    UPDATE Feb. 2020
We did a recalculation in Feb 2020 and found out we still spend around the same amount of money in Colombia.
    --
Update: Cost of Living in Medellin 2019
We planned to do another video in with the updated numbers in 2019 and tracked our cost of living again, but I found that we are still spending this amount (+/-10%) so this video is still up to date with our current situation (May 2019)
The only difference we have is that we cut down on our rental cost by moving to another apartment by around USD 80/m.

Although it's cheaper in other parts of the world such Indonesia, esp Sumatra, Cambodia or even Vietnam, Colombia is very inexpensive. I LOVE going there, Even the hotels are inexpensive. I've met wonderful people there and Colombians are so delightfully friendly.

$420 US for a 2 bedroom, clean, modern, apartment in Medellin is an amazing deal for US/foreign income earners. I prefer to live in Cartagena however if i I had the choice because it is not landlocked. You guys are living my dream as a millenial! Bravo! Though $2165 US was higher than i expected even for 2 people.

Tip: When you're at the supermarket pan the camera across the prices. Even if its too fast to read normally people who are interested can play it back in slow motion. See a bunch of food costs $40 doesn't tell us anything. We know its cheap. But what is really interesting is a direct comparison with what we normally buy. Also try to mention organic foods as that is something many people crave. How much more are they? How is the quality compared to the normal stuff? And start the video with the current exchange rate to Euro and USD. That should cover just about everyone.

    • @HowToExpat
      @HowToExpat  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@blazerdan69 Thanks for your comment Damian. First, it is important to figure out if you can get a visa and what type of visa you are able to get. Second, you mentioned family, coming with kids can be expensive especially if you want to put them into an international school. I have to be honest with you, all of our clients spend more than that. 1250USD is not a lot and depending on the lifestyle you're looking for maybe not enough.
I would suggest visiting Medellin first in order to figure out if it is a fit for you and then looking into all the things like visa, rent, taxes etc. before actually considering moving.
      I hope it helps,

Buying fruits and veggies at the supermarket is to give money away compared to buy the same products from street vendors. When I was living in Laureles there was a truck coming from outside the city to our area every Sunday, smack full with fruits and veggies. I bought my whole weekly supply there, which was two or three grocery bags full and I never paid more than around 5 Euro. If you are staying in Medellin visit the minorista or mayorista for good shopping.

In general, the cost of living there is about the same in Panama depending on where you live. The rent you are paying is probably better than what you will find in Panama City but equivalent outside the city. The cost of eating out is definitely better. That same meal you had would cost around $4.50. Fruits and vegetables are cheaper if you stick to local stuff and especially if you go to the farmers market. As far as business taxes goes, you will not pay any if it is income generated from outside the country. Income generated within the country I'm not sure about.

      Hola Yeiz,
Si es la verdad el clima en Medellín es perfecta, al menos para nosotros, nunca hace frio de verdad pero tampoco es caliente como en la costa caribe.
¡Seguramente te va a gustar el clima de Medellín!

Hey Sam & Tacha, I recently came across your TH-cam channel by chance bc I am interested in visiting/living in Colombia and people seem to all say to me that Medellin is the destination! I guess it is no surprise your channel popped up in the search! I have found time right now due to COVID to view and became hooked on your channel! Your videos are so informative and easy to understand! I ring the bell, subscribe and like so many videos!
I am eagerly hoping to ex-pat to Colombia by means of teaching English when international travel is permitted there again (hopefully sep 1 crossing my fingers it doesn't get re-extended) and acquire a working visa through the company who hires me to teach. I understand that it might be hard for me to end up Medellin right away, but I certainly plan to check it out as soon as I am able to when I get there. I took your total of $2165 and applied the less 30% as a single guy and come up with $1515 all in. Thats $40 over just what I pay in the US just on my monthly RENT ALONE for a 1 bedroom in Wash DC!!
I was intrigued about the monthly pension contribution you added into your monthly expenses here. I wasn't expecting to see that. I was hoping you could elaborate on it and clarify what it is exactly. Are you paying into a public Colombian pension system, as if you are a permanent resident working there? I would love to learn more about this as a person who might live/work there for a long time in the near future.
Looking forward to your reply. Thanks and wishing you both continue to stay safe during these times. Keep the vids coming and I will continue to watch em!!

Is less expensive if you bring euros or dollars for money exchange. Be aware if the dollar tanks you won't be able to afford it. $8 thousand pesos for lunch is very expensive for the locals if your earnings are in colombian pesos. A Mc Donald's meal is about $ 25 thousand pesos and up which is super expensive in pesos. This video is very miss informative since everything is based in dollars, remember you are not living in the U.S you should actually mention everything in pesos and realize how expensive it is . The way you guys make it sound everyone is rich in Colombia since everything is so cheap. Not everything that shines is gold.
