This is amazing! I was born after this time in 2001 but I love the old Middlesbrough, even though I didn’t live in it, it makes me sad knowing I’ll never get to experience it, life seemed so much better back then!
Neat video, love the weird unused spaces in Cleveland Centre, I was born in 99 and vaguely remember it being open as child, same with the boat where George etc went.
In retrospect, looking at the difference in the colour of the celing tiles between the smoking and non-smoking areas perhaps the distance between the two was enough to make a difference after all, as the non-smoking area is noticeably cleaner!
There used to be escalators to the car park which were removed a few years later, however I remember there was a mezzanine above the Newton Mall, which the escalators stopped at. I thought Sarah’s was there!
Yes, I do recall the escalators at the entrance to Newton Mall. There was a Jewelers located in a unit at the bottom of them. The escalators went up to the second floor (car park) and the covered entrance is still there in the car park (albeit boarded up). Of course, any evidence of them existing inside the Mall has long gone. Sarah's is technically on the first floor as its at the same level as the service access to the units (and the same level as the units that have an upstairs, like New Look). Interestingly when the centre was first built the staircase that led to Sarahs (which started out life as an Indian Restaurant) had an additional flight of stairs that led to the car park. These were later removed and the celing remodled to suit.
Ah I see, thanks. It is heartbreaking how drastically the centre has been battered in the last 20 years - ownership under The Mall was okay however it sucked out all of the centre’s personality and character. Waypoint New Frontier, who sold it to the council last year, oversaw its worst times, mainly when BHS, Topshop and H&M left. If the council want to rejuvenate it they should bring back Centre Square and those little features that made it worth visiting. How did you get into the service area? Did you have permission?
I totally agree. The centre area where people used to meet, have lunch etc (Endeavour) was a fantastic space, and magical at Christmas. Centre's shouldn't always be about retail space. Communal space for socialising is important too and has long been missing from the Cleveland Centre. Before mobile phones, the centre was THE place to meet people in the town. It would be great if it was once again. Yes, I've been fortunate enough to have permission to see 'behind the scenes' in the centre over the last few weeks. I have a few more videos to come which will document my experiences. Thank you for you contributions and please do keep them coming.
Sarahs Wow its class you got in here i was like put the camera near the bin to see if owts in there 😂,What about getting in the old madison nighclub and the old pub under Barclays bank well before my time like 😂
Hi, yeah I was really lucky to get in there. I've been wanting to access it for years. It's great how it's survived so well, just a shame it won't be used for anything. I've also accessed the 2 units you've mentioned and I'll have videos about those coming soon. 👍
@@middlesbroughmike1027 I started going to the Madison in 1994 (when I was 15!) and had many a night in there. I'd love to have a look around it again.
@rufusleaking3934 yes, the lion and falcon became part of Boots. I do have some footage of it but there's not a lot to see. The old Billy Paul's space is still there. I've done a video of that if you search my channel.
its like a time machine going back in there :)
God, I remember this place from when I was a kid. Crazy to think it's still there.
@hellspawn sadly it's no longer open obviously but great that it's survived so well
Thank you so much Mike 😊
Well done getting in there, I haven't been there since the 80s and everything was decorated in shades of green!
Yeah, pretty much still is mate!

Great to see that shot of Romer Parrish. I had a Saturday job there around 1979 when I was at 6th Form College.

I went to see the Stone Roses at the Crypt in 1989. Next morning/lunchtime, we went to Sarah's... only to find the band at the next table to us.

Sarah’s made a gorgeous quiche n chips 😋😂

The mince and dumplings were amazing
Sounds like the extractor fans were still in operation in the kitchen area?
Remember Sarahs kitchen nice meals
Yeah, it was just a nice, down to earth cafe. Few and far between now. Nearest thing I think is Jean's Kitchen in the Dundas.

Is that still there? But closed off
Yes, it's as you see it in the video.
Apparently there doors upstairs in barclays that lead to whats left of the madison night club
I've got a video on that coming soon.
Such a shame. Middlesbrough town centre has been allowed to go to absolute rack and ruin. They wrecked the Cleveland Centre.
Theres also an underground pub in the cleveland centre
It's not there anymore and is now part of Boots
Hello think that was the falcon, but billy Paul's I believe is under Barclays bank still accessible. Regards@@middlesbroughmike1027

My next door neighbour worked there. So sad how much better the boro used to be. Capitalism and too much technology for you
