    That original Fiesta looks so cool though... they should make a modern version inspired by the original design.

    The thing about older cars is that you have to DRIVE them, rather than letting computerised machinery do most of the hard work. This means, in modern cars especially, you don't really feel what the car is actually doing. Yes its great how car have become much safer, but I believe that a lot of drivers now don't know how to react when they get into a bit of hash!!

      It’s a hard one for me because I love both but I gotta go with the Mk7......But I’m biased cause I own one ahahahahah. However it would be cool to drive a Mk1 but just don’t know how I could live with one as a daily

      i had 6 mk 1's and loved every one had 1 european one, the others were U.S. versions with larger more powerful 1.9 L engine. i lived in a snowy climate, and they were fantastic on bad roads. i've had 2 new fiestas, NEVER again what junk. 5 of 6 mk 1's over 300,000 miles. the 2012's didn't make 130,000 miles

    Yes! But the 1982 MK1 I had in the mid 90s was a hell of a lot more fun to drive without the safety garb on cars nowadays. You had to (pump) work that brake peddle to sharp stop in wet weather or poo your pants skidding through the traffic lights on red. Those old cars had character and minimal engine headaches as you could fix lots of things yourself cheaply or buy a cheap engine to replace it from the local scrappy. I miss my little old MK1 so much.

    problem here is, you've used a Mk1 fiesta base with the low compression 1 litre engine. hardly a fair test if you ask me. I use a mk2 1.1 Popular Plus as a daily driver & it comes with a Radio cassette & rear seatbelts standard. It also has 50bhp & can do 50 to the Gallon. the Merits the Fiesta always had was that it was always a fun car to drive & I can tell you there is nothing wrong with the firmness of the pedals & gearshift. the Clutch is nice & light to use & the gear change is crisp. then you moan about the lack of power steering. keep your tracking good & your tyres at 30psi & it is as good as any modern car. The problem here is nobody can appreciate just how good mk1 & mk2 fiestas are because people are so used to technology that it's all people look at cars for. I can't believe how biased this is. yes cars have come on but if you've got nothing nice to say about the older cars then don't do a comparison between a modern car you can buy for £16,000 & a little classic you can pick up for less than £4000 (I paid £700 for my Mk2). At the end of the day you get what you pay for. I'd rather have my little mk2 for it'll gain value in a couple of years, it's good looking, fun to drive & above all, cheap. insurance is group 3 so even though I'm 19 I get good insurance of about £700 in my first year. Parts are cheap too, a water pump is £20, new exhaust front box is £30, oil filter is £3, brake pads are £5 & an oil change is £12. The beauty of the older cars is they can be worked on by anybody (& most maintenance is done by myself & I'm not even a mechanic) & the engines are near bullet proof. My car's always started first turn of the key in the coldest days of winter & never overheated in the hottest of summer days. If you want cheap, reliable, charming, fun-to-drive transport, get an older fezza. If you want a mobile branch of PC-world which will lose it's value in two miles & cost more to service, get a modern fezza. Though saying that, we're in a recession so you'd probably only be able to get the newer car on hire purchase so it wouldn't really be your car as such

      +Hancockified Well said mate. I personally think both the older and newer Fiestas have their pros and cons, what they've done here in this video is rather silly. I certainly wouldn't turn my nose up at an old Fiesta!

    • @GreyTheFloydianSergal
      @GreyTheFloydianSergal 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steve ThatsAllImSaying since that post, i had a shot in a new fiesta ST & I don't like the driving position, the car feels like it's on stilts, the seats are too hard & the clutch pedal tries to fire your left foot through the roof. I still have my Mk2 though, still a daily & guess what? Still running as well (if not better) as the day I got her

    • @stevethatsallimsaying4041
      @stevethatsallimsaying4041 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Hancockified Its funny you should say that as I didn't like the driving position in another modern car - the Vauxhall Insignia. Don't get me wrong I like cars old and new, but with the older cars you can't help feeling that there's less to go wrong, plus you actually feel like you're driving the car, not the other way around. Lol!

    • @GreyTheFloydianSergal
      @GreyTheFloydianSergal 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steve ThatsAllImSaying Exactly. Do you also feel somehow that the older car has more of a personality? Like you could take two classics that are exactly the same in very detail, but they feel different somehow

  • @wallacewestmeath
    @wallacewestmeath 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    my first car was same as that old Fiesta . An unfindable leak meant the carpet was always wet, starting problems on cold damp mornings but I was faced with choosing one now. I'd choose the old one purely because old cars had character, they did not all look the same like they do now .

    Came as a shock that. You'd never have guessed that 36 years of technological advancement would have brought this result, so we needed these folk to tell us. Cheers muchly.

    They should've compared the rear window surface, the new fiesta has almost none while the mk1 gives you a wide panorama through the rear view mirror. Mine is from '79 and it's wonderful to drive it. And repairs? Easy AF, you'll be able to reach everything under the hood without removing almost anything. Small repairs on a new fiesta? Good luck removing half the engine.

    The mk1 has a very cute look to it, in fact many of the older styles are becoming more attractive these days, probably bcos all modern cars are so big and bulky bulbus looking with the stylish sharp edges to them, obviously its so simple to drive with no tech whatsoever in it so it probably would appeal to the older person, the latest fiesta is a lovely car with all the tech you need but would feel like you were driving the uss enterprise!

    Give me the MK1. I drove mine literally all over the US + Canada, from LA to Tenessee, through the Rockies and into Alberta multiple times over the course of almost 10 years. I once got chased by some small town local in eastern IA that insisted I should "party" with him as I passed through his town where I stopped in the middle of the night to have a snack with two lovely lady friends of mine on the way to Nashville. He could outrun me with power but not wits - I got away. Many memories of my MK1, memories that Bluetooth, Airbags, Keyless, Remote mirrors and all the rest would have never given me. Bottom line, as others so eloquently have stated here, attempting to compare1980 technology to now is simply ludicrous. We didn't even have flip-phones then. My MK1, however, DID have decent sound - an Alpine Cassette receiver, EQ, Amp - not bad! Also had nice nice XR2 alloys that I scored somewhere. And to top it off, I cooked tailpipe tubesteaks on the manifolds in Canada ... TASTY! (translation: "HotDogs") ... takes about 50 miles of driving. Can you FIND the manifolds on a new Fiesta? Now the new one is discontinued. No loss. I'm pretty sure it wasn't even German built anyway.

      I am sick and tired of people saying all "modern cars look the same". And? Cars from every era have had similarites. Compare a mk1 fiesta with a mk1 golf. Compare an old jensen healey with a tvr. A de tomaso pantera and a countach. A Bel air and a Fairlane, I could go on. All have similar shapes. Do I complain? No. Because the designers take what works and build on it. They did this back in the day, and they still do now. I love the mk1 fiesta. I really do. I also like the mk7. But I don't have delusions about either. So for gods sake, take off the nostalgia shades will you.

    I'm no Ford fan, but this is typical of the all style & no content guff that's ruined cars. The reason you don't feel the pot holes the new Festa is because it's so bloated with power steering & umpteen airbags etc that it's momentum makes it as responsive as an aircraft carrier. Those "designers" can scribble all the fat A pillar/mirror/light combos they want, but it'll be proper engineers who decide what we'll be driving in the future. At least it will, if we buy cars to drive & not to look at

    • @resplendentwitticism
      @resplendentwitticism 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Power steering makes driving easier and more responsive when in a sticky situation, it has better brakes to avoid a possible collision when someone/something is in the road, it has turn signals in the mirror to better indicate you're turning, there are front and side air bags to protect occupants in a crash. It's still a fun car to drive even if it's not as communicative as prior generations. Saving lives > raw driving.

    I am like you Brits about the old Fiesta . I am an older guy and had a few old British cars . A dozen of MGB , one MGC , Spitfires , Herald ,so TR cars , A Jag XKE , so Austins 100 to Austin America I had a 1275 S motor that I loved . I even had a Morgan . Now I only own a MGTD that I kept for fun . The only reason why I am here is because I found a 1st gen. Ford Fiesta that dont look to bad . I believe it is a 1982 model year . I know they wasn't fast at all but much faster than the America I had . The guy wants 2,000 US dollars for it . I think it is to much .

    The comments section in this video are comedy gold 😂
    Speaking from my own experience of a Mk2 1.1L and a Mk2 XR2 I’ll say that old Fiestas were crap. They weren’t particularly good then and they are even less so now. Rattly OHV and CVH engines. Poor road holding and gutless performers. They rust for fun.
    My wife’s 2016 Fiesta Titanium X owned from new has needed nothing during it’s five years other than servicing. It’s performance and road holding would leave my old XR2 for dust. It’s fun to drive, has plenty of feel and feedback - yet also has comfort and refinement.
    Imagine still having to change points and rotor arms if you want it to start on a cold damp day, no thanks!
    Those who’d rather daily drive a gutless sloppy Mk1 tin can everyday must be on crack 😂. I suppose black & white TV was better too? 😅

    Rather have the Mk1 - Are they completely crazy. I cant stand this stupid rose tinted thick mentality that imagines everything old is bloody fantastic and everything new is rubbish. No doubt if this video had actually been made in 1977 the comments would have been Ford Popular every day! Nuts

    • @BritishCommentWriter
      @BritishCommentWriter 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only complaint people would have had in the past would have been about the shape. The mechanics of the Ford Popular weren't that different to the Fiesta Mk1. A car from ten years ago wouldn't have been that different to the Fiesta Mk1. Things have objectively changed. Cars now are far too heavy and far too electronically controlled. The modern Fiesta doesn't even have a steering column for crying out loud. It has dozens of toys you could never want and has so many features you never use that you have to press a dozen buttons to cycle through them all. There are also a dozen ways the car can transmit information about you that you don't want, and the damn thing can even link up with Facebook. If some dipshit decided to hack the engine management system and drive me into a tree, or if there was a problem like the Toyota recall of 2009, there's nothing I could do about it. There are so many driver's assists that driving it becomes an utter bore and you feel like you are being treated like a drooling moron who can't look after himself. And the pillars are so thick you can't see out the back properly. And don't tell us its rose tinted spectacles. A lot of us are driving these cars right now and can directly compare them. This isn't not liking old things for the sake of it. This is having a look at the Facebook, interconnected, nannying, committee made, corporate, interchangeable crap of today and saying enough is enough.

    • @cjmillsnun
      @cjmillsnun 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      BritishCommentWriter What are you talking about doesn't have a steering column? Of course it does. You obviously have no idea how EPAS works. It is a motor and torque sensors mounted on the steering column that along with a speed sensor provides assistance to a conventional rack and pinion steering assembly.
      As far as a car from 10 years ago being not that different to a Mk1 Fiesta, are you having a laugh?
      10 years ago common rail injection diesels and sequential fuel injection petrols were common (all electronically controlled with the same systems used today), and aside from infotainment (that horrid term for the computer that has replaced the radio) weren't much different to the cars of today. By then ABS was mandatory, airbags were everywhere and Euro NCAP was well established. In other words, the cars of 10 years ago had much more in common with the cars of today than the cars of the 70s and 80s.
      And mechanically there was a big difference between the Mk1 Fiesta and the Pop.
      The Mk1 Fiesta had MacPherson strut suspension and coil spring rear suspension. It was transverse engined front wheel drive, and was a OHV engine with electronic ignition. Yes it was still a dizzy and carb but already the stage was being set for the modern improvements. It marked the start of the changeover from RWD to FWD in the Ford lineup, the Sierra and Granada/Scorpio being the last RWD Fords made in Europe.
      The Ford pop had a side valve engine, points ignition (always guaranteed to let you down in the pouring rain!) and a manual choke (I'd take that over the awful Ford VV carb used in the Fiesta though) It had a live axle and worm and roller steering.
      You can probably tell I've driven a few cars in my time, and to be honest my favourite car would be an old Mini Cooper, but in all honesty for modern day motoring, I quite like the new Fiesta, the steering isn't too wooden considering it is power assisted and it corners well. At speed it tightens up as the power assistance fades away, giving you some feel. You can turn the traction control off and you'll find that in anything but the absolute worst conditions it wasn't doing a lot anyway (the grip is damn good).
      As far as maintaining it goes, grab a code reader off eBay and a good socket set. Under the skin, it's still an engine, it has pistons, valves and cams. The manual box isn't that different to the Mk1. Brakes are brakes and are still simple to maintain. Even faults in the ABS are generally down to sensors and that can be checked with a multimeter and someone spinning the wheel whilst the car is jacked up. In other words, it's still DIYable, just a different kind of DIY.
      Also the only information that this particular car can transmit about you is if you are involved in an accident. It will then call the emergency services. Also if someone hacked the engine management system (very unlikely), you still have your gears, clutch, brakes and ignition switch. Dip the clutch, take it out of gear and brake. Once at a stand, turn the car off. No need to scaremonger about what little you can do about things.
      And yes, rose tinted spectacles. There are less deaths and injuries on our roads, despite more than double the driving population since the 70s. A lot of that is down to safer cars, both in terms of active safety (better handling, grip, braking and engine response), and passive safety (crumple zones, airbags, side impact beams, etc).

      Stop obfuscating the issue. Who gives a flying donkey turd about the inner-workings of EPAS? Yeah, I admit I got it wrong. Whoop-de-fucking doo. It's a piece of shit I want no part of, nor should any other driver that has any respect for themselves. And just because THIS car has a steering column doesn't mean that there aren’t cars that don’t have them, like the Infiniti Q50 for example.
      The point I was making, as I suspect you damn well know, is that the cars of ten years ago merely assisted driver input in a way that was pretty similar to the way they had for decades. Power steering was pretty much the same basic design it was back in the 1920s, as was ABS the same basic design from the 1970s, and engine management systems had no more control over vehicle functions than they did in the 1980s. The change in the last ten years is to take away more and more driver input. Most ten year old cars DID NOT have "drive by wire" steering, brakes and/or accelerators OR electronic stability controls OR active braking systems OR the ability to remotely shut the engine off OR invasive electronic surveillance of the driver. For fuck's sake, the thing CAN PARK ITSELF now. (And YES I understand this Fiesta may not have every single one of these things, but it’s coming damn it). And ten years ago, nobody would have been able to murder Michael Hastings with his own car and then use it to cover up for them, and manufacturers were not routinely recalling cars by the million because they weren’t overly automated, overpriced interchangeable shit heaps that had all the handling and excitement of a minibus and all the durability of a plastic bottle. But most importantly, ten years ago we actually had the self-esteem and self-respect to trust our own judgement and skills when it came to driving. We didn’t need cars that decided when to brake and when to steer. In the next ten years, we’ll be considering legislation to force people to drive only FULLY automated cars because we’ll be so utterly sissified that we can’t imagine taking on the responsibility of driving ourselves.
      And a code reader off ebay is asking for trouble. There’s a reason why garages buy diagnostic equipment worth hundreds of thousands of pounds, and not just get a few shitty code readers off ebay.

    Clueless designers - cars will be electric from now on, and electric cars don't need huge air intakes for cooling. Surely this is obvious to everyone by now?

      yep, will be the end of gasoline by then, also they had mirrors, no reason for mirrors with technology and cameras, they ruin the drag factor.

    The Mk1 though will outlast the crappy later models whose TCMs leave you stranded with no warning and the shitty dampers need to be replaced even before reaching 5 years! The new fiestas are a joke.
