  • This painting tutorial shows how to paint an ocean wave in oils on a round canvas. The original seascape painting "Dancing in the Moonlight" measures 20 inches in diameter and is available for sale on EvaVolfSeascapes.etsy.com
    I used a reference photo of a breaking wave I took on a full moon night on Cape Hatteras in the Outer Banks, North Carolina.
    Here I offer an insight into my technique and hope that my artist-friends will find this painting time-lapse useful or at least entertaining.
    I used the following colors to create this ocean wave painting:
    titanium white, phthalo blue, ultramarine blue, viridian and indigo. I also used Liquin as a medium and my favorite Princeton Brushes (Filberts and a Liner from Catalyst series), a fan brush, two old round bristle brushes and a wide bristle brush for blending.
    This painting was created Alla Prima, in one sitting and took me about 3 hours to complete.
    Soundtrack: Shimmering Waves by the Euclidean Stairway.

    I know what you mean when you say “know when to stop”.
    I over did this one past the point of no return, but I like this pic so much I’m going to try to rescue it or start all over.
    I’m working with acrylics, quick drying doesn’t help.
    So thanks for a great tutorial Eva.😎🇦🇺🦘

    Love the blending of different blue shades , i find blending very tough in acrylic 😔, always messup with that .

    • @EvaVolf
      @EvaVolf  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      rajan rawool I know, that’s the reason I don’t prefer oils. But I heard there’re some mediums improving blending of acrylics, you should google them and give them a try

    • @missysimonelli
      @missysimonelli 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you tried the Open Acrylics from Golden? They are amazing-takes a little practice and blending with the regular heavy body to figure out what works for you, but worth a try! Or you can use the Open as is to mimic oil.

    • @rajanrawool
      @rajanrawool 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Acrylic does dry quickly so couldnt blend

    • @missysimonelli
      @missysimonelli 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      rajan rawool the Golden Open Acrylics stay wet for over 24 hrs(depending how much paint you layer). So, when you are working on your painting you have a lot more time to blend-

    I have studied your wok for a long time now ! Question I love painting the Ocean . I can paint any subject but not really interested in anything to paint but the Ocean my friends always ask can you paint anything else, do you get that? Thanks Al

    • @EvaVolf
      @EvaVolf  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, Al, all the time. I painted other subjects, horses, wildlife, florals. Now working with commissions I often paint boats, piers, palm trees, people on the beach, shells and everything beach related

    Beautiful (as are all your other paintings). I have one question, if I may. just switched from Galkyd medium to Liquin (to see whether I like that better) and I have a hard time to adjust. I see you "dipping" your brush in a small container. Is that pure Liquin? I hope you do not mind asking..... trying to learn from the experts !!

    • @EvaVolf
      @EvaVolf  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      LuckyDutchFishing yes, it’s pure Liquin, I also use Galkyd for this purpose and it’s absolutely fine, why did you switch? Both work great

    • @LuckyDutch2011
      @LuckyDutch2011 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@EvaVolf Thanks for the quick response. As a beginner, I wanted to see how different both mediums behaved. I used Galkyd in combination with Gamsol to thin it a little and wondered whether Liquin would give me the same "control" (better/worse). Going to experiment a little more with both and will eventually stick to the one I like best (or perhaps not.......)

    • @EvaVolf
      @EvaVolf  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      LuckyDutchFishing I recently tried Neo Megilp by Gamblin, it’s a good one, too. Increases transparency and flow, gives colors a satin gloss, dries at a moderate rate and remains workable for hours.
