- My tribute to one of the wildest and craziest players of all time. After wearing out his welcome with 3 other teams, he joins the Oakland Radiers as his 4th team in 4 years. Injuries forced the Raiders to switch to a 3-4 defense and having the 6-8, 300lb Matuszak allowed for this switch in 1976. Starting DE in Superbowl XI and XV.
Far too many crazy stories to list them all. He played hard but partied harder. When he OD'd in KC, the Coach drove him to the hospital and pounded on his chest to revive him. He got in an altercation with Matt Millen on the team plane, fighting Terry Robiskie for no real reason, reporters loved him because he spoke the truth, massive drug and alcohol problems, DWI's, shooting guns at stop signs, picking up women two at a time in bars, you name it.
He reminds me a lot of Jim Morrison of the Doors. I think if Jim Morrison was a football player, he would be John Matuszak just based on their mannerisms and their ability to surround themeselves with people too afraid to say "no" to them or enable them to keep doing wrong.

The Raiders saved his career and the Tooz responded by becoming a major force in helping the Raiders win Super Bowl XI and XV.
I remember watching him play, he was absolutely an excellent player. Was the Golden years of NFL, when football was real football. Also was great in North Dallas Forty.
Born in '65, grew up watching real football in the 70's / 'early' 80's. Miss those days! Can't tolerate this modern crap. Loved the Raiders and Bears. I actually got an autographed picture from Dick Butkus when he still played. I still have that picture hanging on the wall to this very day!
Met this cat in 1981in Oakland Hills, I am 6'4" and when he answered the door at 9am, I am certainly glad he was in a good mood!
The Tooz was one of those players nobody wanted and the Raiders won Super Bowls with, 2 to be exact, One of the strongest men to ever step on a football field, John Matuszak was a beast. I loved him in North Dallas Forty.
👍❤, wished he stuck around when Alzado came. That point of him becoming somebody of the Raiders ====is that 'echoed' latest Raiders Reclamation Project that we were famous for ....and wished that bitch ass bandwagon ALL Madden documentary mentioned that of his his/our history.

Brings back memories of the Raiders. I enjoyed John Madden’s book. He was literary the only coach who could lead a team of those men. From the Tooz, to Kick’Em Ted Hendrix, and on and on.
Would have loved to see him playing alongside Big Ben Davidson. Two 6’8” crazy giants together.
The Stork was another #83 who could do the job.
I would have loved to have seen him, Alzado, and Howie Long all at the same time in the lineup.
Someone would have died during the game.
Or he could had stayed around till Alzado came too
There's a whole football career's duration of difference in age between Tooz and Davidson

Came on here after watching Matusak in "Caveman!" At 5am, and no, I am not snorting coke, wish I was then I'd have an excuse. Wow, thought this was bad in 81' when I was 9.

Yeah, I never saw that Payton hit, we only saw his highlights, he got stuffed.

There are more TH-cam insightful story clips of Raiders (glory years Raiders) than any other team (HATE that Millennial dufuss bandwagon generation)....GREAT to here how he put NOT just 2hrs at children hospital but hours at it....wished he stayed around when Alzado came ----Hollywood would had had a script some years later.

I met big jon at a summer camp for burned children when I was 8 years old. All the other kids knew him from the goonies. I hadn't even seen the movie. I knew him because I am a huge Raiders fan. He got a kick out of it because I was the only one who wanted to talk about football and how I was going to play for the Raiders just like him. He was great and he posed flexing with 3 kids hanging from each arm.

That line was very underrated and somehow got burried in the present when it is more relevant than ever.

John Matuszak was a class act. Led the Raiders to two Super Bowl 🏈 appearances. He retired after the strike shortened 1982 season and got into acting and personal appearances. He appeared in North Dallas 40 as a football player, and the movie was an exposé on the seamy side of professional football. Sadly, he passed away at the age of 37.
Tooz was the 1st player selected in the 1972 or 73 Draft. 1980 was his finest season and he should have been selected to the Pro Bowl
There was only one Tooz! Miss the old Oakland Raiders and their brand of football!
I suggest that the Tooze fans watch the movie Ice Pirates because he had a great role in that movie and it's a great comedy too. A true 80's classic

There's a great episode of "Hunter" (maybe 1986) where he fights Fred Dryer who's a mere 6'6".
And Dryer played for the Giants and Rams too

Remember #90 Willie Jones & 86 Cedrick Hardman? The Raiders desperately need 2 more pass rush specialist like them. Al Davis once told us in a 2007 draft meeting that in order to win the Super Bowl you must have at least one Elite Pass Rusher and the ability to consistently pressure the QB with your Base Def 4 man rush. Ironically the two teams that led the NFL in sacks this year are both hosting the Conference Championship Games this weekend. Al Davis loved Charles Haley. He tried trading for him on multiple occasions.

Kenny Stabler said that when Matuszak joined the Raiders, the 1st thing he asked Stabler was " do you know where I can buy a gun?"
I read somewhere that his first day he did like a primal war scream as he ran onto the field and Madden looked discouraged and Ted Hendricks told Madden "what difference does one more make?"

There was a good story where the Hell's Angels beat up Phil Villapiano, and then Jack Tatum and Matuszak had to be talked out of going after the Hell's Angels by coaches and players. Not saying they would have won but still that was what you were playing against back then.
Or they would fit in with him.

John Matuzak OL Toolz was underrated 1 of most physical Defense linemen in the game him and Alzado would have made a mean pair also with Davidson, Sistrunk, Long , Townsend to name a few

Tooz also played for Chiefs before going to Raiders.
The Oilers drafted him #1 overall and then traded him after one season. Boy the league was different back then.
He signed with the World Football League and was trying to play for the NFL and WFL at the same time so the Oilers just got fed up and traded him. Got Curley Cupp and a 1st round pick from the Chief's out of the deal so they made out pretty good considering. Back when the draft was a crap shoot and there were 17 rounds, no unrestricted free agency, def a different league.
@@UncleJakesRaidersVideos What, did KC talk him out of the WFL? And how good was he exactly? He played before my time. Is he a legendary character and that's why we know about him? Or was he actually a top player? I envision him as a ham and egger with a wild personality.
@@fearthemunky1 Just before my time as well but I think the NFL filed an injunction since he was under contract with the NFL. Might be the WFL found a loophole and tried it out. It was back when NFL players made far less on average vs today and upstart leagues would offer much bigger contracts to get name players.
As a player, from what I can gather, hit or miss on the field but when fired up you still have to deal with an athletic and menacing 6'8" 280+ lb man. So more of a tease I guess but Al Davis loved size and speed and Intimidation so he was a perfect "Raider."
@@fearthemunky1 I’m a Steeler guy but he was my fav football player. In terms of how he will go down as a player I would say could have been an all time great based on skill but his excessive partying made him into a semi bust with a side of success. Not many offensive lineman and certainly not blocking running backs could handle him, I mean he was essentially a bigger version of Alzado.
To me he was kind of like an 80’s Metal band that had their first album be a runaway hit, then started partying and with each album they got worse and worse. Just way too many nights partying as if he was a just even a little bit better about taking care of his massive frame he would have been unstoppable.

It's hard to reconcile all this praise of him on the field with the fact that he periodically beat people up, including one poor guy in a pickup basketball game. Roid and alcohol rage, probably, but still anti social behavior.

I've read that his injuries, especially his back, led to a lot of his drug abuse issues. His O.W. Shaddock character, along with his buddy Joe Bob Purdy, in North Dallas 40 might have been a decent composite of the real man!

Apparently when he was at the University of Tampa he started fooling around with a certain wrestler's girlfriend. This particular wrestler took this quite badly and proceeded to clean his clock. That wrestler was Dick Slater a true tough guy.

With the greatest of respect I would suggest that you are missing a wonderful opportunity to overlay the movie with some salient points about the rather remarkable John Matuszak.
You wrote an excellent minibiography that would make a brilliant voice overlay.
I know that I am just an old fart but it does seem to me that music has its place and time. It 's just that I think that sports videos are not that place.

@@IdeasExchange1 that and when I made it like 10 plus years ago was back when TH-cam would take videos down for using basically any music so the choices were limited. Plus I think most of that footage I recorded playing a DVD on a laptop and recording the screen with a droid x camera so the fact audio was even picked up was a win lol. Also TH-cam compresses what you upload so sometimes that makes the music / audio less separated. Even my recent ones sounded clear until uploaded and then it gets kind of blurred. But for free and using free software I understand it won't be perfect but back in 2010 it was a crap shoot for sure.

No Lyle was a Bronco till about 80, then Browns. Wasn't a Raider till 83 ish.
