To those saying that Dream Theater is too inconsistent, they are progressive metal. Not all of their songs are going to sound the same. They are very much a band that musicians like myself can get into, because it is never the same, they are all virtuosos on their instrument, and the mixed time signatures are awesome.
I've noticed people who don't know about Prog just kind of don't get it. Apparently it's a hard concept to grasp that an artist can have a changing sound
lol wtf, dont bring anything new =/= meh. Master of puppets didnt bring anything new so you think thats a meh record. Train of thought didnt bring anything new so that makes it meh. K then.
I only liked Octavarium (the song) too out of that whole album. Then I started to suffer from depression and panic attacks and suddenly These Walls and Panic Attack hit me, as if I've never heard them before. I understand you might not like the album, but just put it on every 6 months or so and see if you still feel the same. People change :)
Octavarium is just style exercise. The latest DT disc with true influences and incredible remarkable compositions is SDOIT. The rest is "pure nothing and empty" well played. IMHO. ...and sorry for my bad english. ;)
Vaati the Wind God same! I sometimes wonder if I'm the only one who likes this band. A lot of my friends don't care for music/bands like Prog Metal/Dream Theater, then all of a sudden, Watchmojo makes a Top 10! My favorite of DM's songs is The Spirit Carries On--glad it's on here
I feel you, I go to concerts alone because my friends don't like any music I like xD But hell, I'm not going to stay home because my friends don't know what good music is!
Mike Portney is a great man, he helped my favorite band, Avenged Sevenfold, finish their Nightmare album after the Rev died.... He is also a amazing drummer.
Everything in that song gets you. I know it does to me. It's not like the song or the story behind it but my dad lives 2000 kms away and I miss him very much.
My top 10: 1) six degrees of inner turbulence 2) octavarium 3) the count of tuscany 4) the ministry of lost souls 5) metropolis 6) breaking all illusions 7) the dance of eternity 8) space-dye vest 9) a change of seasons 10) in the name of god honorable mentions: stream of consciousness in the presence of enemies
Metropolis 1? I don’t really consider any of the tracks in Metropolis 2 to be in any “top 10 list” because I consider the album to essentially be 1 song.
there is no way to justify the pure genius of dream theater. they have helped me through dark times in my life and the only good thing i took from my relationship with my biological father. these guys are amazing people. i would love to meet them someday and meet others who share my love for dt.
This is propably the best WM list I have seen. Its not easy to choose only 10 Dream Theater songs but here's my opinion. 10. Glass prison 9. Panic attack 8. Home 7. Dance of eternity 6. Pull me under 5. In the name of god 4. Count of Tuscany 3. Change of seasons 2. Metropolis part 1 Honorable mentions: Take the time, Spirit carries on, Space dye vest, Six degrees of inner turbulence, Breaking all illusions, Illumination theory 1. Octavarium
MaximumPayne12 In fact, no songs from ADToE? Such underrated album. Breaking all Illusions, Lost not forgotten or Bridges in the sky definitely deserved a spot on the list
My top 10 Dream theater songs as a personal list: 10. Endless Sacrifice 9. The Answer Lies Within 8. Stream of Consciousness 7. One Last Time (Scene Seven - Metropolis: Part II.) 6. Home - (Scene Six - Metropolis: Part II) 5. Panic Attack 4. The Spirit Carries On (Scene Eight - Metropolis: Part II.) 3. In the name of God 2. Octavarium 1. The Count of Tuscany
Yes, it's my favorite song by DT. But now, looking at this list, I'd probably scrap Panic Attack for Trial of Tears, and scrap One Last Time for Finally Free, and then I'd scrap Home for Ministry of Lost Souls, but the fact still remains that Count of Tuscany is still my favorite DT song.
zimbo1221 My list is literally changing all the time and its hard to put any in order. but here is my attempt. 10. The looking Glass 9.Constant motion 8.Stream of Consciences 7.The Shattered Fortress 6.Lost not Forgotten 5.Fatal Tragedy 4.The Mirror 3.The Dance of Eternity 2.Breaking all illusions 1.The count of tuscany
+zimbo1221 there are too many amazing songs for 10, so here are my top 20: 20. Panic Attack 19. Another Day 18. Lie 17. The Mirror 16. Breaking All Illusions 15. The Glass Prison 14. 6:00 13. Pull Me Under 12. This Dying Soul 11. The Shattered Fortress 10. The Dance of Eternity 9. The Best of Times (best guitar solo ever) 8. Learning To Live 7. Finally Free 6. Home 5. The Count of Tuscany 4. Metropolis Pt. 1 - The Miracle and The Sleeper 3.Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (disc 2, it's one song so it counts) 2. Octavarium 1. A Change of Seasons
Heh, I'll follow your lead and do a top 20 myself. 20. Anna Lee 19. Far from Heaven 18. Another Day 17. The Root of All Evil 16. Vacant 15. Home 14. Illumination Theory 13. Overture 1928 12. Endless Sacrifice 11. Octavarium 10. Stream of Consciousness 09. The Best of Times (as well.) 08. These Walls 07. A Change of Seasons. 06. In the Name of God 05. The Ministry of Lost Souls 04. Metropolis Pt. 1 - Miracle and the Sleeper. 03.Trial of Tears 02. Finally Free 01. The Count of Tuscany Even now, as this list is complete, I see a lot of songs that I like, but couldn't fit in (As I am and Sacrificed Sons) to name a few, but that is what is so awesome about DT, even though you have a top 20 there are so many others that you love all equally. That's why they're one of the greatest bands of all time imo.
MistahLightningBolt it's a good single, especially when you wanna show people who don't like metal a cool band like Dream Theater. While Octavarium is not my favorite, Pull me Under is on a good spot
A surprisingly decently put together list. A Change of Seasons, Metropolis, and Octavarium being represented makes me extremely happy. However, not Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence? C'mon, that 41 minute epic is fantastic!
I don't think they put Six Degrees on there either because they may not have realised it's intended to be one huge track or possibly because most of the songs function as individual pieces out when taken out of the whole 41 minute masterpiece
Could this be the end? Is this the way I die? Sitting here alone No one by my side I don't understand I don't feel that I deserve this What did I do wrong? I just don't understand Give me one more chance Let me please explain It's all been circumstance I tell you once again You took me for a ride Promising a vast adventure Next thing that I know I'm frightened for my life Now wait a minute man That's not how it is You must be confused That isn't who I am Please don't be afraid I would never try to hurt you This is how we live Strange although it seems Please try to forgive The chapel and the saint The soldiers and the wine The fables and the tales All handed down through time Of course you're free to go Go and tell the world my story Tell about my brother Tell them about me The Count of Tuscany PURE MUSICAL BLISS.
TheMetalGaia One Masterpiece of a song. I recently bought all of their albums and I mut admit I have a new favourite band. Their music is so emotional and forcefully
Is it just me or does part of that melody sound like a throw back to Octavarium? I also I have a feeling that this is a known fact and I just made myself look dumb. :)
The Great Debate is one of my favorite DT songs. Love the Portnoy video showing only him playing along with the music. His mastery of dynamics and feel, along with his showmanship is top -notch and a joy to watch.
One of my favorites is Surrounded. It got me through some hard times and I think it’s just beautiful all together. Another Day, Untethered Angel, Through Her Eyes, Our New World, Fatal Tragedy, the list goes on and on. So glad I found this band. They’ve truly changed my life.
1. Octavarium 2. The count of tuscany 3. In the presence of enemies 4. Illumination theory 5. The dance of eternity 6. The enemy inside 7. Metropolis part 1 8. The best of times 9. Finally free 10. Vacant - stream of consciousness
I was hoping to see "The Best of Times", either in it's full or instrumental form, on this list somewhere. Besides the backstory behind it and the fact that it's the last song Portnoy wrote for the band, it's got the same early 80's rock feel to it that I love. And that guitar solo? I mean, really, it's hard to ask for a better one.
1. Octavarium 2. The Count of Tuscany 3. Illumination Theory 4. A Change of Seasons 5. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence 6. Metropolis Pt. 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper 7. Panic Attack 8. The Glass Prison 9. Home 10. Breaking All Illusions But that's my opinion (:
I like your top 10. I remember not so long ago when I heard Octavarium about 1000 times in a year (as iTunes counter read). It used to make me frustrated that I could not share this band with no one, (the same story that we all read here from people who dislike DT). But now I don't really care and keep their music as a privilege to myself. For example, all New Year's Eve I hear Stream Of Consciousness so its ending matches the fireworks in the sky, like they did un Budokan.
1. Octavarium 2. The Count of Tuscany 3. Panic Attack 4. The Test That Stumped Them All 5. A Change of Seasons 6. The Dark Eternal Night 7. A Nightmare to Remember 8. Shattered Fortress 9. Solitary Shell 10.The Spirit Carries on 11. I Walk Beside you (Couldn't do just 10! I tried! I count all of Six Degrees as separate tracks, considering they are all about very different things. That's just me, though.)
honorable mentions for this list: in the presence of enemies in the name of god these walls the great debate hell's kitchen finally free the best of times space-dye vest scene two: overture 1928 & strange deja vu the bigger picture
Everyone always seems to forget The Count of Tuscany and I have no idea why. It tells an interesting story and has wonderful musicianship. I know in this list they include it, but in other lists people never put it in the top 10 and I can't understand why.
"Learning to Live" and "Another Day" both have a special place in my heart because that's how my wife and I connected when we first met online. I had a combination of those two songs in my head and after chatting, I discovered that not only did she have those songs in her head but that her Facebook page quoted "Learning to Live." "To ride the wings of dreams into changing horizons." This line was incredibly meaningful to us both as we were both coming out of bad relationships only to find each other with a connection to a band that wasn't popular, but who had a very loyal following of fans. Dream Theater will forever be our special band because of this. I was hoping that "Learning to Live" would be #1, as it is my absolute favorite Dream Theater song (with Metropolis and Pull Me Under slightly behind it). However, this video has inspired me to go back and revisit Octavarium.
That one of the things I love about Petrucci. The set up he has and the riffs he is able to play sometimes you can't tell if it's the keyboard or the guitar.
God, you FINALLY made this. Every time i see a new top 10 songs video come out i always find myself screaming MAKE A DREAM THEATER ONE!!!! at my computer.
My top 10- Stream Of Consciouness 9- Panic Attack 8- The Spirit Carries On 7- The Count Of Tuscany 6- Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulance 5- Home 4- Metropolis Pt 1 3- In The Name Of God 2- A Change Of Seasons Honorable Mentions: Pull Me Under, Dance Of Eternity, The Glass Prison, Honor Thy Father, Breaking All Illusions, Learning To Live, Eternal Sacrifice, These Walls 1- (And said with me) Octavarium
Let's add my personal Top-10. 10. The Glass Prison 9. As I am 8. The Ministry of Lost Souls 7. Learning to Live 6. Home 5. The Count of Tuscany 4. Six degrees of inner turbulence 3. A Change of Seasons 2. Metropolis pt.1: The Miracle and the Sleeper 1. Octavarium
PLEASE, you all need to understand, this is a coffee band. You need to develop a mature taste for it before you can get sucked in. I honestly didn't like the singing till about a few months in but now I understand how it all just fits. Out of all the metal bands I've listened to, none has been more rewarding for me than Dream Theater. This is Dream Theater, this is there sound. it wouldn't be them without LaBrie (singer), and especially without Rudess (keyb). The band transformed when he joined and completed their signature sound.
BOOM! You just said it. You're so right about the things you mentioned, especially about the members. I kinda liked your comparisson to coffee. Sounds interesting. :D
One of the more mature and well thought out comments on here that summarizes Dream Theater well. Yes, LaBrie has good days and bad days but he's an integral part of the DT sound in my opinion. He suits them perfectly... it's why he's still their lead singer and people like Charlie Dominici or Chris Collins are not.
"Especially without Rudess". That is a completely subjective statement. The fact you enjoy post Rudess dt more over pre-Rudess dt does not mean he in anyway completed their signature sound. Their sound had dt signature written all over it ages before rudess arrived. Dont put Moore down.
@@olastrax2 moore was only there for 1 album, there was even someone before him. I think his point is they've had the most success/longest run with Rudess, not that the others are bad, but he has seemed to provide more for dt/work better with them.
Hmmm... Just off the top of my head. 10. The Great Debate 9. Home 8. Afterlife 7. Breaking all Illusions 6. Under a Glass Moon 5. Honor Thy Father 4. A Change of Seasons 3. ...In the Presence of Enemies... 2. Space Dye Vest 1. Metropolis I: The Miracle and The Sleeper
Never thought I'd see the day dream theater got recognized (again) on a more commercial scale. I'm a huge DT fan and I feel Mojo definitely brought some justice to this list. Thank you Mojo keep surprising me with your always intriguing top 10's.
People should try listening to the whole 12 Step suite. With the years between the first and last song it is brilliant how the recurring motifs work even with some of them having a motif which links it to the album it is on. It's a really strong set.
I love listening to Rush but I hate listening to this band( no matter what they do or how good it is)-learning to live, pull me under, voices and silent man is all that I believe I like from their catalog.
My Top 10 list or so...: 10 Under A Glass Moon (I&W) 9 The Glass Prison (6DoIT) 8 The Spirit Carries On (SFAM) 7 One Last Time (SFAM) 6 Illumination Theory (DT) 5 Root of All Evil (8varium) 4 Breaking All Illusions (ADToE) 3 A Change of Seasons (ACoS) 2 Octavarium (8varium) 1 Learning to Live (I&W) Im actually surprised Learning to Live is not mentioned. Not even in the comments...
10. SCARRED 9. TAKE THE TIME 8. THE COUNT OF TUSCANY 7. BREAKING ALL ILLUSIONS 6. THE SPIRIT CARRIES ON 5. SIX DEGREES OF INNER TURBULENCE 4. METROPOLIS PART 1 3. LEARNING TO LIVE (my favourite song ever) 2. OCTAVARIUM 1. A CHANGE OF SEASONS
I was actually surprised to see the only Dream Theater song I know actually get an honorable mention. I'm not a fan, I don't know their music, but I listened to the incredibly long "In the Presence of Enemies" because I was a big fan of the Korean comic book series (manhwa) that inspired it (and the 2011 movie which was good but didn't follow any of the original story), "Priest". But after this video, I may give the band a listen.
1. In the Presence of Enemies 2. Octavarium 3. Change of Seasons 4. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence 5. Bridges in the Sky 6. The Shattered Fortress 7. In the Name of God 8. Constant Motion 9. As I Am 10. Illumination Theory It's hard to rank my favorites but if I really had to, I guess that would be it.
Don't miss these other great videos, Interview with Dream Theater Top 10 Heavy Metal Bands Interview With John Petrucci of Dream Theater Top 10 Avenged Sevenfold Songs
I must admit, I'm a little sad that they didn't include "Honor Thy Father" in this top ten list because it is really a beautiful track full of insecurities and the drummer is singing throughout the song, regardless of the crazy time signatures and beats.
Greatest band in the world. Not the top 10 list I'd have put together, but considering I don't know any two Dream Theater fans who'd have the same top 10 on their lists, it's no surprise. And these are still all fantastic songs, so great list! More people really need to listen to this band.
My Top 10 Dream Theater Songs 1. Octavarium. 2. A Change Of Seasons. 3. Metropolis-Part 1 'The Miracle And The Sleeper'. 4. The Glass Prison. 5. The Ministry Of Lost Souls. 6. The Count Of Tuscany. 7. Home. 8. Take The Time. 9. Illumination Theory. 10. A Nightmare To Remember.
I do know that on Learning To Live on the one part where you hear James really soar vocal wise. Right before that really emotional guitar solo. It is great for me to warm up with before I sing. It is an absolute adrenaline rush to belt that part out.
Not a huge dream theater fan but I thought space dye vest was a really emotional and soulful song. Not one of there huge hits but it's what first made me aware of them.
Each of these albums is inextricably tied with specific times and events in my life. Listening to them is like taking a journey back through my memories.
Songs like on the backs of angels, Outcry, Misunderstood, The Hollow Years, Home, Space Dye Vest, This is the Life, Repentance, The Enemy Inside and the Illumination Theory also deserve recognition !
My list (I found it quite a challenge to make): 1. Octavarium 2. A Change of Seasons 3. In the Presence of Enemies 4. The Glass Prison 5. Learning to Live 6. Scarred 7. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence 8. In the Name of God 9. Voices 10. Stream of Consciousness Honorable Mentions 6:00 Erotomania Hell's Kitchen Lines in the Sand Metropolis Pt. 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper The Spirit Carries On The Dance of Eternity Take the Time The Count of Tuscany Trial of Tears
While I don't care too much for songs like As I am (God, Labrie was horrible in Budokan) or Panic Attack, this is quite a nice list :) A Change of Seasons, Octavarium... and I always tear up at Spirit Carries On. What this list really needs is more Images & Words.
Octavarium is far from my favourite song by Dream Theater (personally my favourite is As I Am) But Octavarium is EASILY their BEST song.... Such amazing musicianship. Aside from Queen.... Greatest fucking band ever.
Rick Scott i see what you mean there. Although I love octivarium, I understand that. Kind of like the Warning album is my favorite of green day, but American Idiot is easily their best album
Mi fav. songs: 10.- Behind The Veil 9.- Wither 8.- Honor Thy Father 7.- The Great Debate 6.- Burning My Soul 5.- I Walk Beside You 4.- A Rite Of Passage 3.- Metropolis Pt.1: The Miracle And The Sleeper 2.- The Best Of Times 1.- Home Honorable Mentions: 6:00 Caught In A Web Lie Another Day Hell' Kitchen Through Her Eyes
10. As I am 9 . The Dance of Eternity 8 . The Glass Prison 7 . The Count of Tuscany 6 . The Spirit Carries On 5 . Pull me under 4 . Panic Attack 3 . A change of seasons 2 . Metropolis pt 1 1 . Octavarium
Amazing band. Arguably the most talented ever. I'd go for Octavarium, The Dance of Eternity, Metropolis pt2, Learning to Live, A Change of Seasons, Outcry, In the Presence of Enemies pt1, Erotomania, Endless Sacrifice and Trial of Tears
Pretty good list, here's mine: 10. Erotomania 9. Glass Prison 8. This Dying Soul 7. Octavarium 6. Under Glass Moon 5. As I Am 4. Panic Attack 3. Dance Of Eternity 2. Strean Of Consciousness HM: Wait For Sleep, Voices, Lie, 6:00, Take Away My Pain, Spirit Carries On, Count Of Tuscany, The Looking Glass 1. Metropolis
It's not easy to make a top 10 for a band that's being out for almost 3 decades, but you did a good job! I can't agree or disagree with the whole list, but to me their best song is A change of seasons to which I feel personally linked to since the first time I've heard it!
Everyone's adding theirs, so let me add mine too: 10. In The Presence Of Enemies 9. Barstool Warrior 8. The Count Of Tuscany 7. Wither 6. 6:00 5. Spirit Carries On 4. The Dark Eternal Night 3. Breaking All Illusions 2. On The Backs Of Angels 1. Under A Glass Moon Favorite Band of All Time❤
Here's my list: 10: As I Am 9: Another Day 8: The Count of Tuscany 7: Panic Attack 6: Under a Glass Moon 5: The Ministry of Lost Souls 4: Metropolis Pt.1 3: The Glass Prison 2: A Change of Seasons 1: Octavarium Honorable Mentions: 6:00 Pull Me Under Space Dye-Vest The Enemy Inside
1) Pull Me Under 2) Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence 3) Octavarium 4) On The Backs Of Angels 5) The Spirit Carries On 6) Another Day 7) Strange Deja Vù 8) A Change Of Seasons 9) Panic Attack 10) Metropolis Pt. 1 That's mine.
Coconut Crab Well, considering I did this two months ago, when I knew almost nothing of DT, your comment is actually accurate hahahahah But my top 10 now is this: 1) Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence 2) Octavarium 3) Metropolis Pt. 1 4) The Glass Prison 5) The Dance Of Eternity 6) Panic Attack 7) Home 8) Pull Me Under 9) A Change Of Seasons 10) As I Am
I saw these guys last year when they did their astonishing album in concert. it was the greatest day of my life. then they came out after and did as I am, spirit, and pull me under. I sang along to every song
10. 6:00 9. The dance of eternity 8. Innocence faded 7. As I am 6. Metropolis PT.1 5. Caught in a web 4. A change of seasons 3. Another day 2. Six degrees of inner turbolence 1. Octavarium
I personally can see why tons of people our talking about their tastes of certain Dream Theater styles. There have been many styles that Dream Theater has evolved through over like the past 20 years. Personally, I like the list, I like long songs. It's a good list, I love and own every Dream Theater album.
No other band comes close to the benchmark of music these guys have set for me. I couldn't have asked for a better singer for this band, including every other member. Amazing!
Whoot Whoot Mike Portnoy!!! I could talk all day about Dream Theater, especially all the songs that they missed but I guess it's a little hard to fit 30 songs in a top ten list :/ However The Count of Tuscany should be higher, and a couple songs should be on there: Home, Stream of Consciousness, Honor Thy Father, and Six Degrees of Inner Turbuelence (40 minutes of epicness). Dream Theater is definitely one-of-a-kind and reshaped progressive rock, and truly will go down in history as the most technically proficient band of all time, with their examplary song-writing and musicianship and variety of style. Long live Dream Theater! I hate yet to see them in concert though :(
My personal top 10 10. The Count of Tuscany/ In the Name of God 9. Take the Time 8. Breaking all Illusions 7. Illumination Theory 6. Metropolis / Finally Free (I can't decide between the song that started the whole story and the one that ended it all) 5. The Spirit Carries On 4. Learning to Live 3. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence 2. Octavarium 1. A Change of Seasons ( best song ever)
My list 1. Octavarium 2. A Change Of Seasons 3. Metropolis Part 1 4. Six Degrees 5. The Glass Prison 6. The Best Of Times 7. The Ministry Of Lost Souls 8. The Count Of Tuscany 9. Home 10. Outcry
I thought for sure 6 Degrees would be #1. It's 42 minutes of some of the best they've ever done. Maybe they're not counting it as one song, even though it definitely is on the actual album (of the same name). They rarely play the whole thing live, but they did on the Score DVD, and it was awesome.
1. A Change of Seasons 2. In the Presence of Enemies 3. Finally Free 4. Learning to Live 5. Blind Faith 6. Lines In the Sand 7. Octavarium 8. Hell's Kitchen 9. Breaking All Illusions 10. Scarred 11. The Glass Prison 12. Metropolis Part I 13. Beyond This Life 14. 6:00 15. Illumination Theory 16. Peruvian Skies 17. Under a Glass Moon 18. Home 19. Voices 20. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
Funny how this video is shorter than some of the songs they talk about.
HAHAHAHAHA
shorter than most
Lmao that's why people love DT
Accurate
shorter than the glass prison by about 23 seconds for example
To those saying that Dream Theater is too inconsistent, they are progressive metal. Not all of their songs are going to sound the same. They are very much a band that musicians like myself can get into, because it is never the same, they are all virtuosos on their instrument, and the mixed time signatures are awesome.
I've noticed people who don't know about Prog just kind of don't get it. Apparently it's a hard concept to grasp that an artist can have a changing sound
Octavarium is 35 years of history of prog rock all in one song.
lol wtf,
dont bring anything new =/= meh.
IMHO.
...and sorry for my bad english. ;)
Come one guys, both Dream theater and Metallica are the best in their sub genre. Let's enjoy both of these bands' music.
Deepen Wadhwa I agree!
I don't care about some of my favourite songs not there, I'm just happy because this Top10 of this great band has been made
Vaati the Wind God same!
You are definitely not the only one who listens to Dream Theater.
EchoSappho, same...
Me: do you know dream theather
Friend: no, it's certainly crap if you listen to it.
Me: ...
Friend: imagine dragon is better
My circle of friends love Dream Theater. As to why we get along so well. lol
So, glad that The Count of Tuscany is included, this song gets overlooked too often, one of the best later day DT song.
Samit Paudel that song is overrated tbh.
ALL OF BCASL SHOULD BE ON THIS LIST. Actually just Tuscany, nightmare, fortress, and maybe times
Blind Faith should've been on instead imo. that song is beautiful
ShayMan Eh, I liked Wither too
Dr. Joseph: Pwner of Metallica Fagboys the best of times solo is "decent"?
Mike Portney is a great man, he helped my favorite band, Avenged Sevenfold, finish their Nightmare album after the Rev died.... He is also a amazing drummer.
*Portnoy*
My favourite will always be "Learning to live"
Amazing song. Memorable too.
James LaBrie's F#. Such an exhilarating feeling, hearing it live.
Absolutely!!
We share opinions dude
Such a good fucking song. It carries such an amazing atmosphere.
The Best of Times should of at least been an honorable mention in my opinion. That solo gets me.
Everything in that song gets you. I know it does to me. It's not like the song or the story behind it but my dad lives 2000 kms away and I miss him very much.
that solo, that lyrics, that music overall is great. portnoy knew how to make great music.
it should be the 1
The Best of Times is such an emotional song that I am incapable of listening to it because I will cry a puddle of tears.
Gawd-damnit, not even ''Another Day'' or ''Take The Time''
10. Every Song on Scenes From a Memory
9. Every Song on Scenes From a Memory
8. Every Song on Scenes From a Memory
7. You get the point...
1. Metropolis part 1
;)
JustusBProductions You mean "their most overrated album ever"?
Fabio Riato most overrated? Easily their best album to date. Not a single weak song. And the story and writing are their best work.
+Lane Adler You can say that about several of their albums if we're going by 'not a single weak song'.
Adam Destructor Jr. "and the story and writing is their best work".
My top 10:
1) six degrees of inner turbulence
2) octavarium
3) the count of tuscany
4) the ministry of lost souls
5) metropolis
6) breaking all illusions
7) the dance of eternity
8) space-dye vest
9) a change of seasons
10) in the name of god
honorable mentions:
stream of consciousness
in the presence of enemies
Now that's a decent list
Daniella Oliveira where is best of time ?
Metropolis 1? I don’t really consider any of the tracks in Metropolis 2 to be in any “top 10 list” because I consider the album to essentially be 1 song.
id swap metropolis for in the presence of enemies and were not far off. but instead of space dye best put maybe sacrificed sons
there is no way to justify the pure genius of dream theater. they have helped me through dark times in my life and the only good thing i took from my relationship with my biological father. these guys are amazing people. i would love to meet them someday and meet others who share my love for dt.
Feel the same way :)
I met them back in '98. Pretty cool guys. Even though their line up has changed since then.
😭😭😭😭😭
This is propably the best WM list I have seen. Its not easy to choose only 10 Dream Theater songs but here's my opinion.
10. Glass prison
9. Panic attack
8. Home
7. Dance of eternity
6. Pull me under
5. In the name of god
4. Count of Tuscany
3. Change of seasons
2. Metropolis part 1
Honorable mentions: Take the time, Spirit carries on, Space dye vest, Six degrees of inner turbulence, Breaking all illusions, Illumination theory
1. Octavarium
Samaa mielt
Yeah I was expecting Pull me Under to be at the top so I applaud them for not having the most stereotypical list possible
Wow! I never thought Watchmojo would make a video of Top DT songs! This is quite an interesting surprise! Let's see the list :D
MaximumPayne12 In fact, no songs from ADToE? Such underrated album. Breaking all Illusions, Lost not forgotten or Bridges in the sky definitely deserved a spot on the list
MaximumPayne12 true
A Dramatic Turn Of Events is a fantastic record. There is not a bad song on there. Unfortunately the Self Titled, half of it fell away. :(
They seem to like dream theater they have iterviewed John Petrucci on portnoy's exit
My top 10 Dream theater songs as a personal list:
10. Endless Sacrifice
9. The Answer Lies Within

3. In the name of God
2. Octavarium
1. The Count of Tuscany
+zimbo1221 Finally someone who agrees with me on count of tuscany.
10. The looking Glass
9.Constant motion
8.Stream of Consciences
7.The Shattered Fortress
6.Lost not Forgotten
5.Fatal Tragedy
4.The Mirror
3.The Dance of Eternity
2.Breaking all illusions
1.The count of tuscany

05. The Ministry of Lost Souls
04. Metropolis Pt. 1 - Miracle and the Sleeper.
03.Trial of Tears
02. Finally Free
01. The Count of Tuscany
Even now, as this list is complete, I see a lot of songs that I like, but couldn't fit in (As I am and Sacrificed Sons) to name a few, but that is what is so awesome about DT, even though you have a top 20 there are so many others that you love all equally. That's why they're one of the greatest bands of all time imo.
Am i the only one happy that Pull Me Under is not No.1?
Jakub YES. (also, nice profile pic)
They do say it's based on overall popularity and also popularity among hardcore fans. So putting it halfway is probably right where it should be.
My Top 5:
5. Pull Me Under
4. Ilumination Theory
3. Panic Atack
2. Octavarium
1. The Dance Of Eternity
MistahLightningBolt (Triggered Sound Effect) I love that song though
MistahLightningBolt it's a good single, especially when you wanna show people who don't like metal a cool band like Dream Theater. While Octavarium is not my favorite, Pull me Under is on a good spot
Any chance of a top ten Opeth tracks?
huh... :D
that would be awesome, or top ten Death songs.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
*No*
the baying of the hounds and beneath the mire.stop!
A surprisingly decently put together list. A Change of Seasons, Metropolis, and Octavarium being represented makes me extremely happy. However, not Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence? C'mon, that 41 minute epic is fantastic!
Glass Prison was on there?
I know, right?! At least The Overture would of been nice.
Mmm yeah,
I don't think they put Six Degrees on there either because they may not have realised it's intended to be one huge track or possibly because most of the songs function as individual pieces out when taken out of the whole 41 minute masterpiece
Six degrees of inner turbulance is a fantastic album, but it's so hard to separate each song. And Scenes from a memory is a tough one too.
Could this be the end?
Is this the way I die?
Sitting here alone
No one by my side
I don't understand
I don't feel that I deserve this
What did I do wrong?
I just don't understand
Give me one more chance
Let me please explain
It's all been circumstance
I tell you once again
You took me for a ride
Promising a vast adventure
Next thing that I know
I'm frightened for my life
Now wait a minute man
That's not how it is
You must be confused
That isn't who I am
Please don't be afraid
I would never try to hurt you
This is how we live
Strange although it seems
Please try to forgive
The chapel and the saint
The soldiers and the wine
The fables and the tales
All handed down through time
Of course you're free to go
Go and tell the world my story
Tell about my brother
Tell them about me
The Count of Tuscany
PURE MUSICAL BLISS.
TheMetalGaia One Masterpiece of a song. I recently bought all of their albums and I mut admit I have a new favourite band. Their music is so emotional and forcefully
Tho Mas Exactly, friend.
My all time favourite DT song :)
TheMetalGaia Nope
Is it just me or does part of that melody sound like a throw back to Octavarium? I also I have a feeling that this is a known fact and I just made myself look dumb. :)
I wanna get into dream theater. Which album should I start with?
Edit: This comment is super old! I've already listened to every DT album!
TheNerdyGinger Metropolis pt II: Scenes From a Memory
TheNerdyGinger Octavarium for sure. Got me hooked so easy.
TheNerdyGinger Octavarium got me into the best band in the world, but I think Awake or Scenes from a Memory should be the starter.
Good point. Self-titled is pretty good. Train of Thought is perfect if you were into metal before listening to DT
Smittywerbenjager Manjensen I like heavy :D
This band is so good that a top 10 list is not long enough lol
I just started bingeing this band. I'm going from album to album. Just finished the 3rd album. Love them so far.
Dream Theater is one of my all time favorite bands and I have to say that this list is pretty great but there is one major flaw.
WHERE IS SIX DEGREES?
Dominik Stir Yes! I love that song
The Great Debate is one of my favorite DT songs. Love the Portnoy video showing only him playing along with the music. His mastery of dynamics and feel, along with his showmanship is top -notch and a joy to watch.
The Glass Prison is on this list
They didn't include A Nightmare to Remember :(
Misunderstood is so good
One of my favorites is Surrounded. It got me through some hard times and I think it’s just beautiful all together. Another Day, Untethered Angel, Through Her Eyes, Our New World, Fatal Tragedy, the list goes on and on. So glad I found this band. They’ve truly changed my life.
Stream of Consciousness not even Honorable mention?
I know right! I think Stream of Consciousness should replace Dance for Eternity in this list.
Misunderstood and Take The Time and Caught in a web too
That's DT's problem. They have too many good songs.
Dream Theater could have a legit Top 100 songs if they wanted at this point after all their studio albums.
@@louismartin4106 Excellent choices!!!
1. Octavarium
2. The count of tuscany
3. In the presence of enemies
4. Illumination theory
5. The dance of eternity
6. The enemy inside
7. Metropolis part 1
8. The best of times
9. Finally free
10. Vacant - stream of consciousness
"A nightmare to remember" should be on the list, that track is amazing
The Ministry of Lost Souls.
Lol. This list had some odd choices. More than half the songs they chose I would not have put on my list.
Agreed. Absolute masterpiece
1. Octavarium
2. The Count of Tuscany
3. Illumination Theory
4. A Change of Seasons
5. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
6. Metropolis Pt. 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper
7. Panic Attack
8. The Glass Prison
9. Home
10. Breaking All Illusions
But that's my opinion (:
I like your top 10. I remember not so long ago when I heard Octavarium about 1000 times in a year (as iTunes counter read). It used to make me frustrated that I could not share this band with no one, (the same story that we all read here from people who dislike DT). But now I don't really care and keep their music as a privilege to myself. For example, all New Year's Eve I hear Stream Of Consciousness so its ending matches the fireworks in the sky, like they did un Budokan.
1. Octavarium
2. The Count of Tuscany
3. Panic Attack
4. The Test That Stumped Them All
5. A Change of Seasons
6. The Dark Eternal Night
7. A Nightmare to Remember
8. Shattered Fortress
9. Solitary Shell
10.The Spirit Carries on
11. I Walk Beside you
(Couldn't do just 10! I tried! I count all of Six Degrees as separate tracks, considering they are all about very different things. That's just me, though.)
honorable mentions for this list:
in the presence of enemies
in the name of god
these walls
the great debate
hell's kitchen
finally free
the best of times
space-dye vest
scene two: overture 1928 & strange deja vu
the bigger picture
It's hard to make a list for them because their songs have so many parts that I feel bad about putting parts of one song over other parts.
Everyone always seems to forget The Count of Tuscany and I have no idea why. It tells an interesting story and has wonderful musicianship. I know in this list they include it, but in other lists people never put it in the top 10 and I can't understand why.
It's actually Petrucci who plays that part with his guitar at 4:48
+pomppivaponi yes he is
*Facts*
I knew that was a guitar the first time I heard that. Watchmojo lady is an idiot
@@michaelflorczyk1394 i agree😂
@@michaelflorczyk1394 Someone not knowing something doesn't mean they're an idiot. I'm even sure most guitarists won't recognize that this is a guitar
At 4:48, she says that the solo is done by Jordan Rudess. It is actually John Petrucci's solo.
That one of the things I love about Petrucci. The set up he has and the riffs he is able to play sometimes you can't tell if it's the keyboard or the guitar.
That annoyed me more than it should have lol
Yes! Her comment had me confused. Always thought is was guitar. That section is absolute bliss.
God, you FINALLY made this. Every time i see a new top 10 songs video come out i always find myself screaming MAKE A DREAM THEATER ONE!!!! at my computer.
This band is the best!
Count of Tuscany is forever going to be one of the most important songs of my childhood. Masterpiece ❤️

He suits them perfectly... it's why he's still their lead singer and people like Charlie Dominici or Chris Collins are not.
just a spontaneous fact, the guitar John Petrucci uses, is a Ernie ball music man and goes for around five grand not counting pickups
10. The Great Debate
9. Home
8. Afterlife
7. Breaking all Illusions
6. Under a Glass Moon
5. Honor Thy Father
4. A Change of Seasons
3. ...In the Presence of Enemies...
2. Space Dye Vest
1. Metropolis I: The Miracle and The Sleeper
Space dye vest has quickly become one of my favorite DT tracks.
Never thought I'd see the day dream theater got recognized (again) on a more commercial scale. I'm a huge DT fan and I feel Mojo definitely brought some justice to this list. Thank you Mojo keep surprising me with your always intriguing top 10's.
Best Watch Mojo video ever. No complaints. You could pretty much pick any 10 DT songs and have a great list.
People should try listening to the whole 12 Step suite. With the years between the first and last song it is brilliant how the recurring motifs work even with some of them having a motif which links it to the album it is on. It's a really strong set.
I'd rather listen to Five Finger Death Punch than Dream Theater.
-said no one ever.
Kenneth Woodard unfortunately I think a lot of people would say that. too many people, especially in the US, listen to utter crap
K W I would honestly.
I love listening to Rush but I hate listening to this band( no matter what they do or how good it is)-learning to live, pull me under, voices and silent man is all that I believe I like from their catalog.
To be honest I just listen to more 5FDP than DT
Come on man
My Top 10 list or so...:
10 Under A Glass Moon (I&W)
9 The Glass Prison (6DoIT)
8 The Spirit Carries On (SFAM)
7 One Last Time (SFAM)
6 Illumination Theory (DT)

4 Breaking All Illusions (ADToE)
3 A Change of Seasons (ACoS)
2 Octavarium (8varium)
1 Learning to Live (I&W)
Im actually surprised Learning to Live is not mentioned. Not even in the comments...
pirre095 learning to live is that one song everybody loves but few have as their favourites, sadly. It's amazing
Same dude, LTL is my favourite song. Although IMO A Change of Seasons is still the greatest song ever
Under a Glass Moon = awesomesauce!!
Barstool warrior bro
Man you forgot, BEST OF TIMES, it's the best song and even more chillls
Take the Time is a great one. Wish it'd make the list

1. In the Presence of Enemies

Tool is Awesome !!!!! One of the best bands ever
Take the Time, Stream of Consciousness, In the Presence of Enemies PT. 1, Constant Motion. Just to mention a few ..
Take the Time is definitely one of my favorites lyrically
I must admit, I'm a little sad that they didn't include "Honor Thy Father" in this top ten list because it is really a beautiful track full of insecurities and the drummer is singing throughout the song, regardless of the crazy time signatures and beats.
***** yes, all the time =D Portnoy is amazing... don't know if Mangini does the same, though...
Greatest band in the world. Not the top 10 list I'd have put together, but considering I don't know any two Dream Theater fans who'd have the same top 10 on their lists, it's no surprise. And these are still all fantastic songs, so great list! More people really need to listen to this band.

Next to Tool perhaps

Dream theater is so damn underated I don't anyone else but my brother that knows this band
I think Voices and Learning to Live belonged on there somewhere.
So are you into them yet?
I'd say Learning To Live either low on the list or an honourable mention tbh
I do know that on Learning To Live on the one part where you hear James really soar vocal wise. Right before that really emotional guitar solo. It is great for me to warm up with before I sing. It is an absolute adrenaline rush to belt that part out.
especially learning to live
Number 1 and 2
Not a huge dream theater fan but I thought space dye vest was a really emotional and soulful song. Not one of there huge hits but it's what first made me aware of them.
Each of these albums is inextricably tied with specific times and events in my life. Listening to them is like taking a journey back through my memories.
Woaaaah, that's something i wasn't expecting in any way
Thanks watchmojo :)
my number one song from them for me is in the name of god. song is too badass and the first song I heard from them.
That album (Train of Thought) with that song is, to me, the best of DT :)
my favorite DT song ever... second favorite after that is Home
Yup, I agree. The guitar and keyboard duo solo is stunning.
Train of thought is now my favourite album by DT but it took me ages to really get into it
in the name of God, totally, and, where's "The best of times"?
Songs like on the backs of angels, Outcry, Misunderstood, The Hollow Years, Home, Space Dye Vest, This is the Life, Repentance, The Enemy Inside and the Illumination Theory also deserve recognition !

U r the most right of anyone on Ive ever seen on TH-cam >
Octavarium is far from my favourite song by Dream Theater (personally my favourite is As I Am)
But Octavarium is EASILY their BEST song.... Such amazing musicianship.

I personally can see why tons of people our talking about their tastes of certain Dream Theater styles. There have been many styles that Dream Theater has evolved through over like the past 20 years. Personally, I like the list, I like long songs. It's a good list, I love and own every Dream Theater album.
Imo
1. Change of seasons
2. Count of Tuscany
3. Metropolis pt 1
4. Octavarium
5. Panic attack
Dream Theater, one of the most diverse and awesome bands ever
No other band comes close to the benchmark of music these guys have set for me. I couldn't have asked for a better singer for this band, including every other member. Amazing!
The Count of Tuscany, an absolute masterpiece. Can't stop listening to it.
Whoot Whoot Mike Portnoy!!!
I could talk all day about Dream Theater, especially all the songs that they missed but I guess it's a little hard to fit 30 songs in a top ten list :/
However The Count of Tuscany should be higher, and a couple songs should be on there: Home, Stream of Consciousness, Honor Thy Father, and Six Degrees of Inner Turbuelence (40 minutes of epicness).
Dream Theater is definitely one-of-a-kind and reshaped progressive rock, and truly will go down in history as the most technically proficient band of all time, with their examplary song-writing and musicianship and variety of style.
Long live Dream Theater!
I hate yet to see them in concert though :(

Le epic Haken pfp
And where the BEST OF TIMES😶😶😶
I thought for sure 6 Degrees would be #1. It's 42 minutes of some of the best they've ever done. Maybe they're not counting it as one song, even though it definitely is on the actual album (of the same name). They rarely play the whole thing live, but they did on the Score DVD, and it was awesome.
