    This is about living with Tibetan Mastiffs. Kathryn and her husband Brad live on Colorado's front range with 14 Alpacas and eleven TIbetan Mastiffs.
    The Tibetans bred two types of this kind: the Do-Khyi and Tsang-Khyi which is a larger dog than the Do-Khyi. The Do-Khyi are dogs for guarding flocks of sheep of the Tibetan nomadic shepherds or villagers. The Tsang-Khyi, on the other hand, serves as guardians though in this they protect the Buddhist monks or lamas of Tibet.

    My sister in law law has 4 TMs. They are the most loving dogs. They are house dogs and she shows them. They are also certified in Therapy. They go see the kids at the hospital and they go to retirement/ nursing homes. They don't live in kennels nor have they ever been crated. They are great with little ones. And they adore other dogs.

    Excellent video. I have had Tibetan Mastiffs for 12 years now. Thos lady is pretty much spot on.
    Funny how such a fierce dog can also be extremely gentle. My oldest who passed away in May would attack an adult stranger, but yet with children and livestock be loving and gentle. They are extremely intelligent. Nessie learned birds of prey were bad and would growl and bark at them. The funny thing is, hawks , eagles etc.. would then leave the area. Same with coyotes and cougars. Nobody trespassed on the property. They live to protect their family and they do not have fear. Nessie used to growl at thunder and accept a challenge of war.
    They have taken a place in my heart that is difficult to explain.

    Nothing to do with the dogs (which are awesome) but I loved seeing her husband being able to get around the farm in his chair. I’m now a wheelchair user, and I grew up going to a lot of farms and spending a lot of time with animals, but I know that now it would be almost impossible to get around. It looks like they’ve made some changes to make it wheelchair accessible and I think that’s so cool. I need a video on just that 😂

      The big lion like ones which you see in Google are not real Tibetan mastiff, they're mix of chow chow like dogs and some other fluffy dogs mixed with Tibetan mastiffs and have more and more health problems, created artificially for aesthetic purpose. But Tibetan mastiffs show in this video are the real ones. Origin of Tibetan mastiffs is shared by India(mostly), Nepal, china. There are four variants of Himalayan mastiffs in india (1.Himalayan mastiff or Tibetan mastiffs,2.gaddi kutta,3.bhakarwal dog, 4.bhotia dog ) . Orginally it's called Himalayan mastiffs (Indian native breed) and later on it moved to Tibet, and hence the name Tibetan mastiff .

    Do they love (bond) with both of you? Could we hear their bark???
    I'm very weak so I could probably never make this breed happy. They look at you with a kind of adoration... very cute to see. I also see you're so gentle with them. I've learned how to introduce myself to different animals over the years. My son, remarkably, seemed to know instinctively growing up, no one taught him.
    Had hoped he'd be a vet but he didn't have the necessary detachment when needed... just like his mom.
    Your knowledge of these beautiful creatures is touching.

    Liked your very important statement. Just because you had a good interaction yesterday with the dog, today they might not like you, so you never take them for granted. This is the very reason I could never have one. I have Bull, Neo's and French Mastiffs that are of the same size range but tend to be more predictable & be family oriented, and less independent ( but not by much with the Neo's ) All the super heavy weights Danes, St Benard's, Mastiffs ect , are just a different caliber of dog to be treated with respect. However, the Tibetans are in a class with the Russian causation mountain dogs in my opinion, highly aggressive able to bring down mountain lions. I would agree, having any 120+ pound dog inside your house for personal protection is a wonderful thing ! You don't just feel safe, you ARE safe !

      The Tibetan Mastiffs originate from China and central Asia. They are misnamed as being "Tibetan" - a name given to them in the mid 1800s by the Uk Kennel Club. There are a number of these dogs which vary a little according to the geographical location they are from and of course they have different names eg. in Mongolia the are known as the Bangkhar. Some crapulous people have tried to make money by breeding hybrid dogs but these hybrids are not Tibetan Mastiffs. They are hybrids.

      Tibetan Mastiff breed has been around for 3,000 years ... we know this from drawings. The name "Tibetan Mastiff" was first made in the UK breed club in the late 1800s. Before that the breed was known as another name. Which name do you think it was? And which country?

    • @hilario6128
      @hilario6128 5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      swank0matic, I know. But it was the Chinese that ruined the breed. The dogs in this video are working, functional dogs. The TM in China, or in most of the show rings, are huge, hairy things that could not move fast even if there was a fire. They have massive wrinkles in the head, a mane impossible to maintain in harsh conditions and they are now being abandoned by the thousands (not kidding) because they are not fashionable anymore.

    • @lynpeel6308
      @lynpeel6308 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I wouldn't only blame the Chinese .. the west has done its share of breeding TMs with other breeds ... and with breeding dogs with severe hip or elbow dysplacia who are too sick to stand. It's just that with the Chinese whilst there was what appeared to be an opportunity to make money from the breed, the crappy people had no sense of shame or understanding of what they were doing and so we see more photos of horrendous disfigured dogs. In the West there is more knowledge and just a little more shame but far less photos.

    The dogs are absolutely gorgeous. Such sweet faces. I am very used to German Shepherd Dogs.
    How does the Tibetan Mastiff compare?
    Can they live in the city?

    Where can we make suggestions on future videos of a certain breed we would like to see? Thanks

    Hi. It's so interesting learning about this breed. How can you protect your herd against the coyotes at night if you have to lock the dogs up? Must be frustrating since you, the farmers, were there first.

    Is that something common in giant breeds... feeding adult dog food from the get go to slow the growth process?

    I thought these dogs had huge lion like manes. Or is that just owners letting the hair grow or is it just long haired version like a long haired st. Bernard?

      They are loving to their family, but to strangers , and predators they show their war dog side. They can and will RIP a man apart.

    Yo she has some really good dogs. I could tell that her alpaca story still hurts to talk about. It sucks losing an animal.
