Such a good project for us. We like it when media actually takes the time to test our products. Vital MX did a good job and took the time to compare all of our air intake options.
Been using your products since the early 70's. Started with a Bultaco Sherpa T 350 and your rad valve and X Wing are the first mods I'm making to my current bike...a KTM 250 SX. Always been a fanboy of Boyesen.
I put a rad valve on my 02 kx250 best mod ive ever done. Makes insane amounts low end chug power (enough to make 4 strokes jealous) and a very snappy throttle. I do mostly gnarly single track and this rad valve took a lot of clutch work out of riding/hill climbing, made it alot easier to pull out of low rpm's (even a gear high) and thats with going down on the rear sprocket instead of going up. DONT EVER FALL FOR THE V-FORCE HYPE.
Great great video, Ping. Been a fan of yours since you raced KTM Factory. I've had the great pleasure of meeting both Eyvind and Dag Boyesen at different times during my journalism career. Great people, father and son were Pro racers. Eyvind (Ivan) raced the GPs and Dag held an AMA Pro license for many years. I even did a test on the Rad Valve thru MX East when I had a column in that paper. EVERYTHING Ping says about the AMAZING Rad Valve is TRUE. A 2T is basically an advanced AIR PUMP and Eyvind, an engineer, figured out how to master the flow. 4T car engines use turbo chargers and super chargers to do the same. As a former product tester for regional MX magazines and papers I HIGHLY recommend the Boyesen Rad Valve. 💪🏾🔥💪🏻 Now go forth and BRAAAAP. 🤗😉😎
That’s cool you like Boyeson but Turbos in Valved engines has Zero Comparison to Rad Valves or reeds. I suggest watching an animated clip of how 2 strokes actually work and what reeds do. 2 strokes suck air and fuel thru the intake, past the reeds, the reeds flutter atomizing the fuel into the air. A turbo pushes air into an engine it doesn’t mix.
I have a yz250 and the best power mods was leaner jetting and a head recut to fix the horrible squish design to allow leaner jetting. It was less than $200 for the brass and head cut. This gave 5x the gain of a pipe at 2/3 of the cost. I tried a dep pipe too. It was a top end screamer. The rad valve was actually the only mod that I couldn't really tell if it did anything or not. Do not waste your money.
Sir, do you remember the leaner sizes of the jets you put on when you set your squish gap tighter? I'm going to do mine... Stock pilot jet is 50 and main jet is 178..
I would recommend these reeds to any one i had a 2016 yz 250 and i went through 2 sets of oem reeds in 6 months. Started to piss be off. I brought the first set of boyesen reeds and i had no more problems after that. Cant fault them! I cant be sure but it seemed like my bike ran slightly richer as i didnt touch the jetting but cant complain because it worked a dream
Lean both pilot and main jet a step or 2 and really see what the rad valve has to offer. Makes the power so much smoother and on demand. The rad valve turned my 02 kx250 into a woods monster!
Thank you so much for not saying v-force. I hate how everyone falls for the v-force hype and just because they have to lean the jetting out a little on the rad valve they think its too much of a hassle. Sucks for all the v-force tards tho
I could be wrong but I have the feeling they would be afraid of doing so. I think the results would be so insignificant on the Dyno that you would realize it's not worth your money. It would hurt their sales...
You really dont need the x wing. Get the rad valve for your year and JET IT CORRECTLY. Changes everything about how the bike performs. I have one on my 02 kx250 and i will never change the rad valve for anything!
This vid is AWESOME!!!!! The YZ is the best platform to build because there are endless aftermarket hop-ups available. More comparison tests please!! P.S. You ever take it off any sweet jumps?
nice guys appreciate your work ... hey hey if the YZ smokers are looking for huge (usable power ) gains i can recomend a euro pipe system DOMA ...back in 2007-08 i was put on to them by Tony Hatton and Brenden Radford who used to do all the CDR development for the two smoke here in AUS ... they are 1/3 or so fatter through the expansion chamber section of the pipe than FMF or PRO CIRCUIT options giving it astronomically more power down low and midrange ... they weren't a mass produced pipe had you track one down and they're still the same design as back then the power and more importantly the placement of the gains seen with the DOMA system is a case of WHY even BOTHER with only a minimal noticeable change with these other main stream systems ( i feel the US pipes lose bottom end power with slight over rev crisper top end feel )making it harder to ride for most as opposed to what i can only describe as a bottom end / mid range TORQUE MONSTER ....

On my 04 YZ 250, Mototassinari (spelling?) V3 and PC Pipe/silencer was a huge wake up. I wonder what a flywheel weight would do, It was suggested to me by a guy at Langston's place at the time.
rad valve, x wing, and pipe you've spent 600 bucks and still not close to an EG300 mod for about the same price.....the bike tested won't come close to my 300 with a PC pipe
you must have a great technical measurement tool in your body that you can feel the difference between that reeds. I trust a more scientific approach like a test bench .... This is like b...shit comparison.
There is no substitute to TRACK riding. No dyno can give you anything correct, might look nice on the chart. But lets be honest here.
