Hi everyone, I'm Gary Millar, and I was the Dj in that video with the celebs. Watching it, quite literally made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. Fantastic nights working with my friend Steve Teasdale, who still dj's today. The tickets, and flyers on the wall were from the later days of Granada ownership, where prices and standards dropped considerably. I was at one stage one of Cleveland longest running Dj's with close to 40 years under my belt in various clubs in Cleveland, which included the Inncognito, Gaskins, Reflections, Bianco's plus clubs in Redcar and many, many, more much, much, further away. Naturally, now at 67 years old I'm well retired from Djing now, although I still play about at home mixing music just for fun, if I'm feeling up to it. (Old habits die hard!!) I have now moved away from my home town of Middlesbrough to North Wales, which I love and sadly, I won't ever be returning to the Boro. But thanks for this great video, and the many memories.. some good, and some not so good! Take care everyone, Gary.
Thanks Gary. Great to hear from you. I came across quite a few photos of you with the celebs but I only had the length of the track to use for the slide show so tried to go for a bit of a mix and squeeze others in where I could. Glad you enjoyed the video. Mike
@@anythingoldmechanical I meant to menton too that I am a little jealous that you got to meet Malandra Burrows. Had a huge crush on her back in the day! 😍
Had a lump in my throat at the end when this guy played, brought back so many memories of my youth with my mates, young and daft, looking for the last dance when this played..so glad I got to spend time at this great place between 1988- 1995…Christmas eves were always special in there. Everyone drunk with tinsel round their necks, offices had all broke up.
back in 1974 i worked for a company called HC troldahl .they were based on Bridge st west just under the tunnel near the station .I was there one day fitting catering equipment with an engineer [i was only an apprentice back then ] there were lots of guys there doing various jobs .The state of the art sound system [for 1974 ] had just been installed and the guys were about tp test it .The very first record ever played was Loves theme by Barry white .When it came on we all stopped to listen .The sound was fantastic .i had never heard anything like it .Everyone just stood and looked at each other and when the record finished we all clapped
@middlesbroughmike I definitely 100% remember you buddy you were a regular Mike , hope yer well. I too was a DJ there and shared my time with 2 amazing guys gary Millar & Mike Graham learn a lot from these guys and still have lots of ❤ for them , still in contact with Gary even though he left us to live in wales 😂 but we still remain friends He was the DJ I looked up to because of his mixing ability they didn’t call him “The mixmaster Millar” for nothing he could mix anything & if I learnt anything from anyone it’s Gary , Mike was more eclectic but was also a fantastic DJ and I learnt more obscure music from Mike . the place holds fond memories for me that’s why I held the “Madison re-union” nights many years ago which proved to be very successful and brought a lot of people together again , we had people from all over the world turn up , this was a very special place in the Town and it’s only now that we don’t have it anymore we reminisce about how good it actually was and how important it was to Teessiders over those years some people met in there and actually got married afterwards honestly I’ve heard countless stories. I loved working at Madison , But let’s not forget Macy’s as well which really was my domain playing more club orientated music I also worked in Billy Paul’s downstairs as well , but what made it more special was the people I worked with everyone from the brilliant doorman to the bar staff , the promo team , the restaurant to the office and management , it was a Huge part of my life for so long and I’m proud I was part of this amazing club and I shared it with so many truly amazing people , I’m still DJ’ing today and I still get people coming up to me in the Dovecot saying they remember me from Madison and Macy’s or Billy Paul’s 😮 amazing ❤️
Hi Steve, great memories mate. Yeah, I was a bit of a regular in the place and still miss it to this day. It was loved by many people and the amount of people that have watched this video to date goes to show just that. It's a shame that it is no more, and is very unlikely to ever be again but nevertheless it's made some great memories for all that visited and worked in there. Great to hear that you're still spinning. What day do you do the Dovecot? I visit there regualrly on a Friday and the occasional wednesday.
I was the DJ at the Madison from 1983 to 1989, also worked at the Top Deck in Redcar which was owned by Taz Leisure which also owned Madison. When I started as DJ at the Madison I was 19 years old, I was told if anyone asks my age I had to tell them I was 21, as it was a 21 years and older club at the time, no jeans, no trainers and if the men didn't have a shirt and tie on you didn't get in. I have fond memories of the customers and staff, and the celebrities I met. Of course when I started at Madison Maceys didn't even exist, that came about 3 years later. I remember one night shutting down the sound system by pulling the main switch as 1 of the amplifiers had burst in to flames, you could have heard a pin drop. All the doorstaff came running in.
Hi Brian , was you the DJ that had the motor bike or the guy who lived doggy way think, sure he had rover . I used to go Maddison most nights after 1983 , one of my mates ended up getting a job there in the DJ booth like yourself.
So many memories as i worked as a full time day cellarman in the early 80s. I remember when the phone box arrived it was lifted up to the car park area by crane then myself along with 5 bouncers man handled it into night club using broom shanks as rollers😊
Awesome this like. Love these vidoes . Would still love to no what happened to all the Christmas decorations display that use to be under the glass lift, also be mint if you could explore the old caretaker flat if its still there im sure it was above Newton mall keep them coming
I struggled to get permissions for photos but a friend of mine sent me the ones she had. She's the same age as me so will have visited around the mid 90s like I did.
I wonder whether there's still any remnants of the old Centrefolds nightclub? Seem to remember that was tucked above the shops, roughly where Hays Travel is now.
For a place with such a cheesy name Centrefolds was quite a gothy club in my uni days, remember dancing to Sister of Mercy and stuff like that in there. Still have a couple of stickers on my record box to this day.
@@chrisharley1973 I went back there plenty, so I must've liked it. On the downside, they had godawful Hansa lager on tap. I only ever remember being very, very drunk in there.

Like a badge of honour if you got that last dance. Melancholy hell, if not😂
@@garycoates4603 I always tried to get tapped up and out of the club before the last dance lol
Thanks for the trip back in time met my late wife in the madison and i can still make out where we first spoke priceless
It's strange isn't it. Even though the place is stripped to a shell you can still make out where you used to hang out etc. Thanks for watching.

Its a little before my time but I'm aware of it as my parents told me about it. The door is still there but I believe it lead to flats now
