They were dominant in the clutch and calm in the clutch in a way that was almost comical. Even when they lost they tended to take a bite out of whomever - they weren't an easy out. I saw an image w game 6 records of all the teams from like 06-20, the Blackhawks were 15-1 in game 6. Even the best other teams were barely over 500. They were 15-1. 2011 they were the 8 seed, down 3-0 to the 1 seed eventual runner up Canucks, took it all the way to game 7 overtime. 2012, clutch late wins vs AZ then the all time cheap shot on Hossa took the heart out of them the end of that series. 2014 down 3-1 to LA in the WCF, Kane carried them to game 7 OT where they lost on a bad bounce and bad officiating. 2013 back from 3-1 down vs Det to win it, had the game winner taken away at the end of regulation, won in OT anyway; they were also down a goal in the 3rd period in game 6 on the road in that series, facing elimination. Won anyway. Down 2-1 to Boston, won the series 3 straight (multiple OT and comeback late wins). Down 2-1 to Tampa, won the series 3 straight, choked the life out of them. Tied 2-2 w Anaheim in 15 WCF, down 2 goals w a minute left in game 5, Toews scored twice to tie the game and send it to OT. Hawks LOST in OT to go down 3-2. STILL WON THE SERIES. Like where other teams would have been demoralized or folded, they very rarely did. 2016 down 3-1 to St Louis, forced game 7 and lost by 1, in the 3rd. 2013 WCF game 5, Kings tied right at the end of regulation. Hawks didn't care, won it in 2OT anyway to make the finals. 2010 Cup finals, Philly rallied from 2-0 down to make it a 2-2 series - Hawks didn't care, momentum meant nothing, they won 2 straight to end it. In game 6, Hawks think they're about to win the Cup, Philly ties it with 4 minutes left, has all momentum. Hawks don't care, win in OT. 2009 2nd round vs Vancouver, game 6, Hawks w a chance to clinch, they blow an early 3-1 lead, Vancouver goes up 4-3 in the 3rd. Hawks tie it like a minute later wo flinching. Vancouver then takes the lead again with 8 minutes left. Kane scores less than a minute later to tie it again. Toews scores less than a minute after that. Kane then puts them up 2 w a famous goal to end it. 2010 1st rd vs Nashville, game 5 of a 2-2 series, Hawks are down a goal and shorthanded w under a minute left, about to go to Nashville down 3-2. Kane ties it w 15 seconds left. They win in OT. 2013 stanley cup game 6, down a goal w 1 minute left, Boston expecting to go back to Chicago for game 7, Hawks score 2 in 17 seconds to win it.
There has never been another team like this. Not just in the cap era either. Ever. There is dominance but dominance can be quite boring. The dynasty Hawks were never boring. They were always or often enough anyway facing legitimate peril. It never felt or looked easy or automatic. But they would almost always do it when it mattered, to a degree no other team has ever done it. My theory on this is that Patrick Kane is the main catalyst, I believe he's the most clutch player in hockey history and the calmest and most confident in big situations and I believe he infected his entire team. There had already also been clutch work from Toews prior to being drafted, so he had it. But it became the whole team. If you watched Detroit late last year btw you can see Kane infecting THAT team too. They started doing crazy clutch stuff, all kinds of guys not just Raymond. Being around a player like that and seeing how he is in the big moments just - instills it in others. Takes away the nerves and the fear that normally are involved. Or so the theory goes.

I like this analysis very much. It'll be hard for any team to give their fans a product that good ever again. Like you said, dominance can be boring. But the flavor of dominance those Blackhawks delivered was a level of sports entertainment that is unlikely to be reached again. I'd like to see your theory discussed on the relevant subreddits

They were never eliminated in less than 6 games aside from first making the playoffs in 2009 and last making the playoffs in 2017. They also never lost in the Semifinals, never in the Stanley Cup Finals, and only once in the WCF after Detroit.

Not mentioning Hossa and the other 2 really good defenseman they had in Hjarlmasson and Seabrook is a disservice to those guys and all those GREAT trades they made at different points in their cup run. Trading for Sharp, Versteeg, and Ladd. Drafting Saad and Shaw. Then some of those midseason trades for like Oduya, Handzus, Frolik, and Vermette who all had huge moments. They played the 2015 playoffs with pretty much 4 defenseman, a 5th who played sparingly and a 6th who barely saw the ice.

sports is entertainment. when it's that automatic it loses the entertainment. nobody ever really got tired of the dynasty Hawks, bc they were always incredibly dramatic, and would actually lose - but dramatically, and always after dramatically fighting their way back. and their wins were just as dramatic and did not feel quite inevitable, even if maybe they were - unlike the later Lightning whose 'clutchness' always felt inevitable and easy and contrived, like how top NCAA football teams never quite lose even when ostensibly threatened.

man i was so truly blessed to grow up watching this team. my dad had to wait the full 49 years as he was born just a few months after their 1961 cup win. that’s why i honestly can’t complain too much about their performance the past few years. it just feels ungrateful to complain when i literally got to come into this world and watch a team be great that just years prior was a dead franchise. they’ll be back on top someday.

I remember watching the Toews and Kane era of the 2010s when I was young at that time. It also got me into watching sports, Toews and Kane were my first two favorite sports athletes that I liked, and will always be my favorite Blackhawks players of all time. Man it was so fun to watch them play and bring three Stanley Cups to the Windy City in the 2010s during my childhood. It was so amazing! We had a great run! Also, bowman should’ve never traded Artemi Panarin to the Blue Jackets for Brandon Saad back in the summer of 2017, that’s when the dominos started to fall, they went on a downward spiral following that. If Bowman didn’t trade Panarin, we would’ve been a playoff team for at least 3-4 years and added 1 or 2 more cups to the 2010s dynasty. Hopefully the Bedard era will be like the Toews and Kane era. Go Hawks! ❤️🖤

I was in a fortunate enough position growing up that our family business had a split of a box at the United Center from ‘98-‘10 and got to watch the truly dark times of the Hawks (and Bulls), but also get to see their emergence. I literally couldn’t give tickets away to Hawks games in a few of those years. But getting to be there for Toews, Kane, Keith, and Seabrook taking off, was truly amazing. We had the tickets if 2010 went to game 7, and I remember being in a bar in my hometown, and while I was ecstatic that Kane snuck that goal in to win the series in game 6, I was a touch disappointed that we weren’t going to be able to be in the building for game 7. But my god, were they awesome to watch. That building would be pure electricity when the nuclear line of Toews, Kane, Keith, Seabrook, and whoever would be the 5th between Hossa/Sharp/Big Buff, because everyone knew that the play was ratcheted up and a goal was incoming. Dammit, it was the best.

Been watching and following hockey for over 20 years, and gotta say no team could control and dominate a game like the prime time Hawks. They’d put on a puck possession clinic. Also Kane favorite player, and funnest to watch. I know now u got McKinnon and McDavid, super fast, but NOBODY could manipulate a defense, do so lot with so little, either slowing down, stopping up, changing angles, delaying, like Kane could. He slowed the game down to the pace he wanted it

This was the greatest thing to happen to Blackhawks hockey but came with a dark side. Because our core players were so good (def and Offense) many of our 1st round picks didn't get the playtime their talent deserved. Thus they were traded to other teams. We had great minor league player development but no time to play them. (Salary cap didn't help either). I had season tickets to the Rockford Icehogs (AHL to Chicago) for 7 years. I saw the talent before they came to Chicago. I would say names but don't know how to spell many of them so won't try. Great times to be a Blackhawks fan.
