One of my younger cousins recently joined the Marines, and while I will always worry for his safety if he is ever deployed anywhere dangerous (I held him in my lap when he was a toddler, and him and his younger brother have always been close to me), I have tremendous respect for his decision to join the military as well. My step-grandfather (whom I consider my real grandfather, as far as my biological maternal grandfather goes he can rot in a ditch for all I care after he just up and walked out on my grandmother and mother. My step-grandfather always treated me like I was his own flesh and blood, I only wish I could remember more of him, as he passed away back in 1996 when I was only 8 years old....tragically his own mother outlived him by several decades) actually served in World War II, and he was about to be deployed overseas when the war ended.
I see myself as a bit of a coward, as I doubt I would ever have the guts to do anything potentially dangerous, as I'm very cautious by nature, but I will always have nothing but respect and gratitude for not just the military, but law enforcement, the fire department, and any other occupation where an everyday potential risk to their lives and well-being is just part of the job.

Beaten by rice farmers and goat herding tribes with NO AIR FORCE, NO NAVY , NO SAT Comm... Participating in UNCONSTITUTIONAL BABY KILLING> Did you forget about that? We have LESS freedom since these Wall Street mercenaries have been "fighting for freedom" and nation building by destroying. The US involvement in the Nation Building has been a total WASTE. No existential national security threats. NINE undeclared UNCONSTITUTIONAL invasions the past 50 years. The US is 0-9 in these foolish nation building adventures. These are Wall St. invasions. Actually created the conditions for WWIII. The use of US military as "Nation Builders" is a complete FAILURE!

@sam singh That is not altogether true Sam. In my particular case, my parents were given care by my brother and I until the day they left this earth. My wife's parents as well. And in my wife's case she is disabled from a stroke. I have been her caregiver for the last 15 years. I had never at any time contemplated putting any of them in senior homes or rehab facilities. Was it due to respect? Yes, but love and duty to each other was taught to us from early on. It seems to me that only those with money offload those dependents on others. BTW, I served in the military 71-77.

Lots of people don't know that the Marine Corps is a division of the Navy. And we Marines respect and honor our Navy brothers, because they do so much for us. They are literally our transportation, our logistics and they take care of all of our medical, even out in the field. Many a Marine owes his life to the Navy Corpsman who stopped the bleeding while under fire himself and then dragged that wounded Marine to cover! To all my "squid" brothers, SEMPER FI!

I am an Australian Vietnam Veteran (Army) and I recently toured the USA and I wore my Vietnam Vets Cap. From the moment I left the aircraft I was amazed at the number of people, complete strangers that came up to me and either hugged me or shook my hand and said thank you for your service. There wasn't one day in the whole 4 weeks that someone didn't come up and say thanks. In Australia we have a lot to learn about those that served.

Arthur, I am a US Navy Vietnam Vet. I have lived in Australia for the past 20 years. I think it took the Twin Towers for Americans to appreciate their servicemen.
I was never thanked for my service until a visit back home after 911. Then I was thanked by friends who knew me before I enlisted, and were my friends afterward, but it was like they just wanted to forget the war and forget that many of us served. I have to tell you the first time someone (an old high school friend) thanked me and acknowledged my service, it hit me hard, but in a nice way.
Mind you, I had a hazardous job, under tough conditions, but I didn't have anyone shooting at me.

Although, as an Aussie, I know we don’t have that same patriotism that the US has, that doesn’t mean what you’ve done is any less appreciated. I’m sorry you feel that way but please know a “thankyou for your service” will never do you justice for what you’ve done. I wish I could do more than leave a comment and give thanks, but I truly hope you know exactly how thankful we all are for what you’ve done. Love from a regular young Aussie who feels forever indebted to you for your service. X

Magic Fishing Charters hey man, thankyou for your service! I know that a small comment can’t do you justice for what you’ve done, but please know you are so appreciated. Your comment has intrigued me immensely. I’ve always been interested in the relationship between other servicemen(Americans/Europeans etc) and how they view/their relationship with Australian soldiers. Would you mind elaborating on why Australians were some of the toughest guys you’ve met? I don’t hear much about it and would LOVE to know how men view Australian soldiers. So much love, thanks and respect to you Sir! Xx

It was a political loss, but militarily, the Americans whooped the Vietnamese asses, US had 58,000 killed, the NV had more than a million killed, so who whooped who ass. It was wrong that too many people who were against the war did not support the men who fought it. Your dad should have had a parade. I wanted to be a chopper pilot and was in Air force ROTC, but my eyesight wasn't good enough. I dropped out to let them draft me the 1st year of the lottery. I was 1 weeks worth of numbers from being drafted when Nixon came on TV at the end of August and said no more numbers would be taken. There went my GI Bill college. I went to work in a defense factory building mobile communications units for Nam and had a Secret clearance. I slowly turned against the war because of the rules of engagement. Our fighter planes couldn't take out a SAM site in the North because they might kill a Russian advisor. So the SAMs would shoot down our planes and the NVA would send the pilots to the Hanoi Hilton to be tortured. Our troops never lost a battle, but they were never allowed to win the war. I am proud of all of our warfighters and honor their service. It was the Generals and the politicians I despise. Astan proved they learned nothing.

I love what they did. I'm a VN vet also. I once saw a vet from WW 2 and I asked him about his service. He was a marine at Iwo. I almost broke down and cried. I know what they went through, my uncle, (God bless his soul) was there also and told me many a story.
They were of the Greatest Generation, you won't see this happen in the US ever again. I saw that he and his wife had finished dinner, so after I left his table, I told the waiter to give them both a piece of pie and ice cream, tell them it's from another vet. Yes, we vets have a common denominator. Even from the Vets of the 1940's men that enlisted to fight WW 2, to today. We have gone through boot camp and gotten our asses kicked and handed to us.
    We learned RESPECT.
Even here in Costa Rica, where I live, when they find out I am a VN Vet, they even thank me for my service. Evidently, the kids learned about VN, I'm proud to be a Vet, even though our country is going to hell in handbasket.
There is an old movie that I wish all of you could watch, it's called "The D.I." with Jack Webb. The part in the basketball court where the commander meets with the mother of a troop that wants out, she say's NO, my husband was a Marine who died at Guadalcanal and I want my son to be a Marine. He will not fail. You will make him a Marine. You will cry, trust me.

I was young when the Vietnam War ended but I remember that the soldiers returning from that war were not treated very well by people at that time. These were men who did their duty and did what their country and their government asked them to do. Like all soldiers who go to war they gave up a lot, watched their buddies get injured or die and endured horrific events. They did no less than soldiers from any other war and yet the people of this country, at that time, treated them poorly. It is so nice to see soldiers of that war getting the respect they should have gotten from Americans, at that time. You can hate war all you want, but respect the soldiers.

I joined the Marine Corps, for two reasons: first, my grandmother (first generation American) said this country is worth fighting for. Second reason, is the job the Vietnam Vets did.

I am a Vietnam veteran, and in the last few years have been thanked so much for my service, it has reached saturation level. I prayed to God about this and He said, "People have a need to thank you for your service. So go on and receive it." So to any Vietnam veteran who reads this post, the respect and recognition bestowed on me equally applies to you as well. I just happen to be in their cross hairs.

I'm an old, retired vet. Three kids, four grand kids, and seven great grand kids.
I get a lot of folks say to me "thank you for your service".
Only other vets will ever know how much that means to me.
But a few years back, my daughter gave me a wonderful gift. Like many folks teach their kids, she taught them to say that "thank you".
But what she had also done, without input from me or knowing beforehand, was to ask her kids to ...........if they saw that the vet was a Vietnam vet, in addition to saying "thank you", also say: "welcome home".
I wish that kind of kid on everyone.

Lou, Sir, veterans occupy a large space in my heart and while i respect all veterans, Vietnam vets stand in my mind because i was a child during that time and the way people treated them was more than shameful. it has been my practice to not only shake their hands and thank them for their service, but to extend a hearty welcome home. God bless you, whether you were drafted or enlisted you went there so that i never had to. i'm eternally grateful.

You deserved the kind treatment. The way our country treated most of the Vietnam Veterans when the war was over was terrible. Every one of my friends and family that returned from there were never right. They all saw such horrible sights while in Vietnam they weren't right in mind. I just lost one of my cousins, he is finally at peace. Thank-you for serving our country and GOD bless you.
