    So can I do this with joint compound? Or do I have to mix my own plaster?

    • @michaele1201
      @michaele1201 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      good question, fast set joint compound would probably work, but once it is set up, it is difficult to sand and reshape, but it would be stronger than plaster. You noticed Tommy was rewetting the plaster and smoothing the shape. Doubtful you would be able to do that with fast set.

    • @singlepointdc7749
      @singlepointdc7749 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Don’t take my word for it, but consider using Plaster of Paris. Mix it in with a little regular joint compound, 45 or 90 minute setting compound to extend the working time. Vary the amount you mix in to get the setup time you want. For making a molding in multiple lifts, maybe about 1 part PofP to 2 parts 45. That’d give you about 20 minutes of working time. Let dry and spray with water between lifts. Make a donut and mix the parts wet.

    I stole Tommy's idea but I used a plastic knife and made my pattern on it to accomodate a 45 degree angle instead of a 90. I built the 90 first and thought the 45 would work so much easier. Don't tell Tommy, but it did.

    When I worked on my house I did the same think. Except with a more steady guide. The reality is that plaster swells the longer your working it, so your for ever trying to scrape it level. The other thing is like in the video its never straight. It wobbles and weaves. The original crafts men were artisans.
