Really good video and something i was needing personally. One the last mouse region setup of having a mouse region for the abilities. I don't know about Steam Deck, but on pc there's a setting to move a cursor to a specific location, so you could for example make a radial menu of cursor positions.

Man you've so many useful steam input videos, is there any chance you can put them in a dedicated playlist? I think I've found every single one useful, and don't want to risk missing one :)
I would use left track pad for the mini-map region by default, and then have it be for the unit selection region while the left paddle is held down. This would free up the right track pad for more natural movement throughout the rest of the screen.
You might want to reconsider using soft presses on your touchpad clicks: it lets you set the pressure sensitivity, which you've complained about before.
@NerdNest a suggestion for how I would improve this bc you kept losing your mouse for a little bit during that you could set a back button to make the mouse go to the centre of the screen
That's a great suggestion, however, I was losing the mouse because I was looking at the Deck through the tiny little screen on my camera. Interesting idea though.
Interesting. The start press and release press idea is something I wouldn't have thought about. And the mouse regions look like they'd probably be useful for DS/3DS emulation, using a trackpad for the touch screen.
Hey Bill, found out something you will like. You can assign labels for commands as well as Icons etc. while configuring controls in Desktop Mode. Hope they'll implement into Gaming Mode soon, but for now at least there is this workaround.
@@NerdNest You're presenting your configs in a youtube video but are to shy to share them? 😄No need for that understatement. Don't you think it would be a good idea of having NerdNest-Configs out there. Anyway I love your videos and will keep on.
Interesting. Are you not comfortable using the back buttons? In RTS games with my Steam Controller, I'll put shift on a back paddle so I can shift-click without awkwardly needed to toggle shift on and off. And you could easily have the right pad as a normal mouse most of the time and then hold a back button (or something) to mode shift or action layer the pad into the mouse region. Then you could mouse region select something off the bottom hotbar, shift click some more units, and issue an order all without lifting your thumb off the trackpad and reaching for other controls.
Fair enough. If there's one thing the Steam Controller config marketplace has taught me, it's that everyone's different when it comes to ideal game controls. Which is why Steam Input is great, and games that don't support even a bit of remapping or customisation are really missing a trick.
Awesome video, thanks! While I don't have the Deck yet, I would probably just use the right trackpad for general mouse movement rather than the right stick. Can't stand moving a cursor with a stick, or gyro. Can you assign a button to move the mouse to a specific point on the screen btw? For this game it doesn't look too useful, but for other RTSs where abilities are in static positions it might be great. If so, you could make an action layer on one of the back buttons and use the abxy and dpad buttons to move the cursor to positions where different abilities are and press them.
I'm using a keyboard and mouse on my steam deck, but how do I make the mouse bigger on steam deck? I can barely see the mouse when I'm clicking on something
What's the difference between an additional command and a sub command? You used a second command for the right bumper, but you could've used a sub command just as well right?
Yeah, usually you want to use sub commands for pressing multiple buttons as once, and extra commands for adding different ways to "trigger" the buttons. But, like you saw, using multiple (extra) commands with the same trigger (i.e. regular press) works too. Doesn't mean you should, but you also don't need to worry about it too much, as long as it works :)

I hope so, depends on if Armory Crate has these kind of customization. The coolest thing though is that the ROG Ally has Steam as well, so that means we can do a lot of customization through that. No trackpads though, which is a huge shame.
@@NerdNest No trackpads indeed, thats why we need smart people like you to show us handy shortcuts. I really liked the dual functions tho! Im sure there will also be ways on the ROG Ally to make everything more comfortable
Although I don't have a Deck yet, to me the difference seems to be this. You can set different ways to activate the same button for each Extra Command (for example at 8:48 in the video for L1 with Start Press and Release Press so a different action is performed depending on the way you use the input method. Sub Command on the other hand is always related to one of the Extra Commands so when you activate an Extra Command then the Sub Command under it also activates. For example, if the Extra Command has been set to keyboard input C then it could have a Sub Command for keyboard input Ctrl which would result in Ctrl+C action (a common shortcut for copy action on a keyboard). If you've ever used Steam Input before, for example with a Steam Controller, then Steam Deck's Extra Command seems to be equal to Activators (Regular Press, Double Press, Start Press, Release Press, etc.), and the Sub Command seems similar to how you'd be able to bind multiple keys on the same button (or activator), I guess. Overall I'm liking the Deck's way of doing it with Sub Commands better because it seems Sub Commands can also be configured judging from the gear icon but also because indentation makes it easy to see which Extra Command it relates to. The easiest way to think it about it is Extra Command = different ways to press a button, and Sub Command = what other keys are in use when the button for Extra Command is pressed.
