The joints of my knees began to hurt, then the joints of my shoulders, and after some time the joints of my hands. I was diagnosed after I had an ultrasound and donated 4 cones of blood (for HIV, for rheumatoid factor, C-reactive protein, and so on).
The idea that osteoarthritis is caused by simple mechanical "wear and tear" is outdated. The current theory is that it is caused by a degradation of the joint due to a combination of non-mechanical factors such as inflammation and metabolism. See for example Abramoff & Caldera (2020) for more information about this.
