    In my U.S History class we had a substitute teacher who was a "river rat" in the Vietnam War. He told how people wouldn't give them the time of day, calling them "murderers and scum." I remember we thanking him for his service one by one as we left the class that day. You could see the joy in his eyes that people actually respected/understood what he went through.

    You should NEVER ask a veteran if they killed someone or to explain what its like to kill someone it so wrong. I remember asking my dad who he first killed then he thought for like 2 seconds then he starts crying, that's the first time and last I have ever seen my dad cry. It brings back traumatizing memories about what they saw and what they had to live through.

    My grandpa died at 67 in 2016. Heart Attack. He never would talk about Vietnam. In fact when we lived to Singapore and wondered if he would visit, he didn’t want to go anywhere near Asia. I visited Vietnam when to the villages, saw the war hats, Ho Chi Minh, all I could think about was how he wouldn’t even be able to cope at the sight.Too much horror; too heavy of burden for the soul to bear. Miss you grandpa 🙏🏾

Simple they're not fit to fight i Think the required age was like 18-35 or 40 during nam. And actually many if not the majority of US Presidents is veterans the most obvious example being Eisenhower who was the fucken commander in chief of the allies in europe during ww2.

      God There’s plenty of evidence for God’s existence! For one, over 500 people saw Christ after his death at the same time, Dead Sea Scrolls, House of David inscription, multiple Roman documents confirming not only the existence of Christ, but about how the things said in gospels about his actions are accurate, and the simple fact the life cannot exist without a God, whether you use the Big Bang theory version with the first sub atom or finite energy, neither of which could not occur without a creator to set things in motion. Plus, the evils in this world aren’t his fault, they’re ours. It’s not his fault that people kill each other for no reason, and send their sons to die in wars, we mold this world, we’re responsible for it.

    My uncle was in the South Vietnamese artillery unit. He told me the enemy used to try to storm his base using civilians as their meat shield. He had to use smoke rounds to disperse the crowd. One time his unit captured a group of Vietcong, one of them said he'd rather remain captured by the Americans than to be returned to his former side.
    Every now and then the enemy would tune into his radio channel and they would start talking shit. Those are the best stories.

    Being British I am grateful my country stayed out of Vietnam. I have seen that wall in Washington and in 1998 I went to Vietnam. I cannot imagine the hardships that those poor American boys went through, the constant terror, never knowing when danger could come, the heat and the hostility of their own people when returning home. We must also remember the suffering of the Vietnamese and Cambodian people too, always under the constant threat of another air raid..I recall passing through the old DMZ and seeing cemetery after cemetery, all with Communist symbols over the gates, hundreds of young men, many little more than boys buried in each one, and I saw scours of such cemeteries. As I said I saw the wall in Washington, the names etched onto it, like the Vietnamese in the cemeteries I saw in Vietnam, the men behind the names on the wall were mostly young men, with all their lives ahead of them, back during the war these men and the ones buried in the old DMZ cemeteries were enemies, but no longer, now they are united, united in death and I hope in peace. . I remember a woman I met in Vietnam, I complimented her on her excellent English, she told me she had been married to a GI who promised to take her to America but he was killed in the Mekong Delta, so much misery and grief all around, civilians and soldiers from both sides, only time will heal the scars. Though my country stayed out of Vietnam and I know no one who fought in that war I give our American cousins my respect. My own father is dead now,(He died in 1998) he fought in Normandy in WW2, I remember he never talked about the war, most vets don't , they just want to forget, not wanting to be reminded of that terrible times in their lives. Yet I can still see my father with tears in his eyes when he watched on TV as the queen placed a wreath of poppies on the Cenotaph (Memorial) in London. 50 years on and the sight of the Queen laying the wreath still brought tears to his eyes, somethings a person never forgets, no matter how hard he tries. I believe all veterans are deserving of respect, whether they fought in WW2, Vietnam or the Gulf, for people like me who has never been to war we cannot even begin to imagine what the vets went through and with many of them are still going though, the dreams and nightmares that will torment them for the rest of their lives.

    Some trivia from a Vet site.
    - As of the Census taken during August, 2000, the surviving U.S. Vietnam Veteran population estimate is: 1,002,511. During this Census count, the number of Americans falsely claiming to have served in-country is: 13,853,027. By this census, FOUR OUT OF FIVE WHO CLAIM TO BE Vietnam vets are not.
    - Myth: Common Belief is that most Vietnam veterans were drafted.
    Fact: 2/3 of the men who served in Vietnam were volunteers. 2/3 of the men who served in World War II were drafted. Approximately 70% of those killed in Vietnam were volunteers.

    • @MajWMartin
      @MajWMartin 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +John Hersh It shouldn't surprise you at all. It's just a form of Münchausen. The person knows how these Vets were treated when they came back and knows how Vets are treated today and wants some of that attention. It's no different than wearing a hat with the logo of a sports team or racing team on it. Locally we had a fellow who had convinced his friends and neighbors that he served as a SEAL in the early 1960's. He was a Vet and received VA benefits but when he died it became clear he had lied about his age. He would have been in middle school when he claimed to have been incountry.
      Today in the US you can buy a hat that says your are a Vet and every checkout person and other worker you meet thanks you for your service.

      +MajWMartin sorry, no I know there's so many douche bags out there who walk around pretending they are vets and it pisses me off. But with my source question I was talking about how you said most people enlisted themselves instead of getting drafted, which I thought was the complete opposite

    • @MajWMartin
      @MajWMartin 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +John Hersh Sorry but at the time of the war the US still had occupation armies in Japan and Germany, as well as several places like Turkey, England, and most US territories. Draftees tended to be sent there because they would have less than 2 years left to serve after training while an enlistee would have at least have at least that time left. Oddly enough many draftees who served in Vietnam would sign on for a second tour because the difference between a combat zone and occupation zone was so great. The spit and polish of an occupation army just wasn't attractive to them. Not a majority mind you but far more than a few.

      My father is a vet. He rarely does any more than acknowledge he is a vet to anyone including his family. I understand why he has never missed a reunion.

    Much Respect. I used to think 17-18 if I was drafted I would definitely go, do my duty and become a man through war. Every young man tries to figure out what it means to be a man. I'm 23 now, and within that 5 years I've realized a man doesn't do what he thinks a man should do but does genuinely what he thinks is the right move to make. Being drafted at that young age is a horrible thing.

      @Alex What you said couldn't really be any further from the truth, but i'll still give you the benefit of the doubt. It's not even about the war itself, but the soldiers who fight in it. Based on your comment, it is clear that the men and women that serve have endured more sacrifice and raw pain than you and many others will ever in a life time. Some, even give their life away for the well being of our nation. It's a horrible job, but one that someone has to do.
      Now, before you run around saying ignorant, uneducated crap, understand that we are here because of war. Without war, our culture and society would be drastically different in a very negative way... So just appreciate your freedoms

    My grandpa is the most badass dude I ever met. He fought in country for 19 months as a door gunner and miraculously only got shot 3 times on different occasions. In case you're unaware, the average life expectancy for a door gunner is 5 minutes. 300 seconds. He owned a Harley Davidson for 25 years and has 50 or so trophies from competitions. He has a 1932 Ford Model T in his garage he restored himself and used to have a 1970s Dodge Challenger. I saw him cry once in my entire life and never again. He watched the opening scene to We Were Soldiers. To this day I can't imagine what these men went through.
    Edit: I worded it like he had died. He's still alive and is 72 years old. He suffered a bad stroke in November 2019 but has recovered very well.

    My father was a Vietnam veteran. He did two tours and was seriously injured 6 months into his second tour and almost did not survive. He was sent to a Walter Reed hospital and was able to recover from his injuries. He made friends there and decided to stay and live in DC with fellow veterans he met while recovering. My mother worked for Chase Bank in DC. It was there my parents met .
    I do not know a whole lot more about my fathers time in Vietnam. He rarely spoke about it. When I was about 15-16, he fell into a deep depression that doctors attributed to “a life-long struggle with Post traumatic Stress Disorder.” I would ask questions and he would answer as best he could, but very short and to the point answers. He never elobotated. And that was fine. I understood it was hard for him to talk about. I always just tried to be there.
    Thank you for sharing your story. I will be thinking of you and what you had to sacrifice in Vietnam.

    My uncle is nearly 70 and he still has the scars from his chest to his belly where he was shot a total of 7 times with a 7.62 during an ambush in Vietnam.
    Unk said he didn't know what to do when the shooting started until a round knocked his knee completely backwards then another grazed his neck, slinging blood all over the big bananas leaves. He said if not for his guys he would have died there. He got better but he also developed a heroin addiction that he said "eased the pain". He's still an addict to this day.

    • @djrocksgaming6255
      @djrocksgaming6255 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ray hanes He'd die no matter what. I call bullshit. If a round shot him anywhere on the neck it would have either completely paralyzed him, made it impossible to breath and he would have died from asphyxiation, or he would have bled out from one of the huge arteries/veins being hit. Even if it just skimmed his neck. Also with all of the other shots on top of that he definitely wouldn't survive that. Someone barely survived when taking much less damage than that in the war. He also would especially die from getting a HEROIN addiction after all of that and still continuing taking heroin to this day (where it's extremely easy to get arrested) and you wouldn't be talking about it because of how illegal it is.

That's not even mentioning the other risk that isn't health related with consuming illegal drugs. He's probably lying about what he got those scars from. There are a shit ton of things that can cause scars in combat besides getting shot. The sky isn't blue, it's clear but the nitrogen and other gases make it appear blue.
