Oh that opening synthesizer sound!!! Fun Fact. Up here in Ontario Canada...City TV's Fashion TV took this for their opening. I still remember hearing that total 80's sound every time I hear this song!! Glad you two got to hear this song!! :)

We were obsessed with Obsession! This song came out of nowhere and despite the silliiness of the video-- it represented the cheesiest of Hollywood as though the singers were aspiring actors - - we were thrilled anyway because fortunately this was made during the height of MTV and all we cared about was a visual to go with the song. It was a huge hit and has become a cult classic representing the 80s
You nailed it Lex in observing the cool nonchalance of those 80's dance moves in this video and others ( Depeche Mode comes to mind.) Everyone just did their own thing back then without much regard for the "peanut gallery." It was a strange and wonderfully awkward time!
There’s a story the male singer told, he was working his job as a house painter when this video came on tv the first time. He heard it from the the TV from the living room of the house. So he knocked on the door and asked if he could come in. He’d never seen the video.
I always thought of this as a song that transcended its genre. Yes, it's a great example of new wave synthpop, but you could re-record this as a rock song, disco song, punk song, whatever, and it would still be a great tune. It's just a fantastic melody and set of hooks. The album version of this song is about a minute longer and has a blistering guitar solo.
Oh wow, I've had this song on my Playlist for many years and didn't realize there was a longer version, thanks. I agree with your analysis of the song too.

We used to cover this. And....our bass player played the bass part...........it's a synth sequencer. And he was a guitar player at the time. We forced him to play bass.
This is such a cool song, it reached the top 10 in South Africa in 1985 as well as their 1986 song I Engineer peaked at no. 4 (which is in my top 10 all time 80's track), both songs are on my playlist when driving to and from work. Astrid is so gorgeous.

Oh to be a kid in the 80’s and see that the WWF’s Main Event was on instead of Saturday Night Live.
