Amen! I was living my best life in 1987 at 18 years old as a club kid in an rave dance club. Not a care in the world! I’d go back in a heartbeat if I could!
I was an 80s teenager. MTV shaped us. Music videos were the ultimate form of expression for artists who not only had unique sounds but visually compelling ways to present their music. I think it ultimately taught us Gen X kids to be creative, resourceful and that it's cool to be weird.
Ah yes, Gen X - we of the most-maligned generation at the time, the most-overlooked and dismissed one now. As far as I'm concerned, we're still the cool kids, ha.
It's called the 80s excess. I graduated in 84 and we indulged in all the music , the partying, the Friday night cruising and just the freedom that we had to experience everything. And our parents knew nothing about it.
This song was HUGE in the 80s. That keyboard riff was everything but the whole song was good. You could not help but sing along. The 80s was the BEST decade of music because it was all over the place and there was something for everyone. It was pretty great across the board.
Yeah, made huge by the pre-teen Gen X'rs. Was a crap bubblegum pop song then, is now. A catchy beat is easy to achieve, but a catchy beat does not a good or great song make.
Many musical genres everywhere with their fandom. Too much variety, and MTV played music videos 24 hrs a day. Every friday, they would have a "Top 20 video Countdown" at around 7pm eastern time. A re-run the next day in case you missed it.
The 80's : A decade that all the social problems today were solved. There was all kinds of people, Punks, heavies, preps, rappers. many men painted their faces like women, Gay, straight, any race etc... What I'm trying to say is that no one care how people look, everyone was having fun. Diversity was our union.
Right. We've been there and done that. All future generations have to do is look to the 80s. We were not extreme like kids today. So dramatic. We were sensible. We said discrimination is wrong and we changed mindsets by showing them not yelling at them or forcing insanity on them. We stopped listening to both sides and did what was right!
A new wave group during the 80's that I really liked was Missing Persons. Their lead singer Dale Bozzio was the 'original' Lady GaGa in my opinion. 'Mental Hopscotch' and 'Destination Unknown' are two of their biggest hits.
Hey Rob Squad! Long comment, and you probably won't read it, but here goes, btw I'm a Fellow Okie living in dumb ol' Kansas (no offense to any Kansans who might inadvertently come across this comment)- I absolutely love your shows 💖 - So here's you a good 80's story- my little sis and I shared a room, at night we were allowed to have classical music or gospel playing on a little boom box to go to sleep to- but as soon as my sister went to sleep (she was a tattler, so I would have never did this if she was awake) I took the stereo and my flash light and hid under the covers with the music turned way down and I listened to the radio- read contraband books (Stephen King, V.C. Andrews, romance novels) and watched the clock (I tried to stay up no later than 2 a.m.- sometimes I would sneak up and watch tv too).- this was from ages 8 to 12 (82-86) and I absorbed everything from the local stations- and it didn't matter what "genre" it was- late night they had The Dr. Demento Show (I am a die hard Weird Al fan) and The Beatle Years- During the day Run DMC, Rod Stuart, Wham, Journey, Cyndi Lauper and Men at Work all played back to back- did my school work suffer from staying up night after night? Probably. Would I do it again? In a heartbeat! Now my dad didn't really care what us kids were listening to but my mom didn't like us listening to Madonna or heavy metal (Christian reasons)- but everywhere you went there was music- (school especially) or tv which was always on MTV or TNN (the Nashville network, I listened to country, too) and the videos were just the normal way we got our music -there was a show called KIDS Incorporated that we watched every Saturday morning and they would sing all the popular songs- life was just noisy and littered with song snippets all over the place, and kids spent time outside and would play their radios- and skate, hula hoop, swim, mow, wash cars, etc- to songs- like who hula hoops to songs now days? In a Farris Bueller-like twist of fate, my older brother got a Walkman and I got roller skates, like how do you not get a Walkman with a pair of roller skates??? (a great injustice was done to me the Christmas of 1987- Lol ) - it was very different from now with everyone having their own separate music- when they're in the same room or in the same car. No kids really thought anything was weird about the artsy fartsy videos or music, The Don't Come Around Here No More video by Tom Petty was a real flip out- I really was fascinated by the video for White Wedding by Billy Idol - Girls Just Want to Have Fun by Cyndi Lauper and Thriller were super big- also everyone thought Boy George was gay because he wore make up - speaking of which, this is was something a lot of us did- try to guess if a male artist was gay or not, (yes it's a weird past time for 10 yr old girls to engage in, but times were different) - back to the videos, unless being unclothed was somehow involved and even then it was just and off-handed thing, like "That's different," (In Careless Whisper the girl is in a towel I think, not to mention the Girls, Girls, Girls video and Madonna wore crop tops with her underwear on the outside, like all the time) most adults just accepted the weirdness of videos- and Pee Wee Herman, and He Man and Smurfs - the 80's was just a colorful hodge podge of awesomeness- I think a lot of people were more free back then, like most of the parents who grew up in the 50's and 60's were peace, love and free to be you and me, basically, (Baby Boomers) but there were rules - also they didn't helicopter their kids or always guard what their kids had access to, like they do today- I see in a lot of the comments people talking about being afraid of nuclear war, but it seemed in my little corner of the world we were more or less just busy living life and it was an abstract thing that still seems unreal to me- even though I watched Red Dawn when it came out- later my mom told me she grew up scared of nuclear war and didn't want us growing up with that hanging over our heads- so she didn't talk about it much but we watched the news and went to school- I guess it just didn't capture my attention from being absolutely petrified of tornadoes- I have never seen The Day After- a made-for-tv movie which was a cultural phenomenon about what would happen if there was a nuclear attack- but I never heard of it until I was watching some 80's nostalgia show and they talked about it on that --so anyways that's my 80's story- thanks if you read it all- you'll be alright 😉
I was born in 1964, love my 60s, 70s, and 80s music, and I'm a TOTAL 80s GIRL! I graduated in 1982, so this was my late teens and early twenty's days. These were the days when we could get into clubs and DANCE OUR ASS OFF!! This is one of my favorite dance songs, but I never and I really couldn't tell you if any of my friends nit-picked it apart like y'all did. That's not what we did with our music...yeah some listened closely to the words, but when we were young back then, we just wanted to sing and dance. I hit the clubs every Friday after work then again on Saturdays...dressed in my 80s best with Aqua Net stuffed in my purse to make sure my "big hair" didn't fall by the end of the night...cause we had to hit the Denny's or any all night breakfast places to eat after drinking so much and watch the front door to see who was coming and meet new people. THE 80s WAS A BLAST and I'd live it all again if I could!! This is a BANGER SONG...and a great dance song...even great for nights at the roller skating rink!!
Yes, yes, and yes! We are the same age, and I couldn't have described it better (Aqua Net and all) lol. I'd go back in a second too. I would actually like to go back to the early/mid 70's and start there before landing permanently in the 80's 😊 If only ...
Hell yeah I was just saying in a big ass comment of my own how great the '80s were. I was born in 78 though. So I viewed the '80s through much different set of eyes than those of people a little older than me like yourself. The '80s were amazing though absolutely
Yup!!! That's the 80s right there in a nutshell! Clubs, clubs, and more clubs!!! Dancing our asses off all night!!! What a time to be alive and young!!!!! I feel sorry for the later generations who never had what we had!!!!
The 80's, when a whole generation took off the blinkers, turned up the volume and the colour, and just went for it! Last generation of going out with friends to hang out anywhere and everywhere, flipping from one music style to another as you discovered something else new and exciting. It literally was the decade that most resembled watching the Wizard of Oz when it flipped from black and white to technicolour!!
I graduated in 1986 so I "became of age" during this time. Experimental is a good word for the 80's. Not just music but fashion and hair too. My boyfriend at the time had longer, and bigger hair than I did and I heard his father say "can't tell who's who from the back". Haha I have lots of great memories! The Gen-X generation were known as latchkey kids because most of our parents worked and there really wasn't any day care to speak of. We considered ourselves feral. Lol We would be out until dinner time or later and our parents never really knew where we were. Or they would drop us off at the mall or six flags (until one of us got a car). No cell phones or any way to be tracked down, we were free!
I was a Gen-X latch key kid. I did have older siblings but they were usually out with their friends so when I got out of school I walked home, made myself a snack, and watched cartoons until my mom came home around 5:30.
An '86er here as well! We are BY FAR the most "80s" of all since we tured 13 in '81 and 21 in '89. Middle, high school and College ALL IN THE 80s! Best time EVER!!!!!
FAVOURITE MEMORY THAT CAPTURES MY TEENAGE 80’s Senior high Prom. OMG this took me right back!! Oh we thought we were cool. I couldn’t sit up in the Limo because my hair was so big. I had to lean forward almost to my knees because it was about 12” tall, black and Bright Blue, a bleached white braided, ultra thin “rats tail” hanging from the bottom of the mullet, in the nape of my neck, and a bright blue double breasted suit, and BAGGY, high waist MC Hammer pants. Oh what a decade to be young and free and living in the Rich Western world
loved this song as an 80s teen. used to do my homework with MTV playing in the background ... ok, i did practically everything with MTV playing in the background back then. 😁
As someone who spent the first half of the 80s as a kid and the second half as a teen, I can tell you...it was a fun decade during which to grow up. In some ways, the 80s were the best of times.
the 80s ushered out disco...introduced power pop and alt pop and synth pop...began the new wave of British Heavy Metal and metal revival ... the arrival of rap as a big time commodity...then pop/glam/hair metal - which led to the backlash that was grunge in the 90s
Definition of the 80s right here! Please check out "Situation" by Yaz/Yazoo. Amber will love all the "sound effects" used throughout that banger. Also, "Tainted Love (Where Did Our Love Go)" Full Version by Soft Cell. Love you guys so much, keep smiling!! 🎶😎🎶 edited to *Yaz/Yazoo* - Originally the band was "Yazoo" but later they had to change it to "Yaz" in the North American market. Albums and singles can be found under *both* names, but I came to know the band as "Yaz" when I first heard "Situation" on the radio as a kid and was introduced to the band and their history and members, like the talented Alison Moyet. Just saying, I'm aware of *both* names and majority of fans know the band as Yazoo. It's all good! 💛😉👍
Memories of the 80s. Oh my gosh, MTV, princess phones, bright clothes, big hair, colorful makeup, going to the Victory (a historic theater turned into an under 21 club with a disco style light-up floor), getting to see the video to Thriller for the first time at that same club, watching HBO and Cinemax when you weren't supposed to, lol...
MTV gave bands that were still trying to figure out who they were musically become stars. An interesting look plus a unique sound were all a struggling band needed. And each new band that made it inspired others to keep experimenting. Thus a whole decade full of surprises. Bravo for noticing.
80's Erasure, Bronski Beat (J will love Jimmy Somerville's voice), Communards, Yazoo, Howard Jones, Nick Kershaw... sooo many brilkiant tracks from all.
In the early 80s, synthesisers suddenly became affordable and many bands based their sound on them. Also, many of the pop culture icons were evolving such as Terminator, Aliens, Rambo, Packman etc that we still see today. So it was a very memorable time.
I remember when this song&video arrived and I remember how awesome it was. I am so old. I would add that this song and ReFlex’s “Politics of Dancing” were truly indicative of ‘80s music in that they were the perfect mix of rock and dance.
My favorite memories from the 80s was always in the summertime. Going to camp, watching wrestling whether it was WCW/NWA, WWF, world class, etc. going to the flea market to collect comic books, particularly Marvel comics and especially Spider-Man, among other things.
This song was so iconic not for the lyrics but for the music the riffs and the synthline and the music were used in nearly EVERY sports stadium and movie in some form in the 80s even commercials were featuring it, when someone talks about the music of their childhood this songs music is what they mean
I was definitely obsessed with “Obsession”! Loved the 80’s. Another great song is “I Know There’s Something Going On” by Frida who was one of the lead singers of ABBA.
The 80s were the middle of the cold war with Russia. They had 1000s of nukes pointed at us. We studied it in school extensively. We all new the world could end at any moment so we lived like there was no tomorrow. Thats basically the 80s and why it was so crazy
Could not have told you who the artist was, but I certainly danced to this dozens of times. I'm 72 now and have an observation for you young'uns: NEVER STOP DANCING. NEVER. ❣
An 80s CLASSIC! The duo in front are Astrid Plane (isn't that a great name??) and Bill Wadhams. They didn't have a ton of hits, but "Obsession" is still played today. "Room to Move" and "Let Him Go" are two of their other hits, but my personal second-favorite of theirs is "I Engineer". And if I may, there's another 80s band (from the Netherlands) that had a hit called "Obsession". The band is called Xymox (or Clan of Xymox), and if you love the 80s synth sound, you'll love this one too. Finally, it's long past time you gave Howard Jones a try. "No One Is to Blame" or "What is Love" would be great introductions.
Astrid Plane is such a great name, I wished it was my name after I became aware of her, ha. This is one of THE major hits of 1985, for me. Still love it nearly 40 years later! As for Xymox, the only song of theirs I'm familiar with is "Imagination." Was a minor radio hit as far as I can remember, but it stuck in my head and I was able to find it many years later with an internet search. It's a really cool song and totally underappreciated, IMO.
Yes, Howard Jones! That will give me some good memories. When I was in college, Event Organisation was part of our course. Our teacher had the brilliant idea to take us to one of the largest concert halls in our small country for a tour. And additionally we could catch a free concert! Howard Jones was one of the artists performing that night. We all went home with a hoarse voice, lol.
The 80's videos LOL, the lyrics ".. who do you want me to be to make you sleep with me" haha, the 80's are simply FANTASTIC! It's no wonder back then we'd all run home from school to watch music videos on MTV (in my case here in Canada, MuchMusic!) and this track was the theme/intro song to one of the most watched TV shows back then Fashion Televsion with your host Jeanne Beker! (sorry couldn't help it!)
Everything involved music as a kid in the 80's. Boombox with a super long extension cord to reach the curb of the street, so we could rock out while we roller skated in the streets. MTV gave us the latest music hits to watch and listen to in our homes 24/7. Each video more outlandish than the next to compete for priority time slots. Music became obsession with getting to see all the performers every day. If we weren't outside off on our own, we were inside watching MTV.
The biggest thing I remember about the 80's was the premier of MTV. Thought that was the greatest thing ever. Was able to listen to it through my stereo. Do I really miss those days. The music and videos were phenomenal. The bigger the TV got the better.
I did the whole of my teens and all of my "firsts" in the 80s.It really was the best of times! The music was so varied-we ran free as there were no mobile phones or tech.We roamed in packs but not to cause trouble. No way to be in touch without being together so we made the most of every moment. My most vivid memory is repeatedly laughing until we literally rolled on the floor or our school desks x
A couple of other great tracks from the 80s I would recommend would be "Two of Hearts" by Stacey Q, and "The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades" by Timbuk 3.
Just like the 1500's was a Renaissance for paintings, sculptures, and engineering, the '80s was a Renaissance for music. There was so many new ideas and experimentation, new digital instruments and media. Just like the canvases and stone of the masters like Michaelangelo, DaVinci, Donatello and others, the '80s saw an explosion of color and vibrancy that had not occurred since Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, etc. It was an awesome time to be a teenager, to have our lives shaped by all the new music of the '80s. I was raised on country, and didn’t understand any other music until a friend played Roxanne and Message in a Bottle by the Police. I was hooked and soon I was listening to Howard Jones, Duran Duran, Psy Furs, B-52s, Oingo Boingo, Missing Persons, Cure, New Order, to name a few. I remember for the first time falling asleep every night to two albums because the were so melodic: Unforgettable Fire by U2 and It's My Life by Talk Talk. I had to flip the cassette tape over to finish the album. Some songs you need to react to: ● Bad by U2 ● Roam by B-52s (nothing like Rock Lobster, Jay) ● Things Can Only Get Better by Howard Jones ● Space Age Love Song by A Flock of Seagulls ● The Sun Always Shines on TV by a-ha ● The Promise by When in Rome Have fun exploring the '80s!
I graduated in 1985......loved the music of the 80's......Voices Carry, safety dance, tainted love, boom boom boom let's go back to my room, rebel yell ( I was in Love with Billy Idol! Lol) Berlin, Roxette, Blonde, the Cars...... brown Eyed Girl, Journey, Fleetwood Mac, Elvis ( all of it....Country, Rock, Gospel.....my Mom was a Huge fan of his music.) Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osborne, Meatloaf, ect.....there were too many great songs to list! Missing Persons, Ratt, AC/DC! 😊👍
I have 100s of favourite 80s memories: going to the roller rink, drive-in cinemas, and hanging out in video arcades at the mall. The fashion was crazy, extreme, diverse but always FUN. I loved how individualism and creativity was prized. It wasn't about aping what everyone else was doing but being carefree and self effacing. Dance the way you want, look the way you want. This was before Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter so it was about being in the moment not documenting what you were doing to show other people.
This week we lost the Gord Lewis, guitarist from Canada's 80's band "Teenage Head" here in Hamilton ON. They were one of the early punk rock bands. RIP.
This is as 80's as 80's got. I loved it when they dropped this song on the dance floor. The beat is still sick. My favorite 80's memory was about '83, they had just opened a water park with a slide and a lake and camping and a whole bunch of other stuff. Never seen anything like that before and it blew my mind. We used to go there for youth group outings in the summer. Most blessedly happy 80's memory for me and my sis.
Jordan/Amber... An early 80s song that hit #1 in the late 80s, years after the group broke up... the biggest one hit wonder... the best rock power ballad... in the guinness book of records... check out "When I'm With You" by SHERIFF.
This is one of a dozen or so songs that really defined the 80s sound. A big part of 80s sound was the development of computer-related electronics. The 80s is the decade when the personal computer first came out, for instance, the first Walkman type personal music players, and digital music / the compact disc format.
It's hard to pull out quintessentially 80s moments, but I guess one would be playing a round of D&D with friends at my house in the morning, then going to the amusement park wearing my Star Wars Return of the Jedi t-shirt and watching Bow Wow Wow and Billy Idol perform on the park's concert stage that night.
The 80's were magical, best memories were hanging at the Arcade playing Joust, Robotron and Pacman. I grew up in a house with 5 siblings and had to listen to their musical tastes. The summer of 82 I got my own stereo and was listening to the local FM radio and they played the top 30 countdown on Saturday nights. For the first time I heard the music of my generation and it spoke to me. Police "everything she does is magic", J.Giles "Freeze Fame", GoGo's "Our Lips are sealed", Rick Springfield "Jessies Girl", Fleetwood Mac "Hold Me", Huey Lewis, ZZ Top, Styx, Joan Jet, Pat Benatar - Just to name a few. I love all the genre's of the 80's and felt like I was finally grown up at 15 years old.
Not to mention The Movies that were released to us that Summer. Never again will there ever be a blockbuster summer movie releases like the summer of 82. The year itself had such wonderful really great movies that were so well done. Classic year for many things 1982 was.
So grateful to have grown up in the 80s. Cannot describe that time to people now. Had to live it. We knew all this tech was coming. We knew we had incredible music and artists that would be legends, never to be repeated again.
I was a teenager in the 80s and really, the sound of a song was what captured me, it was all about the sound ….. most often I didn’t actually listen to the lyrics until much later. Certainly a diverse decade. Living in the 80s wasn’t as crazy as the videos would make you think …..
I grew up in the 80's graduated HS in 88. The craziest stories I guess I have are me and my friends driving around back roads in the middle of the winter at night sliding into snowbanks on purpose. Driving out on the (hopefully) frozen lakes. Partying in the woods all weekend and somehow our parent's not freaking out about it. We are the latchkey generation. I was coming home to an empty house at 10. Doing laundry, cooking my meals, whatever. During the summers we would be out for maybe days at a time. Hanging at this or that friend's house. It's funny, when you talk about 80s music it's hard to think or it as one style or sound. You can divide it up into like 2yr sections and each one would be different than the last or the next. Some stuff (like this song) are guilty pleasures, others I have revisited and really maintained a love for. For truly great songs with an 80s vibe similar (but better) than Animotion check out Howard Jones (What Is Love, New Song, or No One Ever Is To Blame) or Paul Young (Every Time You Go Away).
My favorite memory from the 80's my sister, best friend and myself were jamming to Prince "1999" when my friends brothers came looking for her... It was perfect timing, when they knocked we answered the door singing "If you didn't come to party don't bother knocking on my door" then slammed the door shut in their faces. LMAO 🤣🤣🤣
I'm COMPLETELY serious... I went to my prom looking almost exactly like that girl (not even on purpose). I had the same color dress and my hair looked pretty much exactly like that.... And I thought I looked AMAZING!!! 😂😂🤣. Best decade ever!
I just laughed out loud. Literally. You guys are great haha when you both figured out why everybody was in the costumes they were in, I let out a big laugh.
It's a medley of Animotion's greatest hit! Great Rock of the '80s song. Another group from this era that you would enjoy is Missing Persons. They had a couple of songs worth checking out: "Words" and "Destination Unknown." Remember guys, the reason the '80s produced such crazy videos was because MTV (Music Television, which began as a network that only played music videos, not the crap they show today) debuted in the early '80s. So record companies suddenly started spending money producing videos to go along with the records they released.
I can comprehend why so many people often say '84 was their favorite '80s year in music, it was after all a year where many new pop artist became superstars of the charts but for me the best part of the '80s was actually the very early years, in particular 1981 was a crucial banner year in popular music because there was so much important new stuff coming out in all genres around that time, that all made a lasting impression on the whole popular music scene. The last truly excellent classic '80s year, I'd say was '87 although there'd still be good stuff coming later on as well.
The music shaped the 80s. It was everywhere. All of my memories involve music. We had the start of MTV and VH1. Nights at the skating rink, in the arcade, at the bowling alley, weekends at the lake, all with an 80s soundtrack in the background. A lot of the best movies were remembered for the soundtracks.
A great 1980's movie to add to your movie reaction channel is "Valley Girl" starring a young Nicholas Cage in one of his first movies. "Valley Girl" is so 80's and defines the decade perfectly (especially the mall culture of that time and the outrageous clothing) and I love two of the songs that were featured in the movie: "Electric Avenue" sung by Eddie Grant and one of my favorite 80's songs, "I Melt With You" by Modern English. Those two songs would be great to review and I second the notion on "Waiting For a Star To Fall". They absolutely have got to review that one. Amber would especially like it and it's such an uplifting song.
I graduated from high school in 81 so from 80-89 holy hell the things my friends and I did. No way you could do them today without getting busted. Damn good times.
Keep feeling "fascination" was a great one, "Don't you want me baby" was another great song as well. I was 17 yrs old in 1982, I was loving all the music, from The Cars to Metallica, GNR, to Billy Idol. We had so much to sample!! It was some of music's greatest breakthroughs!! No matter what you liked❤️
Wow...the memories! The Limelight in Atlanta loved to play this and blow confetti out of the Cannons. Great times!!! And...we didn't take things or lyrics so seriously.
Both the 70s and 80s produced very eclectic music. We had it all! A story: I went to my first concert in 1980. It was DEVO in a place called the Paramount Theater in Portland, Oregon. Each member stood with a giant strobe light behind them. My friend and I were in the back row of this smallish venue. With every beat, their strobe lights flashed. Because of the heat from those lights, we were both sweating like pigs throughout the show.
Since I was a kid in 1980s, my favorite memories are from the Malls. They had Arcades, movie theaters, food court, Tower Records, video stores, comic book shops, Hifi Buys, Spencer's Gifts, Brock's candy stores, you could spend an entire day in the mall and never see the same thing twice. Believe me, Malls today are nothing like they used to be.
Tower Records is making a bit of a comeback. The last physical store still operates in Tokyo, Japan. But, they have started a website and are selling music on it. Shipping everywhere. They did a documentary film a couple of years ago on it....it renewed interest in the brand. So, while it will probably never be the same experience as the stores in the 80's, it is worth at least checking out.
This is one of my favourite songs from the eighties, I love how sinister it is under a great dance vibe. I was a young mum in the eighties and I just remember big hair and shoulder pads, and lots and lots of gaudy colours. I loved men wearing makeup and dressing like they didn’t feel the need to be macho. I think it was so experimental musically because of the discovery of electronic music in the mid to late seventies. Incidentally I couldn’t help but notice Amber had a butterfly on her t shirt!
My favorite memory of the 80's would be riding my motorcycle through the Black Hills of South Dakota listening to ZZ top and Def Leppard. Back then there was very little traffic, the music was awesome, and gas was cheap.....not to mention I was still a teenager.
I was 20 years old in 1980 and it seemed like there was a new artist or a new sound every week. Getting to see Talking Heads live is a favorite memory of mine.
I graduated high school in 1986 and I have to say that there has never been a time like it. Just sitting on the porch drinking beer with my friends and relaxing on a hot summer night while these songs played on the radio - not as oldies, but as current hits, over and over - is something that is unforgettable. And yes, 1986 ws the year that the drinking age was raised from 18 to 21 for beer..... 11 days after my 18th birthday, so I granfathered into legally drinking beer --- barely! I remember drinking with my friends at a drive-in screening of Porky's II and being so drunk that it took 3 of us to drive home (I was in charge of the emergency brake). A few fun songs from the era you should check out are "Tarzan Boy" by Baltimora, "Beds Are Burnin'" by Midnight Oil and "Run, Run Away" by Slade. Love your channel! Keep up the good work! Long live the 80's!!!
We jammed this song back in high school, parents were concerned because the lyrics, but we didn’t care, we partied to this jam. Man the 80s were so much fun!
Starting in the mid to late 70s through the 1980s, music was very experimental. And the biggest reason was due to the synthesizer. The synthesizer, like the internet today, removed a lot of obstacles for musicians, singers, and songwriters. You no longer needed a full band when you can sample, tune, mix, and arrange an entire album from your garage. If it wasn't for the synthesizer rap & hip hop never would have gotten off the ground.
More specifically the MIDI. That meant synthesizers went from huge studio sets only producers and studio technicians could use to portable instruments anybody who could play a piano could use and easily transport to any gig. And yes, it also meant a lot of new experimental sounds became readily available to musicians willing to try and discover them. The Fairlight CMI sampler which was introduced around 1980 also meant you could incorporate any recorded sound into your music. A *lot* of previous limitations and obstacles were gone and the sky was the limit.
As an 80's guy (class of '85) that's a PERFECT description of the 80's: experimental. Plus, add in the failed movie cinematographers and producers using all these special effects and camera techniques that were available at the time that weren't really appropriate or needed for movies, and making these crazy, but awesome videos! It was a really fun time! Btw, on a side note, my friend and I were the original Beavis and Butthead! We watched MTV and made fun of all the videos that "sucked", and then cheered when a good one would come on!! Fun times!
I grew up in the 80s in a small town called Angus, in Southern Ontario. The closest city was Barrie, and every year in Molson's Park in Barrie they had a big all-day concert on Canada Day, with a fireworks show at night. Most of the bands that played the concert were Canadian, and the main one I remember was The Northern Pikes, doing "Teenland". Iconic early 80s Canadian rock, probably worth a reaction.
Awwww man no way !! It’s nearly 4am and being on older gentleman I woke up to have a leak and looked at my phone which was a mistake as I seen this posted … kin awesome guys !! I’m an old punk so I’ve no idea why this don’t captivated me but it did … love the bass track , simple song done well …. Similar comments to Propaganda song Duel !! Cheers guys 👍🏴
This is a variation of new wave to me….but to be fair, every decade had its collection of genres, to a degree. For example, the ‘70s had folk, rock, hard rock, ballads, disco, funk, pop, metal, and the sub-variations of those….it also saw punk, the beginnings of new wave and the beginning of Van Halen, which is a genre unto itself, to me……it even saw some pop jazz emerge into the mainstream of popular music……at least as many creative genres as the ‘80s, in my opinion.
*Maybe now is the time to try some Missing Persons songs: Words____Noticeable One__Walking in L.A.__Destination Unknown. AMBER...the singer is a young lady named Dale Bozzio, so these songs would also work for female Fridays. You'll love her.*
New wave, dance-punk, post-punk. The music and the clothes, hairstyle. New wave is an offshoot of punk rock music.. Some say "watered down" punk rock music you can dance to with futuristic sounding synthesizers, heavy bass guitars, catchy drum beats, etc Lot of new wave/post-punk songs are like this. We didn't really noticed, just something to danced and groove to it. lol. Kind of nonchalant. Other songs/videos from this group yall will are "I Engineer", "Let Him Go", "Room to Move". GenXer here, too. We were kids (me) , teens or young adults when this song was huge (mid '80s). Other groups like them were Human League, Thompson Twins, ABC, Ace of Base, Berlin . Check them out! Very 80s! We also had early rap music, pop, punk, metal, rock, R&B/funk, country music, freestyle music, etc. Great movies, tv shows, and malls, video games, arcades, sports, bikes/skating water parks/pools, , lol Great times!
The most disappointing part of the 80's is that we thought those days would last forever.
Hah!! Speak for yourself….I thought disco 🕺🏾 in the 70s would last forever until 1981 when the second British Invasion came along 😒
For sure! We should have known better, but we were too enraptured by it to know or care.
Amen! I was living my best life in 1987 at 18 years old as a club kid in an rave dance club. Not a care in the world! I’d go back in a heartbeat if I could!
@@kerrijohnson2303 I wish it every single day!
Definitely miss those days. Great music
I was going to type pretty much the same thing so - -yeah, nailed it.
YESSS!!!
120 Minutes was the best show on MTV 😁
@@nancysmith8626 we sure are!
Need to add Frankie Goes to Hollywood's Relax as another unforgettable 80s song.
Yes .... With the Original Video!
Absolutely LOVE that song!!!
Oh man!
...Don't Do It!!! Younger kid me singing out loud in public. Now finally, really listening to the lyrics.... 😳
Its An Awesome Song....RELAX!!!!
AMEN.
Yeah, made huge by the pre-teen Gen X'rs. Was a crap bubblegum pop song then, is now. A catchy beat is easy to achieve, but a catchy beat does not a good or great song make.
@@cup_cuppy_cuppers5817 Tell us how you REALLY feel, ha.
Their song "Words" is brilliant.
Yes! Missing Persons
Lady Gaga ripped off everything about Missing Person's and this generation has no idea.
I agree!
Yes! Yaz was one of my favs too. 🤗 Don’t Go was a good one too by them. 👍🏽
Sooooo 80’s.......massive hit in the UK......still got the 12” 👍❤️
Even though you've watched a lot of videos already, there are still TONS of greats that you still haven't seen. Just scratched the surface. 💜
No kids really thought anything was weird about the artsy fartsy videos or music, The Don't Come Around Here No More video by Tom Petty was a real flip out- I really was fascinated by the video for White Wedding by Billy Idol - Girls Just Want to Have Fun by Cyndi Lauper and Thriller were super big- also everyone thought Boy George was gay because he wore make up -
speaking of which, this is was something a lot of us did- try to guess if a male artist was gay or not, (yes it's a weird past time for 10 yr old girls to engage in, but times were different) - back to the videos, unless being unclothed was somehow involved and even then it was just and off-handed thing, like "That's different," (In Careless Whisper the girl is in a towel I think, not to mention the Girls, Girls, Girls video and Madonna wore crop tops with her underwear on the outside, like all the time) most adults just accepted the weirdness of videos- and Pee Wee Herman, and He Man and Smurfs - the 80's was just a colorful hodge podge of awesomeness-
I think a lot of people were more free back then, like most of the parents who grew up in the 50's and 60's were peace, love and free to be you and me, basically, (Baby Boomers) but there were rules - also they didn't helicopter their kids or always guard what their kids had access to, like they do today- I see in a lot of the comments people talking about being afraid of nuclear war, but it seemed in my little corner of the world we were more or less just busy living life and it was an abstract thing that still seems unreal to me- even though I watched Red Dawn when it came out- later my mom told me she grew up scared of nuclear war and didn't want us growing up with that hanging over our heads- so she didn't talk about it much but we watched the news and went to school- I guess it just didn't capture my attention from being absolutely petrified of tornadoes- I have never seen The Day After- a made-for-tv movie which was a cultural phenomenon about what would happen if there was a nuclear attack- but I never heard of it until I was watching some 80's nostalgia show and they talked about it on that --so anyways that's my 80's story- thanks if you read it all- you'll be alright 😉
I was thinking the same thing. We NEVER picked any songs apart like this.
Yup!!! That's the 80s right there in a nutshell! Clubs, clubs, and more clubs!!! Dancing our asses off all night!!! What a time to be alive and young!!!!! I feel sorry for the later generations who never had what we had!!!!
I was born in 1960.........Loved the 70's and 80's...........I loved the disco era too............
Lol
We would be out until dinner time or later and our parents never really knew where we were. Or they would drop us off at the mall or six flags (until one of us got a car). No cell phones or any way to be tracked down, we were free!
but do you remember that public service announcement that used to come on ... "it's 10pm, do you know where your children are?"
I was a Gen-X latch key kid. I did have older siblings but they were usually out with their friends so when I got out of school I walked home, made myself a snack, and watched cartoons until my mom came home around 5:30.
Fellow '86er!!! 😋
An '86er here as well! We are BY FAR the most "80s" of all since we tured 13 in '81 and 21 in '89. Middle, high school and College ALL IN THE 80s! Best time EVER!!!!!
Absolutely ... 💯
And we ROCKED it!!
We killed it ... Had so much FUN and still turned out GREAT!! 😀👊
FAVOURITE MEMORY THAT CAPTURES MY TEENAGE 80’s
Senior high Prom.
"the pop, the rap, the... whatever THIS is..." 🤣🤣🤣 This song is a BANGER!!! One of my faves-- reminds me of freshman year of high school!
the 80s ushered out disco...introduced power pop and alt pop and synth pop...began the new wave of British Heavy Metal and metal revival ... the arrival of rap as a big time commodity...then pop/glam/hair metal - which led to the backlash that was grunge in the 90s
80s was awesome. If I could pick to go back...I would do the entire decade over again.
Yes absolutely! Me toooooo
Born in 1972 and I love the 80s music. Nice to be among friends. LOL
edited to *Yaz/Yazoo* - Originally the band was "Yazoo" but later they had to change it to "Yaz" in the North American market. 💛😉👍
Love Tainted Love 🙂
agree Yaz- Situation is a must!! They reacted to Tainted Love about 10 months ago
@@surlechapeau oh dang, I missed their reaction to Tainted Love!! Thank you, I'll go check it out!! 😁
Tainted Love is the quintessential song of the 80's. Along with Relax by Frankie Goes to Hollywood.
@@mikekling you're welcome!
The clothes, sound, dance moves, hair.. wow these guys are soooo 80s! I had heard the song but hadn’t seen that vid (or not that I remember). Good fun
85 lived in Seattle with my dad over summer, 86 was expo 86 Egypt pavilion, Studio 86, man some of the ppl singing. Was awesome.
When i watch these old videos it reminds me of just how strange and unique of a time i grew up in. Good times!
In the early 80s, synthesisers suddenly became affordable and many bands based their sound on them. Also, many of the pop culture icons were evolving such as Terminator, Aliens, Rambo, Packman etc that we still see today. So it was a very memorable time.
This song was a HUGE hit back when I was in junior high. I wish I had a dime for every time it came on the radio back then!
80s classic! Every time I hear this song, I think Saturday night‘s main event because that was the original opening theme to that wrestling show!
❤️ it then ... 💕 It now 💃💃💃💃💃....
Yeeesssss!!!! 80s.... We thrived on creative
I was definitely obsessed with “Obsession”! Loved the 80’s. Another great song is “I Know There’s Something Going On” by Frida who was one of the lead singers of ABBA.
Yeah, a bit more of a rock sound, but very 80s as well.
That was a GREAT song!!
'experimental' is a very good description of the 80s sound and the culture. we (gen-xers) were both retrospective and forward-looking in our outlook.
She sang that?! Oh wow!!
I engineer is a great tune
Astrid Plane is such a great name, I wished it was my name after I became aware of her, ha. This is one of THE major hits of 1985, for me. Still love it nearly 40 years later!
As for Xymox, the only song of theirs I'm familiar with is "Imagination." Was a minor radio hit as far as I can remember, but it stuck in my head and I was able to find it many years later with an internet search. It's a really cool song and totally underappreciated, IMO.
Would *love* to get some HoJo in the mix!!! I'd go with "Life in One Day" or "Things Can Only Get Better" for openers, but he's got a great library!
@@matthewteague623 disagree, start where it started with New Song...the lyrics are perfect for these two...
CRUISIN.......cruisin was big back in the '80's. Cool cars with bad ass stereos and big motors prowling the strip on a Friday night.
Yes!! Love those two songs!
😎👍😃❣️😃👍😎
Some songs you need to react to:
● Bad by U2
● Roam by B-52s (nothing like Rock Lobster, Jay)
● Things Can Only Get Better by Howard Jones
● Space Age Love Song by A Flock of Seagulls
● The Sun Always Shines on TV by a-ha
● The Promise by When in Rome
Have fun exploring the '80s!

I was 14yrs old when MTV first aired 1981 and ran 24/7 my favorite video Madonna "Dress You Up" showcase her talent beauty and sex appeal
Great line. "The 80's. You can get synth, the pop, rap, and whatever this is." I spit out my drink when you said that. Love it.
Late 80's they played at a club called One Step Beyond. After the show they came down and danced with us 🤙
As a child of the ‘80’s I can definitely confirm it was EXTRA. Try Nu Shooz- I Cant Wait. I still love that song. Sooo totally’80’s, dudes.
It's true. You HAD to be there to get it.
I was a teenager in the 80s and really, the sound of a song was what captured me, it was all about the sound ….. most often I didn’t actually listen to the lyrics until much later. Certainly a diverse decade. Living in the 80s wasn’t as crazy as the videos would make you think …..
You are right, Jay and Amber; We had SO MANY GENRES; there are still some you need to try; Freestyle, Hi-NRG, House Music (all dance/club genres) ❤️
They had a couple of songs worth checking out: "Words" and "Destination Unknown."
Remember guys, the reason the '80s produced such crazy videos was because MTV (Music Television, which began as a network that only played music videos, not the crap they show today) debuted in the early '80s.
This is the best comment section thread. A GOLD MINE of the best memories ever. 🙌
Couldn't agree more
And it's on Prime right now!
Valley Girl has arguably the best ‘80s soundtrack! The Plimsouls, The Psychedelic Furs, The Payolas, Josie Cotton, Felony, and The Flirts too.
@@conrad4667 and Bonnie Hayes' "Girls Like Me"! One of the most underrated '80s jams!
ELECTRIC AVENUE and MELT WITH YOU!!!! 👍😃❣️😃👍
Some of the best keyboards of the time.
I graduated from high school in 81 so from 80-89 holy hell the things my friends and I did. No way you could do them today without getting busted. Damn good times.
80s was my favorite decade. I was in high school at the start of the 80s, and lived through all of the best music around.
A story:
I went to my first concert in 1980.
Seeing Devo live this summer. I was barely born when they had they heyday and always felt I missed out on great music.
One of the coolest songs of the 80's!!! 🙂
Malls were our hangout spot too.
Malls are dying. But maybe that's a good thing 🤔
You can imagine getting up in the morning turning on MTV and not moving for eight hours.
Lucky you! Talking Heads are one of my top 5 favorite bands of all time.
Love talking heads. If you a minute check out Kermit The From singing Once In A Lifetime. My kids love it
I graduated high school in 1986 and I have to say that there has never been a time like it.
Huge hit in the 80's. Clubs and radio played this song like crazy. New wave was big and this song with its techno feel was awesome!
We jammed this song back in high school, parents were concerned because the lyrics, but we didn’t care, we partied to this jam. Man the 80s were so much fun!
Samantha Fox - Naughty Girls Need Love Too
Baltimora - Tarzan Boy
Was (Not Was) - Walk The Dinosaur
All 80's, all need to be checked out.
I agree! Loved the 80s! Still do...
Samantha Fox and her first success "touch me"...
Tarzan Boy … omg, forgot all about that one-hit wonder! Would be good for them to do.
Yessssssss to all. Tarzan Boy is such a guilty pleasure 😂
Very true.. I'm a musician and started my Band Days back then!!
Fun times!
LOL...."if someone dedicates this song to you...run!" OMG...that just cracked me up. 😀
My favourite song of 1985. Goes with Rick Springfield Celebrate Youth, Gary Numan Change Your Mind, Cindy Lauper Goonies Good Enough, Madonna Gambler.
I love the dynamic between you two. It still tickles me when Jay is the more excited one. Happy you reacted to this wild 80s classic. 💜
Some say "watered down" punk rock music you can dance to with futuristic sounding synthesizers, heavy bass guitars, catchy drum beats, etc
Lot of new wave/post-punk songs are like this.
You could pretty much count on artists to release good stuff on a regular basis, new albums coming out every year.
I can't count the number of times I danced to this song with my man, at the time. Love it!
OMG.... the side ponytail. We thought that was so cool back then. As an adult 35 years later we realized how ridiculous that was. lol
I was in love with the female singer....
