I was at that Open. I lived in Chicago and NYC. Got married to my lovely wife in 2003. Took her to her first professional golf tournament. At Olympia Fields. Jim won. Nice memory.
Feherty once said that Jim's swing was "like an octopus falling out of a tree". But, at impact, it was a sight to behold. Flawless. Furyk was on point that week. No one was close.
Worse thing anybody could have done was try and change that swing.... It's wonderful, and boy he was a brilliant player. Never ever change what got you there
The 2003 PGA season was the year for first time and only time Major Winners. Weir, Furyk, Micheel and Curtis. Micheel was ranked 169th when he won the PGA. Weir was the first lefty and only Canadian to win the Masters or a Major men's title. Curtis was 300-1 to win the Open, the lowest ranked player since the world rankings were first calculated.
Too bad the US Open won't be coming back to Olympia Fields and many other great golf courses. I think it made a mistake going back to a limited number of courses each year. No course should hold the US Open more than once a decade.
Jim is such a classy guy and a great representative of the PGA Tour and the USGA.
Enjoyed watching this with dad! Class act and great victory.

That was really nice. Great old course and a great champion.
Nothing better than moments like that in golf like that scene on the 18th when he won. What a sport

Comes across as a lovely gentleman. Bravo.

he shot 58 with that swing
Crazy that this was his only Major considering he’s finished in the Top 5 in Majors 16 times!
