Its like you read my mind Clint. I have just started trying to figure out blending modes and this video is both informative and simple. Everyone else goes over all the modes and don’t really explain the ones to use. Thanks for this and keep the video’s coming. Liked, and shared. (already subscribed)
I've recently started using Gradient Maps. They aren't technically a layer mode, but they work great in combination with layer modes. I also like adjustment layers. This video is really helpful and I'm going to share it because so many people are confused about how layer modes work.
I think it is important to do little breaks and stretch yourself from time to time (I recommend the pomodoro technique, it is a good one), this also might help you to avoid tendinitis which is a common thing among artists.
A common mistake is having your subject (monitor or canvas) being higher or lower than your natural eye level. This makes your body, namely your neck and shoulders, have to constantly hold a looking up or looking down position. Raise or lower your subject so you don't have to tilt your head. Also, make sure your desk and chair heights work out so your elbows naturally rest at the height of the desk. If it's too low it will cause you to lean over to reach it but if it's too high it will force up on your shoulders and cause problems. Hope this helps -Clint
I have to recommend the monitor at the proper height and distance away from your eyes, and a good desk and chair. I was having horrible back problems and turns out it was my chair. Also, if you use a display tablet, make sure it's at the proper height and angle. Mine was too low for a while which made me crank my neck down.
Hands down this is the best video that describes the topic well. So underrated, I come here from time to time since I tend to forget the layer modes.
Thank you so much for tossing out the extras right off the bat. This topic is hard enough.
Understood every word. Don’t know why I complicated them so much !!! Well done !
Burn is a good way to add shadows as well.
What dodge is to screen is what burn is to multiply
as a beginner artist.. this is soo helpful!!
I've been looking for a video like this for ages, thank you for explaining everything from a practical point of view!

Yeah, Adjustment Layers are great, use them all the time.
Great content, helpful, on the spot, well explained. Just as we expect of you
Color dodge is also very useful mode. Especially for painting glowing and fire effects...
Ahhhhh, Yes! QwQ I always have problems with it, I am so happy you did a tutorial on it!
Great video! Thank you for sharing how you would use each layer mode!
Thank you Clint, great video! A practical guide with useful tips from a professional is really helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
You are a great teacher
What blend mode should I stick to, if I wanted to replicate the traditional painting procedure in digital medium?
Normal.
This is super useful information, especially with the examples of usage!
Thank you Clint! This was so clear and helpful!
Thank you so much for sharing these valuable information 🌸

Thank you for the valuable tips!
Really nice video. I finally understand the blending mode. Thanks Clint. Don't you use color dodge ?
On rare occasions but most of the workflows I follow don't make use of it.
Any tips for ergonomics? avoiding back and neck pain during painting?

Very useful! thanks
Thank-you!

No color dodge. Ross is crying xD awesome vid tho
Not sure if you already done a video, but I would love to see your thought process of going from grey scale to color in PS
I do have an old video about it but I've learned more about the topic since then. I'll jot down the idea for a future video ;)
You are a great teacher and an exceptional artist, wishing you the best always for helping us out!
