They did get the right players. All they needed was more scoring and they went out and got two of the best ones in free agency. You can argue they need more scoring depth, but I don't know how much you can improve. Something tells me there'll be a coaching change or the team will somehow figure things out.

There's one thing I find quite baffling. Everyone is talking about Nashville's struggles despite what they gained (Stamkos/Marchessault), but I don't hear anyone talking about what they lost. Neither of those star player acquisitions make up for losing Ryan McDonagh. He's the best stay at home D man of this generation.
Rangers w/ McDonagh - perennial playoff team and legit contender 2013-2016.
Rangers w/o McDonagh - Immediately plummet to last place after trade.
Lightning w/ McDonagh - Upgrade from contender to league wide scourge. 14-3 record in playoff series
Lightning w/o McDonagh - Lose to the Leafs in 6, Cats in 5. Bad defense and inability to hold lead were key factors in both losses.
Predators +/- leader w/ McDonagh - Ryan McDonagh
Predators +/- leader w/o McDonagh - Trick question. There are no +/- "leaders" here.
Anyone that's watched his career will tell you that he belongs in the hall of fame when it's all said and done. He may not have sexy stats outside of his ridiculous career +/- but his impact has been significantly felt by every team he's played for.

They're certainly not in a good place now, but I think a lot of their poor play has been a case of underachieving. They recently beat the Jets pretty convincingly! If they play with half the intensity they played against Winnipeg, I think they'll look closer to the team everyone thought they'd be at the season progresses.

It's not totally his fault, but the team is floundering, and firing a coach is a proven way to light a fire. I think they'll get rolling, and maybe even go on a bit of a run to make up for lost points. Its a combo of bad puck luck, low team confidence/moral, and getting a lot of new faces to gel. If they can get it going, this team still has all the potential to be very dangerous come playoff time. They just gotta start getting some points.

You can get great reinforcements and compliments and maybe even a star, but you can't just throw money at a bunch of 30-somethings that never played together and think that fix anything. The Rangers tried this same exact thing pre-lockout and ended up being so financially fricked the salary cap was implemented as a result. The Predators simply aren't a team, their a bunch of individuals. Whatever chemistry O'Reilly's presence brought has completely deteriorated.

There are a few outliers like the 2020 Bucs (Brady, JPP, Suh, Gronk) and the Shaquille 'O Neal led Heat dynasty. You probably have better odds at a reverse sweep than building a championship All-Star Free Agent Merc Squad.
I think this is especially true in hockey. Every dominant core from the last 20 years was built from within.

Even most NBA superteams built through sign and trades and the like rarely work out. The KD Kyrie Brooklyn Nets are one of the worst collapses in recent sports history and same for Kobe and Dwight.
Sacrifices have to be made to win championships, and sometimes that involves putting your ego aside, and some players simply won't do that.

who said they were rebuilding ? they have never really been a scoring team - have never really had a proven scorer besides Forsberg in the history of the franchise. So they went out and got two - not to drive the team - they are additional scoring - to take all the attention away from Forsberg . Skjei is a 2nd pair Defenseman that can move the puck - and again take some of the load off of Josi. That is not rebuilding - that is supplementing an already good roster - something has not worked so far. I have not watched their games so I can't really say what the problem is - I know that I am a strong up the middle guy - and as much as I like Ryan O'reilly I would be pretty nervous about sending him out as a 1C night after night at this point in his career. He has always been a below average skater - he has always made up for that in other areas - but sooner or later that has to catch up to you - as a 2nd or 3rd line center - taking defensive draws - fantastic but 1st line 20 min/ night - That's tough

Chicago is surrounding its youngsters with veteran players to protect them and help them develop. It’s not about winning now, it’s about imparting skills and traits on players so that they can win 4 years from now.
Nashville expected to win now. Not a few years down the line. Now.

Ok I admit I was among those who said the Preds were going to be a top 4 team in the NHL (and a guarantee to make the conference finals in the playoffs)... This is a good reminder however that no team in NHL history has been able to go far without chemistry, roster balance, and a team identity (as a long suffering Leafs fan, I could write a book on how it's a bad idea to keep 'core' players who don't have what it takes to win together when it matters....
My HOPE for Nashville (because I like the team) is that they'll figure it out internally....but if need be let's hope they don't pull a Shanahan, Dubas, or Treliving by keeping a 'rotten core' together if it isn't working. The 'best' players aren't always the right players (I wish more people would understand this isn't basketball)....

Marchassualt, Stamkos seem to bring nothing Predators need. It's not the first time big trades or contracts fall short, but it feels bad for the predators that actually had a good young team and bright looking future last season... just to end up with anchor contracts.

    • @NoDiddy-x5
      @NoDiddy-x5 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Stamkos was one of those 'name' signings who was living off past reputation. He's now a PP specialist winger, who had massively inflated numbers by Kucherov. Defensive liability when not on the PP, and declining with age. Useful in the right situation on the right team for about the $3M or so TB offered him. But an albatross at the $8M the Preds gave him being relied on to carry a 2nd line. Marchessault is a decent support player with Eichel and Stone caliber players, but Nashville doesn't have that for him. And he's getting up there in age too

As a VGK fan, I am glad the Preds gave Marchy the contract he wanted. With the guys we "lost" and dumping Lehner's salary from the cap, we have some breathing room. Hey, maybe Stoney won't need to be on LTIR from February 😂

Knew this was going to fail as welll bringing in a bunch of old guys on the back end of your career is a terrible idea especially when they already have cups so they don’t have much drive to win one.

As a Jets fan, this has been fascinating to watch. In 2022, Trotz was the #1 choice to coach the Jets. He turned them down. Then he goes on to join the Preds and sign huge players. At the beginning of the 2024/2025 season, the pundits were raving about the Preds. On paper, the predictions were the Preds would do very well and the Jets may make the playoffs. After 17 games, the Jets are #1 in the league and the Preds are #28. Wow.

From 2009 to 2011, the Predators had a very nice navy blue alternate uniform that had the skull of a saber tooth tiger as shoulder patches. It also had a checkerboard pattern inside the stripes. They even unveiled a white version that was used only once at a charity event. I thought those were going to be the primary uniforms but they went with the ones they have now. I have that alternate jersey and it's the only Preds jersey I own because I don't like the others.
