  • TestDriveNow .com Video Review by Auto Critic Steve Hammes. It's been 4 years since the last time the 3 of us packed-up and headed south for a little R&R. Now, this may come as a surprise but I don't really relish driving over 22 hours on I-95 even if it is to sunny Florida. But just like last time, I've summoned the help of a GMC to make the voyage a little easier…or in the case of the Yukon XL Denali, a lot easier. MSRP as-tested: $80,890. testdrivenow.com/2017-gmc-yuko...

    This is the kind of car you let someone else drive for the first 2-3 years and then pick it up for 1/2-2/3 the original msrp.

      KentB27 I'm looking at a XL Denali and ESV this weekend. Both 2015 models with higher miles but they're half the price of new ones. Plus they run forever. My 03' has 238k and is still solid. I'd buy it new if I had the budget for it but it's going to be used either way even if you are the original owner

    Steve, I wish I was your age again so I could take the NJ to Fl trip more with my now grown up and gone family, these are moments to cherish and enjoy cause they don't last very long, trust me. God bless you and yours.

      Thanks, Pedro! I was thinking the same thing on this trip...how Maddie will be a full-blown teenager the next time we're likely to do anything like this again. Now, she still likes to hang out with mom and dad, but next time? Not likely. So I really tried to cherish the father/daughter moments in particular.

      I'll be completely honest; I remember that test (purple) but don't recall my specific opinions. I'll have to go back and watch ;-) But, I think I remember enough...didn't like the boxy styling, probably thought the interior was too truck-like and not $80k SUV-like...all points I tried to make again here. Also, I used this tester in a very specific way and for the tasks I handed it the Yukon was nearly flawless.

    Steve I remember in 15 you were not impressed with ride and in escalade you even mention how magnetic shocks do these SUV's no favors. But the 17 you tested you said rode great. So I am curious, did GM improve suspension in your opinion?

    • @stevehammes
      @stevehammes  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's possible that the Escalade has a different tune for the suspension or perhaps a different wheel/tire package then this Yukon XL but the ride quality here is above reproach.

      I have owned 2 Yukon XLs ... my current one is a Denali and has almost 250k miles on it. The first one literally saved my life in a hit and run accident from a monster truck hitting me from behind coming out of a drinking establishment. He was obviously drunk and hit me going at about 100mph. I knew it when it happened, then insurance adjuster confirmed that to my husband just by tell-tale damage to the vehicle. I miraculously walked away from that accident with only a mild concussion which went away over the following day. No long term or neck pain or damage. Back of my car absorbed the impact so what I experienced at the front of the car was minimal. In any other car I would have been severely hurt or most likely worse. Makes you prioritize what is important in a vehicle after going through an accident like that. I would probably not be here today if it had not been for that car. We got another after that, next one Denali, and it has also been a dream of a car, drives just like was reviewed here. It is the ultimate in road trips. I have made 2 trips from Houston to upstate NY, NYC, and also drove to Boston, DC, Atlanta on those 2 trips before returning home. My elderly mother with poor health rode with me the second trip and loved it. Our entire family have made multiple trips more than I can remember to count, from Texas to Georgia visiting family over the years. We just took this trip a month ago over the holidays and all 6 of us rode together, with all my children being grown as the youngest is 18 now. Our two dogs were with us also, and one of them is a tall 70 lb boxer/Great Dane mix.
      This car is so comfortable I could just about live in it. Our family jokes about that and my kids make it their home away from home when they were picked up from school to go directly to after school activities. My girls grew up changing in the car on their way for dance class, completed homework in the car, and I prefer to drink my coffee or even have a meal there rather than going in restaurants, we all feel that at home there. My husband and I have even pulled over to catnap on long trips when we are tagteam driving. Actually this car has probably saved us quite a bit on hotel rooms because it is that comfortable to sleep in. Of course nothing beats getting horizontal in a real bed, but this car and its seats are close to the next best thing. My mother slept most the trip as I drove us back from NYC to Houston, and we had a great time together stopping at landmark restaurants and sights along the way, like the Biltmore in NC. She was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer so these experiences cannot be replaced and I have absolutely loved this car for all these reasons. My kids have loved this car and hated when we had to have rentals or loaners. We all have many many happy happy memories spending time and life together that having this car offered our family. Nothing else has been able to compare. It is my dream car, and the only thing I wish could be better is the gas mileage, but then, it is a big heavy car and that is a great feeling when driving it. It does require certain care in handling it: you can't do anything fast in it, because of its enormous size and weight it will not respond quickly! Brakes can wear out quickly too if it is driven like an average size car. This car definitely demands civilized driving, but it is a highly civilized car. It is a dream and drives like one! I have LOVED this car! Never thought I would ever say that about a car, but I can about this one, so I do.
