I love how you explain what a polymath is in an academic way “on paper” so to speak… my experience of the education system is very different than yours. One semester in high school I got 5 D- grades and one F this was right before being expelled! I have been successful in business, I’m an excellent cook, I’m a successful stock option trader, I’m a general contractor and built 6 custom homes, I can operate heavy equipment, I am also a welder/ fabricator and I have several other interests I would like to pursue. I think experiencing and doing the thing is a much better way to learn. For me this has always led to the next thing. Thanks for your video I look forward to hearing more!

Now, I understand why I'm a lifetime learner at 69. Almost everyday for twenty years I memorized students names as part of my lesson plan as I walked into the classroom. It was very cool for the kids to see.

When you switch to another topic on audiobook to give yourself a mental break from what you're mainly studying the day, can that book be something fictional? Or vice versa?

    • @AnthonyMetivierMMM
      @AnthonyMetivierMMM  14 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

I certainly switch to fiction as part of my own interleaving.
However, it's rare that I read fiction without some kind of purpose. If I want to be entertained, I go for a walk, play a card game (with physical cards) or practice card magic, play the guitar, etc.

One problem I've been facing is what exactly to study. I worry that maybe the subject I want to study is too broad, or maybe it's too obscure to be useful. Do you have any ways of picking your disciplines?

Being Bipolar has naturally made me a polymath. Nine years of college and 2 years of Navy Nuclear Power School all without a degree. I learned chess to 1500 and was successful at online poker and many other things. And then I came down from my Manic Episodes and dropped things. Oh well. I know lots about lots of things I shouldn't know about. This video is important for me. I really need to get on a structured program.

I have never heard of this term. If someone had asked me what it is, I might have said it is a person who knows many levels of math. I suspect that could be a functional definition of a person who know math at many levels.
How much of this is inherited trait? I think of my dad, who was building an airboat of his own design. I was in the 1st grade and he had a problem that he spent hours trying to solve. I looked at the problem for about 2 minutes and gave him the solution. He was stunned. So inherited?
Are philosophers more likely to be polymaths? Critical thinking is at the core. Too bad we have so little of it now.
I just have questions now and I love this video.

    • @AnthonyMetivierMMM
      @AnthonyMetivierMMM  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

I don’t know if there ate answers to these questions, but my dad is also a genius builder. I have inherited none of those manual skills, but talking with him has provided great exercise in critical thinking.

All my nephews are this way. I think it is a mild form of ADHD, attention deficit due to the practice of our devices. The longer your attention is exposed to these devices the shorter your attention span becomes. As the years go by reality will become distorted. So limit your time from devices and engage in real manifestations.

One big question How can we tell if we’ve become a polymath?

    • @AnthonyMetivierMMM
      @AnthonyMetivierMMM  17 วันที่ผ่านมา

Because polymathy is involved, it's multi-layered, but ultimately very simple, you will display:
Diverse knowledge and skills: You have expertise or significant proficiency in multiple, often unrelated fields.
Intellectual curiosity: You have a strong desire to learn about various subjects and continuously expand your knowledge.
Ability to connect ideas: You can draw insights by linking concepts from different disciplines.
Adaptability: You can quickly grasp new concepts and apply your knowledge to solve problems in various domains.
Creative thinking: You often generate innovative ideas by combining knowledge from different areas.
Ongoing learning: You actively pursue knowledge in multiple fields throughout your life.
Practical application: You can apply your diverse knowledge to real-world situations or create tangible outputs.
Recognition: Others may acknowledge your expertise in multiple areas.

I have two questions, first why dont you go live anymore ? I love ur prior eps and have also listened to some them multiple times especially the ones concerning meditation and depression...fellow suicidal thoughts guy here. Second is there any possibilty of u reaching out to Sam Harris to be on his podcast? Ive been using the waking up app for two years and it has truly helped with my "unvictorious mind"at the moment. I think it would be a phenomenal meeting of the mind . I will also advise who ever works at the app to get u on, im pretty sure im not alone in this desire...keep up the wonderful work that ur doing, some of ur lives have helped me in some dark times..your book also has giving me hope, and once again thank you👍👍

Glad that I've been able to help in some way!
There are lots of reasons I stopped live streaming, but most videos now launch as premieres and I hang out in the chat. It's generally more effective, though I do live stream once a month still in the "MMM Mastermind" group which is sometimes called "The Inner Circle."
Thanks for the kind words regarding getting on this podcast. I currently make no effort to suggest myself to be on any shows, but perhaps if enough other people do, something like that might happen.
In the meantime, I've actually scripted a new guided, memory-based meditation that I'll probably release soon. It will work just fine on any app that streams audio. Please stand by and warm wishes for an amazing year ahead!

Hello Anthony and thank you for your video. I am going to share my experience for people like me,
experimental people. And sorry for my english. I listen to it, I read it, never write, never speak.
I had trouble with learning japanese, with passing more diploma in maths for myself, and trying to
pass on math to my students (i am a maths teacher for teenager between 11 and 15 years olds, it’s
« le collège » in France). I ended up on youtube watching video about PAO system and mind palace
for counting cards. I gave it a try and in less than 2 months and with little work, I etablished my
record at 172s. At the beginning I planned on giving myself to the end of this year 2023 to pass
under the 180s, but now my record is 150s, and i am still under 2 months of training.
So I went for foreign language. I never learn spanish so by combining vizualisation and memory
palace I am trying to learn only vocabulary. In less than 10 hours of work I can give 423 words over
the 550 I have learned without watching the french part (nor the spanish part) just by parcouring my
stories and my palace. I « encode » about 100 words in 40 minutes, then i need 20 minutes to pass
them all once again. Then, if I respect my forgetting curve, i need less and less time.
I started without a palace, but I write stories down with all the association I was making in my mind
to remember the word and his meaning. It went fine for the first 100 words and then I had trouble
making association and remember it. I think it was because I let to much time between repetition.
Then i created a palace. I took my childhood house and the entire village and I planned on creating
a palace with 500 loci and put 4 words by loci, creating a story on each loci, connecting the 4
words. For now, it’s too much. I remember 2 or 3 words, rarely the 4th.
I tried to put 4 cards in 1 loci to, to go faster by putting on other object on top of the PAO, kind of a
    PAOO, didn’t work for now.
So I went back to 3 words per loci. Not easy either because it’s only noun in my 2000 words the list
I find. It still feels confusing.
I will finish my 2000 words in spanish, then I will go for grammar during a months, adding a bit of
vocabulary each week (verbs!) and do my active recall on the 2000 first ones.
For the third and last month, I am going to do a « immersion » by watching a lot a spanish with
subtitles. That’s actually how I « learned » english. I went to bad at highschool to the first group in
College, just by watching all the Friends and Scrubs episodes in english with subtitles in a week or
two (don’t remember). But I had the basics in voc and grammar to do so and absorb the dialogues.
Then I will be starting everything over with german wich I’ve learned when I was young (instead of
spanish) but almost forgot everything. This time, I will prepare a list of vocabulary in a NVN
system « noun, verb, noun » so my stories, hopefully, would be easier to remember.
Because sometimes, with 4 words by loci, I remeber my story, by not for wich word I did it, or how
the word is prononuce, or I have the idea of the french word, but cant’ connect his translation with
    my picture.
Since I am experimenting, I decided not to write down my storires anymore. Too much time. It
does’nt feel necessary. Because if you do your active recall, you don’t look at your invention, so if
you forgot it, watching your invention or the word, it changed nothing because your association
comes back looking at the spanish word.
A other problem is finding association between the spanish word, his translation, and the image you
can make to remember it. Now I am also trying number. I am sharing my idea, I hope it’s not a bad one.
I took my P of heart from my P-A-O system for card, 10 of heart is my 0, the ace is 10 the 2 is 20
    etc.
Then I took my A of clubs so that 11 is my P ace of heart and the A of the ace of club, 58 is my P 5
of heart, and 8 is my A 8 of clubs.
70 is my P of 7 of heart, and 0 is my A of 10 of clubs.
This system goes from 00 to 99.
Then I took my O of spades to have a system from 000 to 999.
518 is a colleague playing soccer with maraca.
I am trying now to add a special cloth to do a PAOC system.
5181 is my colleague playing soccer with maraca and a hat on his head.
5189 is my colleague playing soccer with maraca and wearing overalls.
I am afraid I will create some kind of interference with this system… I am learning my phone
contact number to see what will happen.
I hope all of this can give motivation and ideas for others.
    Best regards,
    EK.

I’ve read some articles on LessWrong, but not the forum so cannot say. It would be fascinating if reading a forum could teach critical thinking without any external reading needed, that’s for sure.
If you search ‘critical thinking books’ on my blog, there are several recommendations. And reading as much as possible and taking care to think reflectively is highly recommended, always with caveat emptor in mind as we carpe diem.
I’d also suggest getting in plenty of writing about a variety of issues into action, as well as many verbal discussions as possible.

@@AnthonyMetivierMMM Well, it specifically refers to a series of essays called Sequences, which conveys the essence of rationalism or so I’ve been told. I was planning on doing external reading regardless of the content but I don’t know if the rationalist approach, even though it goes hand and hand with critical thinking, would lead to a different path than a more traditional approach of raw critical thinking.
And yeah I’ll definitely check the blog out when I get free time.

Does a memory palace have to be inside? Or could it be a biome? Like a wetland with a wooden walkway with a number of short offshoots, each one is different. And you can drive a mind car to your beach, or a mountain, desert, etc?

    • @AnthonyMetivierMMM
      @AnthonyMetivierMMM  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

All of these options are possible. I usually don't use them because they are relatively indistinct in my mind compared to walls and corners.
Ultimately, it comes down to your goal. I only use outdoor locations when I'm certain that they won't be fiddly. There's an example of the one outdoor Memory Palace I used for my TEDx here:

Does this additional resource make sense and my answer help you out?

Hey Anthony I am curious on how I can apply memory palaces to my life? I am really focusing on learning how to learn this year. However Is a memory palace usable in all areas? Ie i want to learn spanish, piano, and how to read faster, how can a memory palace make this better and increase my knowledge?

    • @AnthonyMetivierMMM
      @AnthonyMetivierMMM  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There are many applications.
I’m a musician myself and have a few videos about music in the FAQ section of the MMM Masterclass. It’s not the core focus of the program, though. Music is inherently mnemonic, so learning how to transform most instruments into Memory Palaces doesn’t take long.
Language learning is a strong use case for words and phrases in any language.
Then there are speeches and other verbatim texts, facts, numbers, anatomy and even fun applications like chess and card games.
I have a separate program for reading faster. Memory Palaces will help with one aspect of reading faster in particular, but there’s more to it than that.
One kinds of material do you want to read faster?

@@AnthonyMetivierMMM mainly being able to read for retention mainly non-ficition, psychology, philosophy, so being able to implement/ and use/ test over what I read at a higher level.

      Great areas to be in.
Frankly, I'm not sure reading faster is always the ticket with topics like these. With philosophy in particular, I think Nietzsche got it right when he said that reading more slowly was the key.
I think the problem people tend to have with philosophy is not setting up the foundations first and/or not having enough international foundations. Work on that, and much else will snap into place faster through pattern recognition with the help of Memory Palaces for quickly absorbing key terms and figures.

Hello Anthony Metiever!I am a history student and I need your help!I learnt the method of loci and mnemonics and now I heard from others about photoreadind method!Do you think that this method can help me in learning historical textbooks/books?They tell us that we can read a book in 10 minutes by using this „photoreading"technique?I need your opinion about this situation!Thank you very much!

    • @AnthonyMetivierMMM
      @AnthonyMetivierMMM  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

I've never heard or seen anyone demonstrate photo reading. Nelson Dellis and I just recorded something about how he's exposed people for trying to demonstrate this.
The weird thing to me is why people would use such a tired old metaphor. Why not shoot for the James Webb telescope reading technique?
I'll tell you one possible reason why:
Perhaps people using these techniques don't actually read enough to have an imagination enough to come up with more contemporary metaphors... and that's assuming they actually read at all.
      Your thoughts?

I suggest not asking for it to be easier, but doing what it takes to get better with memory techniques.
Here's a tutorial to get you started on dealing with historical information in books:
