- My tribute to Cliff Branch. One of the greatest deep threats in NFL History. Set indoor world record with a 10.0 in the 100 meters in 1972 and ran a 9.2 100 yard dash outdoors. Clocked at 4.2 in the 40 yard dash on grass according to Raider personnel. Selected to 4 First Team All Pro's and 4 Pro Bowls. And they were all consecutive. Dominant for at least a 4 year span.
Has better stats than Lynn Swan and is long over due to be in the Hall of Fame. No 1 in post season receptions (73) and yards (1279) when he retired. Now in 3rd place since HOF Jerry Rice and HOF Micheal Irvin went past him. Played on 3 superbowl winning teams (XI, XV, XVIII).
He played 6 season before the rule changes of 1978 with the 5 yard chuck rule. So before that it was a mugging up until the point the ball was thrown. And only weighing about 170 lbs, played until 1985. Excelled no matter who the QB was.

The highlight from the Monday night game against New Orleans when the Raiders came from 28-7 to win 42-35 will always be one of my favorite plays by Cliff Branch, He needs to be in Canton now!!

Should have been in the HOF 30 years ago. Branch was the most feared WR of his time and maybe of all time. In 11 of his 14 seasons the Raiders made the playoffs. After he retired Al Davis spent the next 25 years trying to find the next Cliff Branch. He never could
I had the honor of having dinner with Mr. Branch, and Stephan Paige (WR Chiefs) about 15 years ago. Mr. Branch was the most gracious, polite and entertaining gentleman you could ever meet. He took time to sign autographs, take pictures and talk to folks in the middle of his dinner. I sat there between Mr. Branch and Mr. Paige, and listened to some of the coolest stories of behind the scenes moments in the NFL. I still have the pictures and autograph to prove it!!! RIP Mr. Branch, you are the GOAT!

Why Is Cliff Branch Not In The Hall Of Fame? The Man Has 3 Super Bowl Rings!
You know a guy should be in the HOF when it takes Jerry Rice to break his post-season reception and yardage marks.
I remember sensing how fast he was, you could just tell even on routine plays in which he wasn't involved. Fastest player in the AFC for sure. Over in the NFC was Mel Gray, likely the fastest over there. They were probably about even. Cliff was one of the best pure deep threats of his day; DBs must have feared him. Play after play if he got a step on anyone, he was gone. He was great in the 40 too: not like a lot of great 100 sprinters who were actually a bit slow in the first half. Most track guys do not transition to football, but he did, learning the craft of getting open and catching the ball and taking hits.
I remember when Arena Football briefly manifested on TV years ago during the offseason. I turned a game on. Lo and behold, Cliff Branch was scoring touchdowns and dominating games. He must have been in his mid 40's. What a talent! No question he should be in HOF.
he's obviously the best player not in the hall of fame. 15 years ago there was a backlog of players, and one might have said "what about james lofton, or chris doleman"? most of the greats are in now. all that are as good as branch at this point are some fine short-career players like tony boselli or sterling sharpe. branch was just awesome, and since both his peers and the fans know that, i dont get how he is still absent from the hof. the argument that " stats for receivers from the period usually dont meet hof standards", falls flat because theyve enshrined drew pearson, and harold carmichael recently. they dont compare favorably to branch, and in my opinion, neither does belitnikoff, alworth, paul warfield, raymond berry, or most of the receivers enshrined from the 1960s and 70s. branch was the best receiver in football for 3-4 years, and the fastest for more like 10 years.

Clifford Branch was one of the best receivers during his time and should be in the hall. Never seen anyone faster.

Yes, Cliff should have been enshrined years ago. During his first training camp Branch was dropping a lot of passes. Fred Biletnikoff told Madden that he could solve that problem. Fred told Cliff to slow down just a bit and run more smoothly because when he was running flat out, then his head would bounce and his eyes would have trouble tracking the ball. Cliff listened to Fred and the rest is history. There's a reason that the top reciever in college football is awarded the Biletnikoff trophy. Fred had the best pair of hands I've ever seen; with or without stickum. Welcome to the 2022 Hall of Fame Cliff Branch you earned and deserved it & R.I.P. #21!

mmmmaaaannnn... I met Tatum... I met Atkinson... I met Dr. Death Skip Thomas and Willie Brown... I met John Vella at his card shop in Castro Valley... I lived across the street from big Herb McMath and played outside with his son and his pit bull... I even met Al Davis walking thru the Oakland Coliseum... But I NEVER got to meet my very first favorite player Cliff Branch... DAMMIT!!! Well at least I have a signed jersey and photo to hand in my man cave... But I would have LOVED to talk some ball with Cliff... RIP homeboy...

Dam he was putting moves on my steelers and we had one of the top defenses at the time yet he knew what he could do all ball players studied very well at that time we living in some hard times its great to see what utube can offer as we stay on our homes or apts staying relaxed thanks again i injoy this
0:26 he ran a 4.2 on this play in the SB and he had to plant and stop and accelerate and he did it like no other. Most guys cant run stop and then go CLIFF WAS A CHEETAH LIKE NO OTHER.

I heard a story about how John Madden told Cliff to hand the ball to the ref after a touchdown so he wouldn't piss off the other team and possibly get hurt in retaliation since he was so small. Good advice.

No he clocked a 4.12 as his fastest time i am from Oakland i know the stories. He also ran a 10 flat 100 meters and couldve chose sprinting. HE WAS FASTER THAN D GREEN
