"What is your only comfort in life and in death?” For centuries, believers have learned the Christian faith beginning with that question. It’s the first article in the Heidelberg Catechism of 1563. Why start there? Because death is our common fate. Unless Jesus returns first, we will all die. To find comfort in life, we must know how we can face death. Hope comes only in trusting the one who died to take the curse of death and who crushed the power of death by his resurrection. “Christ has been raised from the dead” (1 Cor 15:20). That is the only statement that can transform how we live each day and how we prepare for our earthly life to end.
The hope of the resurrection spurs us to sing. That’s why a group of songwriters from Getty Music wrote the modern hymn “Christ Our Hope in Life and Death.” Like the Heidelberg Catechism that inspired it, this song is honest about death. There is no need to shrink back from mentioning death in our hymns, because we know the Living One who has conquered death forever. The Christian can sing hallelujah, because Christ assures us of our glorious future. Now and ever, we confess: “I am not my own, but belong-body and soul in life and in death-to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ.”

My precious husband went to be with the Lord 2 weeks ago. I asked my granddaughter and husband to sing this song at the funeral. It was such a comfort to me. I know he is with the Lord!!

As I look at the world, my heart tells me that the time is short until we meet the Lord in the air, and we will be reunited with those we love who have gone to heaven before us. God is good...all the time.

I played this song at my sweet mom's funeral too. Such rich theology in this song. So much truth. I still can't listen to this without crying. I wouldn't wish her back earth side, but the grief is still so raw 2.5 years later.
I close my eyes and envision those gone before us worshipping at the throne of Jesus. Makes my heart burst with emotions while my eyes leak.
I first heard this song with my husband during the lockdown, he was dying from cancer. We were encouraged - he to die, to enter the presence of the Lord,and me to go on with the Lord in this life. Christ is indeed our only hope in life and death.

I played this song at my mom's funeral. We buried her on good Friday of this year. Christ is our only hope in life in death. This song is a balm to my grieving heart. I can only imagine how joyful my mother is singing at the feet of Jesus now. I wanted everyone at her service to know that while grieve we have so much hope in Christ. I listen to it daily, and am reminding of our everlasting hope.🙏❤❤❤

Yes, Christ is the only hope in anything!!!! There is no hope in this life without Him!!! in this life without Him people have no hope---just look around--killings--sexuality problems--hatred and on and on!!! And when death comes---how terrible!! I am a RN and there is a difference when a Christian passes and when an unsaved person passes---you feel it in the room!!! Peace is absent in the room of the non-Christian.

The Getty's have been my fav hymn writers since college. When covid hit, i listened to this song. Yesterday my friend took me to their concert in Greenville South Carolina at First Pres Church and they sang this song and my fav In Christ alone. I will never forget this amazing moment to worship together regardless of color and where we are comimg from. I will be going back to MAlawi Africa with a joyful and grateful heart to have seen the Getty's perform live.

Many comments are commenting on how great of an Easter Hymn it is, and I agree, but I see this even more as a Requiem hymn (funeral). Moreover, in the state that we find the world God created in, this hymn truly is a beacon of hope to those living with the reality of the COVID-19 Corona Virus. Keith Getty told me at a conference that this song was based on the first question and answer of the Heidelberg Catechism which asks: "What is your only comfort in life and death?" The answer is: That I am not my own, but belong, body and soul, in life and in death, to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ". So, easter song? Yes! Requiem hymn? Certainly! But, it's also a GREAT confession of faith!

Yes life in earth is full of trials and struggles. But Jesus Christ promise us eternal life is enough to live life according to His will.
This song is so good. I sang this at church and have had it in my head since. This is so powerful, it reminds us that we aren't praising a dead saviour but a living one. God is good, he wants the best for us that is why he died to save us so we could have a personal relationship with us. God bless you all x

I love this song. I shared it with a friend whose 91 year old husband was suffering from Covid-19. She expressed that it was a great blessing to both of them. Her husband passed away Mar. 28, and this week I learned that she too has the virus and may join her husband in heaven. We have included in our Thought for the day which our Church, St Stephens in London, issues every day during the lockdown. Yes, lets talk about death! Christians get ill and even die - but we approach death from a totally different perspective to that of the world. We can be free from fear. Why? Because we know that God has His hand on our lives. We remember that Jesus has gone through death and come out the other side. This means that we know our future is safe with the Lord in Heaven. We sing , Hallelujah!

You are exactly right Ian. If we are in Christ we do not fear death the same way the world does. Granted, we do mourn death as it’s not a natural condition, but a consequence of our Fall in Adam. However, as you mentioned, Christ conquered death, and we’re assured of our coming eternal presence with the Lord.
Remember this when death nears for you and your brothers and sisters in Christ: The day you die, is the last day that you’ll ever sin against the good God that saved you!

This is the truth we speak before the spread of the Coronavirus. Nothing comes apart from the command of the only King of heaven and earth. He holds our days in His blessed, strong, pierced hands.
Body and souls, brothers and sisters, we belong to Him who redeemed us. May we have from Him the strength and courage to proclaim this to our families, friends, colleagues, while we cry with them for their (or our) mournings.

The answer to "what comes apart from His command" is "the love of Christ in which we stand" -- in other words, it is not based on our response to his commands - God gives us certain things only when we obey -but His love is not one of those things - He loves us independent of our response .
@@jz551 I don't think that's the sense of the lyrics you quoted, otherwise "the love of Christ" should be the answer to "Who hold our days within his hand?". The sense is pretty obvious: who hold our days? Jesus. What comes apart? Nothing. What will keep us to the end? The love of Christ. :)
