yoyoka as the youngest drummer on that list. Senri has solo stuff, Kiyo*Sen, The Jazz Avengers and a LOT of freelance recordings for other artists. She just had the 10th anniversary of her first solo album and she is only 26.
      - Kanade Sato: Just turned 20, but she is an amazing drummer. Kanade Sato is in the Fusion groups "Muses" (with bassist Juna Serita among others who played with Tamu in the past as well) and "Ear Candy Jazz Factory", plays with Rie a.k.a. Suzaku, has solo stuff on youtube and recently played live with Koiai (new name for the old Li-Sa-X band).
      I would place both of them higher than the majority (if not all) of that list as far as favourite drummers go (I don't like to use the word "best"). Don't get me wrong, all of them are very good drummers and I like all of them a lot, but Senri has been my favourite Japanese drummer (and one of my favourite drummers period) and Kanade Sato is fantastic as well. It's just because they are more in the Jazz and Fusion realm that you probably never heard of them.
      Go check them out, they are well worth it (Andrew has reactions to both of them on his channel).

    Awesome. An overhead Akane-Cam would have been nice but you can't have everything in life...the ears are more than happy :-) Bass and drums are always the ultimate unit with the Maids. MISA works hard in manners...soloing at the same time as the guitar...a low-key regular maid Rock feature.

    Black Hole isn't one of my favourite songs, but it is also one of my absolutely favourite songs! It is confusing, chaotic and unfocused. They've thrown every single idea they came up with for the song in together and don't seem to have edited at all writing it. In this song it is absolutely perfect to do that. To me this is the most conceptual song of theirs and honestly more than a lot of more conceptual bands manages to do. The song really is wall of unstoppable energy as chaotic and overwhelming as I imagine a black hole to be. I guess I imagine a getting sucked in to a black hole would be as much of getting sucked in to a comic book tornado.

    It's quite normal for Japanese songs to have English mixed in with the lyrics, but I was surprised that people overseas used to take it negatively, but recently it's been taken positively.
    When composing music, using other languages to express sounds and meanings as much as possible is also done in classical works such as "haiku, senryu" other than music, and it is very natural for Japanese.

    Hi, Andrew, and greetings from across the Ditch in Aus!
    Thanks for getting back to Band-Maid, always nice to see them get some appreciation. They're touring the US again shortly, and I can only hope that they'll do an Australasian tour eventually.
    I'm not sure if they've been suggested previously, but another all female Japanese band you might appreciate is Lovebites. They have a powerhouse drummer, Haruna, known as the Pocket Nuke ( she's 4'9"). Their genre is metal, ranging from thrash, to speed metal, to.... well they have practically established their own genre. What other metal concert will give you a Chopin piano etude? Lovebites do! One of their two amazing lead guitarists is a classically trained pianist. But back to Haruna, she can keep up a blistering pace on the double kick for a 2 hour concert and not raise a sweat. She is also a friend of Akane from Band-Maid.
    There's plenty of tracks to choose from, this is one of their heavier numbers which showcases the drummer. Cheers.

    BAND-MAID sound is is 99% BASS! To be completely honest, I don't think this is a live stream. Sounds and looks like songs are comped from multiple live performance and touched up here and there. I've seen plenty of live show footage of them and the rock live but this sounds to clean for a live stream.

    • @philproffitt8363
      @philproffitt8363 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bass is only stronger in the live setting...studio recordings favour more detail in the guitar layering and everything else. Dice or Blooming MVs are good examples. I enjoy the two different presentation styles. I didn't see this original live stream but others I've watched and recorded were really very good.

    • @thomasrotweiler
      @thomasrotweiler ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can compare with the live stream which someone has posted on a certain Chinese site. From what I can tell, the sound was recorded onto the mixing desk and some balancing done post-production. Possibly some vocal tweaks. The official live video with manners uses a different selection of camera angles in places, partly to edit out Akane goofing off at the camera. Other bits are as per the original live stream. I think some bits of the drumming have been tidied up as well. I didn't spot any obvious signs of multiple performances though - no continuity errors, invisible cameras etc.
