      Imagine a band called 'NO'. And they are the warm up band for YES.
      The announcer says, "Everybody give it up for NO! And the crowed replies Yessss!
      The announcer gets frustrated and says NO! . But the crowd replies Yesssss!
      Eventually the band, NO, doesn't get to come on stage.
      Sadly enough, the band 'NO' never makes it into the big times.

      Opeth tries to copy all the seventies band and yet people think they are giants. Opeth should keep doing one thing at a time, trying to play prog and death at the same time doesn't work for them anymore with their mild approach. If they stick to prog rock which most people do not know what it is then the band will certainly release something close to Selling England by the Pound or Starless.

I hope it's the first option, because it's somehow easier to handle.

    • @DX7036

    • @manolmomchilov1192
      @manolmomchilov1192 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      DX7036 Cream are an early example of really professional jazz/blues/pop musicians coming together and making something new, heavy, original and unique. I'm not even discussing their musicianship. Ginger Baker - one of the first drummers to have a second bass drum. Cream were taking music loudness to a completely different level: it's one thing when you play a musically complex composition with a standard (of the time) rock equipment, it's a completely different experience when you attack the audience with a million Watts of sound, produced by (the newly emerged) Marshalls. And Jack Bruce's compositions were really complex, multilayered, filled with irregular rhytms.... Cream may be perceived as "just that 60s hippie band", but they are more prog than some of the bands on this list.

      Genesis, Yes, Jethro Tull, ELP, and Pink Floyd are English. Rush are Canadian. So obviously Obi Wan needs to put down the light saber and study up a bit before posting.
      Sadly, the US really didn't have any major entries in the original flowering of Prog. We had psychedelia of course, which has various similarities, but it's not the same. Some things that, say, The Doors did were very close to progressive rock. Zappa, who was mentioned here, I don't consider progressive rock either. He was sort of his own complete universe really. For a brief period there Styx was almost a serious prog rock band, though closer to pop-prog.
      Ultimately, most of the later US bands that some would call prog are not in my opinion, they are more metal than prog. Tool I'll give a pass, though they are extremely heavy most of the time as well.

    They rank Rush at #2 and don't even play any of their actual progressive rock songs (ex.: Xanadu, 2112, Cygnus X-1)... Good job, WatchMojo.
    I'm sorry, I like Pink Floyd (they're one of the greatest prog rock bands), but Rush trump them by a long shot because Rush culminated the best elements of progressive bands into one awesome sound; not to mention Roger Waters is a shit bassist. He's only good for holding the pocket down. Geddy Lee, however, is a melodic bassist who doesn't overplay his part. He does that while singing, switching off on keyboards, and playing bass pedals at the same time. David Gilmour and Alex Lifeson are on an equal playing field of guitar greatness. And Neil Peart is Neil Peart. There's just no questioning his stance and impact on the art of drumming. Nick Mason can hold his own on the drums as a progressive rock drummer, but Neil just overshadows most any drummer. Period.
    Yes should've been higher because Yes revolutionized so much more than just progressive rock. They revolutionized the art of playing instruments and even live shows (you can thank them for coming up with the concept of in-the-round concerts with the revolving stage).
    I also appreciate WM giving a nod to Jethro Tull, but even they should've been higher than #10. Listen to Thick As A Brick and A Passion Play and tell me they were not musical geniuses. This list has the right bands, but in the wrong order.

      Try spelling ignorant correctly first before you criticize others for their taste in music, you illiterate dipshit. Rush is touted as the most influential rock band behind The Beatles and Cream. Pink Floyd influenced Rush, but Rush went further than Roger Waters' egotistical ass ever could. Why do you think the other members gave up on Pink Floyd? Because Roger Waters was an asshole, a shit composer, and an even shittier bassist. Geddy can play circles around him on Rush's easiest songs.

    • @filipe8673
      @filipe8673 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      RushFanatic87 Roger waters a shitty bassist? I know that Geddy Lee is better hands down. But calling Roger Waters a shitty bassist is being an idiot, for fuck sake he wrote The Dark side of The moon ALL.
      He got heavy basslines, he is a multi-instrumental guy. he was perfect for Pink Floyd and.... He is The best Pink Floyd member.
      Of course Roger was an asshole, so Paul McCartney, but it doesnt make him a bad bassist.

      RushFanatic87 and Rush is not influencial.

    • @RushFanatic87
      @RushFanatic87 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul McCartney could play circles around Roger Waters as well. Roger Waters is only good for rhythm and staying in the pocket. I picked out "Money" on bass when I was nine for Christ's sake. Roger Waters is not as good as people think he is. And no, he didn't write ALL of Dark Side. That was a group effort to create that album. David Gilmour was by far the best member of Pink Floyd because he's actually a multi-instrumentalist. He played lead/rhythm/slide guitar, bass, harmonica, keyboards, synthesizers, mandolin, drums, and a plethora of other things. Ooh, Roger can bang on a gong and cymbals for "A Saucerful of Secrets." Whoop-de-frickity-doo! Nick Mason does more on percussion with odd time signatures than Roger could ever hope to do. Roger can't write a guitar solo to save his life. Rick Wright gave Pink Floyd that psychedelic vibe with his keyboards. Did Roger do that? I think not.
      Also, ask any of your favorite bands about their influences and they would happen to disagree with you. Rush has been cited by a majority of modern rock acts, as well as classic rock acts, as a huge influence. You're just denying it because you're a douche who can't stand that they exist and have probably done more to contribute to the history of hard and progressive rock than your favorite band could ever hope to (and they continue to make meaningful music to this day).

Yes and Genesis are amazing, there are other Prog bands that are criminally underrated, bands like Brighteye Brison, and Unitopia are pretty awesome.

      +Paul Blart The same thing with Rush IMO. They are a great band and I like them, but they weren't as inportant as other bands for prog rock. Personaly I would say the 4 bigest bands for prog rock were King Crimson, Yes, Genesis and Pink Floyd. I don't really like Pink Floyd, and I see the others more influencial but you know...

      And before someone says so, I'm not hating on Floyd. I just prefer higher energy in my music which makes me put Rush slightly above Floyd. That and being canadian, Rush popped up on the radio here more than Floyd so my opinion is heavily biased.

      As a rush fan: They simply aren't as good as Pink Floyd. While they're work often requires technical precision technical precision does not arbitrarily make it the best music. Their later years are not as consistently good, and the songs that separate them from pop rock are the more low energy pieces that use the bombast beyond the recognizable band aesthetic.

    It’s been a PERSONAL journey. Grew up with 'CLASSIC': Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Yes, Genesis, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Frank Zappa, Gentle Giant, Crack The Sky, Soft Machine, Van Der Graaf Generator, Renaissance, Jethro Tull, Premiata Forneria Marconi, Can, Hawkwind, Camel, Triumvirat, and (if you want to consider them prog) Nektar.
    But if I wanted something ‘POPPIER’: ELO, Kansas, The Moody Blues, Focus, Supertramp, The Alan Parsons Project, Mike Oldfield, and (if you want to consider them prog) 10cc.
    Soon thereafter I discovered ‘NEWER’ stuff: Rush, The Mars Volta, Porcupine Tree, Spock's Beard, and (if you want to consider them prog) Trans-Siberian Orchestra / Savatage.
    And in more recent years I have developed a liking for something ‘HEAVIER’: Marillion, Coheed & Cambria, Tool, Queensrÿche, Mastodon, Opeth, Dream Theater. So...I guess that would be my Top 40 List. (In no particular order obviously.)

      The thing with prog is that in order to really grasp prog, you have to understand music. And this really bothers a lot of people -- and triggers a kind of totally obnoxious *reverse snobbery* -- because they're convinced that music is purely "emotional" and can't be understood with the brain.
      Which is, of course, an idiotic false dichotomy ;)
