Phyllis should have been sign to a jazz label like Verve Records. She could have definitely had a successful jazz career. I mean, look at Patti Austin. She had success in both jazz and R&B. Patti Austin also had Quincy Jones. I think Quincy would have known what to do with Phyllis musically. All Clive Davis cared about was selling records. He didn't make a effort to try to understand her as an artist. "You Know How to Love Me" is one of my favorite songs by Phyllis Hyman. Whitney was 19 when Clive signed her and she didn't have a lot of control of her career. She did what her father who was her manager and Clive wanted her to do. Phyllis was a full grown woman who made her voice heard. If she didn't like something, she would speak up.

And yet despite her being as outspoken as she was, she still wasn’t able to be as successful as her talent deserved because she was unable to get as far as she could. Plus, most female artists who did become successful - Whitney, Diana, Janet, Mariah - were all babies when their careers took off at 19, 20, 21. Phyllis was 30. So of course there was a strong contrast.

You Know How to Love Me nearly struck gold! Top ten dance hit and top 20 R&B hit and gave her wide attention for the first time.
Phyllis really was her own worst enemy. Miss Ross the Boss knew not to talk crap about her producers in public. Phyllis was a TRIP!!!

I agree that they take advantage of tax refund time to fund the tours. I hate that people don’t realize that.

In my opinion, Phyllis should have been treated like a Diahann carroll. Diahann also a cancer was more Jazz than R&B, and actress. Phyllis did Broadway, so she had the ability to act. Hate to say it, but it seems like Phyllis was determined to self-destruct.

El Diablo was cold-blooded. It seems that he and Thick Thighs Childbearing Hips Diddy have that in common. Both seem to have a lot of little pickle energy. 😂
    Phyllis is exhausting though.

Diddy gained POWER which is better than hits when your life is deep rooted in the occult. People were afraid of him for a reason and not just being able to stop careers.

In my humble opinion I think Phyllis Hyman would have been more successful & more appreciated in Europe than in America. Clive Davis was the wrong person to be managing Phyllis. Clive was either too focused on selling records or trying to make his Black artists sound more VANILLA with less soul & rhythm to placate to the wider WHITER rhythmically watered down tone deaf audience.
