    On a whim (and before I got into more expense and repair) I thought I would try Amsoil's engine flush with my oil change. I had high hopes that it would solve my low oil pressure and I was NOT disappointed! This was well worth the $10 spent and I highly recommend you give it a try if you have having low oil pressure readings on your GMC Yukon or Sierra, Chevy Tahoe or Suburban.

    530,140 mile 5.3 vortec, on a 2001 gmc sierra 1500 here. I use the AMS oil engine flush once in a while on my "daily." Still running strong, never had the motor rebuilt. Usually go 3k to 4k miles, and then change my oil. The high mileage and age is there. The short time frame between oil changes is there, but its just cheap insurance, and its worked for me this long. My noble steed still gets me to point A & B, and beyond. Took me all over the country and experienced all the servere climate changes during my railroad days. Good luck pal, and hope you recieve the results youre attempting to achieve. 🤟💪🏼👍

    I had the same issue with my 2005 Silverado 5.3L, 4x4, Z71. Dropped the 4x4 axle, took the oil pan off, had it chemically cleaned, what a mess it was! and replaced the o-ring (not surprised to see that it was split).
    The work was performed by my hand at odometer 256,500 miles. Since this work, the oil pressure is steady at 40+ and increases with rpm. Worth mentioning, I always ran a 5w30 synthetic and now running a 10w30 synthetic with WixXP oil filter. It was recommended by the engine machine shop, to run a heavier oil. I took heed to the advice and it is the best move made for this engine. No valve tapping at start which tended to rack my nerves, especially in the winter with the low oil pressure warning.
    Getting the work done was a good 12-15 hours on the driveway. It wasn't easy but I made it happen. You too can do this job!

    Success. 2011 Silverado 5.3 Z71 with 220k miles. Amsoil flush with new 10W30 Castrol Syn blend & Bosch filter #3334 (my routine for last 5 years) brought pressure up to 40+ from 20- psi like it was before a local shop replaced leaking rear main seal, oil pan gasket, and motor mounts. Might have been a bad or wrong ACDelco filter by the shop. This solved the trouble code and I feel 100% confident we'll be running strong here on out. PSI still great like it should be after 1250 miles.

    I used to use Mobil 1 and found the oil very dirty as well when I would change it.
    Then I switched to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum and it’s better, the oil stays cleaner longer. Plus the engine is quieter and smoother.
    Although amsoil is good oil I feel like it’s too hard to get and it’s more expensive compared to just going to a store. Plus, I don’t care how good they say the oil is, I don’t trust any oil in my engine for 20,000 miles.
    I change my oil every 5,000 miles.

    I have a 06 Envoy Denali had a oil leak so after discover the things that have to be done just to drop the pan I figured I better do what I can while I’m in there. I ring, new gasket where the most comical things to do. Get it back together and I get the no oil pressure shot engine off warning. Thought I might of nicked the o ring. Repeated the process and changed the ring. Same results, now I’m coming from the top and replacing the oil pump. But never thought to try and flush the engine. I pray that is my answer to not having any pressure. Glad your video popped up in my recommendation feed.

      @KMLTimesTwo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Replacing the oil pump without dropping the pan can be challenging for sure. I tried it but then eventually dropped the pan as well. While you're that deep into it, check to see if your oil pan has a pressure valve in it. If so you might as well replace it while you're there. You might also consider replacing the cam plate behind the larger timing gear. It was recommended to me that that could be a source of oil pressure reduction. I don't think that's your problem but it could be an issue contributing to it. If you use the meling pump pay attention to which o-ring they tell you to use. Of course I didn't and put the wrong one back in.

    You did the absolutely correct thing by running the Amsoil flush. I would also recommend you switch to 10w30 signature series as it will continue to maintain a higher oil pressure better than the 5w30 under higher throttle and hill climbs. And also gets consumed by the engine significantly less.

    My best guess is a clogged pickup screen, which the flush cleared up enough to let the pump not cavitate as much as before. Dropping the pan and clear it is always the safest procedure, including making sure the seals are ok so it doesn’t suck air.

    Another issue these Chevys has with low oil pressure is the oil pickup tube O ring going bad. My 08 Silverado had this issue two years ago. Would be driving and I would lose oil pressure and I would get some lifter tap for a few seconds then the oil pressure would come back and it would go away. If it is a 4wd it is a pretty involved job meaning that you would have to lower the front differential and unbolt the steering rack to remove the oil pan. It's not difficult to do, just time consuming.

    • @KMLTimesTwo
      @KMLTimesTwo  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the post. Yes I have looked into a few of the different reasons for low oil pressure. None of the fixes seem to be very fun. I was highly skeptical that this would even work and I'm still skeptical that it's a long-term solution but so far so good. I fully expected to be replacing the sensor and the screen. Or like you said the oil pick up tube seal. Or oil pump for that matter. I am hoping that I don't have to get into any of that stuff.

    • @CSXtrackworker
      @CSXtrackworker 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KMLTimesTwo I doubt it is the oil pump from personal experiences with the truck. Sometimes running oil longer like Mobil 1 can clog up the screen. I have 272,000 on my 08 Silverado and its still going strong. I run Amsoil in it and my 2018 Cummins. The Amsoil flush does work. I flush the Silverado every 10,000 and no issues. If it was an oil pump you would get a P0300 code most likely due to little oil pressure pumping up your lifters and it would in turn cause engine misfire on the collapsed lifters. If it comes back again, I do the easier fix first. The pick up tube I ring.

      @@bcruzin28 Not sure how much you have seen below, but a year after this video, the oil pressure would start out okay, then slowly creep down to just below 20psi at idle. (Apparently that was still within spec according to Haynes manual. All of my past GM trucks were rock solid 40psi no matter what.) I replaced the oil pick up tube o-ring. This was not fun as the front transfer has to come out. I did do another flush when I replaced the o-ring. Then my oil pressure would start a 70psi when cold, then eventual settle about 22psi when cold. (This really confused me!) It's been like this for about 2-3 months now, so I thought I would try the oil pressure sensor. I couldn't get my hands back there properly, so I had to take my intake manifold off. (I am glad I did actually, because it runs really strong now. I think I had a manifold leak that I wasn't aware of.) Anyway, the new sensor reads the same....no change. BTW, mine did not have a screen. I think some of the 07-08's did not have a screen.
      So, I am still within spec, but it is bugging me. There is a possibility that when I pushed the oil pick up tube in, the o-ring didn't fully seat properly....or it's new oil pump time. I am not looking forward to it, but I suspect I will be putting in a new oil pump in the fall.
      All that said, I still believe in the flush. It's results were immediately visible to me. That said, the motor had a lot of miles on it, so it can't perform miracles. It's a very cheap thing to try. I would try that, the go with the easiest thing first and replace your sensor. Good luck and let me know how it turns out!

    • @KMLTimesTwo
      @KMLTimesTwo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not a mechanic, but I would say that sludge would impact your reading, but in an opposite way than what you are saying. Any sludge (that sinks to the bottom) will take the place of where oil should be. I don't think it would cause it to read low on dipstick though. The oil would be on top of sludge I think and therefore "higher up" on your dipstick. Sounds like you have a major issue that needs addressing ASAP. How do you know that there is sludge in there? If there is a lot of sludge, I would drop the oil pan. But you could try a few flushes and oil changes, but that gets costly. I don't know is how much the Amsoil Engine Flush would have on your amount of sludge.

I was VERY careful not to make a mess....but I still ended up with a lot on the floor. I even had a large piece of cardboard down as well. If you decided to take it on, find a good video for your exact car so you have a plan. I would not do it in a driveway as it will permanently stain the concrete. Nothing easy about changing the oil pump pick up tube seal. The bolt that holds it in the oil pump is extremely hard to get at with the motor in the vehicle even partially dropping the oil pan. Recommend tying a string or fishing line on it before trying to reinstall the pick up tube bolt in the oil pump so you don’t drop it in the oil pan and lose it. Just finished doing timing chain, oil pump, and water pump in my truck and that was the hardest part of the whole job.

    Both my 2005 Hummer H2 and 2007 H3 have low oil pressure warnings every time I drive them but the engines run fair enough. My 2007 H3 probably has a clogged catalytic converter because it is seriously severely underpowered and will not go over 55 mph. It was not like that when I bought it. I changed the spark plugs and clean the ignition coils, removed and clean the electronic throttle body, it does not smoke, and the oil level always reads full. So I think it's a bad catalytic converter because it rattles when you floor it to high RPM. The H2 engine seems to run pretty good but the check engine light is on and says there is a evap leak. The EVAP system has charcoal pellets throughout it every time I clean it out even after I changed the charcoal canister, purge valve, and purge solenoid. Maybe I should ditch the poorly made GM luxury vehicles and go back to poorly made Ford luxury vehicles which I like better lol.

      After a year or so, I started to have issues again. First, I ended up replacing the oil pressure sensor, then oil pick up tube o-ring. That was a lot of work, especially by oneself. That didn't help much, just a little. I went back in and replaced oil pump, cam shaft retainer plate. (I replaced timing chain and cam position sensor while I was there.) It is a Melling high volume pump, so now I have 60psi when cold. When it warms up, I have 50 psi when driving an 25 at idle. Good I guess, but I am still not satisfied. (My neighbors new truck varies like this as well, but this is lower than I would like when idling.) Unfortunately, I didn't put the proper o-ring on the oil pick up tube when I put it all back together. (Melling gives you a thicker green o-ring. This is a possible problem still and I might go back in one more time.) Also, there is a pressure relief spring thing in the oil pan. If I do drop the pan again, I will replace that.) If I do these two things and it is still not better, then I have larger issues. All my previous trucks were always at 40 psi, but I can't find out what truck was stock. Do you remember on yours?

    • @KMLTimesTwo
      @KMLTimesTwo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Clayton, my oil pressure was not as low as yours was, but the flush definitely helped increase my oil pressure. It has certainly decreased again over time. The most common problem is the o-ing on the oil pick up tube needs to be replaced. (The tube is in the oil pan.) There are some good videos out there on this process. The o-ring itself is a very cheap part, but not easy to get to. You need to drop the oil pan and that requires removal of the cross brace and lowering of your front differential (not removal, but lowering.) That will get you access to the pick up tube and you can replace the o-ring. I would recommend a new oil pan gasket while you are there. With the oil, oil pan gasket and part, you are looking at around $100 to do it yourself. I can't imagine how much it costs to have a shop do it. $600??

      Also keep in mind that these are older GM vehicles, and if they have over 150K miles, especially if they're mostly city/short trip miles, then the main bearing is likely wearing out. This wear creates space that reduces oil pressure in the block. A common symptom of this is low oil pressure at idle at temp. GM engines just aren't built to last very long, even when you keep them well maintained. You can drive them for a long time with the bearing wearing out, but it only gets worse and is a pretty good sign that you'll be needing a new vehicle in the coming few years.

    oil pressure is a measurement of the oil restriction within the engine orfices. Within reason a measurement of 10psi per 1000 rpm is within spec. Low oil pressure (within reason) usually allows good oil flow through moving parts. i personally do not like to see very high oil pressure as this equates to oil restriction and lower horse power. You be the judge.

    If you look at the factory service manual 20 psi at idle is not a problem. When oil is hot, it thins out and oil pressure will drop. When the oil is cold, or just after an oil change as you stated in the video, it will naturally show a higher pressure reading. To compare apples to apples, you need to take the temp of the oil. Oil also drops is viscosity as it is used, and that is some used oil. Your comparing old oil with new oil. The flush does not prove anything. I've been using Amsoil for 30 years. 20 is not low.

      Thanks for the info Brian. I have never had that low of an oil pressure in any of my 3 other GM trucks that had basically the same motor. (Also in same environment/heat.) Nor, did the oil pressure swing that much. I think there were times that is was even reading lower than 20. I did due one oil change previous to this with "normal" oil, and it did not have as much of an impact as the Amsoil oil cleaner. While it is "solved" in my mind, I am not saying that it proves anything. Just showed my results for having used it. That said, it could be the cleaner or the oil. Those were the only 2 changes.

      Hey Seb. It worked for quite a bit. That said, it is not a miracle elixir. (I was surprised actually it had any effect at all.) Anyway, about a year and about 10K miles after this, the oil pressure started to go lower. It would start out around 40, then go down to about 18-20. This started a bunch of work for me. I replaced the oil pressure sensor. No change. Then changed out the o-ring in the pick up tube. (This was a major job.) Very little change. I then replaced the oil pump (with a Melling high volume) and also replaced the cam shaft retainer plate (that is an issue as well.) Now I get 60 psi at start, and when it warms up, I get 50psi driving, 20 psi at idle. (Apparently that is still well within spec, but too low for my comfort.)
      Well, one problem is I didn't follow directly and replace the orange pick up tube o-ring with the green one as melling advises. So that could be an issue. The other thing that could be an issue is there is a pressure relieve spring in the oil pan. I've had the oil pan out twice now....do you think I replaced it? Of course not! So, next oil change, I plan to drop the pan again and change out the spring and o-ring. If that doesn't fix it, it is more than like cam bearings or something major.

    Car slowly creeping down in oil pressure is a sign of worn engine. Rarely is it the pump. Pumps create volume not pressure, your bearings, oil screens (to some extent), mains, cambridge, camshafts, cam bearings/cradle. The oil pump throughout the cars life is bathed in oil. unless your car is known to have an oil pump issue. First look for actual damage before replacing it. Pump should spin freely and never catch. Teeth inside pump should look sharp any bent or scared gears could be source of issue.

Like rarely in a car like mine does the oil pump fail, its ran on a chain on the crank and bathed in oil most of its life. It can fail. Its just much more likely for cam/ crank wear to have occured becauss of dirty oil rather than a lack of it in my opinion. Causing low oil pressure after a long time of getting beat up. 167k mile bought my car used. Cylinder head is toast. Has oil pressure but not what it should. Pulled my valve cover to find that the cams are worn pretty badly.. in my car though again its very rare to have an oil pump fail. In my case an actual screen in oil feed broke loose and the cams basically ate it. Either that or its sitting somewhere in an oil passage restricting oil flow. Dont have the money for a new cylinder head because i spent it on a pump before i took my head off :D

    Those engines also have an oil pickup tube, and the O-ring sometimes goes bad. But they designed it to have two bolts to hold it up onto the engine. And they decided to delete one of the bolt holes on the pickup tube even though the other bolt-hole is still in the block. If you take a good strong washer. Pinch the other side of that oil pickup tube flange, you won't have that problem again. If General Motors morons had not deleted the rest of the flange oh, you still would never have that issue come up.
    About a week before you do an oil change, take a quart of transmission fluid or Marvel Mystery Oil and put it in the engine and drive it for about a week. It will keep everything in that engine spotlessly clean.

    Mobil 1 is not nearly high-quality enough to leave in an engine for 7,500 miles.
    The reason is not because of the screen that goes immediately below the oil pressure sending unit. The oil passages that feed that accoutrement, get sludged up. Doesn't matter how many times you change a screen, a boil is not getting to a good it's not going to register much oil pressure. It's a dead head unit. And when it gets pledged up it's not going to transfer oil pressure. Engine sludge up quite easily when you drive them easily or short trips.

    I'm not so sure you should give the engine flush credit for fixing your low oil pressure problem. The oil filter was probably sludged up, and changing your filter was the actual fix. Keep in mind too that if that filter gets too clogged up, the bypass valve will open up, and you won't get clean oil circulating in your engine. Better not to wait 7,500 miles to change your oil on an older car.
