You don't. Those days have been over for decades. Its why most NHL teams conveniently have a CHL team like Oilers with the Oil Kings and Flames with Hitmen. Its so families can go to hockey games, get their kids hooked on hockey and maybe one day blow a pay cheque going to a NHL game.
Not really a curse having big contracts. It's a curse having big BAD contracts. Nurse is one (for the Oilers) as are the buyouts that linger for years.(Neal and Campbell.).
@@Dorian803 You're right you want that "star". But most teams even non playoff team are at or near the cap. To quote a former MLB GM, "It isn't the high cost of stars that hurt you, it's high price of mediocrity ."

Yes, exactly. Edmonton has to win this upcoming season because McD, Drai, Nurse and Bouch will have salaries that tie-up about 50% of the cap. HALF the cap. There's no way they can flesh out the rest of their lineup with only $40-$50 million to spend on 19 other players.
@@hockey_all_star5895The Leafs let go of those 15 players so they could keep those 6 players. So it isn’t brain dead, it’s a trade off expecting a few players to bring the same value as a deep well balanced team and the experiment hasn’t worked at all against the best teams in the playoffs so I’d say it’s a fair point.
Oilers will always be competitive until playoffs. Edit: It's the classic "don't put all your eggs in one basket". You want a more balanced team. I seen a statistic showing how Montreal was in last place and had like 1 player hit ppg in last 20 years, compared to other Canadian teams that have had up to like 9. But in the same time span, Montreal had the most playoff series wins of all Canadian teams. This includes all of the years with core four Toronto. Look it up.
If any duo could win a cup with 30+% cap tied up its McD and Draisaitl. However, the '09 Pens didn't have a Nurse-like contract. Their two best defensemen in Gonchar and Letang weren't making much compared to their value at all (Tanger might've still been on the rookie contract). Staal was also huge for that run so maybe playing Nuge at 3C could help spread the love better
I'm convinced every GM is aware of this, but many of them are not concerned with winning the cup but filling seats by being good enough go on playoff runs, at least on paper.
Nurse is their Tavares. Pens never had a bad contract during their cups. Almost every cup team with a ~10m player on it has been earning their contract at the time of the cup: Kucherov, stamkos, Crosby, Malkin, ovechkin, bobrovsky, tkachuk, Tavares is good but an 8m player at best. Nurse is good but a 4.5m player at best. Cannot win with those types of deals. It’s not draisaitl, McDavid, Matthews, Nylander or marner
Marner gets way too much hate. He got 85 points in only 69 games played this year. And his playoff record is 50 points in 57 games. He's no Draisaitl, but dude is 100% worth $10M.
@@Xavier-016It’s not about what Marner brings to the table in the playoffs or any of the other core four players, it’s about what the team is sacrificing so they can keep all four players on those huge contracts that is the issue which is lack of quality depth.

Yeah but you can't totally compare Tampa and Edmonton, cause in Florida are so much lower taxes, so players here could demand less money contracts and it's easier to spread money to others correctly
Good vibes good video. With Leon signing this type of contract. I am a really scary thought of a drama filled season from Edmonton and Mcdavid on his high horse being traded to other Canadian team or LA
Federov was paid 26 million one season during Detroit’s heyday which is still far and away most any player has ever gotten paid in a single season in the NHL.
The reason why Tampa Bay is able to pay their stars under market value is because they are a no income tax state. 9m goes a lot further when you don't pay state income tax.
True, but Tampa Bay is also probably the most well run team in the NHL with a fantastic and winning team culture and excellent coach. It's not hard to see why a competitive player would want to go there.

The Oilers also can't afford to lose them with the fact that they attract the other talent to the city, these two players carried the team into relevance, and if they left, there's no reason for another player to try to replace them and give a good deal to Edmonton at the same time.
