I worked with someone who actually was gluten intolerant. At the beginning of this whole fad, I asked her what she thought about it. There is one problem with that: The person you were talking to was delivering a message for "gluten-intolerant" people. It might have just been that the gluten-intolerant people gave up on getting something gluten free, and were able to do so because their issue with it was benign, rather than hold everyone up. This might not have been visible when talking to the person placing the order for everyone, since messengers seldom ever convey the message 100% as it was intended, or felt, as is apparent from the game of telephone or Chinese whispers.
I deal with the same problem trying to avoid chemical additives, GMOs, vegetable oils, corn syrup, refined sugars, and other bad stuff in food. There is just too much to consider, and I very infrequently have my meals the ideal way. Heck, I learned that olive oil adulterated 50% with vegetable oils like cottonseed and safflower can still pass as olive oil without any additional labeling here in America. The problem is that a perfect meal is so maddeningly impossible to consistently and affordably get, that sometimes, after trying hard, you just have to shrug your shoulders and tell yourself "It's better than starving" and eat what is less than ideal to your standards.
Note: This is an example you don't have to read, but to add perspective to this problem:
One time I was part of a camp group, and the meals were provided for everyone with the fee. But they were cheap and crappy. Not only were they very unsatisfying for a hard day out in the heat (The portion sizes were small and most of the time you couldn't even go for seconds), but they were almost entirely refined, processed foods, especially refined carbs and corn syrup, loaded with synthetic additives, vegetable oils, etc. and the produce that was available was never organic, and sometimes came canned, and the condiments to go with them were just as bad. I lost my vigor on those foods compared to before camp despite the exercise, but I had to get greedy in order to not starve, and at one point got so desperate I ate 2 tiny packets of peanut M&Ms to help satisfy my protein needs a little more (Since the meals were mostly refined carbs). It was way, way below standards for me, and my eczema got so unbearable that week it kept me up at night (When before camp it was very well under control, even in the heat). But I had to give up standards to avoid starving. So maybe the gluten-intolerant person just gave up on his standards for a bit so everyone could move on. I know I had to.

groot mcgroot Are you sure it's explicitly wheat? Is it possible that you felt better because you were paying more attention to your diet and just generally eating healthier?
Try this: go back to your old diet and follow it exactly but remove all wheat products. Then try whatever diet you're currently following but include wheat. See what changes you notice.
All that aside, though, the placebo effect (and it's opposite, the nocebo effect) are powerful things. If you think something's going to make you feel better, there is a very good chance that it will.

Put pressure on the grain industry to not poision our food. People are not gluten intolerant just poison intolerant. It is the wheat with the added glyosphate that dries out the GMO wheat and non-organic wheat for processing. My 7 year old daughter is allergic to wheat (not intolerant, allergic).
If she is exposed to wheat, she gets large red hives all over her body and starts to wheeze.
We can't even cook wheat pasta in our house because the steam makes her wheeze.
We have to carry an EpiPen around with us because of this - it's a dangerous condition.
it REALLY makes me angry when hipsters say that they are 'allergic' to wheat or gluten just because they have chosen not to eat it.
Reading on forums etc, these people who have made a decision to avoid wheat often pretend to have an allergy so that people will take them seriously.
All this does is further alienate people with genuine wheat allergy, and cause restaurants etc to take wheat allergy less seriously.
A lot of people don't understand that wheat allergy is a real thing, and that it can be life threatening.
I don't care about your quack medical beliefs or food phobias, you stupid fucking hipsters.
Stop pretending you have an allergy, you are making the world more dangerous for people with real medical conditions.

James Beat Yes! I have celiac disease (blood and biopsy diagnosed) which is NOT an allergy. It is an autoimmune disorder. Every time I hear someone say they are “allergic” to gluten, I cringe. Wheat allergy is very, very real. Gluten allergy DOES NOT EXIST. I would much prefer to have Celiac than a wheat allergy, as horrible as it is at times. I get very frustrated with the whole trend because I feel like restaurants are so used to dealing with people who don’t actually have a problem with it, they might take less care with my food.

Actually, my daughter's allergy doctor told me that gluten is most likely the protein that is responsible for her wheat allergy, so you definitely can have a genuine allergy to gluten
Genuine gluten allergy is extremely rare though.
I'm sure that most people who claim to have a gluten allergy are just hipsters who want people to take their fad seriously.
If my daughter eats food containing wheat, the reaction is unmistakable.
She gets large red welts all over her body about 45 minutes after eating it.
We can't cook wheat pasta in the house because the steam makes her wheeze.
She was allergic to milk too, but thankfully she grew out of it.
Her numbers for wheat are so high that the doctors say she will most likely always be allergic to it.
Here's the difference between real allergies and food fads - I would give anything to be able to give my daughter a real birthday cake or send her to school with sandwiches.
We don't like the fact that she has a wheat allergy, and nor does she.
She doesn't feel special, she feels left out, despite our best efforts to give her a normal life.

lmao. I eat gluten and get violently ill (diarrhea, nausea, VERY painful cramps, bloating) and get rashes on my neck and scalp. Even a small amount makes me break out in rashes. This has happened since I was a baby. Going to tell a baby that they're just overreacting? Ignorant. There's celiac disease, there's gluten allergies, then there's gluten sensitives.. These are all REAL and backed by science. Then there's people that choose to give it up for health reasons, faster digestion etc. THAT'S OKAY TOO. Why do you have to be a cunt just because people can't/don't want to eat gluten? Mind your own fucking business, assholes.

He brought me the cheese on some bread... wtf, really? We just had a conversation about how I couldn't eat wheat or bread products and you bring me a dish with bread. Therefore, my boyfriend and all future family cannot prepare gluten in my kitchen and with my cookware… 😕 My celiac friends also have to have a completely gluten-free kitchen too. Super sucks because you can’t eat at friends’ houses or food others prepare. But, hey, I also like being alive and having all my intestines intact… 🤷‍♀️

As a celiac, I have so many issues with people who go gluten free for fun. I have a lot of friends and family members that go gluten free because it's a fun little diet and they constantly tell me how amazing it is and how much weight they lost. Sure enough, it's not the gluten-free diet that helps them its what they end up eating more of and eating less of. Before these fad dieters go GF they usually eat a ton of junk food and little to no fruits and veggies. They always go out to eat and rarely cook at home. After they go GF they tend to eat more veggies, cook at home more, eat out less (due to the sheer lack of GF restaurants). So what changes in their diet isn't leaving out gluten but more becoming aware of what they eat. This ends up becoming toxic for us because no one is paying attention to cross contamination and the increase in processed GF foods (which end up defeating the entire health purpose of going GF).

It bugs me when people who have eaten gluten for all their life suddenly go “Im gLuTEn inTolERanT!” It’s so frustrating because they say things like “You’re so lucky that you can’t have gluten!”, things among that line. I’m also lactose intolerant and have severe digestive problems and people are so quick to say I’m faking it for attention, but if I could I’d eat gluten in a heartbeat. People always think that since I’m vegan I say I’m lactose intolerant so they don’t put dairy in my food but it’s because I legitimately cannot have gluten or dairy.

As someone who works on a kitchen and spend almost a year at a hotel's bakery... these people were like spawns of Satan to me, Every time we had a "gluten free" order, internally cried for being part of the creation of such empty abominations. Since gluten intolerant have severe reactions everytime we got an order for gluten free bread of cake we had to go to another place away from the flour, desinfect table and utensils with chemicals and the dishwasher to eliminate any trace of gluten possible. Then proceed to prepare it and bake on separated oven.
Worst thing, 97% percent were this kind of douches who weren't gluten intolerant at all, they were very ungrateful and rude. The only good thing was talk with the ACTUAL gluten intolerant they usually were so nice! And asked very kindly, they understood the system ordering in the morning to get their bread or cakes done once they arrived for dinner instead of fucking up the whole place because they wanted it in five minutes or less.

OcioCamaraMx I worked in a bakery for a while and we sold a gluten free chocolate cake. We only had about 2-4 a day because they weren’t too common to order, but people who insisted on their “gluten intolerance” would never want it - they’d order our cheese cake (which wasn’t gluten free. A topping for decoration contained gluten). They said it was “no big deal”.
When I told someone with a nut, egg, or dairy allergy (or actual gluten intolerance) that an item contained or may contain one of those ingredients, they’d immediately change their mind and ask for something else. Why these people would be an exception is beyond me...

      @Amcsae 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

There are levels of sensitivity. I began showing signs of intolerance a little over a year ago, but my mom has been severely intolerant for about 12 years. When I started showing signs, I knew I had to give up gluten, but don't (yet) have the full effects. For example, I can still tolerate Kellogg's Rice Krispies (made with malt flavor, a barley product). That doesn't mean I can just have a normal slice of cake or pizza. At Thanksgiving I accidentally forgot that gravy has a little flour in it, and got mildly sick the next day, but my mom would have been sick for well over a week if she'd messed up like that.

    • @tyslink

lol, this is funny because I have celiac disease and I will ask the server if they have a GF menu, then immediately order a beer, but ONLY if certain beers are on hand. I try to stick to coors light as I've heard from a few sources that it's essentially gluten free (this blog even tests beers for gluten and posts the results gluteninbeer.blogspot.com/2014/02/coors-light.html). Having a few coors lights doesn't seem to affect me, but if I eat food containing gluten I can definitely feel it pretty quickly. So, while I get your point at humor (I'm guessing many people that claim to be gluten intolerant are full of BS) it doesn't mean a beer is out of the question.
