  • The Hopewell Method, Purdy Prescription (calculation), Stiller method and several abbreviated and short cuts to those mentioned, these can all be found by visiting the various rimfire oriented sites.
I chose to give the Hopewell Method a try with the V22 and a Harrell Tuner.
I did not find a source for who Hopewell is, how long ago the method was developed or whether it was tested by engineers or gunsmiths in the know. A few shortened versions were touted. I decided to take the long hand version to the range.
    1. Use the quality ammo that will be used in match competition.
    2. Set tuner to "0", fire two shots.
    3. Turn tuner 25 clicks, one complete revolution and fire 2 shots at same POA.
    4. Continue this until "100" is reached. This will comprise a 10 shot group, all at the same POA.
    5. Repeat steps for "100" to "200".
    6. Repeat steps for "200" to "300".
    7. Repeat Steps for "300" to "400".
    8. Repeat Steps for "400 to "500".
This completes five, 10 shot groups.
    9. Look; for the group that displays the least amount of vertical stringing.
    10. Example: The "0" to "100" group shows the least vertical stringing.
    11. Starting at setting "0", shoot 2 five shot groups, each 5 shot group having its own POA (bull).
    12. Repeat at settings; "025", "050", "075" and "100".
    13. Pick the setting with the best average vertical group size.
    14. Example: Setting "100" showed the best average vertical group size.
    15. Setting "100" selected: Shoot five shot groups, individual POA bulls for settings "90", "95", "100", "105" and "110".
    16. Select the setting with the least vertical stringing.
    17. Example: Setting "90" shows the smallest vertical group.
    18. Next, shoot a five shot group for each of the following settings:
    "87", "89", "90", "91" and "93".
    19. In this example setting "93" has shown the least vertical stringing (and the smallest group size), and can be declared as being the "sweet spot" for this barrel with tuner, with this lot ammunition.
    20. Having basic understanding of barrel harmonics, sinusoidal wave characteristics, resonance frequency and importance of nodal location as projectile leaves the muzzle makes for a more enjoyable experience when working with a tuner.
