Hi Tank, you have to watch Band Maid newest video: "WARNING!"

  • @Dtagcity

This MV has the potential to blow up as it has just the right mix of undeniable groove, catchiness, well crafted MV, easy to understand lyrics and all the usual intricacies of the BM sound, without being as complex/aggressive like their core stuff which might be too much for casual mainstream audiences. Kanami’s maturity as a songwriter is evident here.
Even the English lyrics though still rough, is comparatively better than all of their previous ones. It feels more aligned, there’s less inconsistencies and the wordplay with their previous releases are a nice touch. Miku did a stellar job here.
At their current point, I honestly can’t think of a better way to appeal to the masses, without having to compromise who they are and what their music is about.
I truly hope this gets the exposure it deserves.
Everything about this is screaming “This is who We are, This is our Best, This is our Rock!”
Having known them for a while now, when I watched this for the first time it felt so gratifying that I almost teared up.
This is special, not just as an ode to their beginnings but also a declaration of their determination to keep doing what they do best in the years to come.

This song, along with their 80's style power ballad "Daydreaming" is definitely commercial radio viable in the West. Would love to see them get even more traction over here. Commercial success in the West is very difficult with the language barrier. But Kpop group BTS has shown that it is possible, but even they have moved towards using much more English in their songs, with their last single "Dynamite" being a full English song. Maybe a full English song for the soundtrack to a movie might do the trick.

End the polls. I have already found the album of the year : Unseen World by Band-Maid. This song doesn't represent the overall sound of the album that is very hard/prog rock with elements of metal and grunge as well. But as Tank said; this is not a copy and paste. They embraced all those different genres and made their own... After all it is a brand new genre : the Band-Maid one.

Nice video as always Tank! 🤘🏻
I would appreciate if you could check out BAND-MAID's song "flying high" from their previous album "CONQUEROR". There is no official video for the song but someone uploaded the audio on TH-cam. Or you can react to the audio from other streaming services.
"flying high" has the same classical hard-rock groove vibes as "Manners" or even as "The Dragon Cries" also from "CONQUEROR".
For the fans, "Manners" is not a new sound from BAND-MAID because they've already did it in the past albums but this time, the production sound and especially the vocals on "Unseen World" are way better.
On a final note, IMO "flying high" is BAND-MAID's finest hard-rock song and it's also the song that have the shape of Miku's screams to come 🐦🎤🎸 "yeah yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah, YEAH YEAH!!"

I watched a vid with Miku playing/talking about her various Zimitis Guitars she has (9 IIRC). She called the "V" body her "shred" guitar. If you noticed, she did the "Pick Slides", and actually had a few lead riffs/licks/fills in this song. She said in the vid, that she prefers the "Les Paul" body, that she normally plays, as it has a best "Band Maid" sound/tone to her.

"about her various Zimitis Guitars she has (9 IIRC). " GODDAMN NINE!? o.O Good for our girl clearly she's been making some serious coin for sure. Bassist here btw afaik this side here in Asia (I'm not Japanese but my MIJ Fender P-Bass was shipped from there so) if you gotta import in a Zemaitis especially to her in Japan sure as shit ain't gonna be cheap. I'm talking about her earlier ones maybe. And that MFGV22 of hers retails for $3.3K (minus shipping), $3,758.56 on Amazon Japan (example) AND I'd imagine as an endorser hers should be an even better (pricier) ver spec-wise no doubt. Unless a Zemaitis rep can come in here to add a few.

I just rewatched that vid with Miku and her guitars, she says she has 11 guitars, not nine. She counts them off, I think six displayed with her, a couple other ones not there on the set, and two travel guitars, plus her first guitar which was a Rickenbacker 620.

There is something still distinctly "Japanese" about most Japanese rock bands. I don't know what it is, I'm not musically literate, but it's the scales they prefer, or the chord progression, or some other playing or writing style that I hear in most Japanese bands that I recognize as "Japanese" even without the lyrics. This band seems to have made a very conscious decision to sound like Western rock, and specifically 70s and 80s rock, but they still sound modern even with that obvious influence. I hear other bands that try to capture that sound, but they never do it for me; they come off sounding like parodies of classic rock to me. Most rock acts today can be classified as "post" something, or "new" something, or some other sideroad that branches off of rock music. And I like a lot of that stuff. But those acts, while still on a good road, have travelled a long way from the Rock and Roll Main Street. This band is still square in that lane. It's a little more modern, but it is purely, distinctly, almost definitively rock music, no modifiers or disclaimers necessary. And I think why they appeal to a certain demographic, namely the people who remember that rock music when it was just rock music.

If you're looking for one of Band-Maid's harder tracks. RINNE, pronounced "reen-EY" (I believe Japanese for Reincarnation) is what you're looking for. Word of warning: Normally, Live is always the best way to go with Band-Maid. But I'd watch the official music video if you're going the TH-cam route. The only live performance I can find is a shortened version on some kind of late night talk show. The Band tried. But you know how that kind of performance can get... stunted.

The MV is (literally) on fire; the live from last February's online concert is a true showcase of their live playing. Cool reaction, I like your breakdown of their gear. I just have one bone to pick about the info given about the difference between a guitar with 22 or 24 frets. The number of frets has nothing to do with the scale of the guitar. The scale is the distance from the saddle on the bridge to the nut. The Custom 22 and Custom 24 both have a 25 inch (PRS standard scale). (Also as a side note I must applaud you for posting the pic of the 513 as an example of a 22 fret neck guitar.) The difference is that the 24 fret neck fretboard goes further into the body which changes where the neck pickup is placed. Now it is true that the range of the guitar is longer because it gives the player two more notes per string. But range and scale are not interchangeable.
I know only a guitar nerd like myself would only pick up on that (no pun intended), but you strike me as one who not only enjoys music, but also appreciates accurate information.

Miku has progressed alot on guitar. Kanami just shreds on this album. Chemical Reaction on this album is a banger. Kanami said she uses second channel, third channels. I posted a pic on discord of Kanamis pedal board.
Moratorium you might like, the crowd interactions are great. Seikei just works the crowd. Puzzle, is great, so many guitar riffs in it. Other bands could make many songs out of. Blooming is so good. Kanami has beautiful solo in it and a long outro solo, and a beautiful transition, with great harmonies from Seikeand Miku. For me I love Band Maid, their in my favorite bands of all time. Nemophila, another Japanese all female band, I also love. They trend harder. Singer Mayu so good, and does screams. Raikei is a great song to start with. Like BM, they just have a sound i love, and they smile, and seem to love playing together like BM. Rolling Quartz from Korea is a female band im liking now. They also have a great sound, and have their own style/image. Like you, some of the other bands i like, and their all very talented, but I just dont get into them.
The Dragon cries, is another BM song , where Seikei sings in Englishand and i . Very Led Zepplinish. Manners is kinda based off of dragon cries. The video produced in NYC, Tony Visconti worked on it.But it's said Manners is based off The dragon cries.

Hey Tank, maybe try their song The Dragon Cries. It has a cool very classic, I think, groove to the music and its one of their rare songs sung totally in English. Think you may like it. :-)

I think this song is B-M saying goodbye to their old style. The rest of the album strays away from the old school hard rock into uncharted theritory. "Chemical Reaction" from the new album will get you headbanging so hard you never find that cap again! It even has a cowbell!!

Great review. I agree with you about the feel of the old style rock. I grew up in the 60's and 70's, as a teenager, and that music has huge influences on me.
In regards to people flaming you about accents as such, they are just being ridiculous. Saiki's English vocals sound different than other Japanese vocalists because of her particular Japanese dialect. There is no one single Japanese dialect. Depending on which one makes it either easier or more difficult to pronounce certain words.
Anyway, keep on rockin' and reviewing.

I try not to read or hear any spoilers from BM new album. I prefer receiving the physical album first and listen to it and then after I will consider looking for the same album on Spotify. I think releasing it digitally would spoil the excitement for the ones waiting for their CD.
but nevermind me, that is just me talking and thinking. You should listen to Band-Maiko - secret MAIKO lips.
This band, maybe you already guessed it, is an alter ego band from Band-Maid :P

Misa has her Glenn Hughes head on with this one doesn't she? It's a great feel and a lovely little jazz outro!

  • @daveminers3404

My humble opinion, of course, but a few exceptional BM songs you really need to hear: "YOLO", my personal favorite, "Alone", for Kanami's best solo(?), "Blooming", another masterpiece, and "Daydreaming", which is becoming one of my favorites too. Everyone reacts to the live videos, and for good reason, but I feel these four MV's should get more reactions.
Although I'm not a musician I enjoy your equipment breakdowns. You're up there with my favorites, Chase and Champ. Great work Tank.

Bruh... They call Misa the Barefoot Assassin -- but in reality it is Miku and Kanami who are the real assassins. Miku with her lyrics and Kanami with her composition! Akane is the tank, Misa is the off-tank, Miku and Kanami are the DPS. Saiki heals.
About that argument about the Japanese band that you did not love because they're singing in English and the accent is throwing you off?
    NOPE!
I agree with you, one-hundred! BAND-MAID has songs in English and those songs are f@#%ing awesome. To me, a lot of talented bands, regardless of language, are lacking composition. It is like having a home chef and a master chef using the same ingredients to make a dish. The difference here is that BAND-MAID is a master chef who will use less and make it look like they used the entire pantry to make the dish.

What a contrast to Different, it's practically down-tempo in comparison and they kill it with this beat, too. I can't put my finger on it, but something about it gives me Deep Purple vibes. Maybe Misa's bass runs? It doesn't sound like she's doing too much differently than her usual (fantastic) playing, but maybe combined with the slower beat? idk but yeah it definitely hits those classic rock points while still being uniquely Band-Maid.
