I live and grew up in Middlesbrough in some of the roughest parts and I have to say this broke my heart but was also really inspiring. It’s took a beating from decades of austerity but it’s heart is still there, people are very friendly you could have a conversation with anyone. Thank you for this!
You haven't seen much of the world of you call parts of The Boro ,'rough'. Visit Manila in The Philippines or Detroit in USA and you'll see what I mean.

I lived in Middlesbrough for three years as a student, I saw the best and worst of it but either way it left an impression on me and I go back at least once a year to relive my university memories. 3 years I cherished.
Props to Sunita and also to the people she portrayed. They all showed such a wonderful spirit, in spite of setbacks/deprivation and what not. Best of luck, they deserve it with that attitude.
I grew up in South Bank. I know Middlesbrough and North Ormsby well. The community was a community and everyone was on the same level. I loved the place and then it was an amazing place. I visit regularly to visit Normanby cemetery. Unfortunately South Bank has almost disappeared and looks forgotten as it has. Southern government promised everything to make Cleveland, Teesside much better, but hey! that's what they do to get elected and forget what they promised. South Bank, Normanby, North Ormsby and Middlesbrough could be a beautiful place to live and it could thrive giving the input. Housing, leisure, policing.
i live in middlesbrough & not gonna lie no where like here, it’s so diverse and no one ever sees, yes has deprived areas but it’s modernising and developing so fast the centre is changing a lot new spectors opening like game design ect, and i’m proud of this town and how everyone is helping everyone
Whether be it a town or village or a city. Humans deserve equal opportunity and rights. No one should be left behind irrespective of any differences. The differences aren't there for hating each other or making others feel bad or anything, we should all celebrate differennces. Every single living creature deserves respect and dignity. 👍🏼
Old vincey loves Middlesbrough i remember sampling the local delicacy named 'parmo' what a delight!!!! Paired with the delightfully hoppy yet citrusy locally brewed ale named 'fosters' it sent old vinceys head spinning with joy.
This idea that if your rich it's because you deserve it and if your poor it's because you deserve it breaks my heart. We all deserve a life that supports family and development and small northern towns are hanging on by their fingernails.

The suburbs and surrounding areas are great but Unfortunately Middlesbrough centre is largely a dump. There’s so few opportunities that most of us leave for a better life.
very insightful video on Middlesbrough. i’m not sure what my views were before this video, but my outlook has certainly been changed. you mentioned at the end “do you think this is a positive representation?” and for me personally it showed unity and locals wanting to make change. i hope to see north ormesby succeed in the future :)

i went to college in Middlesbrough, St Mary's on Saltersgill Avenue. Loved my time there partying in the town at the Madisson and the whole area was like a large village. last time i was home in the Northeast i was shocked how much the whole of the NE has changed with immigration. would be great to get an update on what Nicola has delivered in the year she has been in charge.
Now, this is the culture guardian content I occasionally check for The life and culture and art sections of the Guardian are really excellent I think. The Island was a profound and haunting documentary. Edit: idk what method is used in filming, but Guardian work on docos has this ethereal, spiritual and atmospheric quality that lends a melancholy, dreamlike atmosphere. You can see this in the photography and Art section, too. It's both beautiful and haunting.

In fact, the proverb is very clever. The meaning is that the best growing experience for a child can't be obtained only through what their parents can provide, but also through what the community has to. Resources like libraries, playgrounds, policement, schools and hospitals are fundamental to a safe and healthy environment that can cause a positive growth of the little citizens. If the community is sick, the families feel the consequences, specially the children.
When I moved into doggie in 1972 it was a lovely community with quiet clean streets, with many older people who had brought there children up there. Labour has always been the dominant political party and I can’t say they have helped the area at all during its decline. There is no doubt that the disastrous decision to demolish its characterful Victorian market square contributed to its decline. The market day brought in traders from all over the north east. Material stalls, fresh fruit and veg, clothes, fresh fish, shoes, second hand goods, hardware - North Ormesby was the place you went on a Tuesday. In its place they built prefab slums that had to be demolished only twenty years or so later. Unfortunately the lady who won the election will find Labour too concerned with their own political image to actually come up with any real solutions to what ails Doggie now. The standards of the dwellings declined as it wasn’t worth upgrading or investing because of falling house prices. The houses were built on marsh land and most have recurring rising damp. It would now be termed a mixed-race community but that doesn’t appear to be the problem, the majority of people are lovely and many of our friends still live there but it has seen an influx of people with drug related and other social problems. Best wishes to all in Doggie, I sincerely hope your new Labour councillor does well.
Doggy is a very old name and I thought it was from 40s/50s when there were racing dogs sold at the market. 2 separate Squares. The West Square had the E Bus Stand while the main road between the squares had the other bus stops including the Stockton "O" Bus, Green. North Ormesby because it was a Victorian New Town development on the road into Middlesbrough from Ormesby an old established village. Going towards Ormesby 2 massive Council estates. Brambles Farm named after the farm and Park End because it ended at Stewarts Park the former home of one the founders of Cargo Fleet/Dorman Long Iron and Steel Works. Bolckov & Brown. The other lived in what was the Ladle pub and what became Prissick Schools and Council Plant/Tree Nursery.

Lived in Boro 31 years now, its rough with the council being almost bankrupt, poverty at record high, alot of the high street closing down. Not alot of opportunities for young people. It really is awful feeling like your Postcode defines how your life is going to be. However, the people are some of the friendliest and kind people youll ever meet. Northern spirit really is a strange wonderful thing. I just hope that too doesnt fade away 🫤
Community centres bring people together. Our communities lost, the centres, therfore, you loose the ability to, establish new relations and maintain consistent relationships for thst matter. As centres can have a number of classes, coffee morning, youth club, activities etc, the community centres where the heart of community, u take away tht, u have a body of veins, and blood, with no where to go.
I am from middlesbrough but now live in the south of England its nice to see you being positive i was brought up in whinny banks East Crescent as a child and North Ormesby ,Jubilee Street then Grovehill and Grangetown some of the toughest places in middlesbrough but i have to be honest life is much easier since i moved to the south of England Growing up was great but now its a criminal hub its only a town yet has a higher crime rate than some cities 10 x there size crime and corruption is rife I still support middlesbrough fc but i would advise young people to leave middlesbrough as soon as they can it doesn't have a future and will only become worse Labour , Conservative , doesn't matter both governments have sent the highest numbers of illegal immigrants to middlesbrough than anywhere else in the uk

Sadly the north east gets neglected the worst in England by the current government. Middlesbrough, Hartlepool, Darlington etc are extremely run down with high unemployment and high crime

After the way the previous cllr treated North Ormesby, he has spooked it for another independent cllr to be elected there.
She has never bothered to look at the other part of North Ormesby eg Oakfield Rd, Grove Rd etc. Nice semis, nice gardens etc
